    Flying Fortress

I thought I needed to add the B-17 Flying Fortress to my collection of Aircraft. My design was the typical pixel gobbling exercise. I tried to leave some shadow elements in the pattern. I did go smaller on this project since I am running out of wall space. It's 9 x 14 1/8 BBPW on a 1/4" backer shellac/lacquer finish.

  6. I asked for a pattern a few weeks ago. A "brother" from a motorcycle forum that I have been a part of for close to 15 years passed away a few weeks ago. We have several get together's throughout the year. People come from all over the U.S. Our big one is next week. I wanted to make something and present it to his wife at the reunion. Mahendra made me a very nice pattern that I attempted to cut twice. Neither came out very good. I tried again tonight and I think this one is ok. I will place it onto a darker backer board and make the backer big enough for everyone at the reunion to sign it before giving it to his wife. I ended up using a flat blade after failing using a spiral. So I cut the pattern out on a smaller piece of plywood and glued it onto a bigger piece so that I didn't have such a huge piece to keep turning. I didn't like that you could see the edge of the smaller piece on the bigger piece so I trimmed it out. I'm not loving it but it looks better than seeing the edge of the smaller piece. We will all sign within the trimmed out area. Spiral blades on bigger pieces would definitely be easier,,,, once I can get the hang of using them! Thanks again Mahendra!

    Still learning

A while back, when I first started (attempted) Intarsia, I wanted to learn all "how to." Watched Youtube vids, bought and studied the books, and practiced a bunch. It would be great to take a class from one of the experts, but it is not a possibility for me. The biggest challenge was sanding and contouring. I found Judy Gail Roberts has a DVD on contouring Intarsia. As I was ordering it, I saw another DVD she has on Scroll Sawing for Accuracy. I don't spend cash easily (I have a hard time throwing out used bladed). I ordered that one too, and I am glad I did. I have been scrolling for 6-8 years and learned a lot. I highly recommend it to newbee's. If you are thinking of trying Intarsia get both! Have I arrived, not even close, but these two have made me better.

  12. Bob come through again to help keep me busy! My brother passed away several ago ( 4 years ). We had a get together at my sister in laws home for a neice that was in town for a couple of days about 2 weeks ago. Long story short - sister in law has an area in her kitchen perfect for a Coffee Bar. She had a little bit of extra room and my mind immediately says "MAKE HER SOMETHING FOR THIS AREA" . Of course I called on Bob for help, we came up with this - THANK YOU BOB!

    More little boxes.

Well, another batch of little boxes finished. These took a little while longer than normal as it has been bloody cold. Single digits at night and maximums in the teens during the day. A maximum of 12 one day.. The good part is I can take my time doing the flocking as the paint takes a lot longer to dry. I'd rather be grizzling about the heat any day. The larger Rose box has a Nyatoh band. The other bands are Jarrah.

  14. I found this Gary MacKay pattern in an old SSWC magazine and decided to get my feet wet in intarsia. I have only applied one coat of Watco's natural. I can't decide if I want to shoot it with clear lacquer. Also, it sure would be nice to get hold of some wood that has color/grain that matches. I don't know how the writer did it. Oh well....... I still have to get some black felt to line the drawers and top compartment with.

  15. Gene Autry Round Up Guitar Table Sign Pattern If you're an old timer like me you will remember the name Gene Autry -- the western hero for many of us kids at the time. I was inspired by his playing of the guitar to take up the instrument and a couple of month ago I found one of his old Round Up guitars which were sold by Montgomery Ward (another old name from the past). So I decided to come up with this nice little sign. I cut it from spalted maple and the top layer of the base is also splated maple with a lot of chips in it, so I decided to stress the whole base. The only tricky part is cutting out the name letters without botching them up. The free pattern above is available for download on my FREE PATTERNS:

The shellac is a sealer coat that also lifts any fibers even after previous sanding. I give it a very light sanding to clear those fibers away and allows for a smoother finish with the lacquer. Both lacquer and shellac dry very fast too.

    More little boxes.

Thank you all for kind comments. I was taught during my apprenticeship, that everything you do is in effect a base for the finish. So the final finish depends upon how well the piece is made and readied for finishing. The polishers would apply the finish, but it was the cabinet maker that had to make it ready as there was noway in hell a Polisher would touch a piece of sandpaper until the first coat ;). They used to say they could put a magnificent finish on a telegraph pole but it would still just be a shiny Telegraph pole, it was up the cabinetmaker to make the pole into something worthy. We used to think they were lazy buggers :), I remember having to go into the polishing shop to get some dings out of a pile of doors that had been dropped. Al it took was some steam and a bit of sanding, but according to the Polishers, it was not their job.

  19. When I made these last year I painted the backboard flat black and flat blue. The maple overlay was glued with clear epoxy. Then entire thing was sprayed with satin deft lacquer. Do need to make a couple more of the black ones. They were the better seller. That backboard piece was 3/8" thick. BB

  20. I spray all my backers with black lacquer. I glue on the plywood with Weldbond. It holds awesome. Then I spray over the whole thing with clear Lacquer. I use a Titan Flexspray and have several cupheads for all the colors I use. I clean mine about once every three months. I don't recess my clocks. i

  21. I use a lot of 1/2" Baltic birch for backer and stain it Jacobean. This clock is 14" x 14" so I would not be able to use a solid backer. I never get any negative comments about the edges. I also paint them black at times. I stack cut the front five at a time and cut the backers individually.

