  1. I have cut this Shela Landry pattern before but this time I chose a different finishing method. Cut in cherry, the blank is .4" in thickness and approximately 14" x 9". After cutting and sanding the cherry it was soaked in Danish oil, wiped down and allowed to dry thoroughly. This was followed by 4 coats of Watco wipe-on gloss poly. Despite my best efforts there were dust nibs galore. I wet-sanded it using 2000 grade sand paper on a sanding block to level the finish and remove the dust nibs. This was made difficult because the poly tends to develop a slight ridge at each cut of the letters. That caused highly visible shiny spots amidst the satin rubbed finish. This necessitated lengthy and delicate hand sanding of each bright spot. (Next time I will use the Satin wipe-on). After all of the sanding was done, I applied a single coat of Briwax to increase the luster. The complete look is difficult to capture with the camera but it has no visible flaws and rivals a spray-booth lacquer finish. I have just ordered more of this ultra fine sand paper up to 3000 grit.

    No more dust mask

I took some time off from the scroll saw after I reached a point where I thought I was figuring it out.. Had to put both dogs down, changed jobs, blah blah etc. The last time I cut something I remember getting a view of the fine mist of sawdust when I had the garage door open, caught the sun just right. I absolutely hate wearing a dust mask. At work I was able to come up with a squirrel cage from a used a/c that was being replaced.Seeing other people use them for air cleaners in their shop, i flipped this one so the air intake is directly above the blade. My whole design was to be able to access the motor/capacitor should either go out. The bottom section contains 2-1×12×12 filters and the option to add a 2"×12×12 or any combination thereof. I added a semi tightly fit cover of 1/8th BB ply to cover the filters. Upper section is just the plenum and a Jobs for the wires. I thought maybe I would need a 3 speed or variable fan switch but after amping it out, speaking with an a/c contractor and having a 40 year retired electrician give their blessings, a normal switch was all that's necessary. Amped out at 4 amps running. Did a incense/smoke test after it was done. Amazing how much smoke it pulled up into the filters so far out in front of the table. Hopefully this will help someone else with ideas of their own. Decibels went bad either at 74db.

  3. Big 3 day event every year in a nearby beach town. Always held July 2, 3, 4. This year landing right in the middle of a week. But then again, so was last year and I did very well my first year at this event. But this year it has been well below. Looking forward to the next couple of years when July 4th falls on Saturday, then Sunday, then Monday making for long weekends. Day 1, sold 35 versus 43 last year Day 2, sold 10, very slow sales then pop-up storms showed up, which was great as the heat was unbearable and it gave me an excuse to pack up and come home. Day 3 coming up. Big parade, then big crowd. We'll see if anyone is spending money today. All vendors are wondering what's going on. Not just this event but many others. Plenty of people, but very little spending. Good news is the new leash holders are getting a lot of attention and I took orders for 4 of them Tuesday. We'll see how the final day goes...

  4. The video of the sander left me a bit un-impressed. with the dust collection. The dust catcher seems to be a real pain. As we all know sanding dust is one of the worst because it is so fine. Just a thought on the adversity of saving money. I always bought the best tool that I could afford. In my single youth I bought whatever I wanted as I was only responsible to myself. Now that I am retired I find that my wood working hobby is fully self supportive+. So I am slowly replacing all of the "affordable tools" in my shop. I try to take my projects to the max of my skill sets with a minimum of fuss and mess. I used a $5 ryoby RO yard sale for many years until my wife gave me a Festool for Christmas.( Yes their prices are insane) If you have never used one and get the chance DON'T touch it! With it connected to their vacuum there is no dust. and no vibration. I buy all of my sanding supplies from Klingspore. I don't have much locally other than HD or Lowes and I am not thrilled with their selection. So online for my supplies. That said, I don't ever want to question myself again on my tool choices, so I do my homework, gather my resources until I can get what I want. I have fair number of HF tools, tools that get occasional use like buffing out the boat, pneumatic angle grinders etc. They have treated me well.

  8. I paint some of my backers. No problem with glue. If you are using clock inserts you could either buy a cheap drill press or just cut them out. The clock trim will cover any miner discrepancies. A lot of clocks have that box in the back and it’s not a problem. Always try to use Baltic Birch ply. It’s just that much better.

  9. Nice setup. I bought/installed the Wen air cleaner in my tiny shop. It works great. But...I still wear my dust mask because when I'm cutting I'm right over the work and get a lot of fine dust right in my face. I also have a 20 inch box fan to the right of my saw that collects a lot of the dust that is blown off the work as it is being cut. All I have to do is look at how much dust still collects on the inside of my glasses to know what I would be breathing if not for the mask. My advice....wear your mask. You only get 1 set of lungs. Some of the woods we use are toxic.

  12. I went to H/F and purchased the Bauer 5" ROS sander that is on sale right now for $24.95. I am very happy to say, it is all that I had hoped and more. It is lightweight, quiet, smooth and has 6 speeds. It uses the Velcro type paper, 8 holes for dust so the paper that I had from my cheapy H/F sander works with it. The biggest thing is the variable speed. I was using it on #4 and it was just perfect at that speed. I did notice that if you tried to use it at the lowest 2 speeds, it would bog and stop with very little pressure on the plate. But, all-in-all, I'm really happy. Especially with the price. It also has a dust collector on it and it works great. I do recommend removing it and lubing the o-ring that holds it on. It's a bear taking it off the first time. I plan to also buy the 1/4 sheet finishing sander that they have on sale but maybe next month. I've exceeded my tool budget for this month already.

    For Medicinal Use Only!

