Happy Camper Table Sign Pattern Styled for the outdoorsman this sign might make a nice gift. Tried something a bit different with this piece. I cut the sign itself from 1/4" maple, but I found a large branch from a tree so I split it down the middle with my bandsaw and then shaved off the top side also with the bandsaw to make a flat surface. Glued the sign to it and ended up with a nice rustic base. The bark came out rather shiny and looks almost brown, but was gray bark, after I sealed the whole project. 2018 Christmas gifts
CATRK and 3 others reacted to cooldavion for a topic
These are the gifts I made for my family this past Christmas. Since 2010 I have been making ornaments for my daughters, I added my niece and nephew and the guy dating my daughter in recent years. The set of 5 hats was the latest design, all in Cherry. The Tetris sets were for the guys at work (IT department), Cherry, Maple, Walnut and Sasafras. The red Mermaid tail was for my youngest daughter since she was in the musical at high school The Little Mermaid. The anchor was for my older daughters since she joined a local sorority and my wife could not find her letters any where online. The flag ( there are 2) were for my wife and in-laws . That is our town’s school mascot, and similar shape of the Ohio flag.4 points -

Some of you are probably already familiar with this lady's work but I just stumbled onto it. Beautiful stuff. I'm curious if she cut this on an angle, on one side it looks like you're looking at it from the left, vise versa on the other. Here's a link to her page. https://www.kimberleyfrancis.com/samples.html3 points

Need a new cordless drill
new2woodwrk and 2 others reacted to jerrye for a topic
Something that many aren't aware of is just how much better chance you get of having a working tool when you buy refurb. New has a representative sample, one of x number produced, pulled off the line and tested. Every refurb tool gets tested. So, not only is refurb a better price, it's a tested and proven tool by whoever does the refurbishing, usually the OEM or one of their service vendors. I bought a 10v Makita drill/driver combo from CPO, and it's still going strong after more than a decade of use.3 points -
I too only use the FD Polar for my compound cuts. Either a #5 or #3 depending on the pattern.2 points

Outdoor sign
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to spirithorse for a topic
Here is a simple pattern per your request description. I would probably enlarge it to about 15" wide. (Enlarge by 150 percent if your program uses percentages). One of the best woods for out-side would be cedar. I would probably use 1/2" cedar with a 1/4" Baltic Birch backer painted black. Then generously coat the entire project with a Spar Varnish. Good luck and God Bless! Spirithorse Oops! After posting, I see your request said HOT DOG not DOG BONE. Can you change the shape to a Hot Dog if that is what is preferred?2 points -

I have cut a couple of Steve Good's compound patterns. He recommended 1-1/2 X 1-1/2 pine stock from HD which is perfectly square. Jim Ern created a compound pattern for me and I am having trouble cutting it. Don't know why as I cut that stock before. I don't remember what blade I used but I'm having trouble now.I started with Pegas MG #7 and 9, Olson Skip Tooth #7 and 9, Penguin Silver Reverse #7 and 9, finally FD 2 Way #7. All of the blades will cut (sort of). I tried slow scrolling and fast scrolling. I'm open to blade or other suggestions. Perhaps I just need to change wood. The square pine is handy though. I need to make about six of these patterns.1 point

I have been a Long Time fan of Peanuts,I watch It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown every year,(got it on disc)Yea I know a man in his 60s still watches toons. Guilty. So I found 2 of my Loves Star Trek and Peanuts,Could not make out the artist name, and TaDa!!The Mule is a pattern I found here awhile back.no name on it either, who ever made it,Thanks for a Great pattern.I am Keeping the U.S.S.Snoopy for myself.1 point -
Thank you for all the responses and suggestions. I decided to scrap the pine. I have ordered Basswood 1-3/4 X 1-3/4 X 10". Takes the fight out of things since I need to make several. I made the Steve Good clamp but is too small for this pattern. I'll just use tape. Again, thanks.1 point

I agree totally. I have bought many refurbed tools and electronics. They get better scrutinization.1 point

