    Monkey Business

Jim Ern found this pattern in a magazine. This was an experiment. Wood is1X6 pine board. Since cutting pine can be problematic because of the grain I used this project to experiment with quite a few blades. The clear winner for me is the Pegas #7 Super Skip blade. It rips and cross cuts equally well and does not hang up because it does not discharge the sawdust quick enough. This was the first time using the blade.

    Groot

This is my first posting. I made this for my four year old grandson. I found a photo of Groot using Google and cut it from the photo. The wood is Zebrawood and it is about 11 inches tall without the stand.

    For Medicinal Use Only!

Though not really my thing, I have been getting requests for “medicine” boxes. I am amazed at how many folks in MD have gotten RXs for legal weed. Whatever floats your boat. Anyway, I made two more boxes yesterday. The one with the leaf is made with a Purple Heart top backed with African Rosewood, Sapele sides and Purple Heart base. The other one is taken from a Mr. Zig Zag tattoo. (Zig Zag rolling papers were popular in the 60s and 70s). The top is Zebrawood, backed with Purple Heart stained black, Sapele sides and Zebrawood base. I had originally planned to back the top in oiled Purple Heart, but it just looked muddled, thus the black stain.

  6. This is a simle topo map of some property my husband and I have. I got the inspiration from a post I saw in Pinterest. I didn't save it and I can't remember where I got it. I got the map from Mytopo.com. Fun quick project

  7. Finally finished the first of a couple rocking horses I've got lined up. I did use my scroll saw to cut the first of each part, then rough cut all the others. After the rough cuts, I used the trim router to get the pieces to match. The horse is pine, with painted mane, tail, spots, saddle, and hooves. The rocker base is red oak.

    BFF

Dracula and Frankenstein Friends Forever (and forever). I wanted to include a symbol for each, so I used the bat for Mr. D and a bolt of lightning for Mr. F. These two guys will go on forever, I'm sure. I made a special cutout top layer for the base and glued it down on a slab of pine. The rest of the project is cut from an unusually grained piece of poplar. Makes an interesting conversation piece. Download from the Free Pattern page.

    Swedish Butter Knife

A friend had shown some of these on fakebook. I decided- well a piece of pallet wood lying in my shop; decided that it wanted to be one. So I did a few image searches and then drew something on the wood. Well the scrollsaw and the belt sander both worked hard on the shaping and the ROS did the finishing touches. The size is about 11 inches long the handle is 5/8 wide while the blade part is 3/8 with a double taper. The blade depth is 2-3/8 inches. I am sorry, but, I do not know the wood species. It was quite hard. Identity will be appreciated too.

A very nicely made puzzle. Should be fun-- we have elections coming next year and I think you got a head start on the prime candidates there!

  16. Well here is a couple pictures I just did real quick.. About nearly 100 F up in my loft where i do my pictures .. LOL.. I took more pictures of other project clocks that I'll be posting in a few in the Bragging section.. Anyway.. the Eagle clock backer is made from Walnut plywood.. the Bear clock backer is just BB ply with the walnut stain I mentioned using in my earlier post.. I kinda like the look of either one.. I only did one coat of stain and maybe will try two next time.. even though I think just the one coat looks pretty good myself..not sure how much darker the two coats would be.. I showed an actual Walnut backer side by side with a stained one on the same cutting to my family and they said they'd have never really known if I hadn't told them.. Being I work with wood I surely can tell but I wouldn't say its horrible.. Especially when you figure a sheet of the Walnut ply is just shy of $80 a 4 x 8 sheet.. and the BB ply is $12..

  17. I am not a fan of spiral blades. They seem to chew up the wood and generally make a mess. Maybe i just dont know how to use them. Last night I had a dream that I made a piece using them just to try them out. Sure enough, just frayed pieces and chewed up stuff everywhere. They odd part was that people loved it!! I guess like the ripped jeans thing is popular,. i dont know but people could not get enough of the work i did with the spirals and I could hardly keep up with demand. One strange dream for sure, lol.

    My first human

When I first heard of Scrolling almost a year ago, I never dreamt of the fun I would have. I've done Elephants, Cats even a Giraffe but I've never attempted a human before. It's straight off the saw, no finish on it yet but overall I'm pretty pleased with it.

  19. I made two alterations when implementing a multi-layered Dragonfly. (1) I painted the top layer black (2) I made the back layer out of sky-blue stained glass Here is a photo of it hanging in a window in our kitchen: The next photo, although somewhat faded, gives an idea of the context in which this is hanging. It is in one top corner and in the other is a stained glass dragonfly that I made a few years ago: We like dragonflies!

