  3. I have been reviewing new saws ( as some may remembered from my posts) and had decided on the Pegas scroll saw. I had contacted Denny Knappen (member here) from ArtCrafters and ordered the saw from him. I got a very good price from him and also the saw was at my door with in just a couple of business days. Talk about fast service. Can’t wait to get it out of the box and trying it. Unfortunately it will have to wait for the weekend, but either way its in my shop so that’s a plus. Dragon sword and Shield

Didn't know where to post this. I did this Sue Mey designed dragon for SSWWC magazine. I did one with just the Dragon using Baltic birch ply and Alcohol dyes. They then asked If I could do one with a shield. I made that one with natural wood except for the Shield and backer which is 1/2 BB ply stained with Minwax Ebony. When the photographed it they had a sword (not mine). When I got it back I decided to make a sword. It is a combination of turning , carving, shaping and some painting. I am reasonably pleased with the end result for a "down and dirty " project. The blade was some scrap plywood from a crate painted with gold leaf.

  10. Not sure what your prior saw was, but if you have never used an upper tier saw, the first moments on an EX or DW style saw are a little shocking/magical. I still remember my first moments on the EX, I just couldn't believe it. Then the first blade change, I really really couldn't believe it. I can still feel that magic all these years later. And I know it doesn't help the performance . . . . but that Pegas color scheme is breathtaking. And I've met Denny at Artcrafters, wonderful store, wonderful person. -------Randy

  11. When I first saw this pattern I knew I had to give it a try. I struggled with the joints and the finish but over all I like it. I struggle with understanding how to put a good finish on my project which takes away from what it could be like in the end. Maybe I need to take some lessons from Scrappile when I go see him again later this month. I can always learn something from him. We usually just sit and chat when I visit with him but this time I may pick his brain and try to come home with some much needed knowledge Dick heppnerguy

  12. I grew up and live in farm country and raised in the city. Worked a little on a farm when I was very young, and enjoyed it very much. My dad grew up and was raised on an orchard farm in Norway which I managed to visit many years ago. I feel the ones who were raised on a farm are much all around better people. Pattern of portrait attached is by Alex Fox done on ⅛” BB ply 11 x 14 placed within a 16 x 20 frame (stack cut 3).

I had to put it in a Unique category. first and second place where really amazing. Next year it will be game on. I have a design I want to do. I had no time to take pictures at the show too busy hawking the hobby and demonstrating the scroll saw. I had the new for me EX 16 there. I may be a convert.

Had a lot of insulation given to me last week.. so I'm putting it up.. once I run out.. that'll be where I build a temporary wall.. wife told me to buy a furnace for the shop for my birthday.. She never said how big of one to get.. sooo there shouldn't be any snow in west anymore in West Michigan once I get this thing going...

    HORSE

This is one of my cuts I start as a filler to work on while taking a break from other projects. Only problem is I just kept cutting once I started... I saw the pattern and thought of a young girl, the daughter of a friend of my daughter, that is a big horse fan. I mean she can tell you all about them... Her folks recently got her into a horse jumping class.. she is doing great. Was in her first competition recently. I hope to give this to her, I think she would like it but I want to get her parents okay first. I like it, if they say no, it will fit on my wall!! Actually I stack cut two, I will have one anyway. I am a horse fan also... This is a Charles Dearing pattern. I had to decided between three of his patterns. I pondered a while then selected this one. When I put it in my horse folder, I noticed I already had the other 2!! Does someone have just two many patterns????

  26. I started on Pegas 3" pin-ended blades, then to their 5" flat blades when I upgraded my saw about 6 or 7 months ago. I was running low on blades so I picked up a pack from Amazon of Flying Dutchman, 12-each 2/0, 1, 3, 5, and 7's. I haven't cut much with them yet (just came in the mail on Monday), but I've noticed that the FD blades tend to pull to the left a lot more than the Pegas blades, so I have to get used to angling my work a bit to get straight lines. The Pegas also seemed to make tighter corners, to me, for the same sized blades. Again, that's with about two hours' worth of cutting on the FD blades. The FD blades cut smooth, though, and leave ZERO feathers on the bottom of the project (I use MG blades from both manufacturers). I think its just a matter of me getting used to how a blade cuts, I really can't think of anything that I seriously dislike about either Pegas or FD.

  27. Ornaments don't have to be about Christmas. Take a look at last year's book. Lot's snowflakes, occupations, scenes etc. I did mine based on a teacher's theme as my daughter wanted for a gift for her staff. Couple of years ago I did a couple based on Harry Potter. Weird but it was a request from the secretary at the church. Good luck.

  28. Cambridge Dictionary definition cack-handed (kæk hændɪd ) used to describe someone who often drops or breaks things or does things badly: adjective If you describe someone as cack-handed, you mean that they handle things in an awkward or clumsy way. [British, informal, disapproval] ...the cack-handed way they handled the incident.

    Spray Booth

I guess first off my question is.. how large of a booth you looking to build? What kind of budget you looking to spend? Coming from an automotive standpoint I've seen a lot of creative paint booths just built out of plastic sheeting.. .. I've also seen and worked in a one million dollar manufactured booth.. with top of the line ventilation with massive filters to catch the pollutants from going into the air stack, baking oven, lighting.. almost the whole thing was a big light, LOL.. Are you just looking for a spot in your shop where there is no sawdust floating around? In the automotive world.. I've seen paint jobs done right out side that turned out better than the in the million dollar booth.. I've seen fibers from clothing fall into a paint job in that booth.. so as for keeping dust etc. out is tricky to do in a place that makes sawdust, LOL.. You could have the best booth in the world.. but if you walk in the booth after scroll sawing to do a little spraying.. well the dust on your clothing just contaminated the booth..

  34. Thank you for this, John... Good to know. At this point it is very rare that I would cut anything more than 1/2" hardwood - mostly birch. But I will keep the Olson blades in mind when I want to cut anything thicker. /Oscar

  35. I cut the Baby Elephant from Judy Peterson's new book called "Baby Animals". It is another one of her great puzzle books. One really great thing about the book is that she has a lot or good information for people new at cutting her puzzles. I cut the Baby Elephant puzzles using a #5 FD Polar blade from 3/4" cherry. The puzzle pieces were sanded lightly using a Mac Mop. It removes any fuzzies and rounds the edges slightly to make putting the puzzle together easier. The puzzle was finished with Danish Oil and then a finishing wax and buffed. I also make a puzzle tray to put it together in. The tray is made of a 1/2" BB with a cut out of the puzzle and a 1/4" BB backing. The tray was finished with shellac. I also made another version of the puzzle which is easier and made for younger children. I used the outline of the Baby Elelphant and then drew in easier pieces and keys., Judy Peterson covers doing this in her book.

    Craft show

Had a great day at the show yesterday, pulled in $377 which tops last year, sold a lot of $5 ornaments those small items really add up, now I have to go and buy more wood and replenish what I sold, looks like I will be putting in a lot of overtime, and still have a couple orders to fill. The traffic was very good and they did a good job on advertising, which the last show I did they didn't advertise, only put it in the school bulletin.

  44. I could not pass up the chance to buy a used Hawk G4 26 off of criegs list. It is about a 2006 and has seen lots of use but seems to cut well. I paid $250 for it. Came with extra blade clamps, a light, and a stand. I now have two Hegners and a Jet but this Hawk is the only one with speed control. All my others are single speed motors. I have not figured out how to get enough tension on the blade I want but tomorrow I will work on that.

  47. Pegas blades are good, no doubt, if I were you, I would get a few different to try. I, like you was FD only for a long time, but I tried the Pegas blades and there are a few that I really like and use often. I think in general, most like the Modified Geometry blades. I have tried a few of them and I find them too aggressive for what I like to do. I do like Pegas Reverse Skip #3 and the Double Skip #1. The other one I like is the #2/0 spiral. The rest of my blades are FD. I do think Pegas are worth trying and you may like some of or all of them.
