I just thought I'd bring attention to Dave Monk being mentioned on Steve Good's website today. I get his email every day and today he highlighted Dave's recent work of art done from a Steve Good pattern. Hat's off to you Dave. Great job on that box. For those of you who might have missed it, here is the link. http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2019/04/dragon-and-sword-box-scroll-saw-pattern.html4 points

Scrolling With Magnification
WayneMahler and 3 others reacted to Rolf for a topic
Long ago I used a head band magnifier, it killed my neck. I went to a ring lamp magnifier. Originally a salvaged fluorescent tube one but I did not like the light and was always worried that he arm on my Hawk would break the tube when a blade broke. I now have an Led magnifier, not absolutely sure which Diopter. I can wear my glasses and sit comfortably, no more crick in my neck. This may answere some questions Diopter Chart for picking a ring lamp magnifier. Random Tidbit - Packing for Events
new2woodwrk and 2 others reacted to Iguanadon for a topic
Just a random tidbit that may help someone... Keep your eyes and braincells open to new possible ways to transport items to events. For 3 years I've simply packed my duplicate puzzles in bin(s). Depending on the size of event, one bin up to three bins. The bins of course are great for hauling but then at the events I had to unpack them and organize them in a way to be able to find what I need quickly as I'm selling. Just a nuisance having to unpack, then re-pack at the end of the day. Now comes the random tidbit... One of the great things about ordering stuff from Amazon constantly is a wide variety of sized boxes. LOL I recently ordered a couple of items that came in these long boxes and as I was packing for my event yesterday I realized they are perfectly sized and shaped for my puzzles. I'm now able to pack the duplicates in the box(es) in order alphabetically and can find what I want very quickly without having to unpack and lay them out. This is going to be great (yes I'm easily pleased LOL). I reinforced the under side of the boxes with duct tape. I hope they will survive at least this year. 2 photos of new and 1 photo of old transport in bins and boxes. Iggy3 points -

Inlaid Trinket Box
amazingkevin and 2 others reacted to Dave Monk for a topic
I modified one of Steve Goods patterns to make this. I am participating in the Denton Texas Art and Jazz Festival the end of the month. Getting kinda nervous about it. It is a two and a half day event with attendance around 200,000 people. Sure hope the weather is good because I have been working the past three months in preparation for it. First time for something this big for me. Having a tough time knowing what to price this piece. I'm not really anxious to sell it. I doubt if many people will appreciate the time that went into it. Made of walnut, maple and cedar.3 points -
Had my first event, was supposed to be 2 days (Friday and Saturday) but a threat of storms and wind Friday caused me to err on the side of caution and I didn't attend day 1. I arrived bright and early this morning for day 2 and set up. Beautiful weather, huge crowd but mostly just lookers. Had a good day selling 56 puzzles in just 6 hours. I had a goal of 100 for the 2 days, so I'm happy with 56 for 1 day. My biggest 1 day event is next Saturday. Sold 95 each of the last 2 years so of course that's the goal for this year. EDIT - The last 2 years at my best 1 day event I was still selling the raw kids puzzles at half the price of my signature puzzles. Now that I don't sell them, I need to sell 80 signature puzzles this year to hit the same amount of $$$ as the past 2 years at the upcoming event. And the fun begins! Iggy3 points

New King 21" Saw
Dave Monk and one other reacted to TripleJScroller for a topic
I had thought about the Pegas myself, however I'm not at all a patient person and the thought of waiting a month or more to receive my saw just wasn't going to work for me...lol. Not to mention I really didn't like the idea of spending that much money on something that I'd never been able to inspect in person. I figure down the road I can always put the Pegas clamps on my saw, however right now I'm perfectly happy with the clamps on the saw so it's not something I'm worried about anytime soon, though I might buy a set for my Delta as the knob on that saw is pretty worn and in need of replacing.2 points -
Well everyone, I'm not as smart as I would like people to think. I have been under the impression that X and diopter were the same thing. Googling magnifiers I discover 5 diopter is actually 2.5X or 2.5 times magnification. 3 diopter is 1.5X. I ordered a 1.25 X magnifier so I'll see how it is when I get it this week. For about $25 it may be a piece of crap. I also forgot about focal distance. It's all a learning experience.2 points

I have an LED magnifying light with a 5 diopter lens. I only use the light for illumination. I scroll using a magnifying glasses. I scroll with my nose rally close to the table and hunched over uncomfortably. I was hoping the magnifier lamp would work for me but it is too powerful. The magnifier needs to almost touch the table to be in focus. I found an LED magnifier with a 1.25 diopter lens for $25 on ebay. That's really cheap so I won't know how good it is until I get it this coming week. Hopefully it will permit me to sit upright and still view the blade and pattern well. There really is no question here except I'm wondering if other scrollers use a low diopter LED lamp. I have found them hard to find. The photo shows how close 5 diopters need to be to the table to be in focus.1 point

