    The Moon Fairy

I like to combine scrolling with quilling.....quilling is take paper strips, rolling them and then creating different shapes with them....i've created a series of 4 fairies...the moon fairy is #1.....the designs are my own creation....i used 1/2" baltic birch plywood for the frame, which is cut on my Excaliber EX 21....the frame is then painted and sanded.....the paper strips are 1/4" wide in a three color gradient.....the "veining" in the body of the fairy is something that i came up with...i use an FD Superior puzzle blade to cut the "veining" lines and then feed the 1/4" paper in.....the crystals are Swarovski and give a little "bling" to the fairy..... After i created the moon fairy and framed it, i felt it needed a little something on the frame to perk it up, so i designed the corner gussets.....they also include the "veining" of the wood and paper insert....i also build the poplar wood shadow box frames for the piece.....i hope you enjoy the piece....i had a blast designing and making it..... Another wedding gift

I made one of these a few weeks ago for a co-worker. Another co-worker saw it and asked that I make one for his daughter who will be getting married soon. The security guard at my job also requested one to give to his wife of 43 years. He asked for a backer on it like the one I made a few weeks ago. The one above was requested without a backer. The customer gets what they want!

  4. I searched our forum for all the dust collectors designs that I could find. The Hegner desperately needs a working dust collector. The blower is effective in removing the dust from the cutting line, but the end result is dust in the air, which we don't need. The dust collector system I built, uses common Schedule 40 1-1/4" pipe from Lowes. I purchased a five foot section of pipe, three elbows, two couplers, one tee, two Bushings with 3/4" thread for connection to the loc-line and one "reducer bushing" for connection to the vacuum hose. The reducer for the hose connection came from Home Depot. I am not sure if Lowes had it or not. It was labeled as a 1-1/4" PVC reducer bushing. This one part, is one that you will have to fit to your vacuum hose. You might need a different part or fitting to fit the vacuum hose you have. The loc-line was purchased from Modularhose.com. It consisted of two 3/4" sample kits and one part #61501 which is two additional hose segments. I was able to snap everything together without any tools. I did buy 3/4" nuts that you see in the photo, but they are not necessary. I fitted everything together without glue and fastened the assembly to my saw. Once I was satisfied, with the fit (I did recut a few sections for better fits) I removed the assembly from my saw and glued it together with PVC glue. I put it back on my saw to recheck the fit, then removed it again to paint. The paint is Kubota Bright Orange II. I bought the paint from Amazon to paint the stand a while back. When we moved, the stand got scratched up, so I sanded it and repainted. I had to buy two cans, so I had enough to paint the PVC pipe for the dust collector. I will say this paint is a 95% match in color. It would not do, if we were matching paint on a car, but it is good enough for matching the Hegner paint. The most important thing, is that the dust collector works very well. I removed the blower as it is not necessary now. So far, I have not sucked up anything that I did not want. It has been a positive because it gets rid of many of the small cutouts that used to fall on the floor. I hope this will help someone else thinking of adding dust collection.

This is from the same pattern book I posted from earlier. Can’t remember what site they were on. Regardless, the wife loves them so that what counts!

    Steve Good ornament

This is from Steve Good's newsletter. I had some 5' mirrors leftover from other projects and thought they would work here. I routed a recess in the back for the mirror and will secure it with some silicone. Probably add a piece of felt to the back to avoid scratches.

    So what is it?

So, I found this book of patterns on the internet a few years ago, and this was one of that patterns. The wording was written a foreign language that I don’t recognize. That being said, I don’t know what this is supposed to be. The top comes off so you could put stuff in it, but it just seems this thing should have a purpose. Any ideas? Am I just putting to much thought into it?

    Butterfly Garden

My sister asked for a sign for her granddaughter's butterfly garden. Well all the butterflies are gone and the flowers are returning to the ground but here's what she can put on her bedroom wall until the flowers start growing next year. This was more of a painting chore than expected but I think it came out OK.It still needs antenna's.

  13. I originally had a plastic tube storage rack with tubes that I bought from maybe sloans? Anyway it has worked great for me over the last 15 years.. When I got the Excalibur with the storage tube slots in the base the tubes I had was too big in diameter to fit the slots.. So I ordered these tubes and they fit snug but perfectly. kinda wish I had bought more of them as they are actually better quality tubes that what came with my storage system I bought years ago.. heavier plastic.. https://www.ebay.com/itm/10-Pack-16-x-150-mm-Clear-Plastic-Test-Tubes-with-Blue-Caps-6-Inch/381314545375?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649 Anyway as for organization.. I thought it was quite simple to keep track if I bundled them together.. Right side is Pegas MG.. Left side is FD-UR.. I put them in order smaller blades to the front and larger to the back.. since #3 and 5's are my more used blades #3 is the first slot then 5.. the back most slots are my less used blades ( spirals ).. After having these set up right on the saw.. I do not like the storage station thing I bought years ago.. but I do still use it since the Hawks do not have any storage slots.. Getting to like that Excalibur a whole lot these days now that I actually have it running as it should.. I have a cheap dymo label writer machine that I made stickers for the blade types and sizes to stick to the storage tubes.. but my old storage unit I just rolled up the labels that came with the blades and stuck them down into the tubes in a way that the size info was visible..

  14. Not so silly. Before I had even thought of scroll saws I used PVC to store my blades for my piercing saws. Here is where I learned about the plastic tubes.

    Blade Storage Question

I just got a new Pegas and it has holes in the lower part of the frame. I do use them all. I have the most used FD blades on one side and the Pegas blades on the other in clear plastic tubes so I can see when to reorder. The rest are also in tubes in a stand that I made myself... Works for me.

    Blade Storage Question

Because I used to do a lot of demos and teaching, I made a presentable blade holder rack. Made from Three layers of 1” Mahogany. I even decorated the back side. The tubes I get from Sloan’s Woodshop.
    1 point
  22. @octoolguy I have probably the same tube holder and I only use 3 rows. An empty row between.. Makes it easier to get the tubes in and out, I can pull a tube only part way out and see how the tube is labeled. If you have more than 30 different blades,,,, you have a blade fetish.....!

    The Moon Fairy

i use aileens tacky glue for the initial assembly and then a light coat of aileens clear gel glue thinned 50% with water and lightly brushed on from the rear....i quill the piece from the back since i want the 1/4” paper to to be flat with the front....hope this helps.. ps: love royers round top cafe! bob

    Vacuum Noise Levels

I have put the vac outside the shop and ran the hose to the equipment through the wall. Worked well for noise control. I have the same set-up for my dust collection system now.

    New Bit

I felt like I used that bit today. Made a setup for a speed bad. Got everything assembled, looks great, oh wait. upside down. Took it all apart, flipped it over and did it all again, turned out nice but took twice the time,. Had I had this drill bit, could have just drilled into my head when i started to save some time, lol

  48. Marg. I listen to my wife when she tells me things. The problem I have is when she asks me to do a chores, she thinks I didn't hear her and asks me again and again. I guess she just does not listen to me as I reply each time she asks the same thing of me, that I heard her the first time. She doesn't seem to get it as she continues to ask me again every six months Dick heppnerguy
