    Army Plaque

Made this to give to a co-worker. His son went into the Army earlier this year. This took me much longer than I thought it would. I tried to go nice and slow,, lots of straight lines and letters, everyone knows what straight lines and letters are supposed to look like so there isn't any room for error. The wife and a few others say that it is nice but I see some things that I don't like. I stacked cut two of them so I may make another one. Another co-worker saw a picture of it when I was only half way done and wanted to buy it,, so I'll show him the finished piece and see what he says. Not sure what to ask as far as price.

    Trivet

Finished up my first trivet this morning. Didn't have any 1/2" Oak wide enough...so I used 1" Oak. Finished with butcher block oil. I used #5 Pegas and just chugged on through. I think it'll be 1/2" from now on...lol It's a Steve Good pattern with all initials and plain also. I think I'll have to make several more, in 1/2" this time, for the kids before we go up there for Thanksgiving.

    Thanks Travis

@Travis I want to thank you for your work on these patterns. Easy to cut and went together flawlessly. I cut 12 each as original size then I increased the pattern to make these a wall hanger. I stacked an extra layer on the top of Santa to hide the hole for hanging. With all the small parts it was a couple of family fun paint days. The Santa was easy to assemble as all the parts lined up perfect with the outside cuts in the face. I placed a short line on the face from two points on the pattern which lined the tip on the nose. To keep with the snowman pattern and to speed assembly I saved some scrap parts from the cut outs to make these glue jigs. The back lines up with the notch in the snowmen's neck and the top lines up all the other parts. Add a little glue, set the part in the jig and the first is the same as the last. Again, Thanks for your work.

    Initial Necklace

Took a scrap piece of Cedar and made an initial necklace last night. Steve Good has this in all initials as well as a few more necklaces. I put polyurethane on it to dry overnight. Not really happy with the finish. Ideas? Poly, spray lacquer, leave bare, or ??? But it's a good way to use scrap...easy and quick too!

    Packing Tape

I do use clear packing tape over the pattern. The trick is to apply the tape tightly without air bubbles. Do not wrap. I then use a small block of wood to burnish the tape to remove any air bubbles. With the tape tightly applied, you won’t get any sawdust under the tape. A far as glare, I use a lighted magnifying light and an additional light to the side of the saw table. With this setup, I don’t get any glare.

    New Vacuum

Referencing my response in Rocky's Vacuum thread -- I wanted to get the scroll saw and the drill press off of the dust collector. Primarily, because the DC goes into labor with the little port openings on the drill press and scrollsaw. The drill press port is only 2"x3/4" and my scrollsaw ports are only 2"x1/4". I usually opened one of the other 2-1/2" ports just so the DC wasn't working so hard. Secondly - I wanted a vac that turned on when I pushed the foot pedal for the tool. When I used the DC, it was on all the time. I don't think I'm in danger of burning up the motor, but it costs in electricity. I looked a a lot of vacs before deciding on the Fein and I finally picked it because a local guy, who is starting up a tool shop was selling them. I was impressed by the low noise level, but their brag about 62db is more like 72db on my meter app. I'm usually wearing my earbuds with music playing anyway, so not a problem. My senior head banging moment came when I got it home and found the Fein 1-1/4" hose and all my fittings are for 2-1/2". After a call to the dealer and some shopping around, I found that there are no DC type connectors and fittings for the vac. I did read that a 2-1/2" hose connector would fit in the Fein and it almost did. But not good enough for real use without damaging the Fein. I remembered Home Depot had some tool adapters for 2-1/2" vacuum hoses. A trip there yesterday found the perfect fit. They have a stepped adapter which can be trimmed so the Fein hose fit one end and the other fits 2-1/2". I was able to tuck it into a corner, out of the way, but I don't have to move three other tools to empty it.

  14. I did a tissue box over the weekend. Steve Good has a couple of these square boxes on his site. I did this one first in Poplar...ran out (thought I had another piece) so I used Oak for the top. Some Minwax Shades in Pecan. I'm with some of you...tab joints are a pain, may not do them for a while. I'll try the other design soon. It has a box...then several different sides you can choose from. I'll do several boxes, then choose a couple different side panels. I designed a standard tissue box last night and cut out solid sides. If it works OK I'll try to design some fretwork to either cut on the sides or make glue on panels.

    New Vacuum

How is the noise level at the nozzles? I don't have a Fein but my vacuum is quite but I get a lot of noise at the nozzle. While ear buds take care of the issue, I am curious about everyone else's set up. Thanks.

Yes you can get glare. If you have moveable lights play around with their location. It should focus on the blade and points further back.

