    needed to keep busy.

Not having a good day, so went to the shed and kept some company with a Giraffe, a H.Botas pattern. It kept me occupied for a while.

    The Lord Is My Shepherd

Cut this great pattern by @baggetta today. Sadly I think I used the last useable piece of spalted oak I have on this one. Used slate as a base again. I'm using epoxy to mount it.

    hold off for spraying

Saw this on on of my links on handy helper stuff. Really like the idea and how simple it is. You use golf tees in a peg board to hold you project off the surface so you can spray it. The picture sort of shows it all, it is so simple. Will get some tees right away this is super. jim

    #1 Grandpa

#1 Grandpa Table Sign Pattern Well, we had a Dad sign before so now it's time for a grandpa sign. Similar to the Dad sign -- cut from maple with a layered base top of maple cut off on a bed of mahogany. Also used the cut out of the heart as an added accent. Free Pattern:

  6. Some of you are probably already familiar with this lady's work but I just stumbled onto it. Beautiful stuff. I'm curious if she cut this on an angle, on one side it looks like you're looking at it from the left, vise versa on the other. Here's a link to her page. https://www.kimberleyfrancis.com/samples.html

  7. I love this lady's' work. I feel the simplicity really celebrates the wood. And I like the way she uses the knots to simulate the sun or moon. Really peaceful feeling.

    Framing fretwork

Most of the time I don’t. But if I have something that I really like I will. As said in art world “it depends”. This is first big detailed one I did so I went wild and framed it and used glass.

    Basket Star

This is a pattern Steve Good posted several weeks ago. I like making baskets, so I thought I would give this a try. I modified the pattern slightly by adding a 1/2" Hard Maple base. I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood. It is 8" in diameter at the widest part and 4" high. I used FD UR #1 blades and finished with spray Polyurethane Clear Satin. Comments welcome.

  12. My local weekly market usually begins Memorial Weekend but this year the town decided to start it up 2 weeks early, which we all thought was a good idea. Tourists aren't heavy yet, but we figured the locals would enjoy getting out. Week 1 (May 11) was good, not great, but this past Saturday (May 18) was my worst outing at this event in the 3 years I've been doing it. There were several other events happening on the island drawing crowds (nothing arts & crafts related, just beach type stuff) and I knew it would be slow, just not THAT slow. LOL No complaints at all with Memorial weekend coming up, things will get back to normal. The manager of the event is a friend of mine and we chatted mid-way through the day Saturday and he said that nobody was doing well so he'll recommend that they go back to the old schedule next year. one off trivet

Found a solid wood trivet at a local thrift store; I liked the grain pattern so I adjusted a trivet pattern for size and bingo; a one off for the craft fairs.

    Framing fretwork

I'm curious, do you use glass when framing your projects? I'm torn. I live in the desert and using glass has the advantage of preventing another dust magnet, although I feel the glass takes away from the overall look of the piece.

    Outdoor sign

I have a lady who wants a sign fo her back yard. I have made very little things for outside over the years. She has wiener dogs and wants a sign with Wienerland on it.I was thinking in shape of bone with lettering in middle. I would like to know what wood to use and finish or paint? Any idea would be welcome. Thanks for any help. Bob

    2018 Christmas gifts

These are the gifts I made for my family this past Christmas. Since 2010 I have been making ornaments for my daughters, I added my niece and nephew and the guy dating my daughter in recent years. The set of 5 hats was the latest design, all in Cherry. The Tetris sets were for the guys at work (IT department), Cherry, Maple, Walnut and Sasafras. The red Mermaid tail was for my youngest daughter since she was in the musical at high school The Little Mermaid. The anchor was for my older daughters since she joined a local sorority and my wife could not find her letters any where online. The flag ( there are 2) were for my wife and in-laws . That is our town’s school mascot, and similar shape of the Ohio flag.

I have used a non glare glass. Most angles it looks as if there is no glass. I wish I had a picture, but that project was sold as soon as it was done.

  23. I totally agree with what you say here... If I was in a construction or other type business where these tools got used all day long every day.. I'd be buying higher end stuff.. but those prices are way overkill for my needs.. and most my tools in this category don't ever wear out... they need batteries and those cost as much as another cheap set cost.. I only have my DeWalt drill because it was a good deal on Black Friday and it was a $199 set that I bought for $60 with a coupon etc that I had.. I just don't buy stuff unless I'm getting a deal on it.. The only tool in my shop right now that I paid full price for is my new Hawk... Most times I don't buy something unless I feel I can resell it for the same money or at a profit..

  25. HF everyone has their own concept of what is a good tool I guess. Selling junk tool next to better tools I believe hurts them then. Your image is tainted from the junk. The key words used is "Occasionally Used" If I own a tool I want to rely on that tool to be accurate and work when I need it too. There seems to be the love for HF tools so I will back off dissing them. Enjoy them. Work safe. I stand by my statement of my thoughts on HF tools. If it has a motor I am not buying it from there.

