    Alex Fox pattern

I haven’t finish this but I am liking it as it is. Alex did a good job on the pattern!

  2. I have cut this Shela Landry pattern before but this time I chose a different finishing method. Cut in cherry, the blank is .4" in thickness and approximately 14" x 9". After cutting and sanding the cherry it was soaked in Danish oil, wiped down and allowed to dry thoroughly. This was followed by 4 coats of Watco wipe-on gloss poly. Despite my best efforts there were dust nibs galore. I wet-sanded it using 2000 grade sand paper on a sanding block to level the finish and remove the dust nibs. This was made difficult because the poly tends to develop a slight ridge at each cut of the letters. That caused highly visible shiny spots amidst the satin rubbed finish. This necessitated lengthy and delicate hand sanding of each bright spot. (Next time I will use the Satin wipe-on). After all of the sanding was done, I applied a single coat of Briwax to increase the luster. The complete look is difficult to capture with the camera but it has no visible flaws and rivals a spray-booth lacquer finish. I have just ordered more of this ultra fine sand paper up to 3000 grit.

  4. I was asked from my golf course which I have been a member since inauguration to make a golf balls display for the members that passed away since the course opening. They take a golf ball and have their name printed on the ball and the death date. I made one before but we had more players that died that we had room on the display, so instead of adding to the previous I made a new one.

  6. What I look forward too the most is to spend time in and on the water at our island in Lake Pivabiska. The photo that I am attaching features canoeing. There are photos of me in two of my canoes with two of my grandchildren (Isla age 4 and Ethan age 2). The scroll sawn part was designed by Timothy (with a few design changes by me). In about a month Ethan, who is now 17, and I will be going on a 5 night canoe trip.

  7. This seems to be what summertime is about here in Michigan.. I almost hate to leave the house in the summer... ... Funny too because everyone complains about the roads.. then they also complain about the traffic back-ups due to the road work..

  8. Made these for a friend of mine to put on her porch. It’s a Sue Mey pattern mainly, I just changed the words. She said her house was called this!

    Ocooch Hardwoods

All to often we post when we are dissatisfied, not this time - Kudo's to Ocooch Hardwoods. I wanted to share my experience with Ocooch Hardwoods. One board of Curly Maple arrived with a rotten spot in the middle of the board, about 8 inches long on one side and 5 inches on the other. I emailed them sending pics of the board, and the next business day I got a shipment notification that a replacement board was on the way, as well as an email apologizing for the board that was sent.. Outstanding response to the problem. So thank you Ethan at Ocooch Hardwoods for responding so quickly. To put this is some perspective, this is only my second order, and I do not place large orders, it is great to know that Ocooch treats all customers the same regardless. https://ocoochhardwoods.com/

  10. I have had a few Dead Heads suggest that I should scroll something with a “3 Finger Jerry” theme. I figured since I have been on a box kick that I’d give it a try. So there you have it; I made an image based from an X-ray of a Dead guy’s hand. The box top and base are African Rosewood, the sides cherry. (For those that may not know, the late Jerry Garcia, guitarist for the Grateful Dead band, lost most of a finger when he was a kid due to a hatchet accident with his brother and was often referred to as “3 Finger Jerry”)

  11. I wouldn't sweat it, Ray. These things have a way of generating a life of their own. Just the nature of the internet beast. Nothing wrong with you being happy with a purchase and wanting to pass along info on a deal. Also nothing wrong with differing opinions being offered. Compared to the flame wars I've seen on other forums, this is nothing.

  16. I'm not that old yet but I still like to buy low cost things.. unless it's something I intend to use for business that would require a lot of use.. that said i still cannot see $400+ for a random orbital sander.. maybe I'm just not seeing the value as others do in that.. I'm not knocking them in anyway.. If I was retired and rich like some of the others and just scroll for fun to give away my projects.. Sure I'd buy the best.. Maybe.. But I'm feeding a family of 5 and putting one of the kids through college etc etc... I can't afford not to sell my crafts.. as I couldn't afford the wood and electric to run my shop otherwise, LOL So in my eyes.. many of the lower end tools and stores like HF etc.. really appeal to me..for many tools that may end up getting limited use..

  17. If you get the Hepa filter for the Fein, it makes it as expensive as the Festool, almost. I've had no problems with my Fein,,, yet, but I agree with you that there is not enough price difference to not go with the Festool. Being certified,,,, not sure that means much to me, other than maybe Fein didn't get it certified, maybe they were late for the test,,,, but the Festool is a little quieter, and maybe could last longer, I don't know. But my Fein is, so far, serving me well. I do not have a Hepa filter.... I am 75, I smoked for many years... is a Hepa filter going to save my life..... I'm just rambling here. I can't say one is better than the other, I think maybe Festool is better, because everyone say so... I have never even touched a Festool product.... I would really like to, but I am not paying for one to just leave to my un-interested kids, in a few years, they would sell it in an estate sale for like $20.....

