So friend pays $5 for this at a yard sale, gives it to me saying, make it nice so I did. The words are his idea.

  4. I did this today as a gift for my friend of 40yrs + for her birthday. Is it ok? or should I get her a bottle of perfume Also, a question for all you more 'experienced than me' people. Do you think I should 'widen' some of the lines on the first cat? I'm not sure that it wouldn't look a little better if the lines were a little wider around the nose, mouth and cheek.. I hated doing this pattern almost as much as the pattern hated me !! This is my 4th attempt at it and I went so slowly that I'm pretty sure that most of you would raise an eyebrow in bafflement. However, it was the only way I could actually do it. It drove me mad !! Don't know why, it looked straight forward enough on paper but I just found it so difficult to cut.

  6. The majority of this project is not scroll sawing but there is a scroll-sawn element and that element is very important. This is a gift that I am going to give to my wife, Margaret, when she is in the hospital for removal of her thyroid on June 7th. The gift is going to be a framed tile of a Whisky Jack (known to most non-Canadians as a Gray Jay) entitled ‘Who’s Watching Whom’ and I am going to feature the title. (The tiles comes from Motawi Tileworks and it is based on art by Charlie Harper). To that end, I am cutting a title out of a little bit of the Wenge that I recently purchased. The colour and texture of the wood are both a good match for the tile. The font is an Arts and Crafts font that I found an example of on the internet and that I modified slightly. I think this would look good framed with some weathered cedar from the old play structure that I took down a couple of weeks ago. I used this mock-up to help me decide: I purchased the tile from Motawi Tileworks in Michigan and the artist is Charles Harper. I tried a few different stains in order to a get a good match for the ivory colour in the tile: This colour is to be used on the lettering’s backer board. I made the frame using a variation of my “standard” Rosseter-Pellow frame. Here is a photo: I’m fairly certain that Margaret is going to be surprised and happy with this gift.

  9. Okay, the piece that I had I did end up using.. been so long I forgot I looked all over the place in my wood storage area and couldn't find it.. then laying in bed last night ( instead of sleeping ) I thought about it and remembered using it on the bandsaw box I made.... .. I used it in this bandsaw box I made a few years ago,, The two strips surrounding the one in the middle is the sassafras..

    I am Back

Just a short update from a long inactive member. I was serving as a full-caregiver for my 98 yr old Mother until she passed in Oct. I then decided to downsize so bought a small house with nice shop building but moving into something less than half the size creates all kinds of problems. Finally got the move made with the help of some great friends in January. Of course nothing seems to go smoothly. I went out early one morning to get the trash out for pickup and didn't notice that we had received some ice overnight. I fell off the back porch which is about 3 steps up and had 2 fractures and a dislocated foot. It is disconcerting to look down and see your foot dangling off the end of your leg held on only by the skin. I did manage to crawl back into the house and call for help. Within 4 hrs, I was in surgery having a plate and screws putting me back together. This was followed by 5 weeks of being house bound as I was not allowed to put any weight on that leg. Talk about boring. I was going crazy, especially as my new Pegas scrollsaw came and all I could do was set and look at it. Finally convinced my caregivers to let me set it up in the kitchen attached to a shop vac so I could actually try it out and LOVE it. Last week I was pulling weeds in a flower bed and it turns out that they were poison oak so I broke out in a very itchy rash all over. After a shot, it is clearing up and hopefully my tribulations have ended for a while unless you count being under a tornado warning every night. So far we have only gotten rain. A lady is selling rain gauges made from a 5 gal. bucket. Enough of me as I am back to cutting and working on some things for a wedding. It is good to be back.

    Hi

Hi! I'm a retired IT guy who prefers sawing up bits of wood now. I use a Proxxon DSH with Aleksandr Koulibine's excellent blade clamps. I post pictures of my stuff here Looking forward to reading through this forum! Philip

    National Donut Day

National Donut Day Table Sign Pattern Mmmmm. Mmmm. National Donut Day is the first Friday of June (coming up this Friday), so why not make one of these signs as you sip your cup of coffee (see yesterday's sign) and chomp on a nice chocolate covered donut. I cut mine from sapele wood which gives it that nice chocolate flavor then I added a carefully improvised base of same to bottom it out. Free Pattern:http://baggetta.com/pebooks/puzzle_patterns.htm

    Classic Packard

I had to do another classic car, the 1941 Packard 180. It was the last pre war touring package with the 8 cylinder 180. The grills give this car an outstanding look but they are a bear to cut. Scoring with a straight edge always helps. The plaque is 19 x 12 on 1/8" BBPW on a 1/4 backer. I was going to try and cut the One Eighty and leave it attached but it was much easier to cut it on the left out piece and glue it on later. It took well over a week to get the design right and about 4 days (on and off) for the cutting.

    Wally Walleye

Walleye is a pattern by David Hunter. 3/16" luan underlayment with BLO finish, #1 Pegas MG. Frames from twisted fence slat. No way to get the corners to match but it is supposed to be rustic.

  24. While Sassafras isn't common, it is available around here. I've used it a number of times. The grain pattern is very open and pronounced, similar to oak. In fact, I substituted sassafras for red oak in a large shelf project I did once, when I ran out of the red oak. Took some trial & error to match up the stain, but once done you couldn't tell the difference, until you pick up the two sections and notice the drastic weight difference. Leaving the wood natural and not having to match it to anything else, I would suggest that you could use white oak as a substitute.

  35. I don't see it very often.. I got a couple pieces of it from my brothers mill a couple years ago.. Cuts like butter, LOL.. I'm not sure if I still have some or not.. If so I could probably mail it to you because I just don't use much wood if it's not a real common wood.. I hate retaking photos because I changed up the wood types.. That's why you see me staying with most projects being cherry.. I got a awesome deal years ago on a bunch of cherry lumber.. I'm going out to look and see if I have any... Another wood type similar ( I think ) might be Beech? Others will probably know better than I.. But I have some beech and sassafras and I thought they looked close to the same... Un-finished anyway.. LOL

  39. Here are two photos of the same project. Before and after I highlighted it with a propane torch. It is a gift to a police officer. I definitely AM NOT disgracing the American Flag according to the American flag code and, as a military veteran, hold the American flag in deepest respect. The stars, as you notice, are represented with used shell casings from the police officer's service weapon. Approximately 9 3/4" by 17" in 3/4" stock. Thanks for looking and God Bless! Spirithorse

  41. Fiona is amazing. She sees a knot in a board, and just starts scrolling, next thing you know there is a fish being pulled out a pond by an osprey. No pattern, she “sees” things differently than most of us and draws with her saw blade. Nice job on the Honey Bee!

    Opinions wanted

How about if you do the sign in the same wood and then the backer the same as the picture. There wouldn't be quite as much contrast that way. Or at least the sign in the same wood as the picture.

  50. If my Dad were still here (he died when I was thirteen -64 years ago), I would give him this: The original design for this was by Sheila Landry and I made modifications to make the island and cabin look like Pellow's Island in Lake Pivabiska. This was Dad's favourite place on earth and he would be pleased to know that I love the island just as much, that I am taking care of it in his name, and that it will, eventually, be passed on at least two further generations.
