Well I turned 50 and my wife surprised me!
crupiea and 7 others reacted to Dad_Tech77 for a topic
Hello All Sorry if this is not the correct forum but I am too excited and wanted to share.....well she finally did something right after 23yrs of marriage!! And I am kidding as she gave me two beautiful daughters. She surprised me with a new Dewalt DW788 and LED Magnifying light for my birthday. I have been using my 20+yo Delta 16in and really had no issues and I had mentioned a year or so that this was my dream scrollsaw to have....raising two girls is expensive and I can't believe she was even listening to me I just finished setting it up and need to get used to it but any tips or tricks would be appreciated.....I am wondering why she bought me the LED Magnifying light? I guess she is telling me something HAHA Thank you all....hope you have been well! Ed8 points -

I would like to present Edward and Victoria. Edward is the new white Rino at the San Diego animal park and Victoria is his mother. Both are doing great. I have been lucky enough to be friends with a worker there and she has sent me photo's of both. Patterns were created by Gayle at Scrollers Cafe This is a very endanger species and we need to support all efforts to save them. Jim8 points -

G'day all, Have finished another lot of trinket boxes. We have the Spring Festival on Sunday so hopefully They will go. Some designs I have posted before. The Heart, Round bird and cat are new. Also used Western Red Cedar on the Love birds with the blue felt and "Mum" is pine with and Oregon (Douglas Fir) top it has a purple glitter felt. The red bands are Jarrah. All boxes are flocked and the lids have a proud, flocked piece under them, so they fit snugly into bases.8 points

Halloween Scroll Saw Challenge

Well, I got the old witch cut tonight...she's still naked though. Tomorrow I'll do like the Rolling Stones said over ten years ago..."Paint It Black"...lol. Steve Good did the backer white like the moon...I'll do the same. I won't do the orange surround as I want to leave it as a hanging piece. Just realized it looks like the hanging loop on the right is cut. It's a dark, small, knot. Not worried about it as I'm going to paint it black anyway...lol.6 points -
Its been a few Years
VernLeonard and 4 others reacted to herrwood for a topic
Its been a few years since I posted here, life got complicated, sold my house last year and made a long distance move so sold most of my tools. Anyhow missed scrolling so picked up a new saw. Considered a few options looked at the Wen as it had a low price , but had a Dewalt 788 in the past and knew that the wen was not going to work for me. So was looking for a good price on the dewalt when I found HD had the delta 20" on sale for $299. It was delivered yesterday made a few test cuts today some Halloween stuff, its going to take a little to get back up to making some decent cuts. Anyhow so far happy with the Delta does not seem much different then the dewalt . Been so long it took me awhile to figure out where this forum was on the net.5 points -
Latest Signs for Gifts
Birchbark and 4 others reacted to Dad_Tech77 for a topic
Here are a couple of signs I made recently for gifts. The Ford sign is an attempt at the rustic and grungy look using various paints and scuff marks.....I really like old and rusty signs so this is hanging in my home office. The Jeep sign is for a friend who recently purchased a Jeep and it is to hang their keys on Thank you Ed5 points -

looking for a pattern
heppnerguy and one other reacted to teachnlearn for a topic
Before the internet I scrolled from books and magazines. The easiest and simplest patterns I found were kids coloring books. A lot of them are themed. Especially for kids gifts you can scroll the pattern and give the coloring book. Daves pattern may already be perfect. Quick check got this. Another thing I read somewhere, sometime, the "dust extractors", like Fein and Festool are to run for long periods of time, where as, shop vacuums are made to run for much shorter periods. How true that is I do not know. I have had three shop vacuums in my 45+ plus years of wood working. They were not run for long periods but each one lasted many years... Just another thought to throw into the game. Kevin is correct an the Fein verses Festool. I bought the Fein, it was cheaper, after more study I realized to make the Fein equivalent to the Festool I would have to buy a HEPA filter. If you add the HEPA to the Fein, there are only a few dollars difference in price. I am thinking very seriously about adding the HEPA.2 points

By turning the motor you change the position of the link rods that connect to the front portion of the saw clamps end.. The motor shaft where it connects to the crankshaft is off center so that's what creates the push / pull movement of those link arms.. by turning the motor you change where that push/pull on those link arms.. so you're able to line the link arms up parallel to one another at the front end of the saw.. which makes a straighter up / down on the blade.. Not sure that make sense at all to anyone.. but I sure understand it myself, LOL With the short arms at the front of the saw.. you'll always have some forward / back movement or rocking motion.. but you can tune the saw to make that motion to be very little or a whole lot.. depending upon your cutting style and preferences..2 points

