This was fun to make, still need to put a clear finish. The pattern I think was for it to hang on the wall, but I want to put it on a shelf so I created a base to fit it. I use cedar. What do you all think?

  2. Trying to get ready for Christmas before the weather shuts me down completely. Since 99% of my work is done on the patio, wind and cold temps have a negative effect on the idiot driving the scroll saw. For reference, all the hanger holes are 1/8". The reindeer you might have seen last year, but they easy to cut and people seem to like them.

  4. I saw this a while back on Pinterest and just had to make it for this Halloween. It needed something else so I built a thin box for it and put in some green led lights. I could have prob moved the led's around a bit to hide them and get a better glow, but I have more sawdust to make.

  5. Just finished this pattern that Brenda was able to make for me. It measures 12 x 4 1/2 and made out of Oak. Brenda, you can see the curves I was talking about on the corners. Thanks again for the pattern.

    Event Update

So, last year was my first year doing Autumn Topsail about an hour from home. 2 day event, I sold 180 puzzles, it was CRAZY! My best event ever. This year approached, I cut, cut, cut, cut... the weather forecast looked beautiful... then Nestor formed in the gulf and decided to come for a visit. Fortunately Saturday was dry until 4pm, but then overnight rain and wind made it not so good for Sunday so I chose not to set back up. (and it's a good thing since my Jeep broke down on the way to the venue Sunday as my wife headed there to enjoy the event as shoppers). Anyway, my new key/leash holders are continuing to do well and using a new display rack to show them. I sold 72 puzzles and took orders for 11 leash holders. I've gotten them cut, I just need to get the hooks on them and get them shipped out. Photo of some them done along with a custom one requested by a local shopper with their dogs name in the body... say hi to Rocky. 4 holiday events to go this year... 4 Saturdays in a row starting Nov 23.

  9. Tough decision,,,, only you can make. I have had an Excalibur and now a Seyco. I have the Pegas blade clamps,,,,, had them on my Seyco and have changed back to the original clamps.. More people swear by the Pegas clamps so I am very much out voted.... I think I would like the Pegas way of tilting the table better than the Seyco, but I have so far never cut where I need a tilted table. I plan on doing so, but not beyond what my Seyco can tilt. I do love the large table of the Seyco. I love it whole bunch. But the Seyco is not as pretty as the Pegas..... Oh, my it is a tough decision. I was lucky, the Pegas saw was not available when I purchased my Seyco.... I really don't know which I would have ended up with. Good luck....

  10. I haven’t used the Pegas Saw. I do have one of the first Seyco saws that came out so have been using it for a while, I have been very happy with my Seyco. My previous experience before my Seyco was a Dewalt and then a used Excalibur that I had bought from Seyco, the customer service I have had from Seyco with both of the saws was great. You can put the Pegas blade holders on the Seyco or other brands. I have kept the Excalibur along with my Seyco in part because it will give me more tilt should I need it. I confess though I have yet to “need” it for that. I do prefer being able to tilt the blade rather than the table like you have to do on the Dewalt. I have only seen good things on the Pegas Saw so I don’t think you can go wrong with either one of them. You just have to decide which one makes sense to you, for the cost you want to pay and go for it and then, don’t second guess yourself.

  12. I haven’t posted in a while, though I still try to scroll something every day. The kittens pattern was from Mike Williams and if I remember correctly the clown/hobo was an Alex Fox pattern that I have had around for some time. Both are cut from 1/4” Baltic Birch and mounted on pine 1x12’s cut to size. I painted the backer red on the hobo and stained the cat’s backer in True Black. The kittens were harder than they need to be because I made it considerably smaller than it was recommended. Hope you all like them. BTW, I stack cut both portraits and ended up with two of each one.

  13. Two days ago, I placed an order with QTE (Qtena).com for a gross of #3 mgt Pegas blades. I also wanted one dozen of the #1 blades but everytime I added the dozen to my order, in the cart I found that it had doubled my gross order to 2 gross. So, I added the single dozen by asking in the comment box. I explained that I was having trouble with the cart/order area. They hit my card for the $29.90 plus tax for the single gross but there was no extra charge for the single dozen. I figured they just missed my note. Anyway, yesterday, one day later, I received my order. The package contained the gross and the single dozen with a card attached. On the back of the card Richard noted that he was not charging me for the extra dozen blades to make up for my problem with ordering. That is a "stand up" company in my estimation. I will be buying all of my Pegas blades from QTE. It's the same company that I purchased my Pegas clamps from. Their service is top-notch. I realize that I live very close to them and that is probably why I got my order overnight but if they have what you order, in stock, it will be shipped out very fast. Give them a try. Best price around. But to keep their price down, they don't split gross orders. Richard explained to me that his best price from Grobet is in gross quantities but he is working on trying to get a better deal now that Bob Duncan has come on board with Grobet. I can't be happier with this company. Qtena.com.

I changed it up a bit with this state. Texas was done with 1/4" BB plywood. For Nebraska I used 1/2" Oak and clear lacquer finish. I like the hardwood version better. May have to do another Texas in Oak this time. NE is also a Russ Wood Designs pattern.

  17. I have an Excalibur, and Ray has been quite brilliant helping me sort problems, having said that and not seen or used either the Seyco or Pegas, I would opt for the Pegas. I have their blade clamps and if the saw is made half as well as they are You'd be on a winner.

  20. Okay.. Here is what would have decided me, had the Pegas been available when I purchased the Seyco.... The Pegas is a around $50 cheaper.....

