Ornate Tiger
Charles Hand and 4 others reacted to Scrappile for a topic
Haven't finished much lately. Waiting for my hand to heal up and so many new things I am trying to work at. I did finish cutting this this evening and I really like it. This is a Charles Hand pattern caller "Tigris" pattern "orno5". Says it is approx. 215 cuts, but I really feel it is more. Took me awhile and not finished. I have to sand it and finish applied. I want to mount it on a red background as pictured, only maybe silk...pictured it is sitting on felt. This pattern was unique to me. It said it was a challenge, and it was, only for me in the time it took. But I also felt it was a good pattern for someone that was wanting to do detailed fretwork. I gave lots of practice. Many of the same cuts repeated only getting smaller and smaller with each one... A close look at it will show what I am trying to describe. Anyway, although it took me a long time to cut... I really enjoyed it and have another one of his ornate ones to do. Thanks @Charles Hand5 points -

Les, I use Aleen’s tacky glue. First, I set up the band clamp so it just snug with the frame. Then I loosen the band clamp just enough to remove one side. I apply glue to both ends of the piece then put it back in the band clamp. Then, remove the opposite frame piece and apply glue the each end. Then replace it into the band clamp, then tighten the clamp. As you are tightening the clamp, make sure everything is aligned. It should only take a few seconds to apply glue to four ends. Because I make the frame for each project, I’m not worried about making it any particular standard size. The project gets glued into the frame, so I don’t nail the frame together. The four glued corners and the project glued to the frame make it very strong. I make the frame sides wide enough to cut a screw hole slot on the router table to the upper rail. That way I don’t have to use wire and eye screws to mount the picture to the wall. Here is one I just finished up5 points

Well here's something a bit different. I've been working on and idea for building a foot lift for my Excalibur scroll saw arm. At the tap of the toe you can raise and lower the arm easily -- saving wear and tear on your arm and making it easy to lift and lower when you have a lot of cuts on a piece -- fretwork, for example. I designed this for the Excalibur, but I think it will work with any scroll saw that's arm is lifted. You can check out the build and the use in my new video on YouTube: Free pattern can be downloaded from my Free Page at my site:3 points

It is approx.. 11" across x 12" tall, I started at the top of the right side worked that half down to the nose, then did the left down to the nose and the the rest. Went through a lot of blades using a Pegas #3R Reverse Skip. I was cutting 2 1/4" BB stacked. It really ate up the blades. Lost some pieces on the bottom piece of the stack, don't think I can save it. I will try a different blade when I get around to cutting the elephant.3 points -

Coffee plaque for sister in law / Bob's pattern
Scrappile and one other reacted to koehler788 for a topic
Bob come through again to help keep me busy! My brother passed away several ago ( 4 years ). We had a get together at my sister in laws home for a neice that was in town for a couple of days about 2 weeks ago. Long story short - sister in law has an area in her kitchen perfect for a Coffee Bar. She had a little bit of extra room and my mind immediately says "MAKE HER SOMETHING FOR THIS AREA" . Of course I called on Bob for help, we came up with this - THANK YOU BOB!2 points -
Well, another batch of little boxes finished. These took a little while longer than normal as it has been bloody cold. Single digits at night and maximums in the teens during the day. A maximum of 12 one day.. The good part is I can take my time doing the flocking as the paint takes a lot longer to dry. I'd rather be grizzling about the heat any day. The larger Rose box has a Nyatoh band. The other bands are Jarrah.2 points

I use a Dubby sled. It’s sold by In-Line Industries. I bought it a a Woodworking show many years ago. It has a mitre scale on it for accurate mitre cuts, but I leave it permanently set to 45* for mitre cuts. Most importantly it has an adjustable stop to cut exact length cuts. A homemade jig can work just as well. Les, the red band clamp you show is what I use. I have two of them.2 points

Here are two photos of the same project. Before and after I highlighted it with a propane torch. It is a gift to a police officer. I definitely AM NOT disgracing the American Flag according to the American flag code and, as a military veteran, hold the American flag in deepest respect. The stars, as you notice, are represented with used shell casings from the police officer's service weapon. Approximately 9 3/4" by 17" in 3/4" stock. Thanks for looking and God Bless! They say you are never too old to learn new tricks. As I mentioned to Kevin this will all make sense when I tie 2 hobbies together which is pen turning and scrolling. This will be my summer project along with making those tierd shelves for display this year for the shows.1 point -
Delta 40-150

Thanks! I ordered both items this morning. $13.68 total. Saved $5.00 shipping by choosing same vendor on eBay (Zoro Tools). Their prices look very reasonable on all their items. I’ll let y’all know how it works. Here’s my recent project made with eastern red cedar. One tree was maybe 100 years old (the deeper red color) and the other about 40. The older one was dried leaving the whole log for several years. The other dried after cutting into lumber for about 18 months.1 point -
Yes. I think it will work on the Dewalt (haven't tried it on my Dewalt yet) and just about any other that has an arm that needs lifting. Specially helpful on the bigger saws.1 point

You just posted this as I was typing my previous response. I cant say for sure. But if all specs are same and that letter A is just dropped off last digit probably good. But I would try to find out for sure before I went ahead with it. Maybe contact Delta or the manufacturer of the capacitor. If you can’t find anything else I would try it. Google the part # see what turns up.1 point

Thanks for all the information!!! You guys have answered my questions and given me some valuable information. We have a couple of Grainger locations nearby, within an hour anyway.1 point -
Got it done. I did use Aileen's Tacky glue. I am out of Tite Bond II and Tite Bond III does not dry clear. The HF clamps worked. I did put a couple of staples on the corners on back as I am not nailing a back, I'm inserting a photo and glass. I discovered I already had a Pilot strap clamp. I like the ratchet much better as it is smaller. The HF ratchet is quite large and clumsy. However, I like the HF corners better. I have so much stuff I forget what I have. I bought the Pilot strap clamp several years ago when I was repairing wood clock cases.1 point

Wood to wood I use Titebond II for all. If making a frame. I dry fit everything and then lay the clamp out just as if it were to go around the frame and glue the frame together and clamp. Takes a couple minutes1 point -

Beautiful piece! Certainly looks like more than 215 cuts to me. And using Pegas #3R Reverse Skip blades. That's a lot of turning. Did you do some breath holding when removing your pattern?1 point -

I had to look it up too, to see what our equivalent was. White spirit (UK) or mineral spirits (US, Canada), also known as mineral turpentine (AU/NZ), White spirits in Oz is a dry cleaning fluid.1 point

FDUR vs Pegas blades
OCtoolguy reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
I am a die hard FD-UR user. I tried the Pegas Modified Geometric and found that they were very aggressive and had issues with tight turns. I am sure it is just getting used to. I also like the finish I get with the UR as I never have to sand the inside cuts. The Pegas was rougher. I get my FD from Mikes. Being in Canada you would think it would be cheaper to order from Bear Woods but the shipping is higher and I have to pay tax. Last time I ordered (gross) the cost from Mikes was $4 CDN per dozen including shipping and conversion. From Bear woods the cost is over $6.50 per dozen Needless to say the cheapy in me rules. I am a big believer that it is the bladed that you get used to is your best blade. At our club most guys use Olsen as one member buys in bulk and resells them.1 point
