I haven’t posted in a while, though I still try to scroll something every day. The kittens pattern was from Mike Williams and if I remember correctly the clown/hobo was an Alex Fox pattern that I have had around for some time. Both are cut from 1/4” Baltic Birch and mounted on pine 1x12’s cut to size. I painted the backer red on the hobo and stained the cat’s backer in True Black. The kittens were harder than they need to be because I made it considerably smaller than it was recommended. Hope you all like them. BTW, I stack cut both portraits and ended up with two of each one.13 points

Due to my wife's stained glass business getting bigger she needed more space. So I made a door that now goes from her shop into the garage. Because my wood shop was in the garage I had to find a new spot. We have a barn for three horses and storage. I took a 20' x 20' section and remodeled it for using as a new shop. The pictures show it as you enter and go clockwise around the room. My son did the wiring for me. The barn/shop now has 8 circuits, three for barn and 5 for shop. The AC has it's own, 10 4' LED lights own, jet air filtration has it's own. Then every other outlet drop is on a different circuit. This way I can have two big drawing machines on at the same time without popping a bleaker. I put the dust collection and the shop vac on the outside of the shop to help with the noise an to save space. I insulated an put in a new floor with OSB sheeting on walls. Makes for a nice work space. The wood storage is in the barn space. Now to find were everything is again LOL11 points

Just finished this yesterday for this millwork place that lets me go through there dumpster for scrap wood that they throw away. I picked up some nice Oak, Popular, mahogany, ash. This is a piece of it that i made the sign out of. Going to give it to them today. I want to thank Brenda again for doing this pattern for me. I wasn't sure if it could be done with all the letters in it but she knocked it out.9 points

Readying for Christmas
amazingkevin and 3 others reacted to Jim McDonald for a topic
Trying to get ready for Christmas before the weather shuts me down completely. Since 99% of my work is done on the patio, wind and cold temps have a negative effect on the idiot driving the scroll saw. For reference, all the hanger holes are 1/8". The reindeer you might have seen last year, but they easy to cut and people seem to like them.4 points -
Two days ago, I placed an order with QTE (Qtena).com for a gross of #3 mgt Pegas blades. I also wanted one dozen of the #1 blades but everytime I added the dozen to my order, in the cart I found that it had doubled my gross order to 2 gross. So, I added the single dozen by asking in the comment box. I explained that I was having trouble with the cart/order area. They hit my card for the $29.90 plus tax for the single gross but there was no extra charge for the single dozen. I figured they just missed my note. Anyway, yesterday, one day later, I received my order. The package contained the gross and the single dozen with a card attached. On the back of the card Richard noted that he was not charging me for the extra dozen blades to make up for my problem with ordering. That is a "stand up" company in my estimation. I will be buying all of my Pegas blades from QTE. It's the same company that I purchased my Pegas clamps from. Their service is top-notch. I realize that I live very close to them and that is probably why I got my order overnight but if they have what you order, in stock, it will be shipped out very fast. Give them a try. Best price around. But to keep their price down, they don't split gross orders. Richard explained to me that his best price from Grobet is in gross quantities but he is working on trying to get a better deal now that Bob Duncan has come on board with Grobet. I can't be happier with this company. Qtena.com.3 points

Well I have one better in my younger days, when down the shore on the boardwalk we would be under the boardwalk and put a dollar up through the space between the boards and when someone would bend down the pick it up we would pull in back under the boardwalk, RJ3 points

Definitely wear dust protection Tammi. There are several model respirators out there. Several on Amazon website. Steve Good has a couple reviews of some on his website. You will probably get several different ideas from readers. I have one of the models Steve Good recommended. Can't think of the model right now Sorry. It works great but for some reason it obstructs my view when scrolling. I just use it when I am sanding.. Right now I wear a 3M brand dust mask and have three box fans with good filters attached to them as I don't have a dust collector. They work pretty well and you can blow out the filters. Better than nothing. I also have a Wen dust collector hanging from the ceiling to clean the shop of very fine dust. I run it while I am working then set it for two hour run time when I leave the shop. grizz3 points -
Pegas 21" Scroll Saw or Seyco ST-21 Swing Tilt Scroll Saw/ Which one?
OCtoolguy and 2 others reacted to scrollingforsanity for a topic
I have the EX21 and the Seyco saw. I love the larger table on the Seyco. I put pegas blade clamps on it and love those as well. I do not like the tilting mechanism on the Seyco at all. It is not gear driven as with the EX or the Pegas. My Seyco is really stiff and difficult to tilt. It comes with a digital gauge to attach to the upper arm so you can return to previous settings. But you have to calibrate it and I have not taken time to do so as I don't tilt that much. The Seyco is a great saw, that being said if you go with pegas saw which I probably would now ( I am like Srappile the pegas was not available when I purchased the Seyco ) I would just purchase a sheet of Masonite and enlarge the table. Basically all you are doing is adding a few inches to the front and a couple to the side. If you need the dimensions of the Seyco table we can supply you with them. Just use double sided tape to attach. Works great. Good Luck on your decision. grizz.3 points -

