The Nut House
OzarkSawdust and 5 others reacted to baggetta for a topic
Welcome To The Nut House October 22 is National Nut Day, so in anticipation of this great event I've prepared a rather unique comic pattern. Mine is shown in simulated wood, but you can cut it in any type of wood and put it atop a flat or custom made base. Pattern available on my free page: http://baggetta.com/pebooks/puzzle_patterns.htm6 points -

Hi everyone. This isn't a scroll saw project but I just wanted to show you all what I made for my sons grill. I did use the scroll saw on a few of the parts for the shelves to fit them in tight. This is 4 feet long and 3 feet tall and all made out of cedar. He has a Kamato Joe grill which is almost like the Green Egg grills. He got his kitchen remodeled with new countertops and I told him to save the center aisle one and I would make him a cabinet for outside. The top is made out of Corian. The grill will sit in where the hole is. Now I just have to get someone to help me put it in my Van. It's pretty heavy.3 points

The shop is open again, finished some projects, some on the go and more to do. This is real busy time of the year, clean up around the house, prepare for winter and also for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We are going to Panama City Beach again this winter for 3 months, so packing to do, but there is always time to make sawdust.3 points -

Slide Through Two Piece Ornament #03
jbrowning and one other reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
This is #3 of a series of 12. The patterns are by the late Dirk Boelman, and I purchased the set from Scroller Online, but they no longer list these. I used 1/4" Walnut scraps. It is approximately 5" high. I make these wile I wait for the glue to dry on other projects. I used FD UR #1 blades and finished with one coat sanding sealer and two coats spray Polyurethane Clear Gloss. Comments welcome.2 points -

Cut this optical illusion last week, then went on a business trip and totally forgot to post it. LOL 1" Lowes whiteboard, can't remember what blade. Remember, start from the center and work outwards, don't start from one edge and just work your way around....there's two delicate pieces in the middle, that are hard to spot because of the swirly nature of the pattern. At least, they were for me.2 points -

Outdoor awning project
frankorona and one other reacted to spirithorse for a topic
Here is a photo of an out-door awning project that my wife and I completed recently. Mind you, I am 64 years old and my wife is slightly younger and we finished this in 7 days. It is approximately 14' wide by 22' long. Handling those 14' 2' x 6' x 14' rafters was a bit of a work-out but, we managed well for a couple of novices. I don't know who the old geezer is having a smoke on our newly completed deck but, I suppose that just shows that it serves its purpose to have a comfortable place to sit out-side and still be sheltered. It has a standing ridge metal roof which extends beneath the gutters on the sun room on the right side and the gutters on the house in the back. The front side extends about 19 inches over the posts and the left edge extends about 24" beyond the posts. Thanks for looking and God Bless! Spirithorse2 points -

Here's a cute little sign for the people who are hooked on using UBER. I wonder if they had these in the old days? Download from my Free Pattern Page I'm making some toy trucks for a customer and needed a lot of wheels, so rather than cut them one by one with a scroll saw or hole saw, I use this bulk method. If you need a lot of wheels and don't want to buy them, you might find this method interesting. I'll be publishing a more detailed video later on. Check Out Video on YouTube2 points

Woodrush reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
I ordered a brand new King 16" scroll saw!! I was going to drive up to Woodcraft in KC yesterday morning, over 2 hrs., but I called as soon as they opened. The guy I wanted to talk to wasn't working so another guy checked all over the store and could only find the floor display, none still in the box. I prefer to get one in the sealed box so I know there is nothing missing and that it's not a return. He found 8 in the warehouse and being first thing Monday, said we should have no trouble getting one of those. I actually bought it Monday, the last day of the sale, so I got the discount. Glad I called first ! They wanted $130 for the stand...I can do better than that. Will probably build a bench for the shop and look for a metal stand to easily unbolt for travel. Can't wait for my new toy !!!!!1 point -
CHIEFS #2
Dad_Tech77 reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
Finished up the second CHIEFS plaque. I enlarged the arrowhead an inch and redid the CHIEFS enlarging and moved the spacing slightly. This one went smooth and quickly! I knew the problems I ran into on the first, thanks for all the help guys, and I used Pegas #5. I think this one's good enough to sell...? Watcha think? Would you sell as is...or do a frame?1 point -