    Another batch of Puzzles

I have just built a Light "Soft" box to photograph my items. Still experimenting with it. I think I need some more powerful bulbs, but so far I am pleased. I made it quite large so that (Hopefully) the largest portraits will fit. The Snail and Dinosaur are hand painted, The Blinky Bill ones are from a calendar my daughter had, I think it must be about 25 years old. The stand up puzzles are cut from 27mm pine.

  22. The sides of each box are made up of three 1/2” rings, each one comprised of 60 “pegs” scrolled on the inside and outside, i.e. 120 cuts on each ring. The wood was Sapele, sometimes called African Mahogany. I have started on two more boxes so you can see one of the rings. The newer ones are cherry, and I stack cut two at a time.

  23. I don’t have a dog in that fight. I am enjoying doing the scrolling. I am working on two more boxes on a request that’s theme is based on an x-ray of a dead guy’s hand. Have cash, will scroll.

    Monkey Business

Those turned out great.. I think I've seen that design before.. I've monkeyed around with blades like that many times.. mostly just to remind myself that Pegas blades are still better, LOL.. Nice thing about a Hawk and having a boat load of clamps.. I keep several blades clamped up all the time.. when something seems like it's really hard.. I will switch through the blades to see of another works better.. I stamped the bottom of the holder with the number size blade in that clamp..and can tell what blade it is by looking at the teeth..

    Wall Clock Backers?

It would have a better comparison to have done two of the same cut. Hard to tell other than the color. I can certainly see the grain on the plywood in the lower one but not in the upper. The color appears the same.

  35. Whenever I need to stir large volumes of product weather it be spackle if doing drywall or gallons of paint and even quarts of finish. They sell paint stirrers that you place in a drill and have at it. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Warner-5-gal-Heavy-Duty-Power-Driven-Paint-Mixer-30388/205052759?cm_mmc=Shopping|B|Base|D24|Multi|NA|PLA|All_Paint|71700000034373191

  44. OK let me get this straight. Bake for 3 hours in a 250 degree oven. Do you brush on a sauce before you put it in or during baking? and what side of wood do you serve on the side? Have a recommendation of a wine that would go with this? RJF

    Owl

This is a pattern by Sayit. It's found in the pattern section. 2 up 3/16" Luan plywood. #2/0 Pegas MG. Pattern and frame finished with 50/50 BLO, Frame cut fron cedar fence stake. If there appears to be a staple showing at the lower right side of the frame, I'm denying it!

  46. I asked for a pattern a few weeks ago. A "brother" from a motorcycle forum that I have been a part of for close to 15 years passed away a few weeks ago. We have several get together's throughout the year. People come from all over the U.S. Our big one is next week. I wanted to make something and present it to his wife at the reunion. Mahendra made me a very nice pattern that I attempted to cut twice. Neither came out very good. I tried again tonight and I think this one is ok. I will place it onto a darker backer board and make the backer big enough for everyone at the reunion to sign it before giving it to his wife. I ended up using a flat blade after failing using a spiral. So I cut the pattern out on a smaller piece of plywood and glued it onto a bigger piece so that I didn't have such a huge piece to keep turning. I didn't like that you could see the edge of the smaller piece on the bigger piece so I trimmed it out. I'm not loving it but it looks better than seeing the edge of the smaller piece. We will all sign within the trimmed out area. Spiral blades on bigger pieces would definitely be easier,,,, once I can get the hang of using them! Thanks again Mahendra!

  47. Spirals are sent straight from Satan's workshop and the only time I touch one is doing portrait style cuttings and curse myself the entire time.

  48. I prefer flat blades but I cut with either.. I wanted to see if I could cut an entire clock using spiral blades... This is the clock I made entirely with spiral blades.. it was tough but I did it.. I found that spiral blades are better suited for plywood.. Solid wood they like to follow the soft areas and if you're not careful they will through you off coarse quickly.. LOL.. Clock turned out okay really but I could have done better with flat blades..

    Wall Clock Backers?

When I made these last year I painted the backboard flat black and flat blue. The maple overlay was glued with clear epoxy. Then entire thing was sprayed with satin deft lacquer. Do need to make a couple more of the black ones. They were the better seller. That backboard piece was 3/8" thick. BB

    Wall Clock Backers?

I use a lot of 1/2" Baltic birch for backer and stain it Jacobean. This clock is 14" x 14" so I would not be able to use a solid backer. I never get any negative comments about the edges. I also paint them black at times. I stack cut the front five at a time and cut the backers individually.
