Another first!
Woodrush and 10 others reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
This is the first project that I decided what I wanted on it...designed the pattern from scratch and printed it out, cut and finished it. I used 1/2" Oak and finished with a couple of coats of Helmsman Spar Urethane. Now I need HELP!!! My wife put pictures on Facebook and by time we finished dinner 2 or 3 friends wanted her to get a price for me making signs! OMG...what do I do now?? I need help pricing these fast...please! From what they sent her already the signs will be similar to this one...a name or two, maybe a word and a name, etc. Randi, who lives in OR, wanted to see if I could also put a pine tree on hers. She said her mother, who is in her 90s, may want several to give as Christmas gifts! Or should I find out what each one wants first, then do a rough workup to make sure it will fly, then show them a workup and the price? I don't know as I didn't think it would come this quick! Thanks everyone!!11 points -

I have been wanting a more portable saw to take to shows and demonstrations. Through a series of events a 16" Excalibur with the Pegas clamps already installed came to my attention. For $275 I had to buy it. The saw was manufactured in Taiwan and with the exception of some table coating wear is in pristine condition. For those that know me know that I am a loyal proponent of Hawk having my G4 26 since 2005. The Hawk has paid for almost all of my tools in the workshop. Modified an old Delta SS350 stand with a piece of 3/4 ply and some left over Formica. The Ex is bolted to the plywood and I have three fixed studs on the stand to hold the plywood using Wing nuts for easy disassembly and transport. 1, Clamps I never liked the EX clamps, I am heavy handed and the probability of stripping the threads and or spreading the clamp arms on the stock Ex clamps was a real concern. The Pegas clamp upgrade is a significant improvement. Putting the blade in and clamping it is a breeze no fiddling. I do like the removable clamps that the Hawk uses. I usually have several pre-loaded when working on a project. 2. Table Vs blade tilt. This is the reason for me wanting an EX type of saw as a second saw. The fact that the table stays level while the arm / blade angle changes, makes inlays and any bevel cutting, scroll saw bowls come to mind, much more controllable. No fighting the tendency to push your wood downhill. 3. Front -back blade movement. The Hawk has the ability to adjust this to almost perfectly vertical, crucial for my fine fretwork. This EX has been adjusted to almost zero front back motion. I am not sure if that was from the factory or the prior owner. 4. Vibration, All saws have some in different speed areas. My Hawk has these massive long arms going up and down so there is some minimal vibration. This EX sitting on the same concrete floor has none worth mentioning. 5. Reliability, Time will tell, hard to beat the Hawk in that area. 6. Blade tension. Simple up front cam and you can tweak it at the back if needed. 7. Guards. I removed the bottom guard as it was in the way of the bottom blade clamp. 8. Dust collection. It does have the membrane and a 2 inch hose connection for a shop vac. That is not going to work for me way too noisy. I will probably set something up like what I have on my Hawk connected to the Festool vac. (much quieter) The only con I see is that the Hawk has a huge amount of room under the arm just behind the blade. I put my finger there when cutting 3d Compound cut work. The EX does not have that much room so for compound cuts I will have to change how I work. Overall impression. I am very pleased with what I have experienced so far. I am kicking into my Christmas ornament season so that will really show me the saws capability. I will also be cutting for two straight days at our clubs woodworking show Nov 9-10. This may be a bit premature but If I were in the market for a new saw, and based on Hawks current delivery delays I would probably buy the Pegas 21 inch saw. Why Pegas over the other similarly designed saws. The clamps, full 45 deg both left and right, rack and pinion adjustment with pinned main angles, and silly me I love the color. These are my opinions,2 points

I haven’t posted in a while, though I still try to scroll something every day. The kittens pattern was from Mike Williams and if I remember correctly the clown/hobo was an Alex Fox pattern that I have had around for some time. Both are cut from 1/4” Baltic Birch and mounted on pine 1x12’s cut to size. I painted the backer red on the hobo and stained the cat’s backer in True Black. The kittens were harder than they need to be because I made it considerably smaller than it was recommended. Hope you all like them. BTW, I stack cut both portraits and ended up with two of each one.2 points

