My first time using spiral blades along side my flat blades. I found the spiral quite 'scary', mainly because I'm relatively comfortable with my flat blades and I like nice 'clean' points and corners and the spirals gave me neither. . However, I'm not unhappy with the outcome and I can see that they have a place in my 'tool box', just not too often I think. !!11 points

I just had to do it.I worked on the pattern for awhile, got it done, looked at it for several weeks ,and now that I,m back in my shop making dust, I said go for it. I cut the frame that had the words on it,but I didn't allow room at the bottom.they covered Lee,s mouth.so I took my dermel tool and cut them off.wont be making that mistake again.2 points

When Alex posted the Howling Wolf topic.....I just had to buy the pattern And of course as just a beginner quit hard pattern of course. BUT hey I am me and I just had to try as my third project when my second project was drying and before I could put the hooks on that one........ So I just printed the pattern and started. WHAHAHAHHA well that was easier said then done Before I was on the third layer I already broke about 7 blades, went a bit wrong here and there and really was broken because I was so concentrating on doing it right that I had to stop. BUT the next day, after I had finished my project for our dog leashes, it just kept on calling me.....do you know that feeling? So I just wanted to go on again and of course I flew through the blades I had hahahaha, had to order new ones otherwise I could not even finish it Luckily they arrived the next day so I was just jumping from joy that I could go on breaking some more This all said I finished it today and to be honest....I am quit proud at myself for how it turned out. Maybe not the very best but as my third project I am very pleased with it2 points -

I have learned so much from all you guys here at the village. Thanks so much. When someone mentions a product I buy it and try it and see if I like it better than what I am using. I must admit that I have a few opened containers of product product that I might was well pitch because it I wasn't for me. I have four different types of sanding mops. I use them all depending on what I'm making. My go to finish on plaques is SW pre catalyzed lacquer. I spray it clear or in colors. I have tried everything and I keep going back to it. It isn't a great process for doing small pieces like this . I have found that I like using Watco Danish Oil followed up with a coat of Bees Wax and mineral oil. Special thanks to Kevin for doing the video of how to make it.2 points

I did the 50/50 BLO on them today. The frames are my usual fence boards trying to save the knots wherever I can. One is 1/4" real BB from Woodcraft, the last piece I had. The other is the sacrificial 3/16" underlayment. I thought is looked OK, knots, grain and all. Just as easy to make two frames as one when you make them at the same time.1 point

For those of you that use an actual branding iron on your work, do you brand the item before or after you put the finish on? Is your branding iron electric, or heat it with a flame? which do you prefer if you have tried both?1 point

Sorry, I can not remember where I purchased mine. I know it was a little over $70 on sale at the time. There are several places that sell them. Search "signature branding iron". And of coarse I am sure you can get one through Amazon.1 point

Branding question
OCtoolguy reacted to Phantom Scroller for a topic
I have often thought of a branding iron where do you get yours from I did think of making one on my CNC in brass??1 point -
Miran, that still came out great for a beginner. We've all broke blades and I'm still breaking some now and then. Sometimes stack cutting a project like that makes it easier to cut. Also depends on the type blade your using.1 point

Good things to know,I don't have a Branding Iron,I have been saving up to get on. Thanks for the question Jim,and the info Guys.1 point

I hate spirals and have used 3 spiral blades to make maybe a 4 inch cut and that was only because the project was too big to turn with flat blades so HAD to use the spirals and I broke 2 of them. So I take my hat off to you, excellent job. Marg1 point

You did an excellent job, well done. Maybe be you were pushing too hard against the blades. Marg1 point

All western lovers will love this one Bobby, so I won't show my husband. Great pattern and equally great cutting. Marg1 point

I have a branding iron. I usually brand on unfinished wood because I will brand the back of the backer which I do not finish,,,,, should I? I have also branded a piece of veneer several times and I can cut off a piece with the brand on it and glue it to a piece. If you cut it nice it looks pretty good. My branding iron is one you heat by torch and it takes some practice to get it heated just right and evenly. That is the reason I branded a piece of veneer several times. When I have it heated correctly I want to brand more than one thing... So I hit the veneer. Then I don't have to heat it for each project. I have not tried an electric one, maybe more convenient, but somewhat more expensive.1 point

Branding question
Phantom Scroller reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
Jim, I just started signing my work. I bought a used pyrography setup. The first time I used it was after I had applied the finish and I wasn't too happy with the outcome. This time, I signed both pieces I'm working on prior to dipping the oil. Right after I burned my signature, I ran the flat bottom of the work over a piece of 220 paper that I have taped to a corian board. They came out much better this time. So, my answer would be, before you apply the finish.1 point -

I like that one Jim. Can I ask what price you plan to sell them for? I know @Denny Knappen also made some and put in his shop As well. Maybe he can share what he is selling them for as well. What I have seen online, they sell for $20-$25 (or listed for that anyway. ) I bought both the sets from online and showed them here before. Enjoyed making them and then started designing my own. I need to get photos of them to share. I have given several away, and people always ask about them. I keep tossing around idea of trying to sell some or not. considering an Etsy shop. Kevin, @kmmcraftshas planted the seed. Just trying to decide if I really want to go there. also, trying to decide exactly what I would sell in shop. I also do other craft type items and tossing around ideas in my head. Need to decide and “get off the pot” as my dad used to say. It’s the whole shipping that keeps me hesitant. Maybe some of you guys who ship can give some helpful info.on that. I was considering starting with a local show this Fall at a college homecoming and talking to a local store that sells handmade items and going from there. Just need to take the plunge.1 point
