    Plaques

These are the last of these football plaques I have been working on. All the same half inch pine backs with 3mm ply fronts and some with white cardboard inserts. All the patterns are by Bobby @scrollriffic.

    O Holy Night

Pattern by Sue Mey from issue #69, Winter 2017 of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts. Backer is 1” Black Walnut. The stable is 1/2” Poplar. Joseph and Mary are Cherry. The Donkey is Mahogany. The Shepherd is Beach and the lamb is Poplar. Cut with Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse blades ranging from #1 to a #9. Soaked in a 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. After 24 hours, top coated with Deft semi gloss spray lacquer. All of the pieces in the two sets I cut were cut from scrap Hardwoods.

    Shrink Wrap

This isn't about cutting, it's about storing. When you don't have room to go out you have to go up.I've been cutting kids puzzles to give away to children in the neighborhood. Young families are moving in and there are more young children. Also use them at Christmas as toys for tots. Puzzles are simple and quick to cut so I do them between other projects. How to store them is the problem. I found 100 shrink bags on ebay for $4.99 including shipping. Got them after about six weeks. Normal from China. I shrunk the bags with the puzzles with a small hair drier. Now I can stack the puzzles. Cheap and easy.

  8. I made this box from SSW spring 2014 issue 54. I’m sure some are curious about the saw. I can’t really give a review of the saw . I just don’t have enough experience using different saws to be fair. The only other scroll saw Iv ever touched was my porter cable. Not really a fair comparison even though I love my PC. I never used an Excalibur, secco, Hegner, king, exc..... so I haven’t any benchmarks. i will say it’s seems to be a great saw of high quality. Solid, smooth, very little if any vibration. As long as it holds up I’m very satisfied and don’t see any reason to upgrade from here. Exactly what I needed.

    Shrink Wrap

I have used shrink wrap since I started making puzzles for the kids. When I do, I enclose a zip top baggie large enough to hold the puzzle pieces after they are opened so none get lost. Thank you for sharing with the Toys for Tots program. It has been a large part of my life for the past 20 years. I make puzzles, games & toys (especially pocket cars) and give them out every Christmas. I even impersonate Mrs Clause in the months of November and December. It is great fun for me and the kiddos.

  14. "RUBBER" STAMP Pattern Project "Dragon Love" Thought I'd try my hand at making a rubber stamp with a logo on it, using my scroll saw. I designed the "Dragon Love" ornament and reduced it in size to about 4" I cut it out of birch plywood and made a backing for it and a handle to create a "rubber" stamp. Actually a wooden stamp to use on paper, wood or other materials. If this work out I'll make other patterns to be used for the same purpose. I bought an ink pad, but I don't think it was good enough. Seems like you would need one that is more moist. But it seemed to work after some practice. The project is easy enough to make but I made a video which you can check out on my YouTube Channel and you can also download the free pattern from there as well.

    Sister Portrait

I have been bugging my sister about sending me a picture of her and B-I-L I could cut. She found one she liked and sent it to me. Started the design process. The hardest part is getting the "light of eyes" right. I found out the bridge has to always connect in the same direction. I also had to do some modification on my B-I-L ears. I realized the the top of the ear lines up with the top of the eyebrow and the bottom of the ear with the bottom of the nose. They probably taught that in art school but I never made it there. They are coming to visit next weekend and I hope they like it.

    NHL/MLB Logos

Hi All First post showing some recent work here. Since we are a large sport loving family outside of Philly, and since I just started back with scrollsawing, here are a couple of my recent projects. Why a Bruins logo you may ask? Because I am a huge Bruins fan since I was very young (My kids hate me for it!! LOL) (These are just to hang in my office and not for sale) Any feedback would be greatly appreciated Thank you Ed

  19. I got my HP Laserjet 4 at a tag sale about 12 years ago. It was used, but seemed to be all there and for $10 I decided that it was worth the gamble. I think I've gone through about 20 toner cartridges since getting it. I buy the recycled cartridges 2 at a time when I need more from whatever source offers the best price through Amazon. It doesn't do color, but the 600 dpi capability makes nice fine black lines for scroll sawing. If I need color I use one of my Epson or HP inkjet photo printers. Copier and Laser printers use toner that is actually fine pieces of hard black wax. It melts when heated and that is how it is applied to the paper. I have used this feature to iron my pattern onto the wood by printing a mirror image of the pattern on the laser printer (if mirroring is necessary) and then I attach the image face down to my wood, using a strip of tape to act as a hinge along one edge. I then use a hot clothes iron on the back (unprinted) side of the paper to melt the toner and transfer the image onto the wood. The hinge capability of the taped edge gives you the ability to inspect the transfer without losing the position. It helps to set the laser printer for the darkest line. Charley

    Another sign

Nice sign. I've been using marine spar varnish for dog patterns I put up at our dog park. Using spar varnish on poplar, is the only finish I've found that can withstand the 115 degree sun and the monsoon rains. Plus I really like the amber tone I get. My father-in-law played for the Blue Bombers. His wife was from Winnipeg.

I use shrink wrap for puzzles also. It can become borderline addictive. Kinda Zen like. It's amazing how tight and wrinkle free you can get it. lol

    Shrink Wrap

I pick up a box of food storage bags at the local market 10" x 14" and use these for puzzles and other projects that fall apart. I put the puzzle in and then hit it with the heat gun I picked up at Harbor Freight. Seems to do a pretty good job shrinking the plastic.

Nice find, Rocky, I probably would have just used Sarah wrap (that's just a plastic food wrap that clings to itself if readers in the UK don't have it there) but, your storage bags are a lot more professional. God Bless ! Spirithorse

  29. I suggest taking the saw apart and inspecting the bearings and sleeves. THEN order only what is needed. Had I ordered a complete set of brgs/sleeves, I'd have wasted a huge chunk of change. Luckily, my saw had not seen much hard use so nothing was badly worn. Inspect first unless you have too much money.

    Pattern Maker?

Travis, I contacted the seller of this work on eBay to see if they had the pattern or could send me to the designer/cutter/creator. They told me that they only sell the finished products and all the rights and licenses belong to the creators. They told me that they get the finished works from an outfit in Texas by the name of "The Handcrafted of Houston". So, I found their website to see if I could get some info and they won't even talk to me unless I can produce a retail tax number and send them a photocopy of my license. Not friendly at all. I just wanted to ask a question. Anyway, that's where it stands for now. I would say that if we want to just do a cutting for our own use, so be it. Tough Noogies!

  36. We have 2 seasons with our Grandsons. Hockey and Baseball. We have 2 Grandsons playing rep baseball all over southern Ontario and they are doing quite well. The request came for a ribbon holder for baseball only as the hockey ones are full. He is my new design. The pattern on the left is a modified Steve Good Pattern. I think they will get a kick out of their numbers and team logo. In order to hold up I use key holes. I give them instructions and the wall plugs.

    Gas Powered Scroll Saw

Just think about being able to take this saw out in the pasture on a hot day and setting up under the shade of an old oak tree. No need to worry about exhaust or dust control. Just the curious cows. Wow!
