Been working on this for 2 months! Been sick the last 7 to 10 days. Thanks to all that took the time to make patterns for the words, very much appreciated. Used Maple and Walnut. The buttons are for looks only, mounted from the inside of the shop. Didn't realize how bad the shop door needs painted. I also try to save the pattern when I remove them from the piece,, I was able to use it to spray paint the inside of the door.10 points

I'm done, I quit, no more puzzle cutting...
TripleJScroller and 5 others reacted to Iguanadon for a topic
... for 2 weeks... Taking a 2 week break after cutting the 21 currently on my drying rack. I have 125 unique puzzles for display and 575 duplicates ready for a total of 700 puzzles to start the season off in two weeks. I have 3 big events back to back and I feel good about my stockpile. Goal is to not have to cut much in between events. If the weather cooperates this year my goal is to sell 1,400. Last year was crazy with double our normal annual rainfall and hurricane Florence hitting us head on. Time to relax before hitting approximately 30 events thru the end of the year. Iggy6 points -
Making Blast Gates
tomsteve and 4 others reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
There is a current topic on blast gates and the problems with them accumulating dust in them and jamming. I initially had this same problem and also the gates never sealed well. I tried clipping the corners of the gates to get them to clear the dust and that worked a little. However, the gates were just not strong enough and some of them whistled because they leaked. Eventually, I made my own gates. I have a large dust collection system and needed both 6" and 4" gates and several of each. My cust collection is plumbed with 4" and 6" PVC and DWV plastic pipe. The gates are made of baltic birch with a slide thru part that is 1/4" baltic birch. All of the parts are finished with orange shellac and then waxed to provide smooth action and no leakage. I made a couple of varieties as I have different size flexible hose coming off the main dust collection branch. Because I was making a number of them, I set up a jig with my router to be able to make the various parts easily. I have the jigs to make the 4" and 6" gates and want to make some for 2-1/2" gates. This is a look at the ceiling in my shop with one of the gates and you can see the ceiling hangers that I made of the pipe.5 points -

I love woodworking as a hobby and have been ask several times to start selling my stuff. I live comfortably on my social security and pension so I don't need the headache. Why ruin a good thing I enjoy going to the shop everyday and spending time making something or just messing around. I have no pressure to crank things out except to get the kitchen cabinets done. My wife thinks four years is too long. I tell her 3 1/2 years planning three months making them. I have 3 doors and 9 drawers to go.4 points -
Excellent source for scroll saw wood!
RabidAlien and 2 others reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
I know I posted about this company last year but every so often there is a new batch of scrollers who need a good source to buy wood from. If you are like me and live on the West side of the U.S. there are not many places to buy from. It seems like everything is East of the Mississippi River. I just received my latest order from Cherokee Wood Products in Upland, Ca. They even have a "scroll saw wood" listing on their webpage. A very nice young man by the name of Chris is in charge of their online ordering. He had a question on my order and took the time to call me. I placed the order last Friday and just received it today. Can't beat that for getting it out and shipped. I checked my email today and found that they had sent me an email and for no reason at all, they credited my credit card for $19.95. Just because they felt like it. So, I hope you will give them a try. Here is their info. https://www.cherokeewood.com. Once you get there, go to "woodworking supplies" and the scroll saw wood is there. Click on it and start shopping.3 points -

Got myself a Dewalt 735 planer so I decided to make a BBQ serving tray ( yo don’t call it a cutting board), I think for my first one, it turned out pretty good, 3 coats of mineral oil and 3 coats of bees wax. The napking holder rabbits keep on multiplying, made some others for gifts. Anyway not golfing weather here so lot’s of time in the shop.2 points -

Interesting topic, but it just serves to remind me why I don't make stuff to sell. I frankly couldn't care less how long something takes me to cut. When I show people stuff I've made, they always ask; "How long did that take?". I just shrug my shoulders and say, "No idea".2 points -

Enjoy and hope you make lots of saw dust with it.2 points -
Yes, congrats. I still remember when I went from my old Craftsman to a new DeWalt. It was pretty amazing. Then the step up to an Excalibur was not quite as a drastic change but still a nice difference. Funny part, when I got a Hegner, I thought oh my what have I done. It wasn't an easy transition, and I really thought I had made a serious mistake.... To me a couple months to get use to but now it is my favorite saw and if I could only have one saw, the Hegner would be my choice. The only thing better than having one saw you love is to have two saws!! If I could sell my Seyco, I would probably get a new Pegas, because they are sooo pretty!2 points

When I moved my Dust Deputy from my shop vac to a re-purposed whole house central vac unit that I had acquired from the neighbors when they remodeled their house, It collapsed the first bucket that I was using almost instantly when a planer shaving partially blocked the end of the hose (I was vacuuming the floor). I had used this same bucket with the Dust Deputy and my shop vac and the shop vac had never done this. The suction level of the central vac was obviously much higher than the shop vac. I studied the situation and realized that the 5 gallon plastic bucket that I was using had ribs around the upper third of the bucket, but no ribs around the lower 2/3. So I stacked 3 buckets together and the top one became the collection bucket. This gave me ribs the full length of the collection bucket and tripled the bucket wall thickness. This solved my collapsing bucket problem and I used the system this way until my son brought me a 20 gallon metal grease barrel. The barrel was already clean inside because the grease comes in a plastic bag inside the barrel. I switched to this metal barrel so I don't have to dump it as often, and my system has been working fine for me ever since. I installed the central vac pipes in the walls of my shop and have inlets located in two places in the shop, one in the shop attic, and one through the outside wall next to the passage door. The 25' hose lets me reach anywhere in my shop and I can take it outside to vacuum my cars and trucks. The strong plastic buckets that I was using came from Firehouse Subs. The chain sells their used pickle buckets for $2 each and the money is donated to the local fire company, so a win-win both ways. These buckets work great, with one exception. Recirculating the air through the dust collector and back into the shop will make the shop smell like a huge dill pickle. Nothing seems to remove this smell from these buckets quickly, although leaving them outside in the Sun with the lids off for about a week seemed to work the best. They are very good, strong, and cheap buckets though. I now have a second Dust Deputy and use it with my shop vac. It doesn't get used often because most of the time I'm using the central vacuum, but there are times when my son or I need a portable vacuum, so the shop vac / Dust Deputy and Firehouse bucket system gets used. It is great not having to clean the shop vac filter or keep replacing the bags. There is never more than a light trace of super fine dust on the collection container of the vac units. The Dust Deputy does a great job of separating out everything else. The central vacuum is vented to the outdoors, so even this micro fine stuff (the dangerous dust) never makes it back into my shop. When possible, we add a hose to the exhaust of the shop vac system and vent it to the outdoors too. Charley2 points

