  1. I made this box from SSW spring 2014 issue 54. I’m sure some are curious about the saw. I can’t really give a review of the saw . I just don’t have enough experience using different saws to be fair. The only other scroll saw Iv ever touched was my porter cable. Not really a fair comparison even though I love my PC. I never used an Excalibur, secco, Hegner, king, exc..... so I haven’t any benchmarks. i will say it’s seems to be a great saw of high quality. Solid, smooth, very little if any vibration. As long as it holds up I’m very satisfied and don’t see any reason to upgrade from here. Exactly what I needed.

  2. Barb and I went to the Orange County Fair yesterday and they always have a great showing by the Orange County Woodworkers and the Orange County Scroll Saw Assoc. Actually, this is how I got interested in scrolling. Four years ago I met a gentleman by the name of Ken Cowell who was doing a demonstration of marquetry on his homemade scroll saw that he operated with one foot on a treadle board. Anyway, he wasn't there yet yesterday but this table was on display. He did a masterful job on it. I hope to be able to do something like this someday. Maybe. Possibly. If I live long enough.

Didn't feel like doing much of anything today after yesterdays mishap. So I consoled myself with Elvis.

Like that scroll saw. You get your fix of gas fumes, exhaust and saw dust all at the same time...!

    Sister Portrait

I have been bugging my sister about sending me a picture of her and B-I-L I could cut. She found one she liked and sent it to me. Started the design process. The hardest part is getting the "light of eyes" right. I found out the bridge has to always connect in the same direction. I also had to do some modification on my B-I-L ears. I realized the the top of the ear lines up with the top of the eyebrow and the bottom of the ear with the bottom of the nose. They probably taught that in art school but I never made it there. They are coming to visit next weekend and I hope they like it.

  10. I went to a Steam and Power Show yesterday and they had a lot of old steam powered machinery and old gas powered engines. I saw this gas powered scroll saw and decided I had to post it. It was running on a 1 hp gas engine.

    Celtic Cross

Another project just finished. A Celtic Cross with Dragons. It is cut in Baltic Birch and finished with sanding sealer and a coat of cellulose lacquer. Hope you like it.

  14. "RUBBER" STAMP Pattern Project "Dragon Love" Thought I'd try my hand at making a rubber stamp with a logo on it, using my scroll saw. I designed the "Dragon Love" ornament and reduced it in size to about 4" I cut it out of birch plywood and made a backing for it and a handle to create a "rubber" stamp. Actually a wooden stamp to use on paper, wood or other materials. If this work out I'll make other patterns to be used for the same purpose. I bought an ink pad, but I don't think it was good enough. Seems like you would need one that is more moist. But it seemed to work after some practice. The project is easy enough to make but I made a video which you can check out on my YouTube Channel and you can also download the free pattern from there as well.

  15. After I changed the blade clamps, I had other issues and ultimately DeWalt replaced the whole saw. Started the new year with a brand new saw. Not taking it apart anytime soon. I will eventually replace the blade clamps with the Pegas clamps I have.

    Pattern Maker?

Lovely design. I really like it. I don't recommend copying it, though. Someone worked hard on that design. I'd hate if they lost a sale, or a visit to their website. I've had scrollers lift patterns from my cuttings before, too. It is really discouraging and easy to understand why we lose so many wonderful designers. Hopefully you can track down the designer to find the official pattern, or find a similar design. Or perhaps it will inspire your own design. Good luck!

  17. One thing I need to do is Make a real "Bucket List" and learn to stick with it. I get so easily sidetracked. Got to put the list of pictures I want to cut at the bottom of the list, I keep doing "one more picture" I guess because that is where I am most comfortable. Right now I am in the middle of two pictures, one on each saw... Two more pictures to add to my stack Well one is spoken for, so it is really one more to the stack.

  20. I get my domestic hardwood from my woodworking club. We have one or two sawmill days a year and dry it in a solar kiln. The wood from the club is usually below market prices. Exotic wood and Baltic Birch plywood I get at lljohnson's Workbench during their Wood Expo for the discounted price. I still have about 400bdft of quartersawn red oak leftover from my kitchen cabinet project. I guess I overestimated what I needed at least that's what I told my wife.

    Bearings for DW 788 Motor

Spend the money if you can on a new saw. I replaced all the sleeves and bearings and still had problems. if you can, buy a good one it's worth it. I put mine on a credit card and I love my new saw.

  28. Many Thanks to All, Yes I could use the bearing list. I should have measured the bearings when I had the motor apart. I put it back together to test the circuit board, switch, potentiometer and motor to determine whether to scrap it or not. Ray that looks to be the motor bearings. May also need some sleeve and needle bearings. Bob

  30. There is a great tractor/steam power museum in Vista Ca. and they have an open house twice a year. I try to attend one if them every year. I am fascinated by the old equipment. The one that really got me was/is a motorized rope maker. They always set it up with 8-12 different colored threads and as the head rotates there is a collection of threads going down a hole in the center as braided rope. It's mesmerizing. As my wife will verify. She always has to drag me away from it.

  31. I made a post several years back on all the bearing sizes etc one needs to replace all the bearings... That said though... I didn't give the bearing sizes for the actual motor... I never had a need to replace those..

  32. I have a list of all the bearings required that someone here (I think) passed on to me. I would have to find it & scan it again if you would like me to send it to you.

  33. Bearings in Canada are not cheap! I went looking last year for the bearings in the blade holder. Bought the Pegas clamps instead because it was only a few dollars more than all the replacement bearings.

  50. OK let me get this straight. Bake for 3 hours in a 250 degree oven. Do you brush on a sauce before you put it in or during baking? and what side of wood do you serve on the side? Have a recommendation of a wine that would go with this? RJF