Due to my wife's stained glass business getting bigger she needed more space. So I made a door that now goes from her shop into the garage. Because my wood shop was in the garage I had to find a new spot. We have a barn for three horses and storage. I took a 20' x 20' section and remodeled it for using as a new shop. The pictures show it as you enter and go clockwise around the room. My son did the wiring for me. The barn/shop now has 8 circuits, three for barn and 5 for shop. The AC has it's own, 10 4' LED lights own, jet air filtration has it's own. Then every other outlet drop is on a different circuit. This way I can have two big drawing machines on at the same time without popping a bleaker. I put the dust collection and the shop vac on the outside of the shop to help with the noise an to save space. I insulated an put in a new floor with OSB sheeting on walls. Makes for a nice work space. The wood storage is in the barn space. Now to find were everything is again LOL2 points

Kevin thanks for the lead as the last one would have been great if it did not sell so fast but I am only looking for the Seyco or Pegas as I know the Hegner is a great saw but just not for me. Thanks for checking2 points

Just finished this yesterday for this millwork place that lets me go through there dumpster for scrap wood that they throw away. I picked up some nice Oak, Popular, mahogany, ash. This is a piece of it that i made the sign out of. Going to give it to them today. I want to thank Brenda again for doing this pattern for me. I wasn't sure if it could be done with all the letters in it but she knocked it out.2 points

First Stack Cut!
Wilson142 and one other reacted to OzarkSawdust for a topic
WOO HOO!! I did a stack cut! OK...I know it's no big deal lol. But the first one is to me... I did a 4 stack with 1/8th in. B/BB plywood, and a very easy ornament pattern. I was more interested in the mechanics of doing a stack than how intricate the pattern was. Found the patterns in Sun Catcher Studios on line. I can practice some more with Christmas ornaments then get little more interesting patterns. I used a Pegas #5 blade that I got at Woodcraft when I was in KC yesterday. Really surprised me! I don't know if I am getting better, it was the 4 stacked, or the blade but it was very easy to cut! About 1 1/2 hrs. from cutting the plywood into 5" squares on the table saw to pealing off the pattern/blue tape...which is very fast for me. It surprised me that a #5 cut that easy and smooth. Also the Pegas blade did not wander at all!! It just followed the line wherever I pointed it, and was easy to make the few sharp turns also. But I'll tell you...as a newbie taking the trip around the outside of that 4" ornament seamed to take a long time... Hey Kevin...or anyone else that does hundreds of ornaments every year. Is there a fast easy way to put a nice looking finish on them?2 points -
I got a Pegas last March and really like it. Still have my Hegner.2 points

Excalibur 16 new for me review.
OCtoolguy reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
Thanks for the link to the review, Rolf. I had not seen that before. That is the most comprehensive review I've read. I can certainly see the benefits of the Pegas clamp over the DeWalt clamp. I never had any trouble with mine spreading , but I did strip out a few sets over the years I owned it. I think people often tend to apply too much torque to the DeWalt style thumb screws in order to get them to hold. As long as I roughed up the end of the blade, kept the clamp screws dressed and positioned the blade correctly in the clamp, I could get it to hold consistently by just snugging the screw. I actually have a little more trouble keeping the blade in the top clamp of my EX than I did the DeWalt. I may need to dress the clamp screws, but it has gotten me to wondering if an upgrade to the Pegas clamps would really benefit the saw. I don't notice much, if any vibration now, on my EX, so that isn't a big factor for me.1 point -
I am not talking about the throat, it is 16". When I scroll thick wood such as compound cuts for better control I like to put my finger on top of the wood directly behind the blade. I will try to take a couple of pictures to clarify what I mean. Bill, Regarding the Pegas clamps they are made from a better grade of aluminum and the blade slot in the front is not very deep so it would be pretty much impossible to spread the clamps by over tightening them. This article gives a good description; http://scrollsawer.com/2018/09/07/product-review-pegas-blade-chuck-heads/1 point

Excalibur 16 new for me review.
OCtoolguy reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
Glad you like the EX Rolf. Looks like it's in great shape. You got a killer deal! What is it specifically about the Pegas clamps that makes them significantly better than your initial impression of the DeWalt style clamps. I do remember that the pot metal clamp bodies on my DeWalt left something to be desired. The clamp bodies on my EX are machined from solid aluminum. I'm just wondering how much of an upgrade these really are from OEM EX clamps.1 point -
I would go for the Pegas. Seyco is an excellent saw with super support but some of the design changes did not make sense to me. Removing the rack and pinon adjustment, and the removable table surface. The big plus for me on the Pegas is the clamps. Just my opinion, don't beat me up.1 point

