Iraq Veterans Table Sign Pattern
MTCowpoke22 and 2 others reacted to baggetta for a topic
Iraq Veterans Table Sign Pattern This idea was suggested by one of my donors and I've tried something a little bit different with this piece. Combined a male and female soldier along with an amazing sky filled with clouds and jet over an empty field with a jeep. To make the piece stand out I added a backing board panel. The piece could stand well without the backing board, but the shadows it creates adds to the total effect. This all sits on a slab of mahogany. The sign itself is cut from about 1/4" poplar with a nice grain to it. Hope you enjoy it. Free Pattern3 points -
Basket Star
frankorona and 2 others reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
This is a pattern Steve Good posted several weeks ago. I like making baskets, so I thought I would give this a try. I modified the pattern slightly by adding a 1/2" Hard Maple base. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood. It is 8" in diameter at the widest part and 4" high. I used FD UR #1 blades and finished with spray Polyurethane Clear Satin. Comments welcome.3 points -
See what I did there? 😉

#1 Dad Table Sign Pattern Father's day roll around and there is a need for a gift for dear ol' dad. Well maybe this sign might do the job. Pictures dad on his climb to the top supported by love. I cut this from maple wood and used the cut off to shape a top layer for the base. The bottom layer is made from a slab of mahogany. When I cut the center of the heart I thought maybe it would make a good addition to the base, so I added it as a pseudo inlay on the top of the deck. Was also going to used the cut out stars on the base as well, but felt it would be too much, so I saved them for maybe another project later on. Used up most of this blank. Free Pattern:3 points

8 Layer Starburst pattern by Alex Fox
MTCowpoke22 and one other reacted to britetomro for a topic
I completed this project a few months back. The original pattern by Alex Fox was approximately 7" square and was designed as a single piece. Wanting more I decided to up the stakes. Wanting something to really show a presence for display I enlarged the pattern so each quarter of the pattern was 11" square. I stack cut each layer by 4 pieces with 1/8" baltic birch ply. Overall there are 8 layers to this project. The next step after gluing the 8 layers together was to sand the edges to create perfect 90 degree corners so no gaps showed where the 4 quarters of the project were glued together. The frame is made of 2" thick popular with walnut applied to the corners for a slight contrast. Overall this project measures over 24" square. Thanks for looking.2 points -

Been away from the saw for 2 1/2 months with a bad back and some other medical issues. Not exactly cured, but finally could finish up some intarsia projects where the parts were sitting around. Also cut out a wolf pattern just to see if I stilled had a little sawing MOJO. Nothing spectacular, but it felt good to get back into the swim of things.2 points -

Two Ladies

G'day all, have just finished these 4 portraits of Marilyn and Audrey. Audrey Hepburn was the most beautiful woman ever (with the exception of the wife) IMHO 440mm x 360mm. 3mm marine ply from Bunnings, Couldn't tell you what the veneer is, probably some Indonesian rainforest timber. The frames are Radiata Pine 2 stained walnut and 2 stained dark mahogany. I cut these with a #1FD new spiral and a #2 FDUR I can't remember who did the patterns, I want to say that Audrey is by Grandpa but ????????2 points -
I always leave mine full, and it's hard wired, but I turn off the breaker when I won't be in the shop. It's a 5 hp 80 gallon unit. Every day that I use it, I open the condensate drain for a few seconds, so I never worry about condensate laying in the bottom of the tank and rusting it. There is a large piece of galv steel pipe with a reducer on each end that forms a collection reservoir in the condensate drain line with a ball valve on the outlet end of it. The drain then goes over and out through the side wall of my compressor shed with an elbow pointing down on the end of it. When I open the ball valve the compressed air in the compressor tank blows the condensate out of this reservoir. It scares the ducks and geese on the lake that's nearby, but I would be happy if it kept them from coming over here anyway. They are filthy buggers. Charley2 points

Wedding puzzle

Thanks for sharing John. A great idea for a lovely wedding momento. I am sure the receiving couple loved it.2 points -
Agreed, the Hegner is a great saw, but like the Hawk, it's not aggressive at all and that's fine, they have their purpose. I already use the Pegas Modified Geometry blades which I have found to be the most aggressive (and best cutting).2 points
-
Or, maybe try a more aggressive blade on it?.. That is something I can't figure about those that advertise the Hegner as a "production" saw. It certainly is as far a durability, but it is probably one of the least aggressive saws there is. The same blade type cuts a lot different on my Hegner than it does on my Seyco. I would assume that for production you would want speed. I'm old and slow.....2 points

