another challenge for me
Dave Monk and 10 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Bernd, sent me another of his wonderful patterns and challenged me to try and cut it. Last time it was the B25 where I changed the font and heard so many people ask about it. This time it is the 1936 Duesenberg. What a beautiful car from the past. I was a little afraid the all the uprights of the grill were going to get broken because they are not supported by anything at the tops of them, but I managed to cut them without an incident. Overall I am pleased with the outcome and eventually I will make a frame for it and hang it on my computer room wall. I do not have the cutting skill of Bernd, as you all already are aware of, but for me, I came out 90 % happy with the end results. I cut it approx. 11 X 15 inches and changed to pattern to a lighter color so I could see my blade better, then when it was black and white. I did change the pattern a little but took on most of the challenges in it. I used a Pegas #3 and a #1spiral to cut this one. I have 4 days left before we have company from Germany and then we will be going on a hot air balloon ride the day she leaves and 3 days later we are off to Oregon for 2 1/2 months, so no shop time for most of the summer. One of the good parts about that trip is, I will have the opportunity to visit my good friend, Scrappile a couple of times. Dick heppnerguy11 points -

Armed Forces Day Pattern
heppnerguy and one other reacted to baggetta for a topic
Armed Forces Day is celebrated on May 18 and this is a nice table sign to recognize this important day to all the men and women who make sacrifices to keep our country safe. This piece is easy enough to cut out. The lettering is big and bold and the stars which represent the six departments of service are large enough to cut easily. I cut this from another variegated blank I made of several woods. The off cut from the base show the tops of the stars so I decided to make that part of the base. The bottom of the base is a nice piece of maple. Hope you enjoy working with this pattern. You can download the free pattern from my FREE PATTERN page.2 points -

I have a 3 dioptre LED magnifier which works well for me. @Rockytime here is an online dioptre to focal length converter you might find useful: http://www.bbastrodesigns.com/diopterToFocalLengthConverter.html Rob2 points -
Hi Smudger. Thanks for the comment. I bought the lights a long time ago and cannot remember where from, here is a link to the same lights. I have them in 20 lights to the string. For this project I cut them down so only 4 LED's are being used. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20-30-100-LED-Battery-Micro-Rice-Wire-Copper-Fairy-String-Lights-Party-White-/1926225976222 points

Okay I have the solution, only, you young whipper-snappers will not remember them. You need one of those magnifying thingies they use to set in front of the old small screen TV sets. Mount it in front of your saw, reach around it to scroll! Both my magnifiers have to be close to the work. They are a 2.5X and a 1.5X and there is not much difference in focal length that I can tell. I do know that the one with the LED is too bright now that I have had cataract surgery. I may have to experiment with some different bulbs for it. a2 points

Well, you took a cute little Steve Good pattern and put your own talents to it and came up with something that is truly unique and one of a kind. It is a really cute and way more fun piece by adding the different wood colors and then the lights. Perfect. Nice job on the video too Dick heppnerguy1 point -
Are your footpads outside the steel base legs? The Hegner stand is narrow and I can't comfortably position both feet inside the legs. The wider stance of my Excalibur stand allows for a very natural foot position and i have both footpads mounted between the steel legs. Based on your comments I will move ahead with my Hegner base. It will have to be rectangular because of the Porta-mate hardware. Thanks for your comments.1 point

Consider the lighting in the shop and your home, computer. Frequency of light and type of light has a lot to do with eyestrain. My wife suffers from light triggered migraines. We live in a place with blackout curtains. For years I could see the flicker of fluorescent light. Haven't used one in years and used the old bulbs with dimmers. The light intensity can be a problem too. I did a lot of study at one time for my wife, cause she suffered from migraines teaching school. Consulting a 'Lighting Engineer' he gave me a brand of fluorescent bulbs to replace everyone in the room at our cost. At least she didn't have migraines in the classroom. Science has studied the effects of blue light on computer screens. I looked at this years and years ago and science has advanced. At least I found there is such a thing as 'lighting engineers' that do it for a living. Type of lights, freq. intensity 'LUEMS', are all figured on this, some optical and eye MDS may know this field also. It's vast, but I believe it may be one solution that has an answer. My wife and I are semi-retired living in a dark room so I stopped the research for now. RJF1 point -

Inlaid Trinket Box
John B reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Thank you for the link. A worthwhile read for sure. This project has to be ranked as one of the top 10 if not the best ever shown here. I am still in awe and jealous at the same time I sure wish Dave would consider doing a tutorial here for the site on his methods. Even if he showed us all we would not be able to complete work like that he has a talent and has been doing this for awhile. Just knowing the right angles to cut at and cut with precision is outstanding. I had made this box for the IAP contest this year and have shown it and my inlay work is basic because I just recessed the oval. I would have loved to do the entire thing using his method. I have another box I am working on that would be nice to use this method also.1 point -

Long ago I used a head band magnifier, it killed my neck. I went to a ring lamp magnifier. Originally a salvaged fluorescent tube one but I did not like the light and was always worried that he arm on my Hawk would break the tube when a blade broke. I now have an Led magnifier, not absolutely sure which Diopter. I can wear my glasses and sit comfortably, no more crick in my neck. This may answere some questions Diopter Chart for picking a ring lamp magnifier.
