  1. So the end of term is upon us again and my lad wanted me to make something for his teacher and shown me a picture of something that he liked that holds a bar of chocolate and this is the end result.

  2. Well I finally got something off the saw. With table saw upgrades, some jigs to work on, outside work, I have only spent a hour or so a day a few days a week on the saw. But I have this one cut and have another picture I have been working on for my son about 1/2 cut. This a Charles Hand pattern. I did the Ornate tiger, this one seemed to go slower for some reason,, not more difficult. I like having these on a saw. I enjoy cutting them. The next one will be the ornate howl.

    A dog and Puzzles

I had to find a birthday present for good friends 80th Birthday, she has 2 King Charles Cavaliers. After a bit of hunting I found a pattern by Sue Mey of a key/leash rack. She loved it. 4 tray more puzzles. The number one I scanned from an old book a long time ago, the Plane picture I got from a colouring book and just divided it into pieces.

  7. So a motorcycle asked to be make and paint him 1 of my motorcycles in Fluorescent Orange. This is made out of 3/4" Poplar with one coat of Florescent Red-Orange paint on it. Wow it's bright. Just a fair warning "please get your sunglasses". This is a Steve Good pattern. Thanks Jim

    Watching

Watching Apollo 11 In the news lately there has been a lot about the Apollo 11 landing on the moon and the attempted assault on Area 51. So I thought I'd combine both ideas into a little sign with a little twist I call "Watching Apollo 11" I don't know if there is anything "out there" but we do know the Americans were the first to land on the moon. Might make a nice gift for a 51 fanatic or any space explorer. Download the free pattern from my Free Pattern Page:

If you are close enough to a sawmill you can get a carload of free "first cut" slabs that re great as backing for scrollers. When a sawmill gets a log they cut 4 sides to square up the log before cutting into studs. They are "scrap" for them. Just ask. John Old Dust

I bought a $100 rust bucket. I forgot how small 14" is. However, seeing it run I bought it. It has some rust that I can remove. The tension knob at the back is broken but I can replace it or make a new one. It is variable speed and runs smooth as silk through the entire range. I don't think I would sell yet. It is a cute little bugger. I can perhaps use it as a decorator piece in our picture window. I have pictures but I can't get them to load for some reason. I put them in a photo editor before posting but I can't get them into the editor. I'll work on it and post photos later.

If anyone is looking for a challenge, here it is! I think there was 2 million pilot holes, give or take a million, at least it felt like it was that many! It is a great pattern, but it is a tough one to cut. This was made for a friend to raffle off to raise money for the national wildlife turkey federation. I left the plastic on the frame for shipping.

Well, now you have me looking for a tiny Hegner. We have a window that needs something. If I come across one, I'll snatch it up. Good luck with yours. Lots of info and help if you need it at Advanced Machinery. Wolfgang is very responsive if you email him with questions. Parts are readily available too. Expensive though.

If you have a FB page Mel just type in Custom Wood Portraits in the search line and it will come up. He has some fabulous patterns but you may have to search through his posts or on the left hand side of the page click on 'Photos'. they are all there, just not in any particular order.

Congrats on the new to you saw!! I had the opportunity to grab one of the 14" Hegners for $70 on a stand last year but my brain wasn't working correctly and I passed on it.. mainly because of the single speed and no up front blade release.. I do wish i'd have grabbed it now.. They did give me all the blades and a box of parts.. that turned out to be bunch of big blades I'd never use.. and the parts were Hegner blade clamps and the rear tension springs things.. I gave the blades away but still have all those blade clamps and odd parts box.. I'm gonna try me a Hegner some day..

  29. Any teacher will love it. Might suggest that you either give her extra bars of chocolate to replace as eaten, or just suggest she keep the wrapper and replace it back in after eating the chocolate.

  34. Thanks JIm, I was thinking that if I just glued a photo to some wood then cut it that I might rip the paper. But, with dried laquer over the paper, it should work OK. But I doubt that I will cutting freehand; rather I will search for a puzzle pieces pattern, attach it to the back, and cut the puzzle that way.

  35. Very nice! Assembling puzzles at Pellow's Island is a long established pastime. Seeing what you did makes me want to do something similar. Just how did you go about making the puzzles?

  38. These are photos, that I have taken, and turned into puzzles. They are from Lake of the Woods, ON. We have a large cruiser boat that we can go exploring the lake with. Thsi past weekend we saw moose swimming across from one island to another, two large turtles, a buck, and watched a beaver grooming itself on a rock.

  39. Just got back from a long 4th of July weekend road-trip....drove from Austin Tx to Pensacola Fl, turned out to be around 11 hours going, 13 returning (hit an interstate shutdown in Lake Charles, LA, that had I-10 completely closed and all traffic routed to the I-610 bypass....took us 30 minutes to go 3/4 mile before we could exit and take back roads...through questionable parts of town...you know you're in the wrong area when the church has bars on the windows). Oceans/beaches aren't really my thing, so I probably won't do any beach-themed pieces (gimme mountains, forests...places you can go from hotel to car without dropping two pounds of water weight from the humidity...I sweated like a politician in a church with bars on the windows). For me...summer is outdoor fun, and one of my fondest memories of summer camp as a kid was trying to get the hang of archery. Now that I've discovered there's such a thing as "cross-eye dominance", where I'm right-handed but my dominant/strong eye is the left one, I'm a faaaaar better shot than I was as a kid. Our daughter is enjoying archery as well (its quieter than the gun range, for one). So we're spending a lot more time at the archery range nowadays. And summertime means we're not stuck waiting for time on the line at the indoor range, there's an outdoor range nearby as well. I may even break out the homemade blowguns again.... 1x10 scrap of whiteboard, cut with a Pegas #5 blade. Had a bit of a goof with the bowstring, I cut the inside pieces, then did the outside and my tracking was a bit off towards the left side. Got a bit closer than I'd've liked to the inner wall, which resulted in a kink/slight crack. I'll shore it up with some wood glue.