something that would work good for scroll saws is making the table/bench area they sit on a downdraft table.2 points
-
I think this info is in the manual but to add to what Ray and Jim said.. Your very first step should be to make sure the upper arm is parallel with the saw table.. I found it hard to measure with a tape measure so I used some wood blocks I cut.. actually some scraps, LOL.. I place the block under the arm and slide them down the length of the upper arm and adjust the rear knob until I have the arm parallel.. Then proceed as Ray mentioned.. Oh, a flat blade screw driver should work to turn the shaft on the motor.. at least my saw has a notch for this purpose.. I do it that way to get it close.. but I also have just turn the saw on with the speed at the lowest setting.... If I remember correctly it seems like the arm is right about 2-3/4 inch above the table so some blocks around that size to put under the arm is about what you'll need.. On my saw I had to remove all the bolts that hold the motor and spin it to the next set of slots.. then it's spun all the way to the max again before it got to the point it was as close to straight up / down motion as it could get.. I even took them out again and spun to the next yet set but that made it go back to very aggressive again.. so I moved it back.. The least amount of movement in the blade the easier it is to make nice crisp sharp turns etc.. but it will also slow down your cuts on the straight cuts too.. BTW, once that upper arm is parallel.. you should never need to mess with that knob at the back of the saw again.. However.. some saws will move that knob on their own over time.. If you do not have a mark on the knob ( some saws had a white line on the knob) you might want to reference the approximation of where that mark is located so if it does move you have an idea of where it should be.. My saw didn't have a mark on the knob.. I used a paint marker and made one.. also made a dot on the upper arm to line up the line I made.. Tape works too for marking if you don't have a paint marker..2 points
-
I do it that way, and also have a block behind the blade while the motor is running. Nudge the block forward and see how much it kicks back @OzarkSawdust The more aggressive the motion of the blade, the harder it is to make sharp turns, at least in my experience. Of course it does cut fast that way. Not really a tuning tip, but I set my saws (ex-21) speed at 3/4 or a little higher. In my experience I get better cuts, feed the work slowly and the multiple times the blade moves up and down seem to reduce the fuzzies on the back a lot.2 points

Here is my latest, Mother and stepfather of a friend. Done from GIMP, in 6mm BB. and finished in French Polish. I mentioned the photo converter yesterday as being suitable for some people, on some projects. Well below is the same photo done in the photo converter. I think I'll be sticking with GIMP for portraits. svg.svg2 points -

I made this wagon on the scrollsaw and made signs to hang on the front with Happy Harvest, Happy Easter, Merry Christmas, a red, white, and blue striped star, and a Welcome sign for the front of the wagon which is 30" Long and 16" wide. My wife painted all of the signs and today she put the Fall leaves, Pumpkins, and Scarecrow in the wagon. I'll post a better pic without all the clutter behind it later. God Bless! Working on a small vac for my scroll saw and drill press now. I was flipping coins between the Fein and the Festool. I've kind of settled on the Fein because of a local dealer. I have a 1-1/2 horse Delta Dust Collector system running, but it labors when I have the small 3/4" scrollsaw ports open. I usually open another 2" port somewhere is the system so it doesn't have to work so hard. But I can sit on the scroll saw all day, and that's again, a lot of work for a DC.Like Paul said, they are supposed to be used short term. The Fein will be dedicated to the scrollsaw and the drill press. I already have another old craftsman Vac for general use, but that thing sounds like an F-15 running in my small basement shop.1 point

CHIEFS #2

Finished up the second CHIEFS plaque. I enlarged the arrowhead an inch and redid the CHIEFS enlarging and moved the spacing slightly. This one went smooth and quickly! I knew the problems I ran into on the first, thanks for all the help guys, and I used Pegas #5. I think this one's good enough to sell...? Watcha think? Would you sell as is...or do a frame?1 point -

Sounds like it would have to be...Steve Good says " Let's talk about the Excalibur for a minute. This saw has gone through a manufacturing company change in the last year. They moved manufacturing from Taiwan to China. I think there have been startup problems with the new manufacturer. I only have limited first-hand knowledge of this issue. I have personally seen two Chinese manufactured EX21 saws that had to be returned with shipping damage. I do also have some second-hand knowledge of shipping damage from several emails I received from my readers. I am confident they will get these issues resolved quickly but I wanted to share this with you so you make sure you buy from someone with a good return policy just in case you need to return it. The Excalibur is a great saw but moving manufacturing is always a big challenge." Like I said, I'm not in the market.1 point

Jim, yes those patterns you are referencing are compound cuts. There are some older threads on here from a year or so ago about doing compound cutting. There was lots of good information and tips provided from several folks here in the Village that was quite good and very helpful. I will see if I can locate again and give link to it. One of the biggest tips I got from it was to not use a reverse tooth blade, but use a skip tooth blade.1 point