Question about miter saws
OCtoolguy reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I'm not a HF fan either, although I realize they are trying to up their game when it comes to tool quality. The thing about sliding miter saws is that there are a lot of moving parts that require tight tolerances and high build quality to achieve and maintain accuracy. I have no idea whether or not the HF Hercules is a quality tool or barely good enough for rough carpentry, but I'm not sure a 12" slider is a tool where I'd be looking for a bargain basement beauty..1 point -
Question about miter saws
jerrye reacted to NC Scroller for a topic
I am not a HF fan. Whatever brand, type or style you get do your self a very big favor and get a quality blade made especially for a miter saw. Most saws come with poor quality combo blades only good for cutting construction lumber or rough cut lumber. If you ever want to make picture frames or other precision work you need a better blade.1 point -

I found that, by using a magnifying lamp, you're literally "too close to see the big picture". It just becomes a bunch of curvy lines, at that point.1 point -

Looking good. I think I'd keep toppling over while trying to cut that.1 point -
The reason refurb is often better than brand new is that on a manufacturing line, representative samples of tools are pulled and tested, while every refurb tool gets tested. Like Kevin, I also have picked up a few refurbs, and have been well pleased with all of them.1 point

Hi Paul. Thank you. Purchased frame from Micheals, where I purchase most of my frames (on sale). This frame came with a white mat which I didn’t like, so I purchased a grey mat for $10.00. The frame is a dark brown. The foam backing is also from Micheals which is available in a roll, so I’m able to do a fair number of projects with a single roll. Thank you.1 point -

Slide Through Two Piece Ornament #03
wombatie reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
Thanks Marg. Yes, a set of 12 purchased from Scroller Online, but they no longer list them. Checking with Karen, Dirk's wife, to see if she can locate the patterns.1 point -
The reson for the six degree angle of the starter hole is because I use a 1/16" drill bit . A smaller bit could use less of an angle, true, but using a smaller bit does not work well for me because if the blade just barely fits through the starter hole the tensioned blade will hold the wood at too big an angle and can bend or break the blade. Here is a trick I recently learned about hiding the starter hole. If after doing your inlay cut out and before gluing it in place , if the starter hole will be visible I lightly sand it away at the top surface and the bottom surface in the to be inlayed wood and in the background wood. I then glue the inlay in place and after the glue has set I use filler, made from glue and sanding dust and apply it. Now the starter hole just looks like a very slight wide spot in the outline. If one does not know where it is it is very hard to find.1 point
-
Having done thousands of inlays does not make me an expert.( but I have sold them all ! ). I tilt my table at about 2 degrees but I drill my 1/16' starter hole at about 6 degrees just inside the image side of the line with the wood to be inlayed under the background wood. Here is a photo of my very first attempt! (I sold it) )1 point

Calling All Puzzle Zombies or Zombie Wannabe's

My wife and I are both disabled vets. Our medical 'insurance is the VA. Our son has been our unpaid caretaker. Since we do not have paid insurance we have been put in a tight spot several times with accidents with my son. One time he had a blood test, walked outside and pasted out falling face down. Drove his teeth through his lip and knocked out a tooth into his skull. Needless to say he didn't have the money and we sure didn't. Every hospital has an application to revoke the bills which they cover. Have had to do this twice. If you quietly call the hospital, find which department that handles this, you can fill out the form work. Either they can revoke the entire bill, or severely reduce it. As Veterans we have had to do this twice, which was accepted. We couldn't have paid one of them for the rest of our lives. This is first hand information, not something off the internet or something I heard of Its not welfare, but a program that helps those that could never pay the bill. RJF.1 point
