    Snap Fasteners

Another slow day so here goes. Went to ACE hardware today. Several younger girls working there. I told one girl she was too young to know what I was talking about. I was describing the fasteners we used to use when storm windows came out and were replaced with screen windows. I needed the fasteners that held the frames in. She finally asked another young fella (46 yo) what they were. He actually knew what they were. So this is what I used them for. Not a big deal but it works.

Good Idea for this. Thats what I like about ACE they usually have someone who knows what I am talking about even if I don't.

    I am Back

Just a short update from a long inactive member. I was serving as a full-caregiver for my 98 yr old Mother until she passed in Oct. I then decided to downsize so bought a small house with nice shop building but moving into something less than half the size creates all kinds of problems. Finally got the move made with the help of some great friends in January. Of course nothing seems to go smoothly. I went out early one morning to get the trash out for pickup and didn't notice that we had received some ice overnight. I fell off the back porch which is about 3 steps up and had 2 fractures and a dislocated foot. It is disconcerting to look down and see your foot dangling off the end of your leg held on only by the skin. I did manage to crawl back into the house and call for help. Within 4 hrs, I was in surgery having a plate and screws putting me back together. This was followed by 5 weeks of being house bound as I was not allowed to put any weight on that leg. Talk about boring. I was going crazy, especially as my new Pegas scrollsaw came and all I could do was set and look at it. Finally convinced my caregivers to let me set it up in the kitchen attached to a shop vac so I could actually try it out and LOVE it. Last week I was pulling weeds in a flower bed and it turns out that they were poison oak so I broke out in a very itchy rash all over. After a shot, it is clearing up and hopefully my tribulations have ended for a while unless you count being under a tornado warning every night. So far we have only gotten rain. A lady is selling rain gauges made from a 5 gal. bucket. Enough of me as I am back to cutting and working on some things for a wedding. It is good to be back.

  8. Happy Camper Table Sign Pattern Styled for the outdoorsman this sign might make a nice gift. Tried something a bit different with this piece. I cut the sign itself from 1/4" maple, but I found a large branch from a tree so I split it down the middle with my bandsaw and then shaved off the top side also with the bandsaw to make a flat surface. Glued the sign to it and ended up with a nice rustic base. The bark came out rather shiny and looks almost brown, but was gray bark, after I sealed the whole project. 2018 Christmas gifts

These are the gifts I made for my family this past Christmas. Since 2010 I have been making ornaments for my daughters, I added my niece and nephew and the guy dating my daughter in recent years. The set of 5 hats was the latest design, all in Cherry. The Tetris sets were for the guys at work (IT department), Cherry, Maple, Walnut and Sasafras. The red Mermaid tail was for my youngest daughter since she was in the musical at high school The Little Mermaid. The anchor was for my older daughters since she joined a local sorority and my wife could not find her letters any where online. The flag ( there are 2) were for my wife and in-laws . That is our town’s school mascot, and similar shape of the Ohio flag.

    #1 Grandpa

#1 Grandpa Table Sign Pattern Well, we had a Dad sign before so now it's time for a grandpa sign. Similar to the Dad sign -- cut from maple with a layered base top of maple cut off on a bed of mahogany. Also used the cut out of the heart as an added accent. Free Pattern:

  14. Thx for the info. “Hold off and go for Pegas sounds like good advice”. i wasn’t aware that the 16 was still produced in tawain. HD is selling them pretty cheap last I checked, but I don’t want it if it’s Chinese. They also sell a King in 16 which I thought was ex just different branding but all I saw were more than I could get a 21 Pegas or around the same price. Not sure why price so high.

  15. Did another one today with a doe and fawn. I used a free paper cutting template for the deer. Got my inspiration from Kimberly Francis. My daughter drew the happy little tree. The font is called Daydreamer, I tweaked it on Inkscape. It’s 9” x 12” on 3/4 pine.