I saw it this morning! Just think, we new him when he was just a rookie, congratulations Dave!1 point

Well... after this post I think I'm finally understanding what your trying to work with.. and I do see it maybe working.. I do believe you'll need a dimple in the material to be drilled though otherwise you're not going to be able to keep that retractable center piece on center..1 point

I agree with Dave.. The Pegas with those clamps make the saw much more user friendly in my opinion.. If I were to buy another new saw.. Pegas is where my money would go..1 point

Norm, You might want to look at a Pegas. I got one and love it. Love the blade clamps.1 point

New King 21" Saw
OCtoolguy reacted to Norm Fengstad for a topic
I have been looking at the 21 inch Excelsor which is made by King and sold here in Canada for $1000.00 ( about $750 U.S). looks like it is the same saw. Glad to hear the positive comments1 point -
Absolutely beautiful work. Ten hours? start to finish? Holy Moly I have a lot of room for improvement. Add me to the video request too1 point

Find a local distributor for Coroplast. Construct your boxes from this, and the only thing you'll likely ever have to do is retape the seams. If it were me, I'd make these boxes with tray lids instead of flaps. https://www.coroplast.com/1 point

LOL, good idea, I guess I'll buy new beach chairs on a regular basis. Of course I'd like to find a similar shape and size in plastic, but so far no luck after an initial search but I'll keep hunting.1 point

Oh I remember the days when I used my magnifier as a light source only. Those days long passed and now won't be without one to scroll with. No need to hunch over just set to the perfect height and lock it down with the setscrews. Best invention they ever made.1 point -
Do you have an old cell phone around? Some of the better ones can be used to enlarge an image quite well, and even take a picture when ever you want. Make a bracket or purchase one and attach it to your saw. Some of the cell phones work very well for this. Charley1 point

Okay.. well before spending money for a label maker.. mine wouldn't stick very well on the tubes.. so I ended up taping them on with scotch tape.. which worked very well.. but I wouldn't buy a label maker just to do this.. Just print or hand wright it on some strips of paper and tape it.. save money for more scrolling wood, LOL I also line mine up as you do.. but I have FD blades on the left side and Pegas on the right side..1 point

Not sure if the lenses come out on the one I have or not.. But Bushton sells a mag light and they also sell a replacement 5" 3x lens.. somewhere when saw shopping I seen someone selling the mag light with 3x and 5x lens might have been when I was looking at Hegners site.. Advancedmachinery.com ? Here is the lens from Bushton http://stores.bushtonhawkstore.com/3-diop-lens-for-mag-light/1 point

This is a link to the light. It does a very good job of lighting my cutting surface. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FIYJXAQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The blade size is written on the side of the tube with red paint marker, but in the picture it dosen't show up for some reason. A label maker is a good idea though, I might have to pick one up soon. I also have the blades in the slots in order of on the left of the machine is spirals from smallest to largest and right of the machine is straight blades smallest to largest and all of my blades are Flying Dutchman so no need to separate by brand.1 point -
I had an Ottlite desk lamp. Very nice but it was not a magnifier just a light. I'll Google the Ottlite magnifier.1 point

That wing cutter thing.... I don't know what brand or quality of one that I have but I'm not quite sure why I still have it around here... the thing I have makes a better piece of scrap metal than a tool... LOL How big a hole you thinking Ray? guessing like 4" if you're doing coasters.. I have a large hole saw kit.. and I've used it without the center drill.. with or without the drill.. it doesn't leave all that smooth of an edge..1 point -

You'll have fun with it. I have an XCarve and really like it. It's a lot of fun to mix woodwoking and computers. One thing I have found, it isn't fast by any means. But on the plus side, it can be working while you're working on other things. It's great for v-carving signs, which will help your business a lot (they're great sellers). It's also really great for making templates for larger woodworking projects. I even use it for making dados and rabits when I'm too lazy to do it the proper way....it takes a lot more time, but super accurate.1 point -
How do you know what blade is what in those tubes? I don't see any markings in the tubes.. I have a little dymo label maker that I made up stickers so i know what blade tube is what...1 point

Looks great Dave. I have no idea on pricing, but, if you really don’t want to sell it, set what you consider a really high price for it so it probably won’t sell, BUT if it does, you will know someone appreciated your work and was willing to compensate you for it by paying that price. Win-Win.1 point
