50th Anniversry Plaque
amazingkevin and 6 others reacted to Frank Pellow for a topic
I made this for friends who will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in November. Pauline and Dave are very musical and have been members of the best choirs (both classical and barbershop) in Canada. In Dave's case, it's the best in the world since his choir won the World Barbershop championship about three years ago. The word design comes from Keith Fenton and the music on each side is my modification of a Steve Good design. The dark wood is Roasted Ontario Hard Maple and the light wood is Padauk.7 points -

Yes, it seems fair because it’s not just gluing them up, it’s cutting them out, sanding before or after, applying the finish and more. I have looked at these in various places, $10 is about half or less of what I see them selling for. Denny said he is selling them for $15 and they are selling. Sometimes you make more on some things then others which helps to balance out the books at the end. There are plenty of things sold for alot more then the “cost” to make them. I see nothing wrong with charging what the market will pay and I think most would think $10 was still a “deal.”4 points -
I just acquired another Hegner this evening. A Maxicut 18. It was advertised on "Letgo." A friend pointed it out to me Sunday. The seller said to see him on Monday after 5PM. I texted him for an address but never received an answer.Tuesday evening I texted him again and asked, "If still available I'm still interested." He returned the text and said he would be home this evening. I found him in a mobile home park. Very nice park but his back yard looked like Sanford and son. I walk with a cane and I had a terrible time getting into the back yard. I was expecting a rust bucket but was pleasantly surprised. Everything is in great shape except the exposed steel parts. I can take care of that tomorrow. Great buy at $300.3 points

@Scrappile I have a couple of quality 1/4" chucks from an old drill. I have screwed a bolt with the head cut of into the chuck and chuck that in my drill press. I keep the 1mm and another smaller bit chucked in them. Makes it easy. I'm a bit of a hoarder (You never know when it's going to come in handy) so have 1/2 doz chucks or more which I have taken of various drills that have given up the ghost over the years.3 points

I use a 1/16" or a #63 wherever I can in fret work and then I go to smaller bits as needed. I don't try to drill based on blade size, I base it more on what drill bit will work in the area I need a hole. I figure the larger the hole the easier to get the blade through... I use bits 1/16" down to #70. I have also found I like the bits D and D sells the best so far. I love the Flying Dutchman blades but not the bits Mike's Workshop sells or use to. 1/2 of the ones I got wobbled so much they were unuseable. Another thing I found is I bought a little chuck to put in my drill press for the mini bits (that drill press chuck did not close all the way). That mini chuck wobbled so bad it was useless. The drill press I have now closes all the way and if it didn't, I would be looking to replace the chuck with one that did. To me if you do a lot of fretwork scrolling which means lot of drilling, might as well fork out the $ for a good chuck.3 points

No. In order to do it correctly, you're supposed to have 3 drill presses.3 points -

Based on you pictures it looks like western red cedar. I think it is also called Giant Cedar or Pacific Cedar. Western red cedar can vary in color from almost white to almost as dark as walnut. In fact I took a beginners intarsia class from Judy Gale Roberts and that was all we used. Look at the colors on this. Except for the eye ball it is all western red cedar.2 points -

Any of the fruit woods, such as apple, would be good. I just made my great granddaughter a rattle out of cherry. Just be careful of the finish you put on it. Although they really don't need to be finished, I do anyway, just to keep it a little cleaner looking. If you do finish it, let it sit for at least a week to be sure all the solvents have evaporated.2 points

Pegas balde holders

Bought a set for my Seyco saw quite some time back. I would not go back to the stock clamps, for me these are much better. Did get rid of some of my minimal vibration. I will be putting a set on my EX this fall. They are a bit expensive but well worth the money if you saw a lot.2 points -

Pine is too soft. I would use poplar or hard Maple.2 points -
Lets see..., at making ten per hour at $10 each would mean $100 per hour to glue a few pieces of wood together... Sound fair?2 points
-
I have them on my Seyco which is an Ex almost. I like them, I did not experience any miracles when I put them on. No reduction of vibrations, but they are nice, not sorry I put them on and the original clamps that came with my Seyco seem big and cumbersome when I look at them once and awhile. Are they worth the extra bucks... that is up to the person that has them. They didn't improve my scrolling and I still put a blade in upside down or backwards ever so often. I don't have any desire to go back to the old ones. Would if I had to though.2 points

Blade thickness
SCROLLSAW703 and one other reacted to Rockytime for a topic
I've been using a #68 for nearly everything. It is seldom that I use anything larger than a #5 blade. But then I cut very few things greater than 3/4". Others may have different needs.2 points -
Jim, thanks for sharing. I understand about the low income and low cost of living BUT since you are just starting to offer them, try the $10 each first and see how they sell. If they don’t right away, you can then drop your price. While I know you sell what little you do sell to pay for your hobby and the wood for the projects, $10 is still a steal of a deal and I would think no one question that price.2 points

I do the same as Bill. I have each drill bit chucked up in their own mini drill chuck so they are always ready to go.2 points -

Delta on sale
OCtoolguy reacted to Brokentone for a topic
I installed new bearings in my Dewalt saw motor that had been submerged, greased all the saw bearings and it ran like new for about 3 hours. Then it started to hesitate and stop/start. Decided it is finished and started to search for new saw. I ordered a Delta from Home depot on sale for $299, I had been planning to buy a Pegas but at my age (80) I could not justify the $500 difference. I also had been looking for used Hawk or Hegner but nothing available anywhere near here. Bob1 point -

I myself am working on that... I want one chucked up with my 1-3/8 forstner bit. can't tell you how many times a day / week that I'm swapping out the mini chuck to the forstner bit.. then back to the mini chuck.. I've been saying for a couple years that I want at least two more drill press's.. Wouldn't mind a press set up with a sanding mop too.. LOL1 point -

Could be Poplar. Yes it got past quality control 1" in the rough is about 1-1/8" thick. S4S or S2S dressed lumber or dimensional lumber is 3/4"1 point -
I had to stop for one recently, he was crossing the road, very slowly. I have seen about 6 or 7 now. Marg1 point

I have them on my Ex21. I thought the price was a bit steep, but one of the original clamps had stripped so I bit the bullet. Although they work exactly the same way as the originals, they seem more positive. I wouldn't change back.1 point

@don watson Don, I never worry about the drill bit size. I find that 1/16" (1mm) suffices for 95% of the time. I do have a few sizes of the Micro (Numbered) bits but only need them rarely. The other advantage of using larger bits is I can find the hole to thread the blade through1 point
