    NHL/MLB Logos

Hi All First post showing some recent work here. Since we are a large sport loving family outside of Philly, and since I just started back with scrollsawing, here are a couple of my recent projects. Why a Bruins logo you may ask? Because I am a huge Bruins fan since I was very young (My kids hate me for it!! LOL) (These are just to hang in my office and not for sale) Any feedback would be greatly appreciated Thank you Ed

Pattern is off the internet. Total dimensions 20X8". 3/16 Luan. #1 Pegas MG blade. It is not complete. The little whatchanacallits in the J, d and a are missing. I have to glue them in but I have to have someone else do it. My neuropathy makes my hands tremor preventing me from doing it.

  7. I took a break from the small plaques that I was doing and worked on some cornhole boards. My arm was killing me by the time I finished these. I now officially hate making these things now. So, if anyone asks me to make one for them., THEY ARE GONNA PAY A PREMIUM. I may have pushed one of them but he are the pics of the ones o have made. My son's colts boards, the vape shop I go to., and my nephew the doctor.

  8. Day 3 of my mega event was exciting in that at least 2 vendor booths were "raided" by the authorities, Homeland Security oversees trademark infringement and they confiscated all materials from the vendors selling NFL and college team merchandise. Now I wonder how hefty the fines will be. I know one of the vendors as we see each other at a lot of events, not sure if he'll share with me what happens, but I'm certainly curious as I hear rumors of $10,000 fines and some have said it can be $10,000 per item (which would be extreme, but hey, the NFL, etc don't mess around). Bottom line, DON'T RISK IT... it's not worth it. This one vendor was displaying NFL team logos, very nicely done, woodwork. They didn't confiscate his automotive company logos... It was funny, when I was roaming the venue the first day and saw his stuff I almost asked if he was licensed for that and now I'm so glad I didn't because he'd think I ratted him out. LOL!!!

  10. This took quite some time but well worth it. Charles Hand just simply makes incredible patterns. I especially like how the connection between leopard and the ground is accomplished here. It just has a great 3 D effect here. So many other patterns like this and they just don't seem life-like. Anyway, this was a blast. No straight on shots of the whole piece per Hand's request

    Floorboards

I have been given several lengths of laminated flooring boards & decided to have a go & try to cut something with them .I picked this pattern as it was fairly simple just in case it did not work out. I found it cut nice & clean with no tear outs etc ,but also I went through more blades than I normally do.

    Nativity

Nativity pattern by Steve Good. Each figure is three layers of 1/4” woods.they are about 6” tall. Woods used are Mahogany for the Shepherd Boy, dog and donkey. Aspen for the Angel and sheep, Walnut for Joseph, Cherry for Mary, Yellowheart for the child and one Wiseman, Purpleheart and Redheart for the other two Wisemen, Red Oak for the Camel and Ash for the palm tree. The manger is 1/2” laminated pine and the roof is 1/8” slices from a construction grade 2x4. I wanted to age the manger, but I don’t like to stain. I thought about burning with a propane torch, but I don’t like that look. I found a product at Home Depot that ages wood. It brush’s on clear and in about 30 minutes the wood is gray. I think I like the look! Since the figures are cut from 1/4” wood, I stacked two layers of hardwoods and made two sets. The figures were soaked in my 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. This brings out the natural color and grain of the wood. Then when dry, I topcoated with Deft semi gloss spray lacquer. The first picture is no finish.

  15. My friend Peggy West created a chalk drawing of a plane and gave it to me as a gift recently. It is now hanging in my Woodworking Shed in a frame that I made out of pine lumber. The frame itself is very simple, but it became special when I cut out some tools, painted them black, and glued them to the frame. I found the templates for the tools in the Ornaments for Charity "book". They were placed there by 'Dan' in 2010.

Picture 1: I'm cutting this two up on 3/16" Luan ply. The pattern is mounted on the wood with Duck clear shelf liner. After cutting about 25% of the pattern I gave up. The pattern kept releasing from the wood. I spent more time with Scotch tape than I did cutting. Picture 2: I started over again. This time I had the brilliant idea to copy the pattern on to Avery adhesive back label stock. It held beautifull. No liftin, just good cutting. A real pleasure. Picture 3: Dang, the pattern won't release. I'm afraid to soak it with mineral spirits as I have no idea how the Avery adhesive will react. Will it turn out to be a mess? Don't know. Sooo, Picture 3: Start removing wearing magnifiers using Xacto knife and tweezers. The pattern would split. The top layer coming off and the adhesive base left to be scraped off carefull trying not to break the very small parts of the cutting. Picture 4: TWO and ONE HALF hours later. Success at last. I'm not knocking the shelf liner or the Avery label. Just saying how it worked for me. I use both items. However, I think the next thing I cut like this is to cement the pattern directly to the wood and release with mineral spirits. I have not done that before but I remember several scrollers doing it that way.