  19. Not to hijack this thread but friends recently had their house burn down. It was a total loss. He had back up drives, memory sticks and even had them in a safe. Because the fire was so hot nothing survived. Bottom line the only safe storage is on the cloud.

  20. Day 3 of my mega event was exciting in that at least 2 vendor booths were "raided" by the authorities, Homeland Security oversees trademark infringement and they confiscated all materials from the vendors selling NFL and college team merchandise. Now I wonder how hefty the fines will be. I know one of the vendors as we see each other at a lot of events, not sure if he'll share with me what happens, but I'm certainly curious as I hear rumors of $10,000 fines and some have said it can be $10,000 per item (which would be extreme, but hey, the NFL, etc don't mess around). Bottom line, DON'T RISK IT... it's not worth it. This one vendor was displaying NFL team logos, very nicely done, woodwork. They didn't confiscate his automotive company logos... It was funny, when I was roaming the venue the first day and saw his stuff I almost asked if he was licensed for that and now I'm so glad I didn't because he'd think I ratted him out. LOL!!!

    2 1/2 Hours Later

Picture 1: I'm cutting this two up on 3/16" Luan ply. The pattern is mounted on the wood with Duck clear shelf liner. After cutting about 25% of the pattern I gave up. The pattern kept releasing from the wood. I spent more time with Scotch tape than I did cutting. Picture 2: I started over again. This time I had the brilliant idea to copy the pattern on to Avery adhesive back label stock. It held beautifull. No liftin, just good cutting. A real pleasure. Picture 3: Dang, the pattern won't release. I'm afraid to soak it with mineral spirits as I have no idea how the Avery adhesive will react. Will it turn out to be a mess? Don't know. Sooo, Picture 3: Start removing wearing magnifiers using Xacto knife and tweezers. The pattern would split. The top layer coming off and the adhesive base left to be scraped off carefull trying not to break the very small parts of the cutting. Picture 4: TWO and ONE HALF hours later. Success at last. I'm not knocking the shelf liner or the Avery label. Just saying how it worked for me. I use both items. However, I think the next thing I cut like this is to cement the pattern directly to the wood and release with mineral spirits. I have not done that before but I remember several scrollers doing it that way.

  22. A big part of what I made went to family members. The paddle I once made I gave to my younger Son who at the time had 2 Daughters and 1 Son. His older Daughter kept that paddle and sent the picture to me on my Face Book Page. She got lots of comments when she posted it on her page. The last time I looked it was up in the hundreds.

  23. Big 3 day event every year in a nearby beach town. Always held July 2, 3, 4. This year landing right in the middle of a week. But then again, so was last year and I did very well my first year at this event. But this year it has been well below. Looking forward to the next couple of years when July 4th falls on Saturday, then Sunday, then Monday making for long weekends. Day 1, sold 35 versus 43 last year Day 2, sold 10, very slow sales then pop-up storms showed up, which was great as the heat was unbearable and it gave me an excuse to pack up and come home. Day 3 coming up. Big parade, then big crowd. We'll see if anyone is spending money today. All vendors are wondering what's going on. Not just this event but many others. Plenty of people, but very little spending. Good news is the new leash holders are getting a lot of attention and I took orders for 4 of them Tuesday. We'll see how the final day goes...

  28. My next door vendor neighbor the past 3 days was a former police officer and he's the one that told me it was Homeland Security that handles this type of thing and I confirmed it with some google searches this morning. He said he sees it at State Fairs and larger venues and was surprised they hit our "little" venue with 150 vendors. As you said though, they're apparently really cracking down on it. It was funny, I saw a truck being backed up into the park where no vehicles are typically allowed and wondered what was going on, then I saw guys loading up bin after bin of items and I thought "Oh wow, maybe a vendor became ill or has an emergency and is having to leave." Then word got around as to what happened.

  29. It was on the news earlier this year and it's been all over some of the selling forums I belong to about how they are cracking down on this sort of stuff.. I posted that they are doing internet sweeps on etsy and other handmade selling sites.. along with Amazon and Ebay.. I posted a heads up a few weeks ago.. basically my post got mocked and what have you about it.. then some took it personally as if I was calling them out personally and they start asking me if I got permission for this and that.. so be it whatever.. trying to do a nice gesture and heads up to save you're butt in some way and nobody even said a thanks for heads up etc.. Oh well.. Maybe they'll take you seriously.. with this post.. Let me say thank you for taking the time to give another heads up.. These copyright holders are not messing around.. I'm quite surprised that they didn't take the automotive logos.. logos of anything is a big NO.. My car clocks I'm working to sort of faze out.. but they could fall under fair use.. too as with maybe the logos.. either way.. I'll be selling what I have and fazing out the stuff.. I had my Harley puzzle taken down but mainly because I used the word Harley to describe it.. However I won't be making more of those either.. Not sure if you make that one of not.. but I'll say.. be careful because Harley don't mess around with it either..