Though not really my thing, I have been getting requests for “medicine” boxes. I am amazed at how many folks in MD have gotten RXs for legal weed. Whatever floats your boat. Anyway, I made two more boxes yesterday. The one with the leaf is made with a Purple Heart top backed with African Rosewood, Sapele sides and Purple Heart base. The other one is taken from a Mr. Zig Zag tattoo. (Zig Zag rolling papers were popular in the 60s and 70s). The top is Zebrawood, backed with Purple Heart stained black, Sapele sides and Zebrawood base. I had originally planned to back the top in oiled Purple Heart, but it just looked muddled, thus the black stain.

  15. I made two alterations when implementing a multi-layered Dragonfly. (1) I painted the top layer black (2) I made the back layer out of sky-blue stained glass Here is a photo of it hanging in a window in our kitchen: The next photo, although somewhat faded, gives an idea of the context in which this is hanging. It is in one top corner and in the other is a stained glass dragonfly that I made a few years ago: We like dragonflies!

  17. What I look forward too the most is to spend time in and on the water at our island in Lake Pivabiska. The photo that I am attaching features canoeing. There are photos of me in two of my canoes with two of my grandchildren (Isla age 4 and Ethan age 2). The scroll sawn part was designed by Timothy (with a few design changes by me). In about a month Ethan, who is now 17, and I will be going on a 5 night canoe trip.

  19. I was asked from my golf course which I have been a member since inauguration to make a golf balls display for the members that passed away since the course opening. They take a golf ball and have their name printed on the ball and the death date. I made one before but we had more players that died that we had room on the display, so instead of adding to the previous I made a new one.

    Monkey Business

Jim Ern found this pattern in a magazine. This was an experiment. Wood is1X6 pine board. Since cutting pine can be problematic because of the grain I used this project to experiment with quite a few blades. The clear winner for me is the Pegas #7 Super Skip blade. It rips and cross cuts equally well and does not hang up because it does not discharge the sawdust quick enough. This was the first time using the blade.

    No more dust mask

Dust masks with exhaust vents are more comfortable. Something that happens in many industries is continued exposure to small amounts of dust, chemicals of the same over and over and the workers become oversensitive. Happens with woodworking. My family and I are messed up, so we are more careful with any chemical, dust exposure. Proably most would filter water and air so much. Use this unit with 2 hoses for going to an attic or mobile ventilation. Moving around apartments hasn't allowed any perment designs, 'Hopefully moving to a house soon'. With this unit bought metal duct pipe and large hose clamps, plywood. Cut a hole in the plywood, pushed the metal duct through the hole. Put a hose clamp on each side to keep the duct in place. Than braced the plywood against the open window. Connected a hose to the inside metal duct. 26. Klingspor gold, Mirka Bulldog gold, and there are others that I use that are very good. I buy in bulk because I use alot of sandpaper in many forms including rolls for my drum sander. I will say again sandpaper is not all the same and if you were able to compare side by side you would see it right away. But to each their own. Happy sanding.

  30. BTW- The Zig Zag Man was one of the most popular tattoo designs from the 1960s. The folk story goes that in the 19th century during a battle of Sevastopol, a French soldier also known as Zouave, had the misfortune of having his clay pipe broken by a flying bullet. Needing a smoke he decided to try rolling his tobacco in a piece of paper torn from the bag that his gunpowder came in. This worked but it was in 1894 that the Braunstein Brothers figured out the process of interleaving papers in a zig zag manner and putting them in a convenient paper booklet that took the market by storm.

  31. It probably depends on what you are building but I find huge differences in sand paper brands. When I am building cabinets or furniture, I want the best I can find. I use predominately Klingspor Gold. It cuts cleans and remains sharp. It gives me great results when finishing. I want good consistent results and that is what I get. I also use the Klingspor for cloth backed narrow rolls, Mac Mops, and sanding mops. But whatever works for you is great.

  32. You said Norton.. that rung a bell so i looked up what papers I use on Menards site.. that's the stuff I buy.. But I don't see the bulk / box packs like I buy.. Being in the autobody work for a few years.. you sure learn quick what is good sandpaper and what isn't.. we elusively used 3M back in the day.. I know they have some new stuff out there these days... but I've always went to the 3M because that was what I know.. when working on cars... bit pricey for me with the woodwork stuff when the Norton brand works wonders for me and it's cheaper.. Have to watch the 3M stuff though.. they do or did sell a low end paper too so don't be fooled with that stuff.. For some reason... The duragold stuff rings a bell.. maybe what HF sells? I know the stuff they sell is about as good as the Norton that I use.. I know because I was using it up until about two years ago.. Just because it's sold at HF doesn't make it junk or cheap.. Buying bulk boxed Norton is cheaper per sheet than HF stuff is the only reason I changed.. https://www.menards.com/main/paint/sandpaper-abrasives/power-tool-sandpaper-abrasives/norton-reg-5-8-hole-hook-sand-trade-sanding-disc-6-pack/50177-038/p-1444423450444-c-14240.htm?tid=4724280280341260904&ipos=11

  34. Just ordered one from ebay, $3.03 plus .99 shipping. Also bought a mini micro pin vise and a set of bits for those times that I'm scrolling along and discover an undrilled hole. The kind that drill as you push and then usually breaks after a few uses. lol Well it is only $4.00, so worth a shot.

    Wall Clock Backers?

I use a lot of 1/2" Baltic birch for backer and stain it Jacobean. This clock is 14" x 14" so I would not be able to use a solid backer. I never get any negative comments about the edges. I also paint them black at times. I stack cut the front five at a time and cut the backers individually.
