I'm curious about how others do it!
Wilson142 and 2 others reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
I am kind of surprised at some of the comments. I have several pieces of wood that I am saving for the right project. They have something special about them...a beautiful piece of Koa, Tiger striped maple,Birds Eye Maple, etc. Eventually, I will make a box, Intarsia, puzzle or something else. The pieces are not big enough for a cabinet or table I guess I am the so called guilty party in someone's mind. I do not really understand the comments or the need for them. I am sorry you do not have room but nothing I can do about that.3 points -
Beware C.A.Glue !!
Foxfold and 2 others reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
It was the socks that caused the heat when the CA reacted to it. This is why in the pen world we use it for a finish on pens and I love it. But when applying with certain towels they will get extremely warm and even start smoking so you need to take care of discarding. Acetone or nail polish remover will dissolve it. keep it covered with a clean white cloth and use burn sav on it while it heals. Good luck. Another lesson is learned and passed on.3 points -

I have been bugging my sister about sending me a picture of her and B-I-L I could cut. She found one she liked and sent it to me. Started the design process. The hardest part is getting the "light of eyes" right. I found out the bridge has to always connect in the same direction. I also had to do some modification on my B-I-L ears. I realized the the top of the ear lines up with the top of the eyebrow and the bottom of the ear with the bottom of the nose. They probably taught that in art school but I never made it there. They are coming to visit next weekend and I hope they like it.2 points

Barb and I went to the Orange County Fair yesterday and they always have a great showing by the Orange County Woodworkers and the Orange County Scroll Saw Assoc. Actually, this is how I got interested in scrolling. Four years ago I met a gentleman by the name of Ken Cowell who was doing a demonstration of marquetry on his homemade scroll saw that he operated with one foot on a treadle board. Anyway, he wasn't there yet yesterday but this table was on display. He did a masterful job on it. I hope to be able to do something like this someday. Maybe. Possibly. If I live long enough.2 points

Ouch, looks painful.. Keep a close eye on that.. as the others said specifically burns are bad for getting infection.. Praying for a quick full recovery.. After seeing that.. I think if I ever use CA glue I'll get a hazmat suit, LOL2 points

A few years ago I was at a local car show and was impressed with a 1953 Cadillac convertible. The yellow color and all that chrome really looked great. I found my original picture and started my pixel gobbling designing. I eliminated the shadow on the front but added more lines than needed. (Started taking them out as I started cutting, things got a little thin!) Some of the reflection on the chrome threw me a little too. I always cut the text first in case I screw it up. I did! The "3" upper internal loop was a little too fancy and it fell out... Tried, but couldn't glue it back in. Started again and now have a piece for another project. Font is English 157 BT TTF. The plaque cutting is 1/8" BBPW with a 1/4" backer and is 18" x 12". Love my UPS store for enlargement/copies $1.36 for 4 on gloss card stock. Time to give the cars a rest. Working on a portrait for my sister and still have several pieces of 1/4 and 1/2" stock for boxes I need to use up.2 points

What I look forward too the most is to spend time in and on the water at our island in Lake Pivabiska. The photo that I am attaching features canoeing. There are photos of me in two of my canoes with two of my grandchildren (Isla age 4 and Ethan age 2). The scroll sawn part was designed by Timothy (with a few design changes by me). In about a month Ethan, who is now 17, and I will be going on a 5 night canoe trip.2 points -

This Charles Hand Pattern Took Some Patience
Lucky2 reacted to New to Scrollin for a topic
This took quite some time but well worth it. Charles Hand just simply makes incredible patterns. I especially like how the connection between leopard and the ground is accomplished here. It just has a great 3 D effect here. So many other patterns like this and they just don't seem life-like. Anyway, this was a blast. No straight on shots of the whole piece per Hand's request1 point -
Bearings for DW 788 Motor
OCtoolguy reacted to Brokentone for a topic
Does anyone happen to know what number bearings fit the Canada made dewalt motor? I have finally got some time to check out the scroll saw after finishing the house from the Florence storm. Motor was locked solid, disassembled and broke the bearings free. Motor runs full and slow speeds but is noisy looks like I will need to change the connecting rod bearing also. This saw was upside down in four feet of brackish water. I am hoping most of the sleeves will be ok as I had lubed them with the synthetic grease last year. I thought I was going to have to buy a Pegas but being old and cheap I need to try and fix the DW first. Bob1 point -
Baseball Ribbon Holder
Lucky2 reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
We have 2 seasons with our Grandsons. Hockey and Baseball. We have 2 Grandsons playing rep baseball all over southern Ontario and they are doing quite well. The request came for a ribbon holder for baseball only as the hockey ones are full. He is my new design. The pattern on the left is a modified Steve Good Pattern. I think they will get a kick out of their numbers and team logo. In order to hold up I use key holes. I give them instructions and the wall plugs.1 point -