  18. i think i have posted before that Dyslexia has kicked my but my whole life. it is not that i can not read but long reads become a jumble of words that loose a lot of meaning until i have read it many times. this is why i always "wait for the movie". being a fan of Adam Savage of Mythbusters became a downer knowing he had written a book that i am sure would not make it to film. when the preface was released it took me 4 readings over 5 days to remember only 25% of what i had read. THEN i found he recorded the audiobook himself. i got it 2 weeks ago and it is wonderful! it was great to hear that i had so much in common with this "Maker" of so many things and learning many more i did not know that i am now on my 3rd listen. not because i couldn't remember but because i find it so entertaining that he reads it like he is talking straight to me. so weather you are a reader or like to listen to something while you work i recommend this book. i made this from a photo of adam while i listened the first time. 3D adam savage.mp4

    Framing fretwork

As a frame shop owner, we have a product called "Museum Glass". It look as if there is no glass at all, but very expensive.

Thanks for the comments. I'm leaning towards no glass. I think the glass makes them look more commercial and less home made. I have the tools to make frames and I do cut glass because stained glass is another hobby I have. Lately I've been going to the $ store and buying plain black frames. It's challenging to take a pattern meant for 10" or 11" and reduce them to 5" to 6". I cut for my pleasure and rarely sell anything. I gift a lot and store many pieces. I live in an age restricted housing development and I think I may begin to donate pieces to the community for the activities they have. Whittle down the pile and maybe avoid me being labeled a hoarder requiring an intervention like the tv show.

    Custom Design Pattern

If you say, design this for me, true he holds the copyright if you have a written agreement saying once created the copyright resides with you, then that is the case. That agreement can just be him agreeing to that in an email. Or something like "Design this for me, and when you finish and I pay for it, the copyright belongs to me." taking on the job is evidence of agreement

  27. In general my understanding is the designer holds the copyright to the art work. The purchaser get permission to use it but can not sell re-distribute or share with out written consent of the creator.

Well, that's one way to flip everyone the bird.. ( those metal pieces look like a hand with the middle finger sticking up, ) What a great idea.. for holding the sandpaper.. I really like that.. I might make me one.. except it'd always be flipping me the bird.. but I have several people I'd like to make them for anyway.. Maybe the younger folks will know what they are if you say the metal bird flippers... I think they have an emoji for that.. so you can text them a picture.. Okay I better get out of here... having too much fun with this one.. I bet whoever designed these did it by accident.. they was just mad at their boss..

    Compound Cutting

Hi, Rockytime, I have cut a few compound patterns in pine and just use a #5 blade. Preferably a skip tooth to help remove the sawdust but, my main go-to blades are always a #5 Ultra Reverse. The packing tape also helps a lot. I slow the blade speed slightly and feed the block very slowly. Maybe you can still try at least one pine with a smaller blade while you wait to get your basswood. God Bless! Spirithorse

  41. Just saying Ray. Your words. I think you are very special. I'm 76 years old. I live in a retirement mobile home community. I have nothing to build nor do I have any desire to build anything requiring nails. But if I did, I'd invest in a framing nail gun. I'm happy for you though. 76 does not equal 80.

I haven't learned how to cut glass. I've tried and I suck at it - so I do not use glass for my frames. I do however make all my own frames currerntly

  44. My local weekly market usually begins Memorial Weekend but this year the town decided to start it up 2 weeks early, which we all thought was a good idea. Tourists aren't heavy yet, but we figured the locals would enjoy getting out. Week 1 (May 11) was good, not great, but this past Saturday (May 18) was my worst outing at this event in the 3 years I've been doing it. There were several other events happening on the island drawing crowds (nothing arts & crafts related, just beach type stuff) and I knew it would be slow, just not THAT slow. LOL No complaints at all with Memorial weekend coming up, things will get back to normal. The manager of the event is a friend of mine and we chatted mid-way through the day Saturday and he said that nobody was doing well so he'll recommend that they go back to the old schedule next year.
