    Birch Underlayment

I buy this cheap stuff at Home Depot because it IS inexpensive compared to BB at Woodcraft. It scrolls very nicely and when I compare the surface to BB they look the same. HOWEVER, when I apply 50/50 BLO one side is very light while the other is a reddish color. I have no problem with that except that before cutting I do not know which side will be light and which side reddish as both sides are the same before applying the BLO. I'm not complaining just making an observation. The photos do not reflect the colors exactly but will give you an idea. I'll keep using it. The darker one is much more red that it appears here.

    What Did YOU Do Today?

I was babysitting one of my nephews. We did get a little shop time making some cutouts for him to decorate. Ended up with "the greatest Godzilla set of all!".

  5. The majority of this project is not scroll sawing but there is a scroll-sawn element and that element is very important. This is a gift that I am going to give to my wife, Margaret, when she is in the hospital for removal of her thyroid on June 7th. The gift is going to be a framed tile of a Whisky Jack (known to most non-Canadians as a Gray Jay) entitled ‘Who’s Watching Whom’ and I am going to feature the title. (The tiles comes from Motawi Tileworks and it is based on art by Charlie Harper). To that end, I am cutting a title out of a little bit of the Wenge that I recently purchased. The colour and texture of the wood are both a good match for the tile. The font is an Arts and Crafts font that I found an example of on the internet and that I modified slightly. I think this would look good framed with some weathered cedar from the old play structure that I took down a couple of weeks ago. I used this mock-up to help me decide: I purchased the tile from Motawi Tileworks in Michigan and the artist is Charles Harper. I tried a few different stains in order to a get a good match for the ivory colour in the tile: This colour is to be used on the lettering’s backer board. I made the frame using a variation of my “standard” Rosseter-Pellow frame. Here is a photo: I’m fairly certain that Margaret is going to be surprised and happy with this gift.

  6. You Can't Buy Happiness But You Can Buy A Truck This humorous saying has been around for a while. Why not make it for a truck friend. I cut mine from poplar and placed it on a simple slab of sapele. Free Pattern: http://baggetta.com/pebooks/puzzle_patterns.htm

  8. Likewise I fell in love with those lamps at Judy's studio and bought one. Best mag light I have found. I did search the web for that brand name and Judy has the best price. Especially if you pick one up while attending a class. Worth every penny and then some.

If you apply a little BLO to the large sheet, then label which side it is, you could then tell whenever you wanted to cut something.

    Birch Underlayment

I get that sometimes with the BB ply too.. I sorta think it's more to do with the part of the tree the wood was from.. ie Sap wood or heart wood.. or maybe it's worded the outer most part of the tree or the inner part.. whatever the case.. I don't think it's something to do really so much with one side or the other or if there is a front and back side.. .. I may be wrong about that.. I'm just sayin that.. my BB ply is this way sometimes.. BTW... Nice cutting!

  17. No complaints with East Tennessee. In fact heading up this week to the Kingsport and Knoxville area to visit the wife's relatives. But they're not half-backs. They landed there originally from the north-lands. Have had some great camping over the years.

    Wally Walleye

Walleye is a pattern by David Hunter. 3/16" luan underlayment with BLO finish, #1 Pegas MG. Frames from twisted fence slat. No way to get the corners to match but it is supposed to be rustic.

    Router jig

Because I am cursed with being a perfectionist, if I see something that doesn't hang straight, I go out at night and talk to the moon. Made a router jig for cutting a slot on the back of a hanging piece. Never got interested in saw tooth hangers, as a "tooth" was always in the wrong place. If you mount it up-side-down, there isn't much to hold your piece. Place a pencil mark on the piece where you think it should hang. (Figure "C") Figure A is the jig & B is for alignment. There is a 1/4" hole above the "B". Place the hole over the pencil mark. Remove "B". I use a 1/4" straight bit on the router. The opening in "A" is the size of the router base (top to bottom). Sid to side opening is 1 inch wider. jerry

  27. Years ago, when Home Depot was just starting to build their empire, They use to sell Sande wood in dimensional lumber form and not just plywood. It was from a different source they have now. I built my entire shop with it. All my cabinets and trim are from Sande wood. It was a very nice wood to work with and cut easily. Very stable wood. I was told it was in the mahogany family. Not sure where they get this stuff from now but it is not the same stuff for sure.

John you are correct. It is 3/16" Sande Interior underlayment. A 4X8 sheet sell for just over $24.Don't know where I saw birch. I just went out and checked a label.