  21. According to Bob Flexner, in his book "Understanding Wood Finishing", good old fashioned varnish is the most heat resistant of the finishes available to the average hobbiest. However, I'm not sure that "heat" in this context is intended to mean the type of heat one would expect to get from the bottom of a pan, right out of the oven or off of the stove top. Anyway, I would probably lean toward a renewable finish, like a Danish oil. Reason being, if it gets damaged, I think you can sand and re-apply it a little easier. This is another reason why I prefer Corian for trivets.

    Koala help needed.

Well I have cut my 'fussy' friends ruddy Koala, however the top layer of plywood seems to be a little 'yucky'. Not sure if it's the wood or perhaps I sanded it a tad too much. What would you suggest to make it look better ? I was thinking about a stain but I've heard that plywood doesn't take stains very well.

  25. First let me apologize for the poor pics, I will administer 30 lashes with a wet noodle later. I'm close to needing to order, my goto blade is the Pegas Modified Geometry #3 (PMG #3), in another thread some time ago someone mentioned the blades that Judy Gale Roberts (of intarsia fame) sells. And sells much cheaper than the PMG variety. So I ordered a dozen of the Gold. She does sell Platinum too, higher price naturally. not that it matters much to most of you, but the plastic zip lock package is thinner, not as sturdy IMO, as the package the PMG and FD blades come in. Initially I thought I received a manufactures defect, it looked like there were no teeth! But sure enough, sliding my thumb up and down found them. I was surprised since with readers I have no problem seeing the teeth on a PMG blade, (oer the FDUR either). see the pic So I got some scrap pieces and went to freehanding some cuts. Basswood because it is notorious for the fuzzies, and a scrap of walnut. I'll be staying with the PMG #3, but as they say, YMMV The JGR blades do cut straight just like the PMG blades do food for thought anyway

  29. I don't typically cut very large stuff either... usually 14-16" is about the largest I do and that's a rare occasion.. My issues with the table have not been the size of the table.. but more about the short distance from the blade to the front edge of the table.. I don't remember exact measurements off the top of my head right not but it's something like only 4 inch from the front edge of the table to the blade.. The Hawk has around 5.5" or 6" and the Dewalts have something like 8" Anyhow whatever the distance is.. Cutting large pieces at times when spinning the board around you may have 12" off the end of the table and into your gut.. I'm a skinny guy but I still have that issue.. not to mention you have 12" hanging off the table and only 4" on the table.. It took me a long time getting used to that..especially coming from running 10+ years on a DeWalt with so much more space.. As I said I don't do many larger stuff.. most my cutting on the EX is 10" or smaller.. anything large I typically just cut it on my Hawks.. Edit to add: The Seyco saw was advertised as having a large area in front of the blade.. I don't remember how much space it was.. but it was up there with the DeWalt or better if I remember correctly.. A fix could be to add a slip on table for the larger projects.. I don't have that "NEED" since I have two 26" Hawks and a 20" Hawk as well.. so I'm not fussing with making a table for larger projects..

    Cat Table Ornament

Cat Table Ornament Might like to make this for a cat lover. The pattern shows the cat's bottom a solid, but I cut it out for emphasis, but looking at it now, I think it would be better to leave it solid and cut in the leg lines about half way down.. Mine is cut from Padauk and mounted on a layered custom base of cherry and oak on the bottom. Free pattern on my Free Pattern Page: http://baggetta.com/pebooks/puzzle_patterns.htm

Nicely cut, and I LOVE the base for it! Might I suggest hitting the notch in the base with a rounded file, maybe contour it more to fit the base of the heart? Just a suggestion, I still love the idea! ...and may have to steal it shamelessly and give it a try myself.

  32. Thanks for all the replies. First off one reason I was looking at the Pegas saw was of the blade clamps and not having to change them out (hassle and cost)? As far as availability of parts I believe they are both somewhat the same as they come from the same areas of origin for the basic parts, but the Seyco saw does have some different parts that may be a problem down the road. I did buy a saw from Ray about 25 years ago or longer (it was one of the original Black Excalibur saws that were made in Canada with the none tilting heads ) and I know Rays customer service is a cut above but I am concerned some that if Seyco ever closes its doors ( Ray’s getting up there in age) will parts be available? I do like the idea of the larger table but I did want to try cutting some bowels on the scroll saw and I know you need the extra angle on the table to do that. I guess I am just concerned about how small the front of the table is on the Pegas as I have never used a saw with that small of a table before and it seems everyone likes the larger table. For those that have used saws with the smaller tables (Jet, Excalibur, King, )are the small front tables a problem?

  40. Kevin, I have a Delta planer and the blades have elongated holes that fit over the locating pins. I can slide the blades one direction or the other to offset them and avoid the nicks. I was thinking that as easy as it is to install or turn over the blades, why not use a half-used set of blades to rough plane wood that might have a piece of metal in it a couple of times through. If you have a bunch to plane that is. Then once you've "cleaned" the wood up, turn the blades over to the new/sharp side and do your finish planing. Just a thought.
    1 point
  41. You might try "staggering" your blades so that the nicks aren't all lined up. Doesn't take much to move the nicks to different "planes".

  42. This is #3 of a series of 12. The patterns are by the late Dirk Boelman, and I purchased the set from Scroller Online, but they no longer list these. I used 1/4" Walnut scraps. It is approximately 5" high. I make these wile I wait for the glue to dry on other projects. I used FD UR #1 blades and finished with one coat sanding sealer and two coats spray Polyurethane Clear Gloss. Comments welcome.

  50. My niece came for the weekend. Her older brother is in the hospital and it is pretty serious. Her parents needed some time at the hospital and she needed a break from everything. We cut and painted some of Steve Good's Halloween patterns. We also had some shop supervisors, the darker is Chase my niece's dog and the lighter is Samson my dog. The in progress pictures show my niece cutting, the unpainted pieces and one of our clamping process.
