    Wally Walleye

Walleye is a pattern by David Hunter. 3/16" luan underlayment with BLO finish, #1 Pegas MG. Frames from twisted fence slat. No way to get the corners to match but it is supposed to be rustic.

  4. The majority of this project is not scroll sawing but there is a scroll-sawn element and that element is very important. This is a gift that I am going to give to my wife, Margaret, when she is in the hospital for removal of her thyroid on June 7th. The gift is going to be a framed tile of a Whisky Jack (known to most non-Canadians as a Gray Jay) entitled ‘Who’s Watching Whom’ and I am going to feature the title. (The tiles comes from Motawi Tileworks and it is based on art by Charlie Harper). To that end, I am cutting a title out of a little bit of the Wenge that I recently purchased. The colour and texture of the wood are both a good match for the tile. The font is an Arts and Crafts font that I found an example of on the internet and that I modified slightly. I think this would look good framed with some weathered cedar from the old play structure that I took down a couple of weeks ago. I used this mock-up to help me decide: I purchased the tile from Motawi Tileworks in Michigan and the artist is Charles Harper. I tried a few different stains in order to a get a good match for the ivory colour in the tile: This colour is to be used on the lettering’s backer board. I made the frame using a variation of my “standard” Rosseter-Pellow frame. Here is a photo: I’m fairly certain that Margaret is going to be surprised and happy with this gift.

  7. National Donut Day Table Sign Pattern Mmmmm. Mmmm. National Donut Day is the first Friday of June (coming up this Friday), so why not make one of these signs as you sip your cup of coffee (see yesterday's sign) and chomp on a nice chocolate covered donut. I cut mine from sapele wood which gives it that nice chocolate flavor then I added a carefully improvised base of same to bottom it out. Free Pattern:http://baggetta.com/pebooks/puzzle_patterns.htm

@edward I decided to try my hand at making an overlapping word art pattern with "AMAZING GRACE" "how sweet the sound" for you or anyone else who might like to try and use it. I have uploaded it in the new pattern announcements subsection found here: Please read the notes/comments I added there regarding the fact that I have not cut it myself to confirm no errors or islands. If anyone finds an issue, please let me know so I can correct.

  13. You Can't Buy Happiness But You Can Buy A Truck This humorous saying has been around for a while. Why not make it for a truck friend. I cut mine from poplar and placed it on a simple slab of sapele. Free Pattern: http://baggetta.com/pebooks/puzzle_patterns.htm

I was asked if I could make an inlay top for another braided basket. I stack cut the leaves from the top and bottom. Not advocating anything here, but MD is an RX legal state and, well I said sure.

    Router jig

Because I am cursed with being a perfectionist, if I see something that doesn't hang straight, I go out at night and talk to the moon. Made a router jig for cutting a slot on the back of a hanging piece. Never got interested in saw tooth hangers, as a "tooth" was always in the wrong place. If you mount it up-side-down, there isn't much to hold your piece. Place a pencil mark on the piece where you think it should hang. (Figure "C") Figure A is the jig & B is for alignment. There is a 1/4" hole above the "B". Place the hole over the pencil mark. Remove "B". I use a 1/4" straight bit on the router. The opening in "A" is the size of the router base (top to bottom). Sid to side opening is 1 inch wider. jerry

    Birch Underlayment

Wood is alive, well before it was cut down. It's color can change in the way is processed/milled and dried or even from minerals in the ground water. Even on solid wood I have seen color variation and rate of absorption on boards 4 less then feet in length. I find slight color variation on all sheets of Baltic Birch and I get the B/BB grade. (B/BB) will have one face that is clear of defects and the backside may have some oval patches.

    Router jig

So far, I've only used it once. The 4th photo shows it demonstrated on the narrow end of an oval. Piece "A" shows that it has a "tail" that could be used for something narrow, i.e. a cross that has more weight on one side. Time will tell. jerry

  34. Just got back from three weeks vacation. Almost had to buy a boat to get back. Went to Missouri, it rained and then rained some more. Rained in Iowa, rained In South Dakota, Rained in Montana. Finally get back home to Oregon and everything back to normal, 82 degrees no rain. Mowed the yard, planted a late garden and worked in the shop sanding ornaments. No rain. grizz

  35. I, personally could live just about anywhere. It's satisfying my life partner. After 50 years of marriage, she demands some things HER way. LOL. We are now thinking about a move to be closer to our bestest friends who moved to Norman, Ok. They visited yesterday and have got us thinking very seriously. We'd be about $1200 a month ahead in our budget over living where we are. Right now, we own our home but have to pay lot rent of $1000 a month plus utilities. And since the park has been taken over by a management company, we know that the rent is going to keep going up every year until they get all the sites up to market prices. Right now, that would be about $1325 a month. For what our home is worth, we can own a sticks and bricks house there and not have the expenses we have now. Even with the high property taxes and homeowners insurance, we'd be waaay ahead. AND, gas is more than a $1 a gallon cheaper there. And, I love their politics way more than here.

