Alleluia banner
barb.j.enders and 7 others reacted to sst17 for a topic
The pastor at our church asked me if I could design an Alleluia banner for our Easter service. This is what I came up with. I designed the pattern using Inkscape and cut it on my DeWalt scroll saw. It measures 19" x 19" and was cut from 1/4" oak plywood. I put a 1/4" birch backer behind it that I painted black. It was a hit when we unveiled it Sunday morning!8 points -

Some of the cutting I have done. Have been trying to stack cut with paper between. The paper is getting stuck as the glue softens when cutting. Have to spend time cleaning the paper off. Sometimes it comes away no problem. Other times, not so much. These are my own photos take at Lake of the Woods. 7x5 size 81 pieces. Photo glued to 1/4" ply, finished the back, light spray of finish over the photos. It takes about 2.5 hours to cut using the Niqua 2/0 puzzle blades.5 points -

another challenge for me
Dave Monk and 2 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Bernd, sent me another of his wonderful patterns and challenged me to try and cut it. Last time it was the B25 where I changed the font and heard so many people ask about it. This time it is the 1936 Duesenberg. What a beautiful car from the past. I was a little afraid the all the uprights of the grill were going to get broken because they are not supported by anything at the tops of them, but I managed to cut them without an incident. Overall I am pleased with the outcome and eventually I will make a frame for it and hang it on my computer room wall. I do not have the cutting skill of Bernd, as you all already are aware of, but for me, I came out 90 % happy with the end results. I cut it approx. 11 X 15 inches and changed to pattern to a lighter color so I could see my blade better, then when it was black and white. I did change the pattern a little but took on most of the challenges in it. I used a Pegas #3 and a #1spiral to cut this one. I have 4 days left before we have company from Germany and then we will be going on a hot air balloon ride the day she leaves and 3 days later we are off to Oregon for 2 1/2 months, so no shop time for most of the summer. One of the good parts about that trip is, I will have the opportunity to visit my good friend, Scrappile a couple of times. Dick heppnerguy3 points -

Unboxing The CNC Finally

Bet you can wait to start on 3d stuff as well as signs.2 points -
Good for you Kevin, I also look forward to your progress. I hope more people get over this animosity towards new tools and technology. CNC will not replace the scroll saw it will enhance what we do with it. Especially for you Kevin making signs etc, will certainly be a plus for your business. Melanie I looked at that other thread and saw some of what you have done with your machine. Obviously you have the enhanced software and are doing true 3D work. Kevin learning the software will suck up some time. You bought a great machine and the dedicated water cooled spindle was a great add on as I believe that the motor speed and on/off is controlled by the software.2 points

Good luck Kevin. Looks like the same brand one we bought a little over a year ago for our joint Christmas gift. I am the only one who has used it so far though! We got it when they were offering the free laser module at the time as I recall so we do not have the spindle but have a router with ours. They offered the free spindle the next year. They are fun, make sure you watch the tutorial videos and do some of those projects first to get your feet wet. Let me know if I can help in any way. I haven't worked with ours in a while so I am afraid I may be back to square one in trying to use it to make anything though. If you look in the sub-forum, "Other Woodworking" both Roly and I shared some projects we did with the CNCs. (We weren't brave enough to discuss in the main forum - we didn't want to get lynched and thrown out of the Village. ) This is the thread where Roly says he is getting one of those "dreaded machines" and I showed him some of my first projects with it https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/29599-the-dreaded-cnc/ Then there are several threads spread throughout where Roly showed some of the work he has done with his.) Look forward to seeing what you do with yours.2 points

