    2.5 weeks, 600+ holes

I finally finished the Renaissance Keepsake Box from the Creating Wooden Boxes book. I had actually done this box a few years ago when I still had my old Craftsman Scroll saw. That had taken me a month and I used Padauk wood. Bottom feeding with this fine pattern and using hex nuts to tighten the blades was a pain. Love my EX. I found some nice 1/4" board Bubinga at the Klingspor expo last month and wanted to use a wood that didn't darken like the Padauk. I really like the deep color and luster of the Bubinga. It was a lot easier top feeding with my EX-16 but it still took a while to cut over 600 holes and broke a whole lot of .02 blades. One of the included pictures is the darker Padauk box.

    Name Plaques

These plaque patterns were of Don in Brooklyn's design. The first was to my cardiologist. He really was excited to get that. It got shown around the clinic. The second two will go to each of my two daughters for Christmas. Thank you Donn.

    Craft show

I took my Christmas trees to the craft show and my pictures. I sold out of the trees the first half hour. I took 10 thinking if they don’t sell they make great gifts haha. I sold 15 pictures. I was surprised. I wasn’t going to take anything, my hubby sells pens so I go along to help him but he encouraged me to take my stuff. He says I’m better then I think. I made $400. .

  8. Been busy cutting stuff destined to be Christmas gifts (four for my daughter's teachers, various friends and family, etc). Haven't posted much because I didn't want any of them stumbling across one of my posts, remote as that possibility might be, but this weekend I finished up two little projects that were less Christmasy. The first is a stand for my daughter's iPad, her protective case had a stand built in but that snapped off at some point. I used the scroll saw to round off the corners since I got rid of the old works-half-the-time-and-couldnt-cut-a-straight-line-to-save-its-life bandsaw. Second is in 1/2" scrap ply I had laying around, my boss wanted the sign for his office, seems that its fitting for our little IT department. **looks innocent** No idea where he gets that idea from.... Font is "stencil", I think. Nothing fancy, just official and governmenty-looking.

    Glue sticks

I use glue sticks and love them. I got sick of dealing with going outside to put patterns on and the smell of spray glue bothers me. One thing us that they can dry out if they are old, even if you haven't used them. I keep mine in a plastic bag. I prefer to use the Elmer's purple ones. I typically put the glue on top of a layer of painter's tape, and go over the area a bunch so that there is a nice layer of glue. When doing a full sheet I usually glue half, get it stuck, then do the other half.

    Glue sticks

Hello, Other than using the adhesive labels, I would still use the 3M77 spray adhesive. The only trick needed is to keep your glue can inside at room temperature and you can take the pattern out-side to spray it. The glue will still remain tacky for a few minutes so you have time to take the sprayed pattern back indoors and attach it to the wood. Double sided tape would also work but, is probably even more expensive than the adhesive labels. God Bless! Spirithorse

  16. Beautiful work. Just watched your video and got a great idea from it. Wearing the cotton gloves while wiping the stain off - brilliant!! Are you willing to share/sell the pattern??

    Proud To Be (almost)

Customer wanted custom gifts for family. Instead of saying proud to be along the top I put what it is with there names on bottom. Also another customer just wanted the EMS logo. So I took it from a proud to be EMS sign. All of these are from Sue Mey.

Beautiful box. I notice on the first one, no scallops around the lid and bottom. Are the scallops your addition? both are beautiful, just curious. And the third box, is the pattern for that in the same book? I must confess, any of those boxes would have taken me 2.5 months to complete. Beautiful!!

Another 3M77 addict. I have tries many way and it is cheapest and best. I have use a Xyron Machine for intarsia. Great for that but would be expensive to do all your work with one.https://www.amazon.com/Xyron-Creative-Invitations-Handmade-624632/dp/B00X3EZ5VO/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=xyron&qid=1573993316&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExMEZDRTJNUlFBOUlGJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNjIwNTM2Mzg1QjhaWUoyN0hTSiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwOTc3Njg1MzVMSTlXU1BJVEs2OSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=.

    A finishing question

I'm not a pro when it comes to glue or finishing.. That said.. I've made sawdust glue as Jim says.. My experience with finishing after a glue & sawdust mix has been applied to a small drill hole.. ( I've been known to drill holes in the wrong side of the line a few times LOL ) is the spot is still there.. just filled in and not a hole anymore.. The glue hole always ends up a shade different.. but in many cases just looks like a spot in the wood grain or a small knot or something.. so I never really thought of it as a known mistake or blemish.. just a natural wood grain color change in that small spot.. You'll want to sand it good so you'll sand most of the glue out in the surrounding areas around the blemished spot.. if possible.. I've tried a few different glues with the basic same results.. a glue just isn't going to absorb the finish in the same manor as the natural wood will.. I have very limited experience in doing this.. less than a handful of times.. There may be some special glues or methods that those Pro's use.. I'm just talking about what I have experience which isn't much. But I look forward to reading this topic as I'd like to know more secret repair methods on this glue paste repairs, LOL

    Glue sticks

I purchased several glue sticks and none of them worked for me. I wanted to use them for real small patterns but it was no go. Do you have a garage that you could use spray adhesive in? I use it in my garage and even in the coldest weather the garage is warmer.

