First Segmentation
meflick and 5 others reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
For my first segmentation I thought I would try something simple. This "Yin Yang Cats" is by unknown on the internet. Alex Fox did a very good video on it a while back. After watching it a couple of times I thought...why not! I started with a FD UR #1 on one whisker, one ear, and one nose. Then I switched to a Pegas #5 and did the rest...much easier. I can't believe the rest of the whiskers, eyes, and nose cut that well with a #5...when I had a little wander with a #1. Now I've got to round the edges, do the coloring, cut the backer, and mount the whole thing up! It may have to wait till Tuesday...there's a good possibility a trip to KC and Woodcrafter may happen tomorrow...a King 16" just might follow me home6 points -
CHIEFS #2
Dad_Tech77 and 4 others reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
Finished up the second CHIEFS plaque. I enlarged the arrowhead an inch and redid the CHIEFS enlarging and moved the spacing slightly. This one went smooth and quickly! I knew the problems I ran into on the first, thanks for all the help guys, and I used Pegas #5. I think this one's good enough to sell...? Watcha think? Would you sell as is...or do a frame?5 points -

Sam Custodio pattern
Scrappile and 4 others reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Cut this optical illusion last week, then went on a business trip and totally forgot to post it. LOL 1" Lowes whiteboard, can't remember what blade. Remember, start from the center and work outwards, don't start from one edge and just work your way around....there's two delicate pieces in the middle, that are hard to spot because of the swirly nature of the pattern. At least, they were for me.5 points -
Here's a cute little sign for the people who are hooked on using UBER. I wonder if they had these in the old days? Download from my Free Pattern Page I'm making some toy trucks for a customer and needed a lot of wheels, so rather than cut them one by one with a scroll saw or hole saw, I use this bulk method. If you need a lot of wheels and don't want to buy them, you might find this method interesting. I'll be publishing a more detailed video later on. Check Out Video on YouTube3 points

Looks like a misplaced decimal point to me. That is a Chinese web site according to the contact info at the bottom of the page. I found it interesting that the bulk of the site advertises women's clothes. If you did order two, you'd get free shipping3 points
-
I would say it is a scam. They did not even put anything under the about us tab at the bottom of the page.3 points

They are usually always available and they have other brands as well if you want DeWalt they have them also. You need to go to their website to investigate2 points

I like it, looking forward to the finished result. I like doing segmentation and do some heavy shaping on some of it for greater impact and dimension. It is an excellent and economical way to practice shaping.2 points

My guess is Ray..cost.. today's saw clamps are a very simple design with virtually no moving parts.. These Delta clamps wasn't liked by everyone and lots of people had issues with them breaking... mainly as was stated before.. not having them adjusted properly the lever handle would bend and or break.. They are a nice clamping system that work well for some and not so well for others.. Today's clamps with just a thumb screw is something the engineers don't have to invent or re-invent.. simple to just drill and tap a hole for a thumb screw that most everyone understands how to use.. is just my opinion why.. I really like the upper clamp of the new Jet saws.. I've played around with this clamp almost every time I go to the local lumber store to get more plywood as they have many tools on the showroom floor.. That said I haven't used it in real life cutting so maybe it's not all that it looks like to me.. Many folks do not like the lower barrel clamp part of it.. and some say the reverse teeth of the blades are set up too low.. I really question this myself because the design of the barrel has a hole going all the way through so there is no stop or bottom out for the blade... these barrels are basically the same thing as the Hawks barrel clamps that many do not like as well.. but Hawk has a bottom out on the clamp.. I 'm always wondering if these people actually have the saws set up and tuned correctly. buying the Hawk clamps so the blade has a positive stop would be a plus... I already have plenty of those clamps with my old Hawk, LOL2 points

It's not a bad sander Ray for the money.. You got a great deal when you bought yours.. I had a coupon but it was still $33.. for $7 more I could buy the refurb Bosh.. that's all I'm sayin.. I don't hate the sander.. and would probably love it for sanding larger work pieces and for shorter periods of time.. I try to keep in mind that most everyone here are hobbyist and not production like me.. I believe I said that in my post that its not bad for the hobbyist or the occasional user.. It does work well enough.. and maybe with time I could build some muscle in my arm to use it for a hour at a time like I normally do.. Sanding those little ornaments.. I get tired with my Bosh as well.. 60 ornaments is about a half a batch from my normal.. The process is holding the sander up off the table and in the air the majority of time.. You sand one side lift up flip the ornament to the other side and sand it.. pile it in the sanded stack and grab another unsanded one.. so yeah I'm holding the thing up a lot.. I only do a quick sanding as I pre-sand my blanks.. That is time consuming too because I stack cut 4-6 at a time but with the blanks I start sanding with 100Grit then 150, 220, 320.. after the ornaments are cut I just hit them with the 320 again.. Not uncommon for me to run that sander 1+ hour a day this time of year.. I don't consider a Bosh "really high end " Nor do I consider a DeWalt high end either.. LOL My point is if you're going to pay the HF regular price.. you might be better off buying a different brand..1 point

