This Charles Hand Pattern Took Some Patience
Lucky2 and 4 others reacted to New to Scrollin for a topic
This took quite some time but well worth it. Charles Hand just simply makes incredible patterns. I especially like how the connection between leopard and the ground is accomplished here. It just has a great 3 D effect here. So many other patterns like this and they just don't seem life-like. Anyway, this was a blast. No straight on shots of the whole piece per Hand's request5 points -
All to often we post when we are dissatisfied, not this time - Kudo's to Ocooch Hardwoods. I wanted to share my experience with Ocooch Hardwoods. One board of Curly Maple arrived with a rotten spot in the middle of the board, about 8 inches long on one side and 5 inches on the other. I emailed them sending pics of the board, and the next business day I got a shipment notification that a replacement board was on the way, as well as an email apologizing for the board that was sent.. Outstanding response to the problem. So thank you Ethan at Ocooch Hardwoods for responding so quickly. To put this is some perspective, this is only my second order, and I do not place large orders, it is great to know that Ocooch treats all customers the same regardless. https://ocoochhardwoods.com/4 points

Nativity pattern by Steve Good. Each figure is three layers of 1/4” woods.they are about 6” tall. Woods used are Mahogany for the Shepherd Boy, dog and donkey. Aspen for the Angel and sheep, Walnut for Joseph, Cherry for Mary, Yellowheart for the child and one Wiseman, Purpleheart and Redheart for the other two Wisemen, Red Oak for the Camel and Ash for the palm tree. The manger is 1/2” laminated pine and the roof is 1/8” slices from a construction grade 2x4. I wanted to age the manger, but I don’t like to stain. I thought about burning with a propane torch, but I don’t like that look. I found a product at Home Depot that ages wood. It brush’s on clear and in about 30 minutes the wood is gray. I think I like the look! Since the figures are cut from 1/4” wood, I stacked two layers of hardwoods and made two sets. The figures were soaked in my 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. This brings out the natural color and grain of the wood. Then when dry, I topcoated with Deft semi gloss spray lacquer. The first picture is no finish.2 points

Guitar Pick Tray Pattern I needed a container of some sort to hold my assortment of picks so that I could quickly get one when I needed it. Up to now I had them scattered all over my desk. So I decided to build this little box in the shape of a guitar pick to fill my needs. It will hold quite a few picks (standard or thumb and finger). I made a couple of them (one larger than the other) and one of them has an inlay in the bottom, which I explain how to make. You don't have to use this for picks, of course. Might make a nice little candy dish. You can download the free pattern from my FREE PATTERN PAGE: BUILD VIDEO I've also done a step by step video which shows me making the tray and explains how to do a simple wood inlay, in case you have not done one before. You can see the video on My YouTube Channel2 points

I made the pattern from a cartoon I saw. A Halligan bar is what firefighters use for forced entry. Its like a crow bar on steroids. I stack cut this with the 4mm BB on top and the 5mm white plastic on the bottom. I have never done a saying by starting at one end and working through. It seems to go quicker if I do random letters. What I found with this one is I did all the dots over the I's, then all the a's, then all the e's, before I copped on to what I was doing.2 points -

Hey Gang, Exhausting 3 days. Day 1 was "OK" as reported, day 2 was extreme heat followed by storms causing me to shut down at 2pm. Counting it as a total wash-out. Day 3 yesterday was solid. Finished the 3 days selling 86 puzzles, down from 132 last year, but right at the 43 or 44 per day not counting the wash-out day. Next year will be better with July 4th being on Saturday, the event will be Thursday, Friday, Saturday whereas this year it was Tue, Wed, Thu. The new leash holders were well received and I took orders for 6 of them to make. I'm able to offer 4 different color hooks... Brass colored cup hook or can go with "J" hook in silver, antique brass or black.2 points