    Packing Tape

Only thing I use the clear tape for now days since I started using the shelf liner is taping around the edges to hold a stack together..which in my case is daily use but still.. I also use it for making my boxes to ship my order in.. I do use the Duck brand "easy peel? I think.. It is a thicker tape and peals off the roll easy.. some of those tapes if you don't leave a tail on it and it gets stuck back to the roll you play heck trying to get it peeled back again without tearing and breaking many little pieces.. and the easy peel or maybe it's called easy start? anyway. it's the easiest best tape I've found..

Does the mineral spirits damage and tear the paper pattern? I have been trying to remove the patterns without damaging them lately to be able to reapply them to the back side of my shop door and "spray paint" them onto the door... just to be able to see some past projects every time I'm out in the shop. Lately it seems like I'm more excited about saving the pattern and applying it to the door than I am about the project itself!

    Packing Tape

@flarud I just wipe Mineral Spirits on the pattern. wait a few seconds and lift the pattern off. Then I wipe the wood off with more MS to get any remaining residue. Try Mineral Spirits once instead of heat and goof off. See if it works better for you.

    Packing Tape

When I first got back into scrolling a few years ago I would use the spray glue on the pattern and attach it directly to the wood. I would use a heat gun and or goof off or oops to remove the pattern but there was always a sticky residue left behind that would have to be sanded off... that could be damaging to the cut out. So I started using the blue tape and no need to worry about the sticky residue but now it's time consuming to remove all of the tape.

I agree. But I do admit I do get some glare. I just finished a project make out of cherry. 1/2" thick, 12" wide by 20" long, using white shelf liner on the wood, then glued pattern to shelf liner. No glare, no burning, AND , no lifting of wood fiber. Plus, the shelf liner was one piece, very easy to remove and very little glue residue. I use white instead of clear because it is easier to see. I'm not a fan at all of painters tape, pain in the butt when trying to take it off delicate fret work, plus it seems to lift the fiber.

    Packing Tape

Must confess, this summer I stopped using blue tape as I found it a pain to remove from detailed fretwork. So now I just glue my pattern straight onto my wood and use White Spirit to remove. So much easier for me this way.

  26. Just a note about that spectraply wood yes it does come in sheets and you can custom order as well. They run sales many times during the year. It is nice stuff to work with. I had shown these baskets before but they do not fit in this category because a scroll saw was not used. I cut these up using a tablesaw all the way. But this sheet is called bummblebee. The difference between the two baskets is the order which the layers were glued. One is just the opposite the other.

  27. I know, some of you folks have seen these before and are probably tired of me posting them but for the folks who may not have seen them, these are 3 of my baskets that I am now making for folks. I enlarged the pattern and will be turning out some bigger ones soon.

  28. I recently bought a pile of reclaimed timber and in amongst it were several short lengths of macrocarpa tongue and groove. Luckily it proved to be an ideal thickness for inlaying onto some pine offcuts I had lying around so I made these small hinged boxes using the excellent tutorial by our very own Jim Finn. Rob

That is my complaint about my system. I have a Fein, but I the air sucking noise at the nozzles is much louder than the vac. I have to wear hearing protection. I would like to figure out how to quieten it some.

  35. I bought some Pegas #MGT blades from Denny (Fast delivery!!). I have been using FD-UR blades forever and a few Olsen blades once in a while. I really like how Pegas blades cut. I have always had a problem on the Hegner with breaking blades. Usually on top, at the Quick Clamp, but sometimes at the bottom clamp. And I know that if it breaks in or at the clamp, you are over tightening the clamp and kinking the blade (BTW - I learned that here at SSV). And yes I know that I am being too ham fisted and over tightening. With the Pegas blades, the only breakage is in the middle and that is VERY rare. And they seem to stay sharp longer too.

    ANGUS

ANGUS was a Black Lab who was born to hunt. He was owned by a very good friend of mine, but thought he belonged to the world...if you pet him once, you were there for a long time. Angus was an incredible bird dog who we swear could tell when Joey was getting the shotgun out, he sat right next to the tailgate of the truck until they left for the field. I am not a hunter, but to see him work a pheasant field was unbelievable. The base and the frame are made from recycled poplar, the hunter is cherry and the pheasant is 1/16 inch sapele, his name is Black Walnut, the darkest wood I had. We all miss ANGUS, but Joey is devastated, I made this for him to remember his best friend.

  47. Oh, I might as well... made the Five Dragon box to put old nuts and bolts in, the Dutch box is where I throw my used and broken scroll saw blades. Then I made two Hamsa boxes to put ear wax in which is what I use make it easier to get screws screwed in.

  48. Finally made my first basket. Found the process to be kinda tedious....dunno why, I can sit there and move blades from hole to hole, holes so tiny that it takes longer to move the blade than it does to shave off the millimeter of excess wood, and not blink an eye. But cutting repetitive patterns? Nearly drove me bonkers. ....okay, nearly drove me MORE bonkers. But I made a basket!!! So....if I make a box, and put the basket INSIDE the box...will I have made a basket-case? ::ducks and runs:: Steve Good pattern:
