Some puzzles cut from 3/4 poplar using #3, #5 and #7 FD reverse blades. The colored puzzles were done with aniline dye mixed 80% alcohol/20% water. The rest are oil based Minwax stain. The frames are all oil based Spar varnish (because I like the amber tone) and the puzzle pieces are several coats of clear lacquer. I used flat blades to get the pieces to fit tighter than with spirals, but that created some fit problems when I colored them due to the smaller kerf. They took a good deal of time with the mop sander to get the pieces back in. I need to pay more attention to the kerf in the future.9 points

The pattern is by Theodore Buzzeli and found in CWWC September 2007. It is cut on 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood 12" square and backed with a black mat board. I used FD New Spiral #1 blades and finished with two coats spray Shellac. As a framing store, I will leave this unframed. The customer can chose the frame. Comment welcome.6 points -

I had made this box pattern a few years ago using Paduak wood and the bane of Padauk is eventually gets darker. I had some pieces of 1/4" Bubinga and wanted to try it again. I had enough pieces for the top and sides but the pieces I had for the bottom was cupped pretty good. I had read a few articles on straightening out cupped/warped wood and thought to give it a try. I put some hot water in a plastic storage tub with a weight on top and left out side in the sun for several hours. It did straighten it out. I then sandwiched it between 2 pieces of 1/4" glass with 40 lbs of weight and kept it there for a few days. Amazing! It came out straight. I used a #2 skip tooth blade and it also worked well for the veining. I built the sides of the box first and they have two tabs that insert into the base and that also helped from further cupping. I finished with shellac and some light sanding and a few coats of Clear Gloss lacquer. I posted the book I had gotten the patterns from. I have done several other boxes from this book and I like their patterns.4 points

Good News...Bad News
stoney and one other reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
Good news first...My blades came in!! I now have new toys...Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #5, #3, #1, and #2/0 ! Bring on the tight stuff!! Ordered from Wooden Teddy Bear on Fri. delivered Mon. fast! I was looking around the web for scrolling stuff and found Rapid Resizer. In their designs was a KC Chiefs arrowhead! I grabbed it and used the letter stencil maker to put CHIEFS under it and print it out, so far so good. Out to the shop I go with my new pattern, cut some wood and prep for cutting. Started cutting the black squiggly line around the arrowhead...got blues playing on the stereo...loud...just as happy as a clam. Got to the end of a line...and the center...MOVED...! Oh No! I did it again! I was so excited about making a cool pattern and the wall plaque that I forgot to check it for islands. This time is not as bad as the love on the buck & doe...I'll just glue the center to the backer board when I finish it up. I'm thinking (very dangerous) if I cut the RED out of the KC and leave the black lines it will look like the K is over the C like the photo. What do you think?2 points -

easy and fast one to cut
OzarkSawdust and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I have been eyeing this one for a long time and since I am home alone for 9 days, I have all the shop time I desire. So after the few things I posted yesterday and today, I decided to go back out to the shop one more time and cut this one from Steve Good. It was a fun and easy one to cut. In fact it took me less then an hour to cut this one from start to taking the pattern off the board. So if you would like to cut a wood portrait and have never done so, here is a great one to start off with. If you just like it but have never got around to cutting it, It only takes an hour of your time. You could cut this one while you are waiting for your finish on your other project to dry. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused you due to my misunderstanding your question. Yes I think the "C" would still look like the "K" was over it.2 points

Sooooo, left unsupervised? The possibility's are endless and a bit frightening. lol2 points -
Just an FYI, I use Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse blades almost exclusively. With over twenty years experience scrolling, I cannot control the UR 2/0 blade. I have tried everything I can think of, but no luck controlling them. So when I need a 2/0 blade I use Olson 2/0 blades.2 points

We were there years ago on a bus tour. Every American, Veteran or civilian should be required to go there & see the magnitude of the Arlington Cemetery. We were told that there are more Civil War Veterans there than from all our other wars combined, because both sides were buried there. I cut that piece for a fellow Veteran years ago. Instead of the emblem below the eagle's head, I put his 1st name. I thought it was a Steve Good pattern at the time, but cannot find it now. jerry2 points

Straight-up Stencil pattern. Font is "Pirate Scroll" from dafont.com (with a lot of editing....the font, if enlarged, includes a lot of "weathering" to give it that rusty, barely-maintained, out-in-all-elements look...which is straight-up cool, but not really ideal for scrolling). Used a piece of the 2x12 beam for this, and considering the number of blades I went through to cut that thing, I believe I"ll use the remainder for a shelf. LOL At least two Pegas #7mg's and a #5mg snapped or twisted on me, and the last #7 was cutting more out of habit than out of any sharpness remaining on the teeth by the end of it. Still, I'm happy with it, and seeing as this was cut from the original pattern, I was able to make some tweaks to the design to space out a few letters to prevent them from running into each other.2 points -

I played golf with a bunch of neighbours every Monday orTuesday and at the end of the year I make something for a draw that we have at our closing of the season breakfast. This year the golfer clock is a pattern from Steve Good. One of my neighbor has grandkids and I like to cut some stuff for them, also from Steve Good.2 points -

Excalibur Bearings = Junk Saw? ( Update It Runs Again )

I ended up replacing the complete linkage and motor cam om my EX. Seems like everything was under 200.00. I purchased the saw new and it was only about two years old when the motor cam bearing fell apart. Ray at Seyco talked me into changing all the linkage. It ran so much better when I was done. much better than when new. I believe that you can probably find a bearing for the motor cam but the linkage bearings I am not sure about, You are right it is worth fixing. good luck with your project. Keep us posted. Mine had some very thin shims in behind the motor cam bearing. If yours has those make sure they go back in or the motor cam bearing will not stay in the housing. grizz1 point -
Only a few? I might wait a couple years.. that way it's more fun figuring out where it all went and what happen to the parts that are missing etc.. That's typically how I've always done it in the past.. LOL1 point

Going to add some more photos a little later showing the bad parts. Phone died while working on it but I managed to get the rest of this apart. Pretty sure I can make the needed repairs without buying the whole assembly. Biggest thing is the one bigger sleeve is worn a couple thousands. Actually don’t think it’ll effect it at all so may try new bearings with the old sleeve. First will call Ray to see if he can get me just the bigger sleeve. Think it’s the same sleeve as the DW but not certain yet.1 point

I opted for aniline dye because with 80% alcohol I hoped to avoid raising the grain as much as food coloring. Still raises the grain but hey, I could drink the leftovers. lol1 point

Perfect projects for a shop like your friends. Looks like you'll have more and more work with the owner as time goes by and with his other store owners.Lovely work,BARB!!!!1 point -
Good news is that it looks good & you have already found a solution to the problem. I think if you drill one hole on the outside of the black line and cut the outside, don't cut the two lines across the "C" and then cut the red out of the inside. What you have left should be the black outline of the letters, just paint that black. Paint the backboard were needed red and glue the letters over the red and the arrowhead to the backboard. Hope that makes sense.1 point