I am Pop-Pop located in Charlotte, NC. I have a nice workshop in my yard and I produce small run profile parts for local contractors, homeowners and artisans n the area. I have a 16" Dremel VSS1680 Scro Saw, 10" Table Saw. 12" Radial Arm Saw, 12" Surface Planer, 6" Joiner, Small Engine lathe, 6" Wood lathe with bed extension, Beall Buffing System and a Tormek sharpening system as well as assorted hand tools. My most recent project was making 13 window mullions to matched profile for a repeat client.1 point -

The only thing I dislike about my Hawk is the table surface. It is cast aluminum and finished by running it through a large drum sander. Nothing wrong with the finish except I use a paste wax on it but does not seem to make much difference. I happened to find a rattle can of Amway Wonder Mist. It is just a silicone spray. The can has followed us for 55 years. Can is a bit rusty but still sprays. A very light spray made all the difference. Just wondering if anyone else uses a similar product.1 point

Think it was Randy ( Hotshot ) that sanded his down to a real fine sandpaper and then buffed it out like you would a car with buffing compound.. looked like a mirror finish... I've done the same thing but without doing the sanding.. I don't want a mirror.. Might see my reflection and mess me up, LOL.. Ideally the sanding marks gives less surface drag so it should be easier spinning than a complete flat surface.. Anyway any new to me saw I use a my buffing wheel and compound on the table to clean them up good.. then I use Johnson paste wax periodically after that.. My dewalt one time had got something on it.. believe it was some sap from cutting something that wasn't completely dried out but don't now that to be a fact.. anyway I ended up having to run the buffer on it again because the paste wax just wasn't getting it good.. it'd help but quickly need waxed again.. like about every other day.. after buffing and the paste wax.. it was fine again..1 point

It is never advised to use silicone on any woodworking tool surface as the silicone can interfere with some finishes.1 point

I don't mind the smell of dill pickles! and I love their sub-sandwiches! If you do some house painting, the Behr 5 gallon buckets are very heavy built also. I did not realize there is such a difference in 5 gallon buckets. I contacted Dustopper.com and enquired about where they recommended getting extra 90° elbows. Got a response that they sell them for $8 including shipping. Most places I look, like Dust Deputy, they wanted $5 for the elbow, +$9+ for shipping. Kind of cumbersome the way you have to order them right now because the do not have a store yet, well here is their response: "Hi Paul: The process is a bit clunky, but it works. Please send me your address and phone number, then I can send you an invoice for an elbow from my PayPal account. After you pay that with a credit card, I can ship that day or the next. The price is $8.00, which includes shipping. There will soon be a utility that allows for purchases from our website, but the current site design is not as secure as we want, and looks too amateurish. We are in negotiations with a top-notch company to manage our online business. Send me your address and phone number (in case there’s a problem), and I’ll get you what you need. Tom Huntley, President" I responded this A.M. and already have the Paypal invoice. We will see how it goes.1 point

Interesting. I have always thought different saws, different blades. One blade is not as good/bad on all saws. It all depends on how aggressive the saw cuts. I know it is definitely that way between my Seyco and Hegner.1 point

OCtoolguy reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
So in the end what is the bottom line??? From this point forward will you be using one saw as the primary saw??? I do not see an advantage changing from styles of saws because each one cuts differently as you have proven. I know you did this as a test for fun. I have a Dewalt, Hegner and a 220vs and 226vs RBI saws. My every day saw is the 220. The Hegner is my bevel cutting saw, the 226 is my large project saw and the Dewalt sits and collects dust, not makes it. Have to say that is a way to spice things up cutting the same project that many times.1 point -

I'm glad you posted this topic.. I had been looking at the china made dust separator, but I like the more compact design etc of the one you show here.. plus it's cheaper than the actual dust deputy.. These are a great deal and work well too ( brother in aw has one on a sandblasting cabinet..) but I like the more compact of the one you have.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dust-Collector-Dust-Seperater-Household-Cyclone-SN50T-Industrial-High-Efficiency/283443009681?hash=item41fe851891:g:WwAAAOSwaKVcqKv61 point

I'll jump in. This project is a grasshopper pull toy I made several years ago. It was a big hit with the kids that got it. Primarily, it was a bandsaw - drill press project. The wheels cut with a hole saw. The axles, 1/4" dowel stock. The joints for the legs, eyes and ends of the antennas were all from a craft store. The antennas themselves were electrical wire left at the garage when we purchased the house 32 years ago. The concept was from a woodworker on another site. I'm sure there will be some great items from the intarsia, segmentation folks.1 point