Inlaid Trinket Box

I modified one of Steve Goods patterns to make this. I am participating in the Denton Texas Art and Jazz Festival the end of the month. Getting kinda nervous about it. It is a two and a half day event with attendance around 200,000 people. Sure hope the weather is good because I have been working the past three months in preparation for it. First time for something this big for me. Having a tough time knowing what to price this piece. I'm not really anxious to sell it. I doubt if many people will appreciate the time that went into it. Leave it the way it is and let everybody study it to read it. They'll all think it was meant to be that way. I think it looks cool.1 point -
The CNC will probably make a much bigger mess in 10 minutes than a scroll saw could do in a couple days... The laser on the other hand.. that has to have a computer to operate it.... and the dust is probably a fire hazard.. so that machine is set up..upstairs. The CNC is supposed to be able to run off a flash / thumb drive..Those that do run a computer usually make an enclosure under the table.. I think..1 point

Well the magnification dilemma ended this morning. My $25 1.25X mag light arrived this morning. I was not expecting much and was very pleasantly surprised. The lamp is very well constructed although the lid reminds me pf a toilet cover. It dropped into the old mounting and was plugged in. It is LED and the light appears a little more bluish than the the other lamp bit is pleasant. The focal length is ideal. I now sit upright which is a delight. The glass optic is 5" diameter and the focus is very crisp. I did find that it was much sharper when I did not wear my reading glasses. Also, when wearing magnifiers It was necessary to look over or under them when looking at something else. This gives me complete vision freedom. My back appreciates it.1 point

Rolf, I have the VCarve Desktop version of the software that comes with the machine. There is an upgraded version called VCarve Pro and then their ultimate upgrade which does the 3D work which is their Aspire program. There is so much in their desktop version that I have yet to learn that I decided it will probably be a while before I even think I need to upgrade. the router speed and on/off is also controlled by the software as well.1 point

I am getting excited and nervous at the same time, LOL... Not a cheap outfit to buy and no very little about using it.. When I bought it.. I thought I'd probably not use it much.. something I thought I'd use more is the stand alone Laser cutter I bought.. I unpacked that thing and there is sits.. powered up the machine once... never even fired the laser yet.. and it's still setting there doing nothing.. I hope to get some time to play around with both machines this summer.. also have a real busy summer plans for camping etc.. so.. who knows what will actually get done, LOL... I've tripled down the last few days building up some of my inventory that has been sold out since it's been getting warmer out.. Only sold out of about 64 clocks and nearly 80 different styles of ornaments.. plus I'll be making some that are low on stock.. I like to try to keep 20 of each style on hand for the ornaments.. and 2-3 each of the clocks.. and as many as 5 or better each of the popular selling clocks.. so I've got a few weeks work to get caught up... Momma always told me work before play.. so I think that means build up my inventory... then if time permits.. play with the CNC and laser machines My plan for the CNC was to make some signs and also do some inlay work.. the inlay work I want to do is with cutting boards.. also the laser may be used to do some engraving on the cutting boards.. but may also end up making some of my own logos to sign my work pieces with.. But.. who knows.. by the time I learn to run them... I may have changed my whole plan, LOL1 point

Had my first event, was supposed to be 2 days (Friday and Saturday) but a threat of storms and wind Friday caused me to err on the side of caution and I didn't attend day 1. I arrived bright and early this morning for day 2 and set up. Beautiful weather, huge crowd but mostly just lookers. Had a good day selling 56 puzzles in just 6 hours. I had a goal of 100 for the 2 days, so I'm happy with 56 for 1 day. My biggest 1 day event is next Saturday. Sold 95 each of the last 2 years so of course that's the goal for this year. EDIT - The last 2 years at my best 1 day event I was still selling the raw kids puzzles at half the price of my signature puzzles. Now that I don't sell them, I need to sell 80 signature puzzles this year to hit the same amount of $$$ as the past 2 years at the upcoming event. And the fun begins! Iggy1 point

Scrolling With Magnification

I strongly recommend you try before you buy. I originally bought one that was well rated through AMAZON. Could not use it. Things were blurry and gave me an instant headache. Even had my wife and neighbor tried it with the same results. Returned it which is no simple process where I live. I used the one that Judy Gale Roberts sells after taking a class. It works great. Worth every penny.1 point -