My understanding on the China made saws is similar.. BUT.. my understanding is the only Excalibur saw made in China was the 21" saw.. and that the 16" are made in the Taiwan plant still.. I'm not saying that the new China made saw's are less quality or junk... BUT.. I would say that the first several made is very possibly less quality.. simply because they are NEW to making them and they always find issues with machinery etc running production on new stuff at first... at least that is my belief.. they may make a very well made saw as was done and still is done at the Taiwan plant.. Back when DeWalt moved from Canada there was all kinds of bad quality on the type 2 saw.. most of that was the first few runs of production at the new plant.. Now most of the type 2's are good saws.. They got a bad reputation on the type 2 saws because of the first few runs of them did have quality issues.. and this is how I think the EX-21's will be.. My saw I wouldn't say is junk but is not the standard I expected from a EX from what others tell me.. But I have had to make many repairs and adjustments that I feel I shouldn't have to have made... My saw had to be one of the first few made since I got it 6+ months before they even released the 21" back on the market.. If I was in the market for a new saw of this style.. I would hold off and buy the Pegas... just from what I've seen with the blade chucks and also what I've seen with how they handle problems..if a issue does arise..1 point

Kev Iv been under the notion that the China made are not as good as the made in Taiwan. I guess this post kind of confirms. The only Taiwan made ex’s that I know of are the kings which aren’t technically ex.but you get the idea, I could be wrong tho. I had my heart set on a 16 inch ex. But all I see are made in China. I would rather spend a little more and get a Pegas 21.. You say they are made in the same plant as pegas and hope for better quality but I thought pegas were made in tawain. This is just an assumption but I would think even if they are the same saws. The quality control is better in Tawain plant.1 point

After replies I think a bone or shape of a Wiener dog would look best. I'm not good at designs. Could someone draw a sign in the shape of a Wiener dog with Wienerland inside dog? The lettering in Zen's post of bone looks great. Thanks for any help. Bob1 point

Zen Scroller my post said bone ans a later post stated a hot dog. Your sample of bone is fine. Bob1 point

I have cut a lot of compound designs, every thing from 3/4 inch to 1 inch and half and using different woods from basswood, pine, red oak, and laminated hardwoods and using different blades such as the Pegus mg 7 & 9, fd polar 5 & 7. Taping the wood helps and the use of a adjustable clamp to hold the project together and make it easier to cut is a must. Steve has a simple pattern to do this. The one thing about pine is the grain and the way it will resist the direction the blade is cutting. You might try poplar as it is available at Lowe's in that size. For me poplar is easier to cut and will finish much better. Erv1 point

Compound Cutting
OCtoolguy reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I'm wondering if the pine maybe has a high pitch content and the sawdust is clogging the kerf a bit? Pine is soft, but it isn't necessarily as easy to scroll as one might think.1 point -
for finish, general finishes 450 or sherwin williams A100 non tinted. both are long lasting. theyre both water based (acrylic latex or sumthin like that) and easy to use. the SW is a house paint and non tinted is without the pigments so it dries clear. theyre both white in the can but dry clear-when applied in thin coats1 point

I've found that sometimes actually going to a smaller blade will cut through better than a larger blade.. That said you have to watch for the blade bowing so be careful not to push through too hard.. I do not have any experience cutting compound cuts so not a lot of offer.. other than the blade size sometimes works...1 point
-
Cutting already? wow. I've tried pine and select pine and had so so luck, bass wood cuts nice. I find it at a hobby store but you can find it on amazon too. search for basswood carving blocks I do use a smaller blade, PMG 5 and almost max speed with a slow feed rate1 point

Compound Cutting

I wrap mine with packing tape. And once cut one one side re-wrap it again with packing tape. Seems to work with for me. Speed is pretty critical doing these types of cuts. As well as making sure your blade in 90 decrees to the table1 point -
Compound Cutting
OCtoolguy reacted to teachnlearn for a topic
I've read some and watch videos on compound cuts. I seem to remember wrapping the wood with blue tape or contact shelf paper, then put the pattern. It seems to keep everything together and keeps the parts from moving as the blade is cutting. You may already have done that, just a thought. RJF1 point -
Another great cutting on a terrific pattern. Where do you get the slate?1 point

I had a shut off ( pressure switch ) failure once.. and it just kept running.. lucky I was in the shop at the time and thought it was running a long time.. but before I could get to it to shut it down the blow-off safety valve went off.. I'd never leave one powered up without being in the shop.. I do leave it with air in it all the time.. run it about 1-2 times a month to fill it back up with air.. Run it much more in the summer months as I always blow the grass off the mowers before putting them away.. had a friend that had a riding mower and a bearing went bad in the mower deck.. he never cleaned off the grass and that bearing got hot enough to set that grass on fire burned his little shed down that he kept yard stuff in.. and of coarse the tractor.. Also.. I never put my mowers back inside right away.. I park them outside for a few hours to cool down before putting them back in the garage..1 point