  31. JT, I respect your opinions and value your wealth of knowledge, I guess I get a little touchy on the low end product bashing as many of us start out buying cheap tools.. I started my business with nothing but a freebie scroll saw and even some leftover scraps of plywood and built it up over the years.. When I started out I was using a block of wood and stapled sandpapers to it.. going from that to a power sander was night and day difference.. there is a reason for those HF stores.. not everyone can afford a cheap sander let alone a Festool sander.. I do realize that you get what you pay for.. just as one gets out of business what they put into it.. Again Kevin 2 ways to look at it. Many newbies don't know better and think cheap is as good as better. They wind up spending twice because the first broke down quickly. I wish I had people tell me there were better tools than Craftsman when I started out. These forums were not even around. Bought 2 routers and both broke within 2 years. Rest assured you will not hear another peep from me about HF or Walmart (oh yea same type of store for the same reason)

    No more dust mask

I also have an air cleaner, a Grizzly which I believe to be the same as a Wen, a box fan with a furnace filter to my right, but additionally I have another box fan to my left blowing dust from left to right. If I wear a brand new 3M dust mask I get virtually nothing on it. Before I went to this set up I would scroll Padouk and have red dust in my nose hair if I didn’t wear a mask. Now? Nothing.

Everyone has a difference in opinions as to what a good value is.. as someone stated back a few post.. why buy high end stuff that your kids won't cherish.. and would sell for dirt cheep at an estate sale.. For me buying higher end stuff makes a little more sense because I'm business.. but I'm also realistic and do not buy ANYTHING I don't have cash money in hand for the purchase..

  38. Exactly!! But what gets me about these type of topics is the original poster typically is trying to help out others that are less fortunate by showing others what they think is a bargain and someone comes along and says they’d never buy that or they’d never use that. I look at it as though a cheap HF sander is an upgrade to a piece of sandpaper and your hand. Nothing wrong with buying/owning high end or low end stuff as long as you have the cash to buy it.

  39. Didn't want to bore everyone with just the desk clocks all the time so I changed it up a bit and made a few wall hang clocks.. These are actually pretty quick to cut.. Stack cut 4 of each one..

  40. That is absolutely exquisite! Beautifully done. Your pastor will be very pleased. Is the wood .4" or 4" thick? Four inches will not fit my saw. Just curious.

  41. No, @kmmcrafts, my Fein has two speeds.... "ON" and "OFF"...... just saying...
    1 point
  42. If I remember correctly Fein only has one speed? or was it two speed.. the Festool does have two speeds or variable? I do not remember now but last year when i was doing the research on the two.. that was another deciding factor... I have really bad allergies.. not so much to wood dust.. but the wood dust is an irritant to my existing allergies.. so the Hepa would be a plus for me.. even though I'm quite certain I'll still be wearing my mask anyway.. LOL..

  43. The Festool dust exstractor is one of the next tools i intend to buy.. as you said Quality, quiet, and Hepa rated.. I really looked hard at the Fien.. was set to buy because it is quite a lot cheaper.. BUT.. The reviews I read and seen on the NEW models isn't very good at all.. watched a youtube video too and the guy pointed out several cost cutting things they did between the old one he was replacing it with and the new one.. Made my mind up to wait for a Festool.. Yes expensive.. but also quality is there on that brand still.. And the price point isn't that big a difference if you get all the gadgets needed to make it a Hepa vac.. still not "certified" Hepa..If I were just a hobbyist I'd probably go with the Fien..

Another option is to store one of those drives, memory sticks, discs, etc. at a friend's house, family member's house or in a safety deposit box at a bank if you have one already. Now, if a major natural disaster hits in your area, and those friends or family also live in the area, it still might not matter if you all get nailed.

    Scroller's Choice

Safes are rated for burglary and fire resistance. Most home improvement safes are bottom of the line ratings on burglary and can't handle fire. There are specific safes for fire. As the price goes up you can find combination safes that are highly rated for fire and burglary. The top rated are basically bank vaults. Renting the smallest bank box is going to give you access and a high rated safe. If you use cloud storage, do your homework on their hack security and encryption. I would even go as far as buying encryption software for personal sensitive information. A top notch security professional is going to ask questions to match your needs for the right safe. Don't buy a chest safe, they just walk out with it and take their time breaking into it. If you buy your own safe, bolt it to the floor. Easier to bring a cart and take the safe they get caught banging away at it in an owners home. RJF
