Working on a wedding present for my son
amazingkevin and 8 others reacted to koehler788 for a topic
My future daughter in law asked me to make her and my son this cross for their wedding. She is going to distress the cross and add the " nails and rope"the finished pic is what she showed me and the other is what I came up with. It is unassembled awaiting for her to do the cross. I will assemble everything after she gets her lettering and cross painted. This is not my forte and I am for sure that I won't be doing anymore large projects like this...lol9 points -

I wanted to do a desk sign for a friend that was helping us with some landscaping ideas......I asked for help and got some great choices from the Village pattern makers....I used patterns by Bobscroll and DJ.....But want to shout out to Wayne Mahler and Grampa Paul for their help as well !.....For those of us that scroll but do not have the skills to draw patterns you guys are life savers !...The first one is by Bobscroll and is cut from 3/4 BB with a cedar base....I could not decide which mystery wood to use for DJ's pattern so cut one of each...also 3/4 material ...Thanks again for all the help !...Steve.6 points -
Latest Scroll Saw Shell
barb.j.enders and 4 others reacted to britetomro for a topic
This is my latest Scroll Saw Shell. The wood used us Sapele and I also used a Hard Maple Veneer as an accent strip between each segment. There are 44 segments total in this shell. The overall measurement are 8" wide by 8" high. The stand was also made from Sapele which were the left over pieces from the blanks used to create the segments. Each segment blank measured approximately 9" wide by 7" deep and 1 3/4" thick. The finish is a spray poly which presently has 8 coats. The photos also show all 44 segments displayed before the gluing process as well as a few of the stages of the glue up. There are many hours of sanding involved with this project and the finish is applied as the shell is being assembled. This piece of art will also be entered into our local fair this July. Thanks for looking.5 points -

The ship of the infamous Captain Bligh lives on in this wood piece. I cut the ship from sapele wood and the most difficult part is the beginning lettering, but not impossible if you take your time. I had a small piece of spalted maple I shaped into a top layer of the base and shaped another bottom layer again from sapele. Makes a nice piece for display. The free pattern above is available for download on my FREE PATTERNS page linked from the Index page on my website. New Video On YouTube I generally cut my signs with a 5, 7, or 9 Reverse tooth saw, depending on the thickness of the wood, so I don't need a lot of blade storage area. I came up with some little magnetic cases built out of birch ply wood which I attach to my saw so my blades are handy. So I made a short video on how these are made in case some other scroll saw users would like to build some. You can view the video on My YouTube Channel. If you like it, please click the like button and subscribe to the channel so you will be alerted when I put up a new video. Thanks for watching. Comments welcome.5 points -

I finished this on Monday, May 13th, actually took several Mondays. The pattern is by Jacob Fowler and found in "Woodworker's Pattern Book". I used 1/2" Mahogany 8" x 12" with 3/4" Red Oak for the base. The base has a slot to hold the upright. I used FD UR #1 and #5 blades. The finish is three coats of spray Polyurethane Clear Satin. Comments welcome.3 points -
The set of Pegas blade clamps that I ordered from QTE turned up today. Took 3 days from the time I ordered to hit Melbourne from the US then 11 days from Melbourne to Kal. Aussie post's stage must of thrown a wheel or a couple of the horses dropped dead Easy to fit and set up on the Ex21. Tensioning is a breeze, I never thought they could improve on the original Excalibur system, but !. Locating the blade and tightening the thumb screws seems easier. They are pretty and they came packaged in a plastic box fit for the crown jewels, shame it just has to go in the bin. Came just in the nick of time as the original lever was beginning to let go every so often this morning.'3 points

Pegas clamps

I replaced my DW788 with the Pegas, can't say it vibrates less but they do clamp and seem easier blade changes. I have since ordered a new Seyco saw. and will be driving to the U.S tomorrow to pick it up2 points -
Yeah It's amazing John, I can get things quicker from America than I can from Queensland, sometimes cheaper too. The new blade clamps are the best thing since sliced bread. Enjoy. Marg2 points

A friend of mine saw my Vacation Plaques and said he would pay a good price for one of his own. I reached out to Bob and he gladly obliged. I am again Thankful for Bob and his talent as a pattern maker and expiditing those patterns so I could get them done so soon. Bob, I am so grateful as always for the help and patience with me. I may be reaching out sooner than I planned...lol2 points -

I vape and I was at the shop talking to the owner. He asked how my recovery was going and we talked about what I was doing while off work. Long story short! He asked if I could do one of his logos and I said YEP, EASY. I can have it tomorrow. He said when I bring it in, find something in the store for trade. We will continue to adorn his shop. Ever Here (Bereavement) Table Sign Pattern
frankorona and one other reacted to baggetta for a topic
The passing of a loved one is always an earth shaking event and people often send flowers, lamps, wreaths and other items to help sooth the pain. This table sign might help by offering comfort to the situation. Mine is cut from Sapele wood, a nice soft chocolate wood, and as usual I used the off cut to make an improvised layered base. The top layer and sign were then mounted on a piece of maple. Done in a fine wood it makes an impressive display piece. In my newsletter I also explain how you can use other cut off pieces to make your bases and signs really stand out. If you haven't signed up for my newsletter, please do so in the form at the top of my Free Pattern Page, where you can also download this free pattern:2 points -