Looking through some old photos of my work and I came across this. I made it for my mates wedding. A puzzle piece for each guest. They all signed their pieces and then had a bit of fun placing their piece in the correct position. I also made a box for the couple to keep the puzzle in, but have no pics of that. It turned out to be a treasured keepsake. Just an idea that some may like to use.. Cheers1 point

Yeah I agree Dewalt is a good tool. I even mentioned that in my post. But what I’m saying is I try never to buy Dewalt because imo they are over priced. Just not a good value. I agree cordless tools is a different ballgame than scroll saws but I even feel the dw788 is over priced for a little more you bump up into the Excalibur’s, seyco or Pegas saws. Im off topic of the op now. I just wanted to explain what I meant. What I’m saying is if it’s a toss up between Dewalt and another quality tool you’re going to get more value from most other names. Just my two cents. lol1 point

Nothing scares me; I am a teacher
MTCowpoke22 reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
My daughter, Kathleen, is a special needs teacher in a Toronto inner-city school. Her speciality is remedial reading. She has certainly earned this plaque which I recently made for her: Sue Mey designed the pattern. I cut it out of 6mm thick Baltic Birch plywood. I made the backing and the frame out of Walnut.1 point -

I've played around with my Excalibur and also find it doesn't make a huge difference in the cutting speed / time.. I think this short link arm style types saws all cut about the same way.. The difference between the Pegas / Ex saws from the DeWalt is the SPM ( strokes per minute) .. The Pegas and like saws only run at top speed 1500 SPM where as the DeWalt runs 1750 SPM.. I don't cut many puzzles.. and don't cut much of any wood over 5/8" thick.. When I do cut thicker wood.. ( puzzles ) I do NOT use the Hawk simply for the reason you mention.. they cut slow..1 point

Seems there are as many opinions as models so I'll throw my two bobs worth in. I have an 18v Dewalt hard usage for about 15 years with one battery buggered. It is Ni cad so can no longer get a genuine Dewalt battery but have found a source that is reasonable. My Son bought me an AEG 18v for Christmas, and it is a little beaut. Light and small compared other 18/20v tools. As for corded drills I have an aluminium Skill, probably older than I am and still going, an Orange B&D my wife bought for me when first married on special for $14 at KMart. A Skill/sher from the late 70's and a 3/4 Makita from the 70's all going well. I could not count the number of battery drills I have had and chucked over the years, mainly due to batteries buggering up. Stay tuned for volume 2 next week1 point

HD currently has a promotion with Ryobi. Buy set of two 3ah batts with charger and bag for $99, get a free tool. I got 1/2" hammer drill yesterday for free, $69 value. It's on a promotional setup in center aisle. May be worth considering...1 point

Pegas saw
OCtoolguy reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
Are you able to adjust the motor mounting on the Pegas, to increase/decrease aggressiveness, similar to the EX?1 point -
Hey Bill, Overall it's a fine saw... It's smooth, it hasn't given me any issues, although I'm having blade slippage issues in the top clamp that I can't quite figure out, but that's nothing serious. My only minor issue is that it isn't quite as aggressive as the DW and for 99% of folks that's not a problem. Folks who know me know that I love the DW due to the fact that it cuts very aggressively and I have simply gotten accustomed to that and when I cut on a slower saw it's like coming up on a small town and having to drive 35mph after crusing along at 75mph for hours.1 point

Iggy, "I "like it", but I don't necessarily "love it". " Care to elaborate? I'm curious as to what your thoughts are and how you compare it to your DeWalt. Thanks.1 point -

Thanks for sharing Bob. I'll chime in also if folks don't mind. I've been happy with the Pegas saw. I "like it", but I don't necessarily "love it". The big factor will be how long it lasts before I wear it out, so time will tell. I won't be heartbroken if I have to go back to using DW's again. Attached are photos showing my very basic dust collection but it works great, capturing at least 90-95% of all dust from bottom and top and it connects to my Dust Deputy then to a small shop-vac. I had some clear tubing laying around, standard waterline for a fridge icemaker. The light is from one of my DW's. I had to make a small support clip for it in order to get it to extend far enough beyond the front of the blade so as not to cast shadows. Iggy1 point

The newer Ryobi tools with brushless motors are pretty good. If you're not making a living with your cordless tools, they might be worth a look. HD puts a two battery 4ah set on sale every Christmas for $99, so I get one every year. I have about 30 of the tools in their line, and my battery usage is fairly significant, so I get a new set every year.1 point
