    My first human

When I first heard of Scrolling almost a year ago, I never dreamt of the fun I would have. I've done Elephants, Cats even a Giraffe but I've never attempted a human before. It's straight off the saw, no finish on it yet but overall I'm pretty pleased with it.

  2. Hey Gang, long time no post. I hope everyone is doing well. 4 or 5 weeks into my season and I've decided I'm going to bring back the kids puzzles into my inventory for events. I'm getting more potential customers that mention they're interested in one of my puzzles for younger children and being the honest, good hearted person that I am, I talk them out of it since my signature puzzles are somewhat delicate in nature and aren't meant for "tiny hands" as I put it. In the past I pointed them over to a series of dinosaur and other simplistic puzzles made of pine that I used to make and display. But I chose to do away with them last year and it was working out OK, but this year seems to be costing me more than I anticipated. Plus I'm hearing more often "Oh I love your work, I have 2 at home already!" Not that I'm completely saturated here considering the tens of thousands of tourists each summer, but I definitely have a number of local households that already have a puzzle or two on the shelves. Also, I'm going to make one of these non-puzzle dogs as a wall mounted key/leash holder and take it to my next major event and get some feedback on it to see if it's something I should broaden myself into. 5. Gorilla With An Ice Cream Cone Puzzle Pattern Some children might find this amusing. Yes, it's a gorilla holding an ice cream cone. One can probably assume it didn't last very long. Great gift for a young child especially if you make up a story to go along with it. I cut mine from MDF. It would probably look better if painted, but I offer it as is. Perhaps a nice wood could dress it up a bit. Free Pattern:

Just finished this one .It is from a pattern by Sam Custodio. The actual bike is 12" x 8" & I used No1 Penguin Silver Reverse Blades & a 3/0 Spiral in a couple of places .I really like the way this one turned out & it is sold already ,Glad I stack cut 2 of them.

    Alex Fox With a Twist

I decided to make one of Alex Fox’s baskets with a Kokopelli inlay. The basket itself is Baltic Birch, the inlay is from a scrap piece of lacewood. I think it really makes this basket more interesting.

    A Bat Box

Tried something totally new this week. A little 'tray' for sweets. It's in the shape of a Bat because it looked simple enough to cut. Not sure I'd do another one, lots of sanding and then painting, which is far from being my best attribute. He's 11" wide, 8" head to tail and 2" deep. Cut on a bandsaw.

That looks brilliant. I wish I was good enough or brave enough to try spirals again, but alas, I'd not make something as good as this.

  13. I just ordered/received a new black toner cartridge. I'm almost half way through the one that came with my printer. I just hate the idea of running out of toner. I'll probably never have to buy the other colors. I never use them. Well, once in a while. Anyway, I bought a black one for under $30 and it will last me forever. I can't believe how much money I wasted on inkjet printers and ink over the years. If I had bought a laser printer back when they were over a $1000 I'd still be ahead.

  14. I was worried about the cost but it was well worth it especially for this hobby. You know how it is with working with patterns and such. Nice to be able to just print out one and if you do not like something about it, print it again and again. Dont even need to worry about it. Also the ink does not dry out like an inkjet. I have had that happen, almost new printer but never used it and when I finally did the ink had dried up.

  15. EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since I won't be doing any Cary, NC shows I have a tip for you: COLOR sells!!!!!!!!!!! Take a look at my website - www.pickenspuzzles.com - My #1 seller is the snail puzzle with numbers! Colored dinos sell well also. bb

  16. The leash idea will probably take off pretty well.. They was a hot seller for me for a few years way back when I first started.. but I never found the source for all the breeds of dogs like you have found with Harveys patterns.. I only stopped making them because I lost my patterns in a hard drive crash.. and I had moved onto clocks which was doing really well..

  17. Hi Iggy, I was wondering where you were hiding out, glad to see that the puzzles are still selling, but I agree do some for the younger crowd. It’s funny I had a wallpaper business before I retired and people would not care what it cost for their child’s room, but when it came to their room they bought the cheapest they can get even if they didn’t like it, good luck going forward, RJ

  18. The simple dinosaur puzzles are what I started with for my grand-daughter and I also made and gave away dozens of them and then I came across Harvey's artwork and fell in love with his puzzles. I kept making the simple puzzles as well for 2 years but stopped last year mostly due to time constraints. I'm still squeezed on time, but I feel I really need to have them at events.