If you have an arts store nearby they probably have them. They use them on drafting tables and that is where you will find the better ones. Or use that word for a search.1 point -

I have a Ottlite which came with two lens. I bought it at JoAnns Fabrics and they always have coupons for up to 40% off. For my eyes, it works very well with a wide field of view.1 point -
I have two of what many would consider to be "expensive" high end magnifying lights. I bought them from Judy Gale Roberts after having used them in her classroom studio. You can find them on her site here: https://intarsia.com/collections/hardware/products/new-led-daylight-slimline-magnifying-lamp It comes with 2 different diopter lenses that are 5" wide. It has little to no distortion even at the edges of the lenses. I have been using mine for about 3 years now. I couldn't scroll without it. I need the light and the magnification. As I noted, it comes with two different lenses (1.75X and 2.25X) that you can swap in or out. I would say they are indeed high quality with little distortion. After buying the first one at Judy's, I decided I needed a second one for the second saw I had. Instead of buying another one from Judy and since this was a saw that was not my "main" saw, I thought I would save a little money and buy a cheaper one. I think I tried two. Neither of them were nearly the quality of the one bought from Judy's shop. The lenses were not the same quality and had a lot more distortion with them especially around the edges, and there were "shadows" that I don't get with the one I bought at Judy's. As a result, I got rid of those and got a 2nd one from Judy and haven't looked back. Well worth the expense in my opinion, especially if you use your saws as much as you do Kevin. MFRP is around $260. Judy's price is $152.10 and notes its $20 shipping (but also notes that shipping can vary - she usually only charges actual shipping cost.) This is in part due to how heavy it is (the lenses are very heavy) and the box is not small. It has a spring arm that clamps on. Mine are both clamped on my saws and I don't get any vibration that moves it. When I bought the second one, I decided to look around and see if I could find it cheaper then I could at Judy's site. I looked at Amazon and the Manufacturer's site and both were more then at Judy's site. I just checked both again. On Amazon, there are 3 listings. 2 are much higher and then there is one listing slightly cheaper then Judy's and list it with free shipping ($149.95 and free shipping so perhaps a savings of about $2 on the light and the shipping cost.) I know if anything was wrong - Judy would attempt to make it right though. The Amazon listings I found are here: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Daylight+Slimline+LED+Magnifying+Lamp&rh=p_89%3ADaylight&dc&qid=1556194395&rnid=2528832011&ref=sr_nr_p_89_1 It is $255 on the Manufacturer's site and appears to show free shipping from there: https://daylightcompany.com/slimline-led-magnifying-lamp-daylight-25030.html.html I will also note that I did not have to pay shipping for the ones I bought from Judy because I live about 40 minutes away from her shop. The first one I bought while I was in an Intarsia class there and brought it home. The second one, I also bought when I went back for a second class. Because I live local, I didn't have to worry about shipping it home or getting it home if I had flown in for a class. I do know that if they every went out, I would quickly be seeking the same quality light as quickly as possible. I know several others who have taken her classes have also purchased the light after using them in her classes. I know that @NC Scroller Scott also bought one when I bought mine as we were in the same class.1 point

These look great, I don't know whether it's the wood grain or if you have added something to them that makes them look old and weathered or a little rusty.1 point

Our kitchen counter doesn't have much of a lip. I use C clamps with a little padding to clamp a custom wooden box to the counter. The lower part clamps the counter, the top 'shelf' is used to attach kichen accessories, meat cutter, pasta roller..... the metal c clamps are rock solid and then I can clamp other things that use less quality clamps. Simple screw up, glue up box with enough room for the c clamps to get into the lower shelf and the gadgets clamp to the top. The box sits ON the counter. The same thing can be used around the shop. Looks great Dave. I have no idea on pricing, but, if you really don’t want to sell it, set what you consider a really high price for it so it probably won’t sell, BUT if it does, you will know someone appreciated your work and was willing to compensate you for it by paying that price. Win-Win.1 point