Volkswagen Table Sign Pattern
Phantom Scroller and one other reacted to baggetta for a topic
Here's another car name and shape made as a table ornament sign. I wanted to give a traveling effect to this sign so I placed it upon an off cut from another sign and made it look like the long and winding road. I cut the sign from 1/4" birch ply and the base is cut from Sapele and both are given a coat of clear seal. I put a second picture up so you can get a better idea of what the base looks like. There is an old saying "There is never enough time to do it right but always enough time to do it over." I love designing and scrolling signs and Bible verses in Cherry. There is nothing more frustrating than losing a drop out well toward the end of the project. I have learned something that should have been obvious to me. I share it for those who may enjoy the same subject matter. When designing the bridges, try to retain the maximum long grain wood structure. The attached PDF shows script letters (Palace Script font) that have notoriously narrow and fragile bridges that can easily turn your masterpiece into kindling. The first column is an okay way to build your bridges. The second is better with a slight difference that retains more of the long grain in the wood and makes the drop outs just a bit stronger. By changing the location and angle of the bridge, you retain more of the long grain of the wood a d g o q.pdf1 point

Latest Scroll Saw Shell
Scrappile reacted to britetomro for a topic
These shells are really not as difficult as they would appear. Get Steve Garrison's ebook. Watch the youtube videos and get started. Do your first one with a 2x4. If you make mistakes, so what. If the mistakes are too bad, throw it away and start again. Your first 2x4 shell can come from a simple 14" long piece of wood. My first shell was glued together without any sanding or finishing. I wanted to really understand the gluing process and was concerned with keeping the shell centered from the inside to the outside. I still have that shell and learned a lot from this process. With using a 2x4 the overall costs were almost non-existent in materials and a shell like this can usually be cut in under 2 hours. Give one a try and in the end they are no doubt unique and a centerpiece of attention. Ron1 point -

Good Neighbors
frankorona reacted to baggetta for a topic
Often this quote from Robert Frost makes a lot of sense. In some cases you might need a big fence in others you might only need an outline, like the one in this pattern. In any event I cut mine from 1/4" birch ply and mounted it on a rather exotic base of Lati wood, a scrap from another project that I shaped as a nesting place for the sign. Keep The Beat
frankorona reacted to baggetta for a topic
If you have ever been in a doctor's office or the hospital, you know the importance of the nurse. Out of respect for their position in the medical world I submit RN Keep The Beat. Might make a nice gift for a nurse you know. I cut mine from a thick slab of Peruvian Walnut and used the off cut to shape a wave pattern for the top layer of the base. As with the Golf Club pattern, I placed the assembly on a slab of pine and finished it all off with a clear spray. This was another pattern request from a donor to this page. Golf Club Table Sign Pattern
frankorona reacted to baggetta for a topic
One of my Free Page donors asked if I could do several patterns, so I will be posting those as I complete them. This is the first for golfers, following the idea of the Archery Club I designed earlier. I cut this one from 1/4" walnut and used the off cut reshaped for the top layer of the base. I used pine for the bottom of the base. Free Pattern available:1 point -

Trivets / Hot Pads
frankorona reacted to aj43 for a topic
This is a revision of an old project. Years ago I tried relief carving a red oak trivet. I did not have the right tools or skills, so I set it aside for another time. Not long ago I heard my granddaughter and some of her friends were moving into an apartment for their senior year at college. Looking for something unique to give granddaughter for an "apartment warming" present I came across the old trivet. I decided maybe I could do a better job scrolling the lettering instead of carving. I used the old lettering for a pattern, dividing it into two trivets - a small one for bowls and pans, a larger one for casseroles and large pans. Trivets are 3/4" poplar stained with GF nutmeg gel stain, topcoated with clear shellac and three coats of wipe-on satin Arm-R-Seal. When I made my first trivets several years ago I worried if a hot bowl or pan would scorch the wood or melt the finish. Another woodworker had tested finishes for reactions to heat or other liquids/chemicals. Arm-R-Seal came out on top. To test it myself, I placed a single sheet of typing paper over a trivet and placed an iron on its highest setting on the trivet. After two minutes the paper was lightly scorched, but there was no damage to the trivet. The Arm-R-Seal came through with no softening or any other distress. I have kept track of those first trivets - they were given to family members - and after five years they have all weathered well with only normal wear from abrasions along the edges. All-in-all the poplar and Arm-R-Seal combination holds up well.1 point -