    2D - 3D puzzles

I have just finished these few puzzles. The tray puzzles are cut from 6mm (1/4") mdf with a 3mm tray. I paint them with acrylic house paints and then 2 coats of clear gloss lacquer. I used an FDUR #3. I like the gaps a little wide on these as they are for small kids and I paint the edges of each piece. The standing puzzles are about 28mm thick (Just over an inch) I cut these on my DeWalt using an Olson PG #7 for the outside and an Olson PG #5 for the inside cuts. The eye are super glued into shallow holes drilled with the appropriate sized forstner bit. They are polished with 2 coats of gloss lacquer sanded between with 360g

  40. Wood to wood I always use Titebond II , metal to wood I use a clear epoxy. Every project I do that has an overlay I use this method. Have to use real sponges and not plastic ones.

  44. My Dad's been gone ten years now (effin' cancer....), but he was a Texas history buff. The "Goliad Flag" is one of my very first forays into woodworking, two years ago, but he would've loved it. He was also an Air Force Vietnam Vet, and had some pretty strong opinions on the politics of that fiasco. He loved his coffee (black....which is why I think I may be adopted, since I have never gotten the hang of drinking coffee black), and unfortunately shared a lot of the same sense of humor that I have. Were he still around, I think he would've appreciated these.

    Cameo

If you need some practice cutting circles and arches, this might be the project for you. If you are new at scroll sawing cut along the lines as carefully as possible. It might be difficult at first, but after you have done a lot of circles and arc as in this sign pattern it will become easier. I like to work at a fast speed once I get the feel of it; seems like the lines come out a lot smoother. I cut my sign from a nicely grained poplar and tried something a bit different on the base. I used a piece of mahogany for the bottom but made a bridgework out of maple for the base of the sign to sit on. Seems to work Free pattern

  46. If my Dad were still here (he died when I was thirteen -64 years ago), I would give him this: The original design for this was by Sheila Landry and I made modifications to make the island and cabin look like Pellow's Island in Lake Pivabiska. This was Dad's favourite place on earth and he would be pleased to know that I love the island just as much, that I am taking care of it in his name, and that it will, eventually, be passed on at least two further generations.

  47. Have given up for the weekend. Things started well enough but then found that my Pegas modified geometry no 5 was shredding my pattern. It cut the wood perfectly but I noticed the paper line being torn rather than being cut. Never had this happen before when it was impossible to do the reverse side of a peninsula because the pattern was unreadable and totally unable to follow the return line. The 'shredding' was probably similar to the effect one would get by using sandpaper on the edge of a paper sheet. Changed to a Pegas no 7 skip reverse and problem solved but I got a breakthrough several minutes later in the middle of an M in the middle of a saying. Decided there was no way to save the piece as there was no way to do hidden repairs so it went into the fire pile. Started a completely different project and within 20 minutes got two breakthroughs in noticeable locations so I just thought about using bad language, then I used bad language, and tossed this second piece. So here I am, sober cause I'm going hill walking tomorrow, and nothing else to do except talk to the village. Bob

  48. I played on the New hawk today... put several hundred hours on it today .. or.. maybe that was several hundred it put on me? LOL I made two new car clock patterns per customer request.. ( no pictures yet coming to the bragging section soon though ) Then I went out and cut those and then cut two Honda clocks like the picture below ( Steve Good pattern by the way.... without the clock I should add ) that I sold out of the other day.. I also had about 15-20 clocks and a couple puzzles that needed a finish put on them so I did that too.. ( no pictures of that either.. ) Now that the weather has been a little better and I bought a new / used car so now I hope not to have to walk / push the old car which should give me more scroll sawing time .. maybe I can get something done.. so far this year it seems like everything needs repaired or replaced.. and we seem to be only getting one sunny day a week.. and with all the rain the grass in those 6 rainy days gets about 9 foot tall LOL.. I mowed wet grass most of this evening so I could find my car in the morning.. kid as almost late to school this morning because the grass grew so much I couldn't remember where the car was. ... did I mention that we been getting a lot of rain and the grass just grows and grows.. I finally got the blown head gasket replaced on my lawn tractor late last week.. runs great now.. so I ran it down to my other shop to take off the snow thrower and put the mower on.. all ready to go mow I thought.. but unfortunately I need a new belt now.. Guess maybe tomorrow while I'm in town I'll get a belt.. because mowing 2 acres of lawn with a 21" push mower up hill both directions in the rain twice a week is getting kinda old..