    Framing fretwork

I don't frame many pieces, but when I do, I go to Goodwill and buy. They have lots of nice frames, in various sizes. Sometimes add or subtract from the pattern size to fit the frame. Can't make them for what they sell for. jerry

    Framing fretwork

Sometimes I do use glass and other times I dont, I usually buy frames at walmart, but the size I need they don.t have which is 8 1/2 x11, therefore I am in the process of making one, and with no glass.

  32. I have to say that if there had been a Harbor Freight store in our town, back when I was first starting out, I probably would have owned a lot of their tools. The only place we had, with a good selection of woodworking tools at affordable prices was Sears. A lot of my early power tools were Craftsman and I'm still using several of them. As I got older and disposable income was a little easier to come by, my taste in tools became more discriminating. I now have a variety of "name brand" tools in all the colors of the rainbow. I spent a lot more for them and I don't use them as hard as I did when I was younger, but these days I'm looking for tools that will last until I can't use them anymore. I also appreciate tools that I can enjoy using. A quality tool (doesn't have to be the most expensive) is just more enjoyable to use. About 3-4 years ago they opened a Harbor Freight store in town here. It's only a couple miles from where I work and I pass it often. I haven't bought any of their power tools. I really don't need much these days. I did buy a couple of their roofing nailers when I re-roofed my house 2 years ago. I spent less on the pair than I would have paid for one name brand nailer. Since I don't intend to go into the roofing business at this stage of my life, these tools were a decent value and did the job. That's a niche that HF seems to fill quite well, the occasional use tool @ less than 1/2 the price of a name brand. I notice that they have greatly expanded their line of tools and seem to be marketing them as higher quality. HF still wouldn't be my first choice, but if you are comparing them to other entry level tool brands like Lowe's Kobalt, Walmart B&D, etc, then they may be a fair value.

  33. The very best cordless drill I ever had was from Harbor Freight... it was my first cordless and was a Christmas gift... not something I would have chose myself.. but ended up being one awesome tool.. This was 20+ years ago.. and the drill isn't what gave out.. it was the stupid batteries died after 7-8 years of hard work.. and they was some oddball batteries and I couldn't find any replacements.. I built a lot of stuff with that drill and used it as a sander and a wire brush back in my painting days.. On the flip side.. I needed a sawzal for a couple of days when building my shop back in 2012... had a coupon etc and with all the deals I got one for $4.99 LOL.. I only needed it to cut a few sections of 2" PVC pipe.. That saw almost made it through my first cut.. My wife was headed out to town to pick up a few things so i had her swing in to get a replacement.. That saw made it through 4-5 cuts.. and then it went to the trash can.. HF at the time didn't do returns but would exchange under the warranty.. but taking the thing back every few cuts was not going to cut it ( no pun intended ) for me.. Now.. be different if they was across the street.. That all said, I have bought a fair amount of their cheap power tools and have had good luck with it for my intended purpose.. short of that one sawzal.. most stuff has been good to me for the price. I'll also say.. they've stepped up many of their tool lines to some higher quality stuff from what they offered years ago.. and they have more variety from cheap junk to better cheap junk.. Like these drills we've been talking about.. they have some real cheap ones that might get you through a job.. or they have two other lines that are more money but also higher quality..

    clay or ?

I have used 5 minute epoxy (Araldite) and coloured with food colouring, Have also used cheap $2.00 shop eye make-up to colour. Works well About 15 - 20 years ago there was a stained glass fad and one of the ways to make sun-catchers was to colour PVA. Trace the pattern onto clear plastic using black PVA then fill in the areas with tinted PVA. I'm not sure how long it would last, but there is still a couple of them on Dad's Lounge room window.

  41. Ray come on now lets be honest here, when you say you have not had to return any HF tools, how often are you using tools. You mention numerous times you are 80 years old. Most people here are way younger and need tools that will give some longevity so for them that $300 investment could be worth way more than 4 of those $65 tools. I would never buy a power tool from HF. You could not even give me one. Every wood working magazine runs comparison reviews and most are slanted to whatever company has a deal with the magazine so take that for what it is worth. Look at the fine print if going after warrentys. Ask questions before you buy them. I do know being I worked in construction for 43 years I have seen tool selection change from one year to another. The Dewalt line was very popular. But when I started and still this day I own Makitas 9volt. Back then was the king of the hill. What you see today is package deals and that is what drives the sales. The thing is batteries are meant to be used and cycled. If you lay them dormant they go bad. So buying many batteries for tools can prove to be unproductive too. Just my thoughts.

  47. Sorry Brian, I have a tendency to use trade terms, just pull me up like you did, and I'm always happy to explain. It's just sanding lightly 360 or 400 grit paper. This knocks of any dust particles etc and gives a smooth underlay for the topcoat, at the same time lightly scouring the piece so the top coat has something to adhere to. Cheers

  50. Well I am certainly embarrassed. I owe you a BIG apology. Now I don't know this happened. Someone had posted the same pattern awhile ago. I liked it and downloaded it. I had downloaded several patterns by neptune. I cut the designers name off the pattern and leave it on my desk to remind me whose pattern I am cutting. I must have picked up the wrong label. I will say this you certainly create great patterns. I should gain admission before downloading.
