  1. Cutting another Steve Good hummingbird. Did about 1/3 with the WEN before I picked up the King...so much easier with the King! Got the top layer done today and started the lettering on the backer. The butterfly wings were really a bear. I tried a 2/0 spiral blade for the first time. They have a mind of their own!

    Decorative Wagon

My wife saw a table-top version of a wagon she liked but, wanted a large one for outside. It is 30" long by 16" wide and, for now, has 5 signs to be displayed on it. My wife painted the signs and used a Cricut vinyl cutter for the lettering. A pic of the table top version is on the left on a clip board. God Bless! Spirithorse

    Wonder how many out there decided to cut Steve's Mini Nativity Scene? I Love it. Gonna be in my Craft Show for sure. Think like he mentioned would be a \Good Seller.... The other is another Good Seller each year. Both made from good ole Baltic Birch. Both cut with my favorite blade. Flying Dutchman FDUR #1..........Thanks for Looking...............Danny :+}

  8. G'day all, Have finished another lot of trinket boxes. We have the Spring Festival on Sunday so hopefully They will go. Some designs I have posted before. The Heart, Round bird and cat are new. Also used Western Red Cedar on the Love birds with the blue felt and "Mum" is pine with and Oregon (Douglas Fir) top it has a purple glitter felt. The red bands are Jarrah. All boxes are flocked and the lids have a proud, flocked piece under them, so they fit snugly into bases.

    Portrait

Here is my latest, Mother and stepfather of a friend. Done from GIMP, in 6mm BB. and finished in French Polish. I mentioned the photo converter yesterday as being suitable for some people, on some projects. Well below is the same photo done in the photo converter. I think I'll be sticking with GIMP for portraits. svg.svg

  10. My daughter had requested a shadow-box cutting with a dragon in it. I tried coming up with one on my own, but it never seemed to work out or line up....so I found, quite by accident, that paper-crafting uses almost the exact same templates that scrolling does, AND there were several dragon shadowbox patterns already out there! Xacto blades can cut smaller precision holes than my current drillbit will allow, so there are a couple that are missing (there are supposed to be two TINY holes where her fingers are), but overall, this was a fairly quick cut. Be prepared for a lot of angles, though, this pattern is a perfect way to learn how to make sharp corners. I did modify the pattern slightly, I added three layers of frame-only (far right of the pic where everything is drying on the towel). It helps give it some depth and lets the layers pop a bit. I just took the layer with the dragon, then deleted everything from the center and stack-cut all three at once and glued them in between the four "pattern" layers. Pattern-frame-pattern-frame-pattern-frame-pattern. 3/8" BB ply, used several blades (broke two Pegas #2/0 blades, finished up with a Pegas #3MG...need to order new blades....), stained Minwax Cherry. If I were to cut this again (and I might....it was a fun cut), I think staining the dragon/princess layer a darker color (or lighter, if I go with a dark stain overall) would be the way to go. Pattern is by "PaperLightBoxDesign", $5US from Etsy. https://www.etsy.com/listing/608543517/princess-dragon-paper-cutting-light-box?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=dragon shadow box&ref=sr_gallery-1-6&fbclid=IwAR0exVbazDksiw8Z0FNaAvnKFCpztSlqWuWDL7e7xZMpqOgEpfafTU81-fw

  11. A few weeks ago I posted a pic of 3 cutout copies of a "Sisters" tattoo that my wife and her sister got. The lady that cuts my hair wanted a couple for her and her sister. Like the first three, the frames are store bought.

There is no pattern available, 'cause it was not designed for scrollsaw. I saved some Inkscape drawings,at that time, I draw outlines from the photo.I put them here and I hope it will help you.How I see ,from my own file ,the gears were 12cm diameter. Write me ,please,if you can not open the SVG files,I'll try to find another way to post them open-close outline.svg roata dintata 12 cm.svg

    Vacuum Noise Levels

Since dust collection noise can be irritating this may or may not be of interest to anyone but here goes for those of you who may be thinking about getting a vacuum for dust collection. I did an on line search for decibel levels on Fein and Fastool vacuums. These are the levels listed on their websites. Fein Turbo: lowest end model, $290, 66 dB Festool: lowest end model, $400, low 62 dB, high 72 dB I have two Oreck vacuums 80 dB Filter Queen vacuum on my dust collector 65 dB I mention the Filter Queen (FQ) because of it's power and low noise. I was perusing Craigslist and Facebook Market for used FQs. Facebook had a number of them from $25 to $250 with a lot of unneeded accessories. I've had two of them. They are very strong and new they are selling for over $3000. I bought mine perhaps 25 years ago used from a friend who was a dealer. I have a 13 gallon HF dust collector and the FQ works as well or better. Also the FQ is very compact and would work well for a stacked setup. So I am just suggesting checking out the used market and you may some money.

