  2. My daughter had requested a shadow-box cutting with a dragon in it. I tried coming up with one on my own, but it never seemed to work out or line up....so I found, quite by accident, that paper-crafting uses almost the exact same templates that scrolling does, AND there were several dragon shadowbox patterns already out there! Xacto blades can cut smaller precision holes than my current drillbit will allow, so there are a couple that are missing (there are supposed to be two TINY holes where her fingers are), but overall, this was a fairly quick cut. Be prepared for a lot of angles, though, this pattern is a perfect way to learn how to make sharp corners. I did modify the pattern slightly, I added three layers of frame-only (far right of the pic where everything is drying on the towel). It helps give it some depth and lets the layers pop a bit. I just took the layer with the dragon, then deleted everything from the center and stack-cut all three at once and glued them in between the four "pattern" layers. Pattern-frame-pattern-frame-pattern-frame-pattern. 3/8" BB ply, used several blades (broke two Pegas #2/0 blades, finished up with a Pegas #3MG...need to order new blades....), stained Minwax Cherry. If I were to cut this again (and I might....it was a fun cut), I think staining the dragon/princess layer a darker color (or lighter, if I go with a dark stain overall) would be the way to go. Pattern is by "PaperLightBoxDesign", $5US from Etsy. https://www.etsy.com/listing/608543517/princess-dragon-paper-cutting-light-box?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=dragon shadow box&ref=sr_gallery-1-6&fbclid=IwAR0exVbazDksiw8Z0FNaAvnKFCpztSlqWuWDL7e7xZMpqOgEpfafTU81-fw

  3. A few weeks ago I posted a pic of 3 cutout copies of a "Sisters" tattoo that my wife and her sister got. The lady that cuts my hair wanted a couple for her and her sister. Like the first three, the frames are store bought.

    Needed cheering up

I had a day where 'nothing' went right. I couldn't do right, I couldn't say anything right, I broke a cup and a plate by not holding them right. So in the end I took myself off to the shed and picked a cute, easy, flowing piece to cut. Now I feel better It didn't take long to cut (1 hour) but when I'm at my saw the rest of the world goes away for a while, it's great therapy !!!!

  8. Very impressed. That is a lot of concentration. I myself am no stranger to very small pieces, but tbh they were broken off larger pieces, so don't really count. Bob

    Wonder how many out there decided to cut Steve's Mini Nativity Scene? I Love it. Gonna be in my Craft Show for sure. Think like he mentioned would be a \Good Seller.... The other is another Good Seller each year. Both made from good ole Baltic Birch. Both cut with my favorite blade. Flying Dutchman FDUR #1..........Thanks for Looking...............Danny :+}

  11. I'm not sure where to post this. Or even if I should. But, I regard you folks as friends so I am going to open up. I've been sort of "high centered" for the past month. A few of you already know about this but for those who don't I'll explain. One month ago today, Barb and I lost our oldest son to depression caused suicide. It's been tough around here since. We are getting past the initial shock but I just haven't been motivated to go out to the shop and do anything. So, I sit here at my computer and read all the stuff you great people post. I try to be active in conversations where I might have something meaningful to add. I'm truly sorry to bringing this to such a HAPPY place but I just had the need to talk about it. I hope you all will understand and forgive. Just know how much I appreciate every one of you and you all are truly my VILLAGE! Doug is the second from the left. Blond, blue-eyed. The other 3 are the rest of our brood.

  12. Here's a trial version of a sign for my house: I used a piece of scrap pine, and with the thinnest line less than 1mm, will need to make the design larger as it was really difficult to get the blade through the hole. As it is, we don't currently have a house sign, so this one is propped up in a window andit doesn't look too bad! I'll probably use birch ply for the proper sign, and shape the outline somehow.

    Customer Request

A customer gave me a picture of what she had in mind. They are going to use this as part of their wedding ceremony. I put a hanger on the back so they can use it as a wall hanging. I really like the concept.

Scrolling is my replacement for fishing Being born in Minnesota with all the lakes and streams, when things went sour, a few hours on the water cured all. When I'm fishing or scrolling, the only thing on my mind is right in front of me. All else takes a back seat..

That is some precise sawing. Just gave me an idea if I can find some old school wooden dominos.

  16. The reason for tilting the back of the saw is to help your neck and shoulders. The reason I like the way my Excalibur tilts the head is the rack and pinion system. For double bevel inlay the tilt is very small and needs to be exactly correct. I could never get it correct with the Dewalt. Loosen the table and tap, doesn’t work easily.