    SSW CD 49 -72

I quit my subscription several years ago.. they use to have some great stories and projects but over the years the stories started fading away and more and more advertisements came.. the patterns are typically scatterbrained from mostly one category and most wasn't all that useful to me.. What really is a shame is the fact that the other magazine went out of business.. but they sure kept the stories and a wide variety of patterns that most everyone would enjoy almost in every issue.. Guess they should have put more paid ads up and they might still be around selling a crappy magazine like the other did, LOL.. sorry.. hope I'm not offending those that love the magazine.. but they really did go down hill IMO.. The other one kept their dignity right to the end and run themselves out of business I guess.. Either case is a sad situation.. Maybe they've upped their game to a better magazine these days? Before i subscribe.. I'd look at the store for a few months worth of issues to see if there is improvement.

I agree Paul. If you are a paid subscriber, you should be able to get any of the patterns as an digital download. I inquired about it once and was told that they were not able to do that. BUT...they will SELL you the CD's? Bad business. I will still subscribe though.

    RBI good deal or not

That Hawk in the craigslist link is probably not a great deal considering the age and being single speed... My personal opinion on a NEW saw money not a problem.. I'd try out a Hegner.. if I was rich and didn't care if if I lost some money on it if I didn't like it.. and had to sell it... My second choice on a NEW saw would be a Pegas brand.. then my third would be Excalibur then a DeWalt.. I don't have experience with Hegner.. The Pegas and Excalibur are about the same saw really.. All that said though.. honestly I'd scope out a good used saw.. Ray mentioned many quality brands etc.. If you find something and want an opinion.. ask here.. many folks here willing to give their opinions..

  28. I have always loved going to stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army where I got into the habit of buying old wooden plates. When designs are cut in them they hang flat on the wall and make great Plaques. They were easy to cut because of the raised edge you can hold onto.

  30. OK, yep, I definitely miss making these kids puzzles. Taking my time, I just laid out 14 on a six foot board and cut them, all in under 90 minutes. 10 per hour basically. I could spend a casual Saturday or Sunday and make 50 of them and keep a stockpile without any trouble.

  37. Kevin I have a couple different versions in my head. I had seen a similar pattern that I may combine both patterns and add some things. Just not sure yet. As I said I need to work out a few details yet with my method. Right now I am waiting on some supplies for my puzzle project and will be working on that.

I was asked if I could make up something for an upcoming memorial event for a friend that has passed. It is a shotgun shooting event, as can be seen by what he is holding in the picture. There are several classes and an overall event champion. Several months back I tried my hand at fret work and made a few small 4x6 pieces as a little something extra for the winners of a small winter event. They were full of mistakes and were so bad I almost threw them out, however the recipients loved them. I made them last second the night before so there was no time for do overs. The person who is running this upcoming event liked them so much they asked if I could make something for them. So that is how and why I made these. This is now my third time doing this type of cutting. The pieces are about 8x10 BB. The frames are made from cheap firing strips so they are kinda crappy, but they were cheap. They are assembled with glue and biscuits. I used shellac as a finish but am having issues getting it to dry. No idea how I could mess that up, but I somehow did. I have a fan on them now and will leave it for another day and hope for the best. I stack cut 3 and 4 at a time. I really struggled with the letters, especially the smaller ones in the arm. I found it extremely difficult to see the blade and where it was pointing with the black pattern I made. Cutting the person was pretty easy going. I also had issues with the top and bottom board chipping. The biggest issue was I messed up the bottom board in the stack due to the blade bending. I cranked up the tension and lowered the speed and things went allot better. I think they turned out OK, wish they were better. The letters look more like a 2 year old trying to color inside the lines. Actually the 2 year old might do a better job, lol.

  41. Here's a slightly different take on this approach--a pneumatic lift. Ray at Seyco says he's going to try an electric (screw drive) actuator. That's a great option for someone that has no air system, but it's probably slower than the pneumatic type. This one runs at 25 PSI. Click for U-Toob vid Cheers, Geno