As far as I can tell yes. No residue. The only thing I noticed was if you set up a pattern and then let it sit for a few weeks before cutting it wanted to peel off on its own. Bit if you do it as you need it, no problem.

    Pegas Blades??

I just sent off an email to Grobet USA and explained my situation. I can't produce any paperwork for my purchase but I know it was from D & D so now, I'll wait to see what they say. I did ask for the procedure to replace my blades. I only have about 11 dozen left.

I use cheapo dollar store masking tape, then spray adhesive to hold the pattern to the tape. Cheap masking tape peels right off, no issues.

    Pegas Blades??

I took Paul suggestions and emailed D & D. I also took it one step further and contacted the US rep for Pegas. Neither came out and said it was a quality issue or a process change that failed but as Ray reported the notch is no more. The Pegas rep, who is the National Sales Manager for Grobet the USA who is the US distributor for Pegas, told me they replaced the notched blades that were turned back in. So if you still have those suspect blades contact Grobet USA and they should replace them.(email@grobetusa.com). For me I am comfortable and will be buying more blades this week.

    Pegas Blades??

To update, I emailed DnD and they affirmed that the notch was an attempt at something that didn't work out and there are no more "notched" blades. So, I guess we can all breathe easier and reorder as needed.

    Pegas Blades??

I am watching this thread as I am low on 5's and need to reorder soon. Like in the next two weeks. I read either on FB or another forum that the "notch" was a defect When the "notch" occurred many people complained due to breakage. I further read that D and D replaced all the "notch" blades with defect free blades. Another major Pegas sell did not. Take that with a grain of salt as we all know everything we read on the internet is true. Anyway D and D is where I normally get my Pegas blades so I will probably order from them.

    Pegas Blades??

This is sort of why I'm trying to find out if they ever got the #5's issue figured out.. I've heard two stories.. 1) is that they ran a bunch of bad blades that got through QC... 2) they are trying to make them marked for what side is top / bottom but messed up some and are experimenting with that process... In either case... Pegas has been my go to blade for a couple years now... and don't think the others have better QC and that they don't get into the hands of the users.. a few years prior to me switching to Pegas... FD ran a whole bunch of bad blades... so they all do get a few bad batches that reach the end user.... I've gotta order a few gross of #3's and wondered about ordering some "hopefully" good #5's hoping they have this bad batch sorted out.. and I could get back to my #5 Pegas.. which was my most used blade. Guess if nobody has ordered and confirms that they now have good blades.. Maybe I'll order a dozen instead of a gross and see what I end up with..

  37. The boards are easy to make. The painting (depending on artwork) is the pain. You can find dimensions on line. 2ft x 4ft face, 6 inch hole, 9 inches down from the top. 2x4 boards for the body and legs. The incline of the board is 12 inches to the top of the board,

    Pegas Blades??

I bought a gross of them about the same time as you. Mine have the notch but I haven't seen any with a snaffle tooth. I started breaking blades in my EX. So I just install the blade higher and put the notch right where the clamp screw is. No more breakage and there are still reverse teeth at the bottom. I can see that you might not be able to do that with the Hawk. I should have sent them back but procrastinated. I'll use them up.

  40. Just got back from a long 4th of July weekend road-trip....drove from Austin Tx to Pensacola Fl, turned out to be around 11 hours going, 13 returning (hit an interstate shutdown in Lake Charles, LA, that had I-10 completely closed and all traffic routed to the I-610 bypass....took us 30 minutes to go 3/4 mile before we could exit and take back roads...through questionable parts of town...you know you're in the wrong area when the church has bars on the windows). Oceans/beaches aren't really my thing, so I probably won't do any beach-themed pieces (gimme mountains, forests...places you can go from hotel to car without dropping two pounds of water weight from the humidity...I sweated like a politician in a church with bars on the windows). For me...summer is outdoor fun, and one of my fondest memories of summer camp as a kid was trying to get the hang of archery. Now that I've discovered there's such a thing as "cross-eye dominance", where I'm right-handed but my dominant/strong eye is the left one, I'm a faaaaar better shot than I was as a kid. Our daughter is enjoying archery as well (its quieter than the gun range, for one). So we're spending a lot more time at the archery range nowadays. And summertime means we're not stuck waiting for time on the line at the indoor range, there's an outdoor range nearby as well. I may even break out the homemade blowguns again.... 1x10 scrap of whiteboard, cut with a Pegas #5 blade. Had a bit of a goof with the bowstring, I cut the inside pieces, then did the outside and my tracking was a bit off towards the left side. Got a bit closer than I'd've liked to the inner wall, which resulted in a kink/slight crack. I'll shore it up with some wood glue.

