    New Tissue box designs.

Some tissue boxes I finished. The rose is Tasmanian Oak with Jarrah trim, I Sold this one at Sunday's Markets and have orders for another 2. The others are Pine and Jarrah. I don't think I have posted these designs before.

    A Bat Box

Tried something totally new this week. A little 'tray' for sweets. It's in the shape of a Bat because it looked simple enough to cut. Not sure I'd do another one, lots of sanding and then painting, which is far from being my best attribute. He's 11" wide, 8" head to tail and 2" deep. Cut on a bandsaw.

    Smile Grin Chuckle

Smile Grin Chuckle Table Sign Pattern This philosophical table ornament reminds us that we should keep a lighter attitude to most things in our lives. Some of my customers have asked why I add certain features to a sign they have requested. Usually it is for support. For example, in this sign I wanted SMILE and GRIN to float in the air, but this just can't be in a wood display without some support. So I added the moons or smiles to offer support for the words floating in the air, and the little elf to support the upper deck. I cut my sign from cherry wood and made a three tone base from scraps I had around. Download free pattern from here:

Where do you get the billiard balls.? Also the bases you made really do a lot to make them pop.

    Compound Cutting

I have over 2 dozen compound cutting patterns that I use to raise funds. I use 2x2 (actually 1 1/2 X 1 1/2") SELECT PINE from Home Depot . My best blade is a Flying Dutchman #5 R. John Old Dust BTW I use the scraps. I cut them as flat as I can and give them to a Pre School facility for the kids to color. Compound Cutting

I too use the FD Polar for all my compound cutting. #5 should be big enough for what you are doing. I've not had good results with pine when compound cutting. I would stick with the poplar or basswood.

    Compound Cutting

Les, I have cut several compound cut projects lately, all in 1 1/2” Mahogany. The blades that worked for me were Flying Dutchman Polar #7 and Flying Dutchman UR #7. Both worked equally well. I saw on a DeWALT at a relatively fast speed. Even on the DeWALT, it’s slow cutting.

    Compound Cutting

Pegas #5 skip tooth will work, or a Pegas MG#5. Pine, in my opinion, is not suited for compound cutting. It seems to grab the blade and wander. I really like using poplar, butternut, and walnut for compound cutting. A slow feed is key.

    Compound Cutting

My best advice... Use a different saw On a more serious note.. Hawk scroll saws are slower less aggressive cutting machines.. Any time I'm cutting anything 3/4" + thick stock.. I go to the Excalibur or DeWalt.. this is about the only time those saws really shine better for me, LOL Sorry I don't have any advice on blades.. I rarely cut anything more than 5/8 and if I do.. as I said above.. I use one of those other saws, LOL

  14. Three Headed Dinosaur Puzzle Pattern Why a three headed dinosaur? Well, everybody knows that three heads are better than one. Ok, it's just interesting. Might make a fun puzzle for children, especially if you make up a story to go along with it. Bonus pattern also included in this PDF. Download from my Free Page:

I was finally able to finish this last night. I did this in solid 3/4" Walnut, with semi poly finish and I really like the way it came out. I think I might try it in Oak and Walnut together. This is a free pattern from Scrollbench.com Thanks for looking

  19. I have always loved going to stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army where I got into the habit of buying old wooden plates. When designs are cut in them they hang flat on the wall and make great Plaques. They were easy to cut because of the raised edge you can hold onto.

  24. By the way, not all my work is done on the scroll saw! My Business Card shows a Williams, Oregon address but was originally made in Talent, Oregon 1985. The Dragon (on the card) was one of the first items I cut with my new Excalibur EX-19VS Scroll Saw using 1 inch Oak. Gene's Woodcraft Workshop Business Card.bmp

  25. Those are nice patterns but I did not get my idea from them, although years ago I did get patterns from them. Sometimes I enjoy making my own patterns. In the pictures below I am setting on the Running Board of my old 1930 AA 1974. The pattern and cut out I did December of last year.

    SSV - Software Upgrade

Yah...I heard it was down for a short time yesterday. There was some server upgrades that happened in the background. I think there was a bit of lag as it switched DNS severs, which made it unavailable for a bit. I'm hoping things are working a bit better. Page refreshes seem to work OK, it's more the dynamic stuff that seem to be lagging a bit. I'm not sure if it's the server, or if it's the software update I made a bit ago. I'll check with the company that makes the software to see if they have any insight.

Top job on that sign. Somehow I don't see an Irish Pub in a place called "Ferntree Gully". I love the names of some of the Aussie towns...

    Retired?

Retired: Not My Problem Table Sign Pattern I had a job once, I think....Many years ago in a galaxy far far away. I've been retired for about 15 years and loving every minute of it. When you think back on it, it's funny how many problems you were involved in or had to solve over the years. Now I can do pretty much whatever I want. Don't be afraid of retirement. This sign says it all. I cut mine from cherry and mounted it on an improvised top layer of cherry from the off cut. I sat the whole thing on a thin slab of sapele to finish it off. Clock Insert Holes

Unless you are making a whack of clocks there are much cheaper (i.e. way more cost efficient) alternatives to Forstner bits - none of the clocks I have ever made is a production item - meaning I use hole saws very comfortably - and if I'm only making one clock I will likely use the scroll saw. Clock Insert Holes

Yeah, good ones sure aren't cheap.. I bought a complete set several years ago when my bit I had used for a long time was getting dull. But the new bit in that cheap set was duller then the old one that I thought was getting dull, LOL... Don't waste the money on set's is something I was told when I first started making clocks.. just buy the sizes you need and in a quality brand.. I mainly only use 3 different sizes..

    Not sure.

When I used to click on Mark Forum As Read another box would pop up to ask if I was sure now it only pops up every now and again. Plus the site seems to be slower than normal. Not my computer because this is the only site that is slow. Marg