First let me apologize for the poor pics, I will administer 30 lashes with a wet noodle later. I'm close to needing to order, my goto blade is the Pegas Modified Geometry #3 (PMG #3), in another thread some time ago someone mentioned the blades that Judy Gale Roberts (of intarsia fame) sells. And sells much cheaper than the PMG variety. So I ordered a dozen of the Gold. She does sell Platinum too, higher price naturally. not that it matters much to most of you, but the plastic zip lock package is thinner, not as sturdy IMO, as the package the PMG and FD blades come in. Initially I thought I received a manufactures defect, it looked like there were no teeth! But sure enough, sliding my thumb up and down found them. I was surprised since with readers I have no problem seeing the teeth on a PMG blade, (oer the FDUR either). see the pic So I got some scrap pieces and went to freehanding some cuts. Basswood because it is notorious for the fuzzies, and a scrap of walnut. I'll be staying with the PMG #3, but as they say, YMMV The JGR blades do cut straight just like the PMG blades do food for thought anyway1 point -
I would think that would be the way we want it... after all the reverse teeth are for the very bottom edge to remove the fuzziies anyway.. the more teeth that are actually cutting the wood on the down stroke is what I would think would work best.. That could be another reason the DeWalt is such an aggressive cutting saw.. I've actually never really paid attention to how much of the reverse teeth are being used.. as long as there is a clean cut on the bottom I never really gave it much thought.1 point

I did get the pegas clamps from them for both my dewalt and seyco. I had the same difficulty that when I ordered the second clamp as with the blades I ordered the second one it showed as a second one of what I had ordered and charged accordingly. I do not remember what I did but I was able to order one with lever tension and one without. But when first few times of ordering even when I selected one and then the other I would show up as ordering 2 of the same one. Like I said I don't know how I manged to get it right but had both in 2 days.1 point -

Kevin, try mounting the blades a bit higher in the top clamp. Or, maybe switch to the Pegas clamps. It seems like the blades sit a bit higher using them. I seem to be getting about 6-8 of the reversed teeth on my EX. But, my table is much thinner than the Dewalt.1 point -

That's a hard one, especially if the lower ply is staring to show through.. Can you cut it down a little and put a frame around it? If not I'd try a light stain, like oak, but sand it nicely (and Carefully ) down to 360g by hand beforehand,. You did an excellent of cutting him, your mate should be pretty chuffed.1 point

You could tape a sheet of sandpaper to the board, then sand the back of the letters to the same radius as the crown. That will be a lot of work, but would get a tight joint. Tom1 point

My 2nd best event of the year was this past weekend. (Best event is coming up in October). Lazy Dazy in Cary, NC. 350 vendors with 60,000 attendees. This was my 3rd year and if it hadn't been for rain the first day cutting things short by a few hours, I'd have beaten last year. As it is I sold just 12 less puzzles than last year so I'm very happy. 103 puzzles are in new homes. My new offering of key/leash holders didn't do as well as I'd hoped, I took orders for 5. Maybe they'll be of more interest as the holiday's approach. Still about 9 events remaining this year with 4 of them being "holiday" events in late November into mid-December. Oh, and the one snapshot below of the 4 bins are my new method for hauling my duplicates... So much easier than in boxes and then having to organize/alphabetize. I have them in alphabetical order in the bins, just have to remove the covers. One bin is "oddball" items such as rare breeds of dogs or animals that don't get asked for very often and aren't worth displaying on the tables. I sold about 11 items out of that bin this weekend, so I was glad I had it with me.1 point

But what I will tell you the Clock that Kevin has just shown I will step that design up a few notches at some time. Just have to figure a few things out yet. I put that project on the back burner last year but will revisit it. I also will be making pool cue pens with watch parts embedded into the pen body and adding them to my revolving list of projects. Not sure how many remember this pen box I made a few years ago for a contest I entered on a pen turning site and it happen to take first place.1 point