I'm curious about how others do it!
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
I swore I was not going to start a topic but it seems like there is not much going on right now so, I thought, what the heck. I was just wondering how folks go about a project once you have decided to make something. Do most of you keep a stock of wood on hand or do you go out and buy for each project? I know those of you who do a lot of work on Baltic Birch keep a supple of that on hand but for those who are like me and do most of our work in hardwoods, do you keep a stock of it on hand or what? I don't have a lot of space so I'm limited to what I can keep. I'd really like to hear how others do it. I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a controversial subject. Let's just share our ideas.1 point -
I'm with you Ray. I would like to be able (afford) to attend a class on it. They have them in Cal. once in a while.. I think in San Diego.1 point

You are very welcome Stoney. He is truly a master at marquetry. I only took one of his classes and came away with a pretty good understanding of how it works.1 point

Village University Has Moved
Travis reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
Hi Travis. I signed up and will review all the lessons in time. I think I have looked at before and I find at my age I find something each time. One video that I have reviewed a number of times is the one on Intersecting Art work and I think that others may want to see this in the University too. Thanks for all the great work in this area. Don PS: I looked the original lessons from Free4all just recently too.1 point -

I did phone 111 ( our health service help line) and spoke to a medic. I ran cool water over both legs for 20 mins and then wrapped everything in clingfilm. This morning I'm fine, the clingfilm is keeping the air from it and I am in no pain. I will keep a close eye on it I promise.1 point

Sell them with nice big hot candles. When the holder burns up you can sell another. Planed obsolescence. RJF1 point -
Brenda, that looks so painful. I got burned pretty bad when I was a teenager from a steam explosion of a car radiator. It got me on my chest and under my neck and one arm. So, I know what you are feeling. I am praying you heal quickly. That burn looks like it should have a layer of Vaseline on it and a layer of gauze to keep the open air off of it.1 point

I've been using CA for years during 40 years of model railroading. But it was used in such small amounts. Every once in while I'd get things stuck to my fingers. I tried finishing pens with CA and gave that up quickly. Your foot looks painful. I hope you heal quickly and completely.1 point

CA glue is very handy but you have to be careful. Both the CA glue and accelerator can be hazardous to skin, eyes and breathing. Hope you heal quickly.1 point -

These are photos, that I have taken, and turned into puzzles. They are from Lake of the Woods, ON. We have a large cruiser boat that we can go exploring the lake with. Thsi past weekend we saw moose swimming across from one island to another, two large turtles, a buck, and watched a beaver grooming itself on a rock.1 point -

A little something different.
Lucky2 reacted to koehler788 for a topic
I took a break from the small plaques that I was doing and worked on some cornhole boards. My arm was killing me by the time I finished these. I now officially hate making these things now. So, if anyone asks me to make one for them., THEY ARE GONNA PAY A PREMIUM. I may have pushed one of them but he are the pics of the ones o have made. My son's colts boards, the vape shop I go to., and my nephew the doctor.1 point -

ChelCass reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Just got back from a long 4th of July weekend road-trip....drove from Austin Tx to Pensacola Fl, turned out to be around 11 hours going, 13 returning (hit an interstate shutdown in Lake Charles, LA, that had I-10 completely closed and all traffic routed to the I-610 bypass....took us 30 minutes to go 3/4 mile before we could exit and take back roads...through questionable parts of town...you know you're in the wrong area when the church has bars on the windows). Oceans/beaches aren't really my thing, so I probably won't do any beach-themed pieces (gimme mountains, forests...places you can go from hotel to car without dropping two pounds of water weight from the humidity...I sweated like a politician in a church with bars on the windows). For me...summer is outdoor fun, and one of my fondest memories of summer camp as a kid was trying to get the hang of archery. Now that I've discovered there's such a thing as "cross-eye dominance", where I'm right-handed but my dominant/strong eye is the left one, I'm a faaaaar better shot than I was as a kid. Our daughter is enjoying archery as well (its quieter than the gun range, for one). So we're spending a lot more time at the archery range nowadays. And summertime means we're not stuck waiting for time on the line at the indoor range, there's an outdoor range nearby as well. I may even break out the homemade blowguns again.... 1x10 scrap of whiteboard, cut with a Pegas #5 blade. Had a bit of a goof with the bowstring, I cut the inside pieces, then did the outside and my tracking was a bit off towards the left side. Got a bit closer than I'd've liked to the inner wall, which resulted in a kink/slight crack. I'll shore it up with some wood glue.1 point -
