Busy Weekend
barb.j.enders and one other reacted to bcdennis for a topic
Got these done this weekend. All Sue Mey designs, well mostly. The first one is a combination of her Fishing and Hunting Crosses I call the Sportsman cross. The 2nd is her Mother Cross but I take the word "Mom" off of it for just an angle cross. The last is her Nature cross. All 3 are out of 3/4 inch Poplar.2 points -

Tractor pattern
amazingkevin reacted to rjR for a topic
Made from 1/4" plywood and some shop scrap--cedar I think, fence rescued for sure. About 8 inches tall and 11 inches long. Pattern supplied by Birchbark, slightly modified by rjR. The Tractor is a "Friday" Brand and very rare. The customer has seen a picture of it and loved it. So, I dared to then post it here. Background has a very slight torching added. Coated with a quick coat of spray poly. When I cut things like this I always try to make a template at the same time. I stacked 3; with the template and the P-C saw did excellently!1 point -
Next week they are opening a Hobby Lobby near my area, would it be worth the trip , and has anyone bought from them. Just curious1 point

Curves
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to crupiea for a topic
Got to thinking about this topic today. Following the curve also has to do a lot with the speed you saw at. I am a big fan of very very slow speeds. I like to feel the saw cutting into the wood. if you go really fast, it will just sort of float through and the grains in the wood will sort if just move the wood along. Going slow teaches you what it should feel like. Does for me anyway,1 point -
Magnifying Lights
scrollingforsanity reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
I have two lamps one for each saw. I bought the H/F lamp and I like it. I did the LED upgrade that Kevin did and bought the same bulb that he suggested. It works great. I also bought the $25/free shipping lamp that Rockytime found on eBay and it already had the LED in it. It also works great. I have not found a problem with either one as far as lens quality/power/clarity goes. I wear progressive lens glasses and make sure to get the lamp situated in the right spot before I start cutting. They are adjustable you know.1 point -
Magnifying Lights
scrollingforsanity reacted to teachnlearn for a topic
The cost of the magnifiers cost is the quality of the lens material and the quality of the manufacturing of the lens magnification or polishing. Lens can be a cheap molded plastic to create the magnification shape. As the cost increases you will find clear glass that is ground and polished to create the magnification. When I was designing circuits for companies I had a bench that had a scientific magnifier. The magnification was crystal clear. I was able to find micro cracks in the cooper circuit or poor soldering on small parts. Also came with a mag camera with a flat screen to boot. Really cheap ones may distort the object. Like looking through water and not being able to grab the object. If possible bring photographs and check the magnifier. The magnification should be clear and crisp. If you decide on one because its cheap, the downside maybe your eyes will quickly tire. Its like getting a pair of glasses with the wrong script. Most people have a level of what they can afford. As I get older and having some disabilities along with my wife having the same; We find it helps to save a little more for devices that have a bit better build. We have extension grippers and the cheap ones don't grab. Cheap tub and shower bars that fall off the wall. After a round of buying things that aid or adapt for us we now save and buy a couple levels above cheap. We decided to buy equipment that will work properly and not hurt us. For magnifiers your adapting your eyes to assist or aid to see smaller things. Your buying adaptions for your eyes. If you find what you want and you find yourself tiring quickly or getting headaches, it could be the magnifier is doing that. Just like a pair of glasses that aren't made for you. Problem with Amazon and other online orders is there is no hands on trying. Just finding out after you get it. By the way, there was a thread on where the magnifier was attached. Some people had trouble with vibration from the saw when the magnifier was clamped to the table. So the discussion went on about adapting where to clamp or creating or buying floor stands. Hi to all who live on the Western side of the Mississippi River. I made up an order of woods that I needed and submitted it to Cherokee Wood Products a couple of days ago. I decided to make the 2 hour round trip to go see the operation and actually meet Chris. I'm sure glad I did. He is a great young man and it was a pleasure to meet him. He showed me around the entire yard. They have been there for 25 years and it's a great place. Lots to see. Anyway, for making the trip out there, he gifted me some of the stuff that they can't sell. I came home with a load of great wood. They also have boxes of cutoffs that they sell. I highly recommend that you folks give them a try. And if you do, take the time to try to get hold of Chris and give him your order. Especially if you need any custom milling. I needed a piece of walnut in 3/8" thickness. They don't offer it but they milled it for me for a minimal charge. I now have enough wood that I won't need to go back for a good while but when the time comes, I'll be hot-footing it back out there once again. Cherokeewood.com1 point -

The foam poster board stuff makes for great backings for larger pieces of fretwork. Light and all one color. I usually use baltic birch but this stuff obviously is way cheaper.1 point

It might be a chore finding a regular priced item.. This is one of those stores that almost everything is marked way up and then they make you "feel" like you're getting an awesome deal because it's 20-60% off LOL.. Then they put out this 40% coupon and get people to come shop through the store for a " regular priced item " along the way looking for the regular priced item you find 5 things on sale you just gotta buy, LOL I like Hobby Lobby.. but I don't really buy much from them.. as Jim said sometimes a walk through the store will spark some ideas..1 point

Magnifying Lights
kmmcrafts reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Without getting into the electronics of this but if the package or bulb does not say it is dimmable than it is not. Do not do it. It has to do with the drivers feeding the leds and the pulses it allows. Like I said i will not go into this because most will not understand. Also those leds that say are dimmable are to a point. They will dim a bulb to about 90% and then you see the wave lengths and add the ac current which pulsates and if the voltage is low then it is even more prominent. The light output is not that great when dimmed. You are better off either getting different color tones or adding filters to change light output.1 point -

Hobby Lobby
OCtoolguy reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Depends on what you are looking for. They have alot of China made stuff. As far as supplies there are better places to shop but do carry most of everything. Not sure what a scroller would want to buy there. The BB is expensive as is other hobby stores. Paints and glues are high also. I have bought a few specialty things such as brass tubes or plating because I needed right away. But if you need right away then that is where they excel.1 point -
Curves
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to JimErn for a topic
To answer your question, no there is not. As stated al blades cut curves, the larger the blade the less tight the radius of the curve can be. It really is a matter of practice and finding the blade/size you like and can control. As an example I can not control a flying dutchman #3, but I love the pegas modified geometry #31 point -
