  1. I own one of the purple Excalibur saws manufactured about 20 years ago. That's when these saws were still being made by Sommerville in Pickering Ontario Canada. It's been a great saw but, for the last year or so, the clamping mechanism has been acting up. I tried fixing things with the Quick Clamp Renewal Kit from Seyco but that did not help much. I finally decided to try the (expensive) Clamp Replacement Kit from Pegas: In the photo, the kit is still in the box and the upper clamp mechanism has been removed and is sitting on the left hand side of the table. The kit comes with no instructions, but it turned out to be quite easy to install. My only difficulty was removing the old clamp mechanism beneath the table because it had sort of "glued" itself into place. The Pegas clamps are a joy to use. They are better than original clamps ever were.

Jim has it right. It is a matter of just getting used to a type of blade. I am just the opposite. I love Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse but had all sort of issues controlling Pegas MG blades. It is worthwhile looking at Steve Goods videos and technique on cutting curves and circles. It is video 7. http://www.stevedgood.com/school/sss.html

    Take A Hike

Hiking is good exercise, whether you are going miles and miles or just for a walk around the neighborhood. Lots of people indulge in this activity so a sign cut from wood might make them very happy. Download the free pattern from my Free Pattern Page: http://baggetta.com/pebooks/puzzle_patterns.htm

  9. I may have to look for another excaliber style saw if I decide to do this a lot, right now I like it more than fretwork. The angle of the bevel cut is the issue, I would love to set one saw to the perfect angle and leave it. Of course the perfect angle is another issue. The graduations at the bottom of the ex for tilt are not defined enough to reset it accurately each time. I ordered an angle meter, it came in the mail last night, so over the next few days I will work with it. tips? stack cut the bottom and top I went to mitered corners cause I could not keep the rounded ones identical with the sanding, those rounded corners drove me nuts on the first three boxes. cut the wall piece, then use that to make the cut pattern on the locator piece you will glue to the top piece so it sits well on top I am such a skinflint, as Dad would say. I have the cutout pieces of inlay from the tops sitting around trying to figure out what to do with them, and also the center of the wall cutouts too

Just some of Steve Good patterns I made this weekend. I’ve made the baskets before so I may be repeating myself. The other are cell phone holders. Guess I should clean up my mess before I take pictures.

  16. I don't know that there is that much difference in them Kevin. Unless you have an EX that was made in China. Mine was made in Canada and I can't imagine that Pegas has done anything other than the clamps to improve it. I do like the paint job but not enough to spend $700 on it. My saw couldn't be much better since I upgraded the the clamps. I love it.

    Curves

To answer your question, no there is not. As stated al blades cut curves, the larger the blade the less tight the radius of the curve can be. It really is a matter of practice and finding the blade/size you like and can control. As an example I can not control a flying dutchman #3, but I love the pegas modified geometry #3

Hi Chris: The thickness of the wood and blade size plays a big part in trying to do what you want If you Google Scroll saw blade chart, you will see what blade is recommended for what thickness wood Dan is right when he said this is what a scroll saw is suppose to excel in There are different brands of scroll saw blades and depending on who you talk to/with you will get all kinds of feedback both good and bad - So a little more info on what your trying to do would help us answer your questions Hope this helps you Fab4

I ordered the quick clamp from Hegner Saturday evening which means I have to wait until Wednesday or Thursday. Last night I just made a temporary clamp. It works perfect and was too late to cancel the order. So today I gave the saw it's first taste of cutting.

  36. Kevin, I know how lending stuff can go pear shaped pretty quick. I have a rule I"ll never lend cash, my car or tools. The 1st 2 can be over ridden by immediate family I will never borrow anything either after an experience I had many years ago. I borrowed mates belt sander, well it broke, so I bought him a new one. If I'd just bought the new one myself I'd of had a sander and no embarrassment. Lesson learnt

  37. Allow me to introduce myself. I’m AJ from Cincy and I just joined the Village. I’ve been a scroller in a sense for many years, although it’s more for practical purposes than decorative ones. Most of what I do is cutting out forms for carving and woodworking projects, although there are occasional small fretwork jobs like simple Christmas ornaments. I just found this forum through a reference on another woodworking forum (Sawmill Creek). I am always looking for ideas for projects, tips on improving my skills, and just seeing what other people are doing. As a retired school teacher, I miss the creative parts of classroom life and all the other school “hats” I wore. I never had the time for the woodworking arts, so now my creative appetite gets filled with the touch and smell of wood. I’m looking forward to new vistas hanging around the Village from time to time. Sincerely, - aj43