Nothing like seeing your first non family project get picked up. This was also my first time cutting out letters.I've been tinkering since Christmas on a harbor freight scroll saw. My wife seen this the other day and asked for one. Some how in the process she wound up selling it, so now I have to make her another one. I do the cutting and she does the painting.3 points

Well I have cut my 'fussy' friends ruddy Koala, however the top layer of plywood seems to be a little 'yucky'. Not sure if it's the wood or perhaps I sanded it a tad too much. What would you suggest to make it look better ? I was thinking about a stain but I've heard that plywood doesn't take stains very well.2 points

Nice Jim. I like the reindeer one. I cut about 50 of them out last year but a little different style and gave them all away to all my kindergarten kids in school.2 points -
I had ordered my Pegas clamps from them too.. and they arrived really quick.. I was surprised since they are in CA that they came so quick.. I may have to give them a try with the blades..2 points

I saw that and it does not seem much of an explanation ..... I think hanging like it does is good with less stress on the saw front but I think the rack and pinion knob would be easyer to use. I know Steve Goodal from the Scrollsaw Workshop made a wood gear that he posted on his forum for the saw. not sure how well it works but here it is in his video.2 points

If it was for me, then I probably would do that, however the 'lady' wants wood. I may just cut it again with a better piece of ply, it wasn't a difficult pattern. xx2 points -

Pegas 21" Scroll Saw or Seyco ST-21 Swing Tilt Scroll Saw/ Which one?
OCtoolguy reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I had a DeWalt for several years. I sold it and bought an EX-21 a few years ago. I can't say I even noticed the shorter distance between the front of the table and the blade. I knew it was like that, of course, but it has not been a hinderance at all, to me. Admittedly, I am strictly a hobbiest user and like to make a variety of things, but I rarely am swinging large sheets of material around on the saw. Perhaps if I were, I would think differently. I really like the rack & pinion angle adjustment on the EX. It's so much easier to use than my DeWalt was. Each of us have characteristics that we prefer in a saw. Depending on what you do, how you work and what you've become accustomed to, your preferences will be different or take a different priority. Now let's talk about blades....1 point -

Looks like your wife did you a favor by expanding her business. I think you came out ahead on the deal. Nice shop, I hope it's heated the temperature is supposed to going down to thirties at the end of next week1 point -
I have cut large pieces on the Ex21 and have not found the small table overhang a problem. No matter what amount of overhang there is, the piece you are cutting will determine how far away from the blade you are. I can understand wanting a larger table, all around, if you are cutting large piece out of 3mm ply that is very delicate (like Charlie Deering does). I think in that case you'd want a larger table then any of the off the shelf saws.1 point

Yes butcher block oil is the same thing !1 point -
Just my opinion here but a blade is going to cut the same way whether you cutting fretwork or intarsia .. NOW.. don't confuse that with the types of material you cut.. A think most people consider that fretwork is usually what I call portrait work cut from thin plywood.. many people stack cut this so in my opinion it's still like cutting hardwood other than the plywood glues dull blades two fold, LOL Now.. she may have done the test years ago before many different styles of brands of blades where available.. and ( at that time ) her blades was the best for that... whole different ball game these days with different blades.. Most all blades back in the day were stamped and had that pesky bur on the one side which made them cut on an angle.. or a few degrees off to one side.. Not so much the case with these newer blades.. I have some small wooden wheels and axles left over from some toy trucks I made awhile back. I think they may work. If you Google clear finishes for trivets, you'll find many suggestions. A lot recommend oil and oil based mixes and I even saw one that used Clear VHT spray finish that withstands heat up to 900 degrees! (it is intended for disc break calipers. lol)1 point

hard woods work work well. Most finishes will not hold up to the heat but there are heat resistance paint like for BBQ's or maybe a stain. Steve Good has some trivets for free download on his online cat maybe be good for ideas. https://www.stevedgood.com/catalog/index.php1 point

I have also been using the #3 PMG and found the even with BB Ply I do not have fuzzies and it is easy to cut 'on the line' with them. I just ordered some #3 and #5 as I am planning some compound cuts and they should do that really well. I will find out pretty soon Dick heppnerguy1 point -

It's a great hobby glad you enjoy it. I started 22 years ago and still love to sit at my saw and scroll. probably where they will find me when I kick the bucket. Hope that is not for a while yet. You are making some very nice projects for just starting. Glad you are sharing pictures. grizz1 point -
I made one of these a few weeks ago for a co-worker. Another co-worker saw it and asked that I make one for his daughter who will be getting married soon. The security guard at my job also requested one to give to his wife of 43 years. He asked for a backer on it like the one I made a few weeks ago. The one above was requested without a backer. The customer gets what they want!1 point