  17. I made this wagon on the scrollsaw and made signs to hang on the front with Happy Harvest, Happy Easter, Merry Christmas, a red, white, and blue striped star, and a Welcome sign for the front of the wagon which is 30" Long and 16" wide. My wife painted all of the signs and today she put the Fall leaves, Pumpkins, and Scarecrow in the wagon. I'll post a better pic without all the clutter behind it later. God Bless! Spirithorse

  26. Thanks for all the input. I have to work today (I do volunteer work a couple of days a week, providing respite care for a couple of families where the husbands have Alzheimer's and the full-time caregiver needs a break.) so I won't be able to explore this further until sometime Tuesday.

Scrolling gives you time out from life, unless you are doing a complicated pattern like I am now. You did a terrific job, he is soooooooooooooo cute and puts a smile on everyones face. Well done. Marg

  28. Hi, Ray, I'm sorry to hear of your loss and my prayers are with your family. I don't want to start an up-roar about religion but, I hope you have faith in God to help. Please do not let yourself become depressed and please know there are a lot of people here to talk to. My e-mail is spirithorse55 at Hotmail dot com if you ever want to talk more privately. 29. Okay so I lied.. Not a Jam nut it's a lock nut... The rectangle shape I circled #63 fits into the back of the saw where I also circled.. that piece ( 63 ) is threaded and if I remember correctly is threaded on the larger portion of the shaft..( My brains not working tonight guess I'm tired LOL ) anyway it seems like the lock nut only was to screw down onto the shaft a certain distance. I just remember after taking this apart I had a bit of trouble with getting enough thread to adjust that upper arm.. since I'm tired maybe someone else will be able to make sense of parts view. If you take off the plastic piece on the top of the upper arm you can look back in thee and see that lock nut and the lower portion of that mechanism.. I do remember one thing very well.. Once you unscrew that lock nut all the way.. there is a washer on there too.. that can be very easily dropped down inside the saw.. and also.. if you unscrew it all he way off... It's not very fun trying to reach back there to get the washer on and the nut on too.. I ended up putting enough grease or maybe it was a drop of glue.. to hold the washer onto the lock nut, LOL.. You will need a pair of long needle nose pliers to hold the nut/washer combo to get it started on the threads. then you can switch to a open end wrench, LOL

  30. Okay, so if you actually did run out of threads.. If you dare.. and are mechanically inclined.. take the saw apart.. at the bottom of the threaded knob it is double nut ( jam nut) to lock the thing from coming loose and allowing the thing to accidentally being turned all the way out.. Its sort of an adjustment thing too if I remember correctly.. I'd have to take mine apart again to see exactly what it's all about now as it was a while ago that i took the whole thing apart to put the blue loc-tite on mine.. should have taken a million photos to help if others had questions.. Anyway.. It could be very possible that these jam nuts wasn't totally tight and worked their way up.. and now you are at a place where you have no more threads.. Not only have I had many things come loose on my saw, as I've read over the years of others having things fall apart.. even before they moved production to a new plant..

  31. Well, I'm gonna break the rules right off of the bat. Made a couple of these last year for the wife and daughter. Also made this huge thing a couple of Halloween's ago. 6' tall and 12' long.

  32. Cute cutting!!! I cut this and put it up above my workbench a while back. There's just ....something... about scrolling that makes the rest of the world sort itself out a bit.

  33. You can also use a razor knife to draw a line separating the two, then use an artists brush. In this one, all I did was use an artists brush, put the lighter shade on first

  37. So sorry for your loss. We almost lost our youngest daughter to an attempted suicide. Luckily her co worker went to see why she hadn't been to work and found her. No one knew she was struggling so much. So much seems bottled up. It's hard not to blame yourself. Take care.

  41. What Ray said. That should take care of your problem. I measure my arm every once in a while to make sure it has not moved even though it hasn't moved for a couple years. I wrapped electrical tape around the exposed threads and lesft a tag end in case I need to rewove it. works great. Some of the guys put blue lock tite on the threads to keep them secure. grizz

Very cool and so well executed! It's easy to tell you put some time in that one. In Guatemala they say "Calidad!" (emphasis on dad) when something is cool and very nice. It translates "quality". So, Calidad!!!

Looks 100% better than the one I started. I used to cheap a wood and to coarse of a blade. Wished I could have finished it. Keep your work coming, Marg!!!