    Hello

I live in the foothills of North Georgia Blue Ridge mountains. I have enjoyed working with wood since I was a teenager. Now that I am nearing retirement, I hope to spend more time in the shop. I cut my own wood and mill it on a Logosol chainsaw mill. I have cedar, oak, maple, cherry, pine, sweet gum and a couple of black walnut trees growing on my property. It’s old growth for the most part. I have enough trees to last me the rest of my days and still leave some for the kids and grandkids to enjoy. My scroll saw is a Delta 40-150 15”. I bought/bartered for it several years ago. It has been a great little tool. I’m having an electrical issue with it right now so I hope this forum can help me solve the problem. Looking forward to hearing from everyone.

You really do a top notch job on these airplane and car pictures.... That is awesome. One of my favorite uncles was a belly gunner during WWII in one of the like bombers. He didn't see any action, he spent his time patrolling the coast line of South America. He gave me and my brothers his leather helmet and googles when he got out. We had that for years, played all sorts of things with it from card board box warplanes we built, to hooking it into a surplus army helmet we had so it could be out race car helmet... Sure wish I had that leather helmet still. I don't know where it ended up.

  32. Portraits of celebrities & athletes have their likeness protected. They're basically a business themselves. Marilyn Monroe is a great example. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is another. If nothing else, the photo the pattern is based on is copyrighted by the photographer. As craftsmen, we don't have a right to their likeness. Now it is a tossup as to whether you'll get in trouble or not. There are agencies that just scour for stuff like this. They make their money on settlements (rarely going to court), and they split it with the rights owner. It's also important for the rights owner to police their IP, otherwise it can slip into the public domain and lose their copyright or trademark. I think for the vast majority of portraits, it's unlikely that they'll say anything. But there are a few that we try to avoid on SSV. Dale Earnhardt Jr by his car or in his jumpsuit is asking for trouble. Licensed characters from movies or comics, album art, or even certain music personalities might be a problem. Sports teams are notoriously bad. That is why SSV has our copyright policies as we do. I don't think I'd be held liable for something someone else posts on the forum, but they can certainly make my life miserable. Remember, you don't need to win a court case...you just need to run your opponent out of money and the will to fight. But you're right, you can't mention Tim McGraw if you have a portrait for sale, which also means nobody going to find your product. There's a pretty well known portrait designer, who does amazingly beautiful work of celebrities and licensed characters. You'll also notice how the order sheet isn't a normal text document or on website...instead it is an image with a thumbnail photo of the pattern code next to it. The reason for this is webcrawler bots can't read them, and unlikely to be seen by the agencies trolling for violations. Luckily for him, he's well known and makes most of his sales through private channels. He's what you mean when you say "I know a guy."

  45. I agree Brad.. I've used a wide variety of blades and also started out using Olsen blades.. I do like to be versatile with blades and I still use some Olsen blades and FD blades.. but I gotta say.. I always gravitate back to those Pegas MG blades.. I've tried many different styles configurations and most all the sizes of most every brand blade out there and I have favorites in most all those brands.. The best blades I use and get the best results from For Me.. is the faster more aggressive cutting blades... I tend to mess up more pieces from a slower cutting blade because I tend to get impatient and start pushing too much which in turn makes the blade flex and give me a poor cut.. Good to see you posting, Hope all is going as good as it can be for you.

  46. I am a die hard FD-UR user. I tried the Pegas Modified Geometric and found that they were very aggressive and had issues with tight turns. I am sure it is just getting used to. I also like the finish I get with the UR as I never have to sand the inside cuts. The Pegas was rougher. I get my FD from Mikes. Being in Canada you would think it would be cheaper to order from Bear Woods but the shipping is higher and I have to pay tax. Last time I ordered (gross) the cost from Mikes was $4 CDN per dozen including shipping and conversion. From Bear woods the cost is over $6.50 per dozen Needless to say the cheapy in me rules. I am a big believer that it is the bladed that you get used to is your best blade. At our club most guys use Olsen as one member buys in bulk and resells them.

Huh...yah, when I click the Mark Site Read, it will refresh the status of the posts (making them unbolded and removing the bullet), but won't remove the posts. If you refresh, they disappear. I guess it's nice to be able to click into a thread after clicking the button. Maybe on the next update, it'll revert to how it used to be. When I click the bullet, I still go to the first unread post. So that seems to work for me. It seems a bit laggy, though. But that could be my connection.

In the unread listing I click the bullet or star next to the thread tile, go to first unread post. Before the upgrade that worked fine, almost immediate screen display. After the upgrade I get a "waiting on ..." until I give up and just click the thread title, then it comes in immediately I kind of feel this is connected to the my previous comment about the mark as read not refreshing the listing

I use the unread content page mostly, in the past when you clicked mark site read, the screen would refresh with no threads listed tried that today (just got back from vacation) and the page does not refresh like it did, but if I revisit the unread content page, it does show that those threads were marked as read
