    Another Hegner

I just acquired another Hegner this evening. A Maxicut 18. It was advertised on "Letgo." A friend pointed it out to me Sunday. The seller said to see him on Monday after 5PM. I texted him for an address but never received an answer.Tuesday evening I texted him again and asked, "If still available I'm still interested." He returned the text and said he would be home this evening. I found him in a mobile home park. Very nice park but his back yard looked like Sanford and son. I walk with a cane and I had a terrible time getting into the back yard. I was expecting a rust bucket but was pleasantly surprised. Everything is in great shape except the exposed steel parts. I can take care of that tomorrow. Great buy at $300.

  8. If my memory is correct there is a thread devoted to pictures of workshops. I can't seem to find it but I'll bet Admin can. You may want to just look through them, I remember lots of posts there. It's a great way to pic up ideas and you can always PM someone if you have a question about their space, layout or equipment. I've had a shop since 1979. I find that they are similar to 'living organisms'. They keep evolving with new equipment, new types of woodworking projects and changes in you skills and abilities.

    Another Hegner

The Hawk was on Facebook marketplace.. guy ordered it back in 1998 and then had a stroke and could no longer saw.. The saw sat in a climate controlled shop from 1998 - when I bought it in 2017.. The Excalibur was on craigslist and the young man that sold it to me won it in a raffle from his work Christmas party.. He had no interest in it.. Both saws was still sealed in the box.. The Hawk was about 15 miles away but the Excalibur was out of state.. however the guy with the Excalibur was right near the state line and had family here.. so we met half way.. which was about 40 miles..

    Another Hegner

I've tried that method now for several years.. I had a DeWalt.. then with it getting worn and wanting a higher end saw I thought I'd buy either another main saw and use the DW as a back-up or buy a back-up for the DW.. Bought the first Hawk 220vS.. figured $100 I'd at least get a feel for the Hawk saws.. Then i liked it so well that when I seen a deal on the still boxed 1998 226 Hawk ultra for $400 well I had to go get it.. with intentions of selling the older Hawk or the DW.. Then I found a still in box Excalibur for $350.. bought it with intention of selling the DW.. Somehow I talked myself into a brand new Hawk with intentions of selling all the saws but the Hawk Ultra.. out of all that mess.. I only sold the DW,.. I find I like all these saws for certain types of cutting.. I still may sell that older Hawk 220VS before winter..

    Another Hegner

That's a dilemma Ray. The 18" Hegner has turned out to be in literal perfect condition. The rust was only very light surface rust. Brass bristles on the Dremel removed all of it. The only thing missing was the table insert which I ordered last night. The Hegner is such a nice heavy machine and the Hawk is set up just perfectly for me and is smooth. I think the 14" will have to go. Hard to do since it works so great. The Hawk has the nice big table and the Hegner works so well too.

  16. This is an older one, but I have cut this into a very difficult puzzle before. Printed it 11X14 and sold it in a quart canning jar and called it "A Quart of Peppers". The other was shot the same day, but I have yet to puzzle it.

So this is my first time cutting this pattern. The whiskers are so easy to break. I'm thinking on my next go around I will make them just a little bit wider. I still need to sand and paint or stain this one. This is cut out of 3/4" Poplar and is a Steve Good pattern. Thanks for looking. Jim

  19. I made this for friends who will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in November. Pauline and Dave are very musical and have been members of the best choirs (both classical and barbershop) in Canada. In Dave's case, it's the best in the world since his choir won the World Barbershop championship about three years ago. The word design comes from Keith Fenton and the music on each side is my modification of a Steve Good design. The dark wood is Roasted Ontario Hard Maple and the light wood is Padauk.

  20. Today I went back on my saw, having been nowhere near it since July 12th, my 'foot injury' day. I'd found a pattern I'd really like to cut. It was a day of 'mishaps' on my saw. Firstly, I realised that the pattern wouldn't suit my normal go to blade, #3 so I tried with a smaller blade #2. This proved a tad problematic as I found that it tended to drift a little and it took me ages to feel reasonably comfortable with it. I persevered and got almost to the end of this pattern although it took me most of the day, only to totally mess up, beyond redemption !!!!! I must say that although I was so, so cross with myself for making such a stupid mistake, it really was the prettiest piece of firewood that I've done to date.