  17. I made this wagon on the scrollsaw and made signs to hang on the front with Happy Harvest, Happy Easter, Merry Christmas, a red, white, and blue striped star, and a Welcome sign for the front of the wagon which is 30" Long and 16" wide. My wife painted all of the signs and today she put the Fall leaves, Pumpkins, and Scarecrow in the wagon. I'll post a better pic without all the clutter behind it later. God Bless! Spirithorse

    Edward and Mom

I would like to present Edward and Victoria. Edward is the new white Rino at the San Diego animal park and Victoria is his mother. Both are doing great. I have been lucky enough to be friends with a worker there and she has sent me photo's of both. Patterns were created by Gayle at Scrollers Cafe This is a very endanger species and we need to support all efforts to save them. Jim

  27. I just added a hepa filter to my cheap, rather low powered Porter Cable shop vac for $16.00. Needed a bit of modification but nothing too tough. The filter claims filtration down to 0.3 microns. Years ago I had a large Ryobi shop vac that attached to my table saw and also a downdraft sanding station. It was loud but I duct taped a fine bag type filter (probably not HEPA quality) ro the exhaust and took care of much of the fine dust. Decibel level still pretty high though.

    Vacuum Noise Levels

Had a meticulous customer which I made lots of money from but lost more in the end. He wanted the hot tub blower to be quitter so I made a baffle box around it and knocked the noise DB,down to nil!!! same principle as a car muffler design inside.

  29. Excellent comment on how much filtration you need. As I get older, I need better filtration as my lungs do not work as well. I have the Festool for over 5 years and my cost per day is pennies. I use it on the scroll saw and sanders. You cannot see dust hanging in the air in my shop. If I had the HF dust coll, I would get a cartridge filter for it. Many people modify it with such a filter with reported better suction and filtering.

  32. Hi Ray. My very sincere condolences to you and family. What you’re going through is normal and I would think your family is experiencing the same. Time will heal but it’s important you help one another through this period in time. Don’t be afraid to seek professional help. I’ve been in your shoes and I’m glad my wife and I had gotten professional help. I work in the death industry and have to deal with families on a regular basis who have gone through the same situation. The best advice I can give is express your feelings any way you know how, weather it’s through social media, here on the Village, friends, family and or anyone who will listen. Life must go on and it will. Pardon my long windedness. All the best to you and family.

  34. Ok, I finally got a chance today to sit down and give some compound cuts a try. I learned a lot from all of you who shared "how to information" in this thread (especially @CharleyL's detailed instructions and photos he provided in that threaded.): http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/24171-compound-cutting-wood/ Thanks Charley for all that great info. Thanks also to @Bill WIlson, @dgman and everyone else who provided information and help in that thread as well. I used Poplar wood. I created a cutting jig from Steve Good's pattern and instructions found here: http://www.stevedgood.com/3djig.pdf I cut the bird house pattern from Steve's blog found here: http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2017/12/compound-cut-bird-house-and-stand.html (I still need to cut out the birds for them) and the "Love You" from Steve's site here: http://www.stevedgood.com/3dloveyou.pdf The snowman pattern was created by @smitty0312 it says back in 2012. I thought I got it off the village here but now that I am looking for it to link to I am having trouble finding it! - If anybody can point us to it please do. Thanks Smitty for sharing it. (The snowman was my first "official" 3D compound cut.) Not perfect for sure, especially the words, but not too bad for a newbie. I will try more again but probably not until after the holidays. Too many other things I want/need to do. Thanks for looking and thanks again for all who shared information/help on cutting compound cuts. I appreciate all of you here who share so freely with beginners like myself.

Very nicely cut. Sometimes the wood has harder spots in places and the blade will follow by itself! Many woods have places here tin blades will just follow a grain pattern regardless of your efforts! I used to work metal fabrication and found out even steel bar stock is no always consistent!

I hope I didn't bring sadness to such a joyful place. I just needed to vent some of my grief. Thank you all for giving me that opportunity. You are truly my Village.

    Needed cheering up

Scrolling is what keeps me on the socially acceptable side of sanity. With my saw back in the shop, I am at a loss for stuff to do after I leave work that doesn't involve more labor. Plates and cups are made every day--sanity is sawdust on the floor.