  33. Saw where he posted yesterday that he has reopened his website and selling his patterns once again. Good to hear as I know there are lots of Charles Dearing fans out there who love his patterns. His site is here: https://woodenvisions.com He sells a lot of different patterns but If you have never cut any of his patterns and would like to try one before buying, he does offer several free ones on his site here: https://woodenvisions.com/index.php/product-category/free-patterns/

  34. I do not believe that is birch underlayment. Too expensive. They use to sell Luan underlayment. Not sure what that stuff is. It could be Sande wood.

  37. Was just going to say.. I think that light is the same as mine.. and they do work pretty well.. I always thought.. but I do see a difference in the lens from this style one I have from the one I got with one of my used saws.. The one that came with one of my used saws has a better lens.. NOW.. it's not so much better that I'd spend 300 to get a better one, LOL.. There was a big bg improvement when I put this LED bulb in it.. Only figured that out because I had the light too close to the upper arm on the Hawk and I snapped the blade..arm came up and broke my bulb.. Like the LED so well I bought another.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/8-inch-Circline-T9-Daylight-6000K-LED-Relamp-Fluorescent-FC8T9-Bulb/222261066257?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

  39. OK, I am attaching two pictures. This one shows the overall setup with the base for the lamp clamped to a table that is beside my saw: This one shows how the base for the lamp can simply slip into into the clamping unit: It could not be easier to set up.

    2D - 3D puzzles

I have just finished these few puzzles. The tray puzzles are cut from 6mm (1/4") mdf with a 3mm tray. I paint them with acrylic house paints and then 2 coats of clear gloss lacquer. I used an FDUR #3. I like the gaps a little wide on these as they are for small kids and I paint the edges of each piece. The standing puzzles are about 28mm thick (Just over an inch) I cut these on my DeWalt using an Olson PG #7 for the outside and an Olson PG #5 for the inside cuts. The eye are super glued into shallow holes drilled with the appropriate sized forstner bit. They are polished with 2 coats of gloss lacquer sanded between with 360g

    What Did YOU Do Today?

We get a lot of those "transplants" that retire to FL then can't stand the summer heat, lack of "seasons", etc. but don't want to go back to the real cold and real long lengthy winters so instead, they move "half-way" back to our area in East TN thus "choking our roads, causing us to be waiting an hour for a table, listening to stories of how great it was up North, etc." We call them "half-backs" around these parts because they moved "half-way" back home. Course, they also like the fact that we have no state income tax too. As far as FL personally, I like to visit, but like Kevin, I would have to be a "part-timer" I think just for the heavy winter months of which we have few any way. I have a SIL who lives in Sunny Calif with Ray. She complains about a lot of it, but she stays for the weather. She comes home to visit in July and for Christmas. Primarily to remind herself why she puts up with the other stuff in Cali. Se gets the heat and humidity of summer in July and winter in December. (Though our worst part of Winter is probably more likely late Jan./Feb. - usually the coldest time.)

    Opinions wanted

How about if you do the sign in the same wood and then the backer the same as the picture. There wouldn't be quite as much contrast that way. Or at least the sign in the same wood as the picture.

    What Did YOU Do Today?

I'm glad you said that about the Pegas blades. I am new to them and have a couple of items to do that will be in 1/8" and I can only do one at a time. May have to try my FD blades as sure don't want to mess these up as they are large.

  45. Thank God that some of you are choosing not to move to Florida. We have enough drivers that don't know where they are going choking the roads, waiting an hour for a table at your favorite restaurant, listening to stories how great it was up North etc. etc. (LOL) Down here for 46 years and wouldn't change if for the world. Been in all 50 states and yes there are areas that I really love to visit, but Florida is my home and will be for the rest of my life. Once I hit that state line coming in from our travels, life is always better even at 92 degrees and 92 % humidity.

    2D - 3D puzzles

Thanks Marg, I believe I got them from our local craft shop. I must of liked them when I saw them because I have about a 1/2 dozen packets of 50 mixed colours 15mm. I've had them for about 6 or 7 years they tend to add an expression to the animal.

  47. A friend of mine talked me into going with her to a sign making class. It did teach me one thing it solidifies the fact that I’d rather scroll a sign then paint a sign. I made the sign for my daughter she always thinks she’s right and darn it she usually is.

  48. We almost pulled the trigger on moving to Florida but we came to our senses. I like the cost of living there but I don't think I'd ever get used to the hot humid summers.

  49. My Dad's been gone ten years now (effin' cancer....), but he was a Texas history buff. The "Goliad Flag" is one of my very first forays into woodworking, two years ago, but he would've loved it. He was also an Air Force Vietnam Vet, and had some pretty strong opinions on the politics of that fiasco. He loved his coffee (black....which is why I think I may be adopted, since I have never gotten the hang of drinking coffee black), and unfortunately shared a lot of the same sense of humor that I have. Were he still around, I think he would've appreciated these.