    Peeling the pattern

Ditto what Paul said, except a fingernail works as well as an x-acto knife and there is little chance of gouging the wood

    Peeling the pattern

How did you put it on? Spray adhesive and stuck to the wood or did you put blue painters tape on first. If it is glued directly to the wood with a spray on adhesive, wipe it down with mineral Spirits and is should lift right off. If I use the painters tape, I use a flat end X-acto blade to work it up.

The 14" Hegner is a terrific little saw. However, cosmetically it is pretty scratched up. The 18" is in beautiful condition just missing the table insert which I ordered last night. I don't have room for three saws so I'll have to think about this.

    work shop layout???

Layout a work shop? That would imply it was empty to start with, in my case when I move if there is a work shop, that is where everything goes that does not have a specific place. Then it gets weeded out, and what is left, piled here and there, is placed in the nearest empty spot. My shop shares woodworking with harley parts and tools, and ..... Layout a shop - what an interesting idea ROFL

  49. I'll kick this one off. Most folks I talk to always gush about beach vacations, cruises, sand and palm trees, Hawaii.....they can have em. Send me to the mountains! Forests, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, the peace and quiet of a shady trail with nothing but the sound of the wind to disturb the afternoon (and the occasional curse as my clumsy ass trips over a root). My wife is of the same mind, although she enjoys the beaches more than I do. Thus a Steve Good pattern, not quite finished yet (I'm juggling three or four projects at the time), but still....is mountains. Is good.

  50. Kevin I wish we lived closer. I could show you first hand and with product in hand the differences. First I think we discussed this before but the basics are. Linseed oil is a product that is seldom used in finishing because it really does not dry. Boiled linseed oil is derivative of this but is a thin down version and a mix of agents such as driers so that it will absorb well into the wood as does linseed oil but will cure faster. Tung oil is basically the same thing but comes from a different plant. Linseed oil is similar to flaxseed oil but not drinkable. Now Danish oil is basically BLO but has polyurethane added to give it somewhat a tougher finish and a small sheen. They have driers in them to help dry faster but with all finishes, dry does not mean cured. That takes different times due to weather conditions in your drying area such as humidity and temps. With these finishes usually one coat is all that is needed because no more will be absorbed and you are just laying it on and sometimes it cures in puddles and not a good look or feel. All these products can be top coated with poly or lacquer to give the protection and shine you desire and that is up to you. I always prefer lacquer over poly because withlaquer you are not building layers as you do with poly, but rather are making a thicker layer and the depth looks deeper . I rarely use poly. I basically use poly if it is an outdoor piece or something that needs a stronger protection. Lacquer does not dry as hard as poly. Lacquer is a finish that is more forgiving and easier to repair. Now most furniture people use lacquers but it is not the same as we use and their finish is tougher. Now the old saying is do not mix finishes and it is true. But with Danish oil the amount of poly is small so it will not affect anything if you top coat with lacquer. I have done it many times but again making sure the piece is cured and not just dried. I like the look of satin lacquers on many projects or will go to gloss. I never use semigloss because it is a look that is in between and shows you did not make a commitment. Again this is a personal choice thing. That clock is a wall hanger from what I can tell and will not get abused from touching all the time so any finish will do. Most my projects I sell are finished with Watco Danish oil and then are top coated with watco satin wax. Again I mentioned this before the look and feel of a piece comes down to sanding. I sand all projects with 220 grit paper and thus I get a nice feel. Anything less you leave the grain more open and the feel gets rougher. I can not tell you what or how to finish that piece because it is a look thing. Good luck. I will say this all finishes are toxic and the smell is strong so work in a well ventilated area. Just a more direct answer to your first question, the difference with BLO you buy and one you mix is unless you are also adding a drier to the mix then it is a thinned down version without the driers. Bought stuff has driers and helps dry and cure faster. Now your version can dry faster if you thin down alot more. Remember BLO is a thinned down version of Linseed oil already. If it is thick then it is going bad.
