    Nativity Cross

Just finished up Steve Good's Christmas Nativity Cross in 1/4" BB ply. This is the smaller version, it came out better than I thought...may have to do the larger one. Spray lacquer on the fretwork and mahogany Minwax gel stain on the backer.

    I'm Such A Dork LOL

Okay the other day I mentioned in one of the Pegas topics about my Excalibur is already making noises and vibrating again after I greased the bearings and all I had it running so smooth.. It turns out it still runs very smooth.. A while back I put a 2 x 4 under the back legs of the stand.. I totally forgot about this.. and it turns out the vibration and the bad knocking sounds was the stand was either knocked off or just over time vibrated enough to have the legs barely on that 2x4.. I took the 2x4 completely out and the saw runs just as I had it tuned to run after putting it back together.. Funny how that sound resonated through the machine and made it sound like it was coming from the back motor linkage area..

    Some new cuttings

These are mostly 3/4" cherry with a mix of equal parts mineral spirits, Natural danish oil and semi-gloss oil based poly. Simply wiped on, left for a day, lightly scuffed and reapplied 3 times. The Iguana is 6" x 6" 3/4" Leopardwood. Pattern by Charles Dearing. All cut with Pegus #2/0 spiral blades.

    Initial Necklace

Took a scrap piece of Cedar and made an initial necklace last night. Steve Good has this in all initials as well as a few more necklaces. I put polyurethane on it to dry overnight. Not really happy with the finish. Ideas? Poly, spray lacquer, leave bare, or ??? But it's a good way to use scrap...easy and quick too!

    My birthday present arrived

My son bought me a pegas scroll saw. It runs really smooth. Haven't gotten to work on it to much. I was wondering if I should get a mat to put on the table so I won't scratch it so much. Or would plexiglass glass be better.

  7. Ray, I've noticed that before. Tha first time after putting a new blade in. But just didn't pay it any attention. I've tried to pluck the blade to see if it has a high clear tone...but my music is playing too loud on the Bose to hear it...lol By the way...if there are some really good tunes on, and you're changing the blade to the next hole...don't start tapping your foot if you use a foot switch...….don't ask me how I know

    Thanks Travis

@Travis I want to thank you for your work on these patterns. Easy to cut and went together flawlessly. I cut 12 each as original size then I increased the pattern to make these a wall hanger. I stacked an extra layer on the top of Santa to hide the hole for hanging. With all the small parts it was a couple of family fun paint days. The Santa was easy to assemble as all the parts lined up perfect with the outside cuts in the face. I placed a short line on the face from two points on the pattern which lined the tip on the nose. To keep with the snowman pattern and to speed assembly I saved some scrap parts from the cut outs to make these glue jigs. The back lines up with the notch in the snowmen's neck and the top lines up all the other parts. Add a little glue, set the part in the jig and the first is the same as the last. Again, Thanks for your work.

  13. I started running a new blade for 30 sec or so back at the start when I had a porter cable, it happened on that one too. Some blades stretch and some blades don't, but it doesn't hurt anything to do it, so I do.

    I'm Such A Dork LOL

I wonder if it vibrated off, or maybe it is more likely that you nudged it a few times during the rebuild. The back legs on mine sits on a 2x4 and has not budged at all. If nothing else take the rubber feet off the legs and let them sit and bite into the wood. Good to find the issue with having to take it apart.

    My birthday present arrived

Congrats and happy birthday, beautiful machine. I am one of those Kevin ( @kmmcrafts) was talking about, I bought a roll of magnetic sheet material off amazon and my table (ex-21) is covered with it, Not only does it cover up those pesky holes, but it allows me to make a zero clearance hole for the blade, it is also very smooth and slippery

  16. Mine (EX21) does the same thing. I think you are on to something about stretching. Seems odd that after putting in a new blade an cutting for a short time the tension goes away. But after this happens once it doesn’t happen again. I know what Kevin is saying but if the clamps or arms wasn’t down first time you reclamped then it should happen again with the same blade that you clamp several times before it gets worn out. As a side think (lol) I worked on railroad for 41 years and I know how much steel grows when it gets hot. Makes sense a blade getting warm cutting will expand some.

    Initial Necklace

That cedar is like Aspen. It is going to suck up finish until finally there will be a coat that looks like a mirror. Couple of more coats should do it. I think a 50/50 cut of shellac to alcohol might have been a good sealer.

  18. This won't be anything new to you more experienced scrollers but for those newbies and oldies like me, this is newfound info. I had read about doing this somewhere here on SSV but had never really done it until today. I had installed a new Pegas #5 MG blade and tensioned it the same way I always do. But something was just not right after cutting for just a short bit. The blade was acting funny. So, I released the tension lever and the blade had a big arc in it as if it was too long. So, what I learned is, install the blade, tension it, run the saw for a minute or so and then retension it. I was amazed at just how much the blade had stretched. When I install a blade, I always pull down on the upper arm and then tighten the clamp screw. Then pull the tension lever to apply the actual tension. This is the first time That I have ever noticed the stretch in the blade. Amazing.

  19. I cut six Miniature Birdhouse Ornaments on the Pegas Scroll Saw. I used 1 1/2” square Ash. I used Pegas MGT #7 blades. I cut the first two using the same blade. It started to drag on the second one but cut without any problems. The Saw cut with very little vibration even with thick stock. So far very impressed with the Saw.

  21. I have noticed this from time to time. Can't say if it is a particular lot of blades because I dump the new ones in on what was left in the storage tube. So, in theory, I could have some 5 year old blades still in the tube and just haven't gotten to them yet.

  29. You can't keep it looking new if you use it. When my tablesaw was new maybe I had it two weeks my neighbor set a pop can on the table and I have a ring stain that's seven years old. I remind him every now and then about it. I just have not been able to return the favor yet. He hasn't bought any new equipment. Awesome looking saw I hope you enjoy it and make a ton of projects.

It will in most cases, if you don't get in a big hurry, let the MS soak through the paper. One down side to this method, well some have mentioned it as a down side, after removing the pattern and the residue from the wood, you then have to wait for the MS to dry before you can do anymore with the piece. That may take an hour or so depending on how soaked you got it.

  37. Kevin, when I built the stand for my EX, I incorporated a hinged table top so that I can put a block under it and raise/lower the saw to whatever angle suits me. Every once in a while, the block seems to self adjust and it gets a tad off kilter. When it happens, I get a droning sound out of the saw that must be similar to what you heard. After I straighten up my block, it goes away. I'm going to make the block permanent one of these days. It's always something.

  40. Please let him know my birthday is on the 19th... I know it might be pushing it to get here on time.. so I don't mind if it's a few days late.. Well Happy Birthday! Congrats on the awesome gift.. I suppose it's up to you on the table covering.. I'm kinda funny on taking care of my tools and wax the whole machine, stand and all when i wax the table.. keep them clean as possible etc.. IF I was going to cover the table... I probably would go with the thin magnetic sheets like seyco saws use and cut it to size.. I believe several folks have done that on their Excalibur saws.. not to protect the table but to cover those dust collector holes and seem to get small pieces that drop out of your cut and bind your board up.. watch it with those.. they can really mess you and a project up when that happens..