Thanks for the heads up on that.. Yeah I'm thinking a new one this time round because the dust canister has a crack in mine and also when i changed out the brushes it just really hasn't been right.. though it lasted quite awhile.. I think I may retire the one I have and just buy a new one.. Yeah, I've bought a lot of Refurbish from those guys.1 point

Magnets
Phantom Scroller reacted to Rockytime for a topic
This is not new or even my idea but thought I'd pass it along. I purchase Neodymium magnets from K&J Magnetics and use them for making refrigerator magnets. They are super strong I use them in various places. On my scroll saw I attach a magnet with double coated foam tape on the left leg of my saw to hold my blade clamp key. I could reach for it in the tray on my saw but now I no longer look for it as motor reflex automatically places my hand on the key just like you don't need to look where to insert an ignition key. Steve Good suggests a magnet on the side of the side of the saw to hold a blade to use for punching small pieces through your cutting. I also use them to hold small trays to my saws.1 point -

it's a modern version of a opaque projector. We had them in high school . I had to make a drawing using it for a class...so I put a pack of cigarettes on the table taped the paper on the wall and drew it perfectly. Now days if a high school kid pulled out a pack they would get in trouble.1 point -

Blade Breakage
OCtoolguy reacted to SCROLLSAW703 for a topic
Howdy Mr. Rocky, Good to see yer post, Sir. I have been in & out, seein' what ya guys are up to, but not much to tell about here. I'll pm ya. In my scroll projects, I use several blades in that size range, boss. Anywhere from #02 on up to a #5. I have learned, especially on my Hawk, on the smaller blades, a little more tension & and less blade speed, gets the blades to last longer, and really cuts downs blade breakage. Readin' thru some of what's already been throwed out there to ya, I ain't able to say as I go along with the wax on accounta I ain't never tried it. Plywood is hard on blades that small, as well as speed. As a rule, fretwork is fairly slow, steady cuttin'. I've found that Johnsons wax on the blades works better'n anything, an' don't seem to pester any of the lacquer or clear coat I spray on the projects.1 point -
Try slowing the blade speed. An overheated blade will break easily. I also use a piece of paraffin wax rubbed against the sides of a moving blade for lubricant and to keep it cooler. Small blades require a little less tension too, but still break easily and dull quickly. Look closely at the sides of your broken blade to see if it has changed color in the cutting area when compared to the end color. If it's changing color you are overheating the blade. The increased temperature will cause the metal to become brittle and it will break much more easily as it becomes brittle. Charley1 point

Action Tape
scrollingforsanity reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
I use clear shelf liner instead of painters tape.. Walmart has it for around $6 a roll.. I print my patterns on full sheet shipping labels and stick that to the shelf liner.. Works real well for me.. no messy spray glues unless I'm doing a project that requires more than one sheet of paper.. Not sure why this says around $15 because I was just at my local Walmart and it was $5.98 I think.. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Duck-Brand-1115496-Peel-N-Stick-Laminate-Adhesive-Shelf-Liner-12-x-36-ft-Clear/217108429 Since I use shipping labels for printing out the labels for mailing my products.. I buy these in large quantity so they're quite a lot cheaper than going to your local office store and buying 10-20 sheets.. I buy this about once a year.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1000-Shipping-Labels-Full-Sheet-8-5x11-Self-Adhesive-PACKZON/172818314778?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l26491 point -
If I'm doing some simple patterns, I'll spray 3m contact medium on the paper but if I'm doing complicated or intricate designs, I'll definitely use the tape from scrolleronline.com. It's not cheap $1.00 a foot (scroller does run some promotional discounts) but I am careful to use only an the exact pattern area and will piece together cut offs to save. Removal is easy. I always pre sand the wood before applying the tape and if it binds a little, I'll use some "Goof Off" and an acid brush to lift it off. It's my "go to" product.1 point

I saw a video the other day where a guy printed the pattern on a page and pealed off the backing and stuck it to the wood. Like an oversized shipping label. Anyone use something like that? How well does it work vs blue painters tape & spray glue?1 point -