  42. I have cut this Shela Landry pattern before but this time I chose a different finishing method. Cut in cherry, the blank is .4" in thickness and approximately 14" x 9". After cutting and sanding the cherry it was soaked in Danish oil, wiped down and allowed to dry thoroughly. This was followed by 4 coats of Watco wipe-on gloss poly. Despite my best efforts there were dust nibs galore. I wet-sanded it using 2000 grade sand paper on a sanding block to level the finish and remove the dust nibs. This was made difficult because the poly tends to develop a slight ridge at each cut of the letters. That caused highly visible shiny spots amidst the satin rubbed finish. This necessitated lengthy and delicate hand sanding of each bright spot. (Next time I will use the Satin wipe-on). After all of the sanding was done, I applied a single coat of Briwax to increase the luster. The complete look is difficult to capture with the camera but it has no visible flaws and rivals a spray-booth lacquer finish. I have just ordered more of this ultra fine sand paper up to 3000 grit.

  45. https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/34025-famous-people-copy-rights/ I have to say the last few days I must be reading a whole different set of threads being posted. No where did I see any mocking of this post or calling out of anyone. Just a couple questions that got answered very nicely. Not sure how many people here sell on Etsy, Ebay or even their own web sites but i bet it is not many. Copyright laws are no joke and have been a thorn to all who have done any type crafts over the years. Just like these selling sites that want in on the tax money they were losing so do the copyright enforcers. They see an avenue that can generate money or loss of it because of the internet sales that have surpassed the brick and mortar avenues. So the uptick of enforcement. Iggy got to see this in person at a med sized show and I have too many years ago. But everyone knew that Disney, Harley, Sports both college and pro protect their names and brands. This has not changed for 35 years that I have been doing this. Famous people may have hired some company to go after their share. With cell phones and cameras all around us everywhere we go every day of the week. We need to be extra careful when it comes to selling anything. Who knows what is going to happen with all these Garage sale sites showing up on FaceBook. That can be the next attack. So you have been warned there too. But knock off of brands has been a battle that just keeps growing and growing. Don't get caught in the middle and you should be fine. I can not answer to those that sell on those sites and to what words are taboo or not but Kevin has given out this heads up and we thank him. Iggy we thank you too for bringing this up and actually giving a first hand posting.

  46. I have had a few Dead Heads suggest that I should scroll something with a “3 Finger Jerry” theme. I figured since I have been on a box kick that I’d give it a try. So there you have it; I made an image based from an X-ray of a Dead guy’s hand. The box top and base are African Rosewood, the sides cherry. (For those that may not know, the late Jerry Garcia, guitarist for the Grateful Dead band, lost most of a finger when he was a kid due to a hatchet accident with his brother and was often referred to as “3 Finger Jerry”)

  47. Yeah I get what ur saying Jim and I’m not trying to say this in an argumentative manner and I shouldn’t have ever posted any of this. But I’ll say one more thing. Do you think if I had a trademark out there homeland security would protect it? yeah they would if I were able to funnel them a bundle of cash. Maybe a beach house or donation to one of there personal “non profit “ yeah right! Organizations. I’m not saying they should allow someone to rip off trademarks. Just saying there is always agenda backed by dirty money with our government.....always,always,always and one more always!

  49. BTW- The Zig Zag Man was one of the most popular tattoo designs from the 1960s. The folk story goes that in the 19th century during a battle of Sevastopol, a French soldier also known as Zouave, had the misfortune of having his clay pipe broken by a flying bullet. Needing a smoke he decided to try rolling his tobacco in a piece of paper torn from the bag that his gunpowder came in. This worked but it was in 1894 that the Braunstein Brothers figured out the process of interleaving papers in a zig zag manner and putting them in a convenient paper booklet that took the market by storm.

  50. The sides of each box are made up of three 1/2” rings, each one comprised of 60 “pegs” scrolled on the inside and outside, i.e. 120 cuts on each ring. The wood was Sapele, sometimes called African Mahogany. I have started on two more boxes so you can see one of the rings. The newer ones are cherry, and I stack cut two at a time.