Day 3 of my mega event was exciting in that at least 2 vendor booths were "raided" by the authorities, Homeland Security oversees trademark infringement and they confiscated all materials from the vendors selling NFL and college team merchandise. Now I wonder how hefty the fines will be. I know one of the vendors as we see each other at a lot of events, not sure if he'll share with me what happens, but I'm certainly curious as I hear rumors of $10,000 fines and some have said it can be $10,000 per item (which would be extreme, but hey, the NFL, etc don't mess around). Bottom line, DON'T RISK IT... it's not worth it. This one vendor was displaying NFL team logos, very nicely done, woodwork. They didn't confiscate his automotive company logos... It was funny, when I was roaming the venue the first day and saw his stuff I almost asked if he was licensed for that and now I'm so glad I didn't because he'd think I ratted him out. LOL!!!1 point

Milo (the kitten)
Loskoppie reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
Last November, my grandson Ethan and my daughter Kathleen rescued very young kitten who had, somehow, found its way to the middle of the street in front of their house. They didn't think they were cat people but Milo stole their hearts so no they, now, are cat people. I took a picture of Milo (at the estimated age of 5 weeks) three days after the adoption. A little while ago, I saw an Alex Fox pattern for a Kitten that looks a lot like Milo. This inspired the framed photo and scrollwork that is attached.1 point -

Cutting for Grand Daughters
jollyred reacted to Eugene Downes for a topic
A big part of what I made went to family members. The paddle I once made I gave to my younger Son who at the time had 2 Daughters and 1 Son. His older Daughter kept that paddle and sent the picture to me on my Face Book Page. She got lots of comments when she posted it on her page. The last time I looked it was up in the hundreds.1 point -

I have had a few Dead Heads suggest that I should scroll something with a “3 Finger Jerry” theme. I figured since I have been on a box kick that I’d give it a try. So there you have it; I made an image based from an X-ray of a Dead guy’s hand. The box top and base are African Rosewood, the sides cherry. (For those that may not know, the late Jerry Garcia, guitarist for the Grateful Dead band, lost most of a finger when he was a kid due to a hatchet accident with his brother and was often referred to as “3 Finger Jerry”)1 point

So much discussion and ruffled feathers. I have used a lot of different Sanders in my life including sanding blocks. I still use them when applicable and usually put a layer of felt on the wooden block. My favorite RO sander is my Festool. While some say low cost tools get bashed but nothing like a Festool. I have not used the HF sander but have picked it up and was very uncomfortable in my hands. I pick my tools based on the ergonomics. The Festool sander is the only one I can use with experiencing significant discomfort.1 point -

Thanks Bill and Jim. I think I'll just lay back and watch for a while. If something piques my interest, I'll add what I have to say but no more of starting a thread. It just doesn't pay. I get the feeling that I rub feathers in the wrong way. I seem to have my best discussions using the Private Message venue.1 point

This is like talking politics and/or religion: lots of smoke and heat, but little light. @octoolguy if I was in the market for a new ROS, I would appreciate the hands on review. (But I just got a new one in 2018)1 point -

I don't order a great deal from them, but everything I have received from them has been great wood as advertised. And their boards are the advertised width and length. No almost 4" or whatever. Great wood and good service.1 point -

I wouldn't sweat it, Ray. These things have a way of generating a life of their own. Just the nature of the internet beast. Nothing wrong with you being happy with a purchase and wanting to pass along info on a deal. Also nothing wrong with differing opinions being offered. Compared to the flame wars I've seen on other forums, this is nothing.1 point -
Fantastic work! Fab-4 is correct. But, I think the color should be shading with a woodburner pen. Experiment a little on the scraps to learn just how that particular wood reacts to the heat. No 2 pieces of wood are the same to woodburn. I really want to see it enhanced either way!1 point

Alex Fox desined Dragonfly with a glass backing
Lucky2 reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
I made two alterations when implementing a multi-layered Dragonfly. (1) I painted the top layer black (2) I made the back layer out of sky-blue stained glass Here is a photo of it hanging in a window in our kitchen: The next photo, although somewhat faded, gives an idea of the context in which this is hanging. It is in one top corner and in the other is a stained glass dragonfly that I made a few years ago: We like dragonflies!1 point -