  47. Beautiful box, Dick, Some people seem to prefer a satin, butter-soft finish that can be obtained with a bees wax and turpentine or linseed oil which can be home made https://makezine.com/2010/09/02/how-to_beeswax_polish/ or purchased https://www.bing.com/search?q=bee's+wax+furniture+polish&FORM=QSRE1 and some people prefer a finish such as those shown from the earlier posts with spray finishes. That could include polyurethane, varathane, shellac, or varnish. Personally, I like a gloss shine with some of the aerosol products (polyurethane is my preference) but, some people say that appears more like plastic than solid wood so they prefer a satin finish of the same products. I guess I got long winded in saying that different people like a different finish. I just hope I have given some different choices for people to consider. Fantastic looking project you have made. God Bless! Spirithorse

  48. I could not pass up the chance to buy a used Hawk G4 26 off of criegs list. It is about a 2006 and has seen lots of use but seems to cut well. I paid $250 for it. Came with extra blade clamps, a light, and a stand. I now have two Hegners and a Jet but this Hawk is the only one with speed control. All my others are single speed motors. I have not figured out how to get enough tension on the blade I want but tomorrow I will work on that.

  49. While speed control is not an absolute requirement you sure will love it.

    Selling Online

The following is an excerpt written by @kmmcrafts from Info on Websites forum thread. I've been in on this online selling since 2010.. that said though.. up until just 3 years ago I only tinkered around with selling and never really took it to a business level.. so in the first several years I did maybe 10 orders a year.. when I started trying I did about 50ish orders the first year.. second year was around 170 ish.. last year I had over 300 orders.. and so far this year is doubling + some.. All that said though.. my first year was hardly anything until Mid - Late October before the sales started trickling in. and even last year I think I only had about 40 orders though the year until October hit.. then it was crazy busy.. If this years trend keeps up and the busy holiday season hits harder than last year I'm in trouble.. I turned a lot of work away starting from about mid November on out.. I sell on Artfire Etsy,Zibbet, and a stand alone web site with indiemade.. was just invited to sell on amazon handmade site.. amazon is sort of supposedly Juried.. I applied there when they first opened up.. but they took forever to accept me and when they did I was slammed with work during the holidays.. I lost my pass code to the site.. they kept sending me messages asking why I am not setting up shop I kept telling them but they never sent me another code until a couple days ago.. On Artfire I had a locked in rate of $5.95 a month.. but they done a lot of changes and now it's $20 plus a % of sales.. They have some awesome selling tools but it's like having your own site so you need to bring in your own traffic.. I still have an account but I am not selling there anymore.. due to a lot of issues with the site working correctly etc after they had some employees leave and they just didn't know how to run the site.. (poor management ) Etsy is a listing fee and a % of sale.. get a fair amount of traffic.. but to start over knowing what I know now.. I'd probably have not got so involved with working the shop there.. Lot's of other scroll sawers there and most don't charge a rate to make money.. and the way etsy is set up.. they will show your competitions items on your page etc.. so if I work my butt of to bring in shoppers.. they could leave by seeing a cheaper similar item from another shop.. That said I do get a fair amount of business.. but to do over I would put more focus on my own site.. Zibbet.. basic accounts are cheap.. but traffic is quite limited so you have to bring in your own.. much like a site of your own... I get enough sales to pay the yearly bill.. however I been thinking of closing up that shop just because I want to put my focus on my own indiemade web site as it is a better system.. Indiemade has different tiered plans.. depending upon how many items you have.. I have the $19.95 one.. I do well on indiemade for only being there a year.. First thing to do if you decide to sell online is to get a domain name and get business cards with that domain on it send a card or two in every package you send out.. Most people start on a venue as I did and then branch off to their own site.. Keeping up with SEO is a full time job+... LOL There is a lot to know about do's and don'ts of SEO and if you don't have a lot of time to invest.. your best off on etsy, artfire, or zibbet.. in my opinion.. Or.. spend big money advertising... to be found in searches.. Pictures of your products are very important for online selling.. if you have noise (clutter) in the background that distracts from your product or dark photos then it could mean the difference between a sale or a scroll on past.. I spent a lot of time with my camera and built a special photo booth light box to take my photos.. especially if your selling on a site like etsy where they show others items.. if someone lands on a page other than mine and they see my bright eye catching image they may say.. ooh that one looks awesome.. while the other item may be just as good of quality... my picture caught the attention.. Online selling can be a full time job if you want to make the effort and put in lots of hours.. I put in more than 40 hours a week between answering emails to tweaking SEO to working in the shop, packing orders, taking photos, working on web sites.. etc etc etc.. and I am only getting part time pay.. BUT.. it's nice to work my own hours.. and I am here at home for my family... I think too many people think they can just throw some pictures up on a site and the customers will just come rolling in.. to buy them.. and that is definitely not the case.. Also I think people think that lower prices will attract people.. It might to some extent.. but the more important thing is SEO and pictures.. because if nobody's finding your low price then nobody's going to buy it.. if pictures are bad many times you can't even give it away.. LOL.. That all said.. they say is takes a good 5 years for a business to get to a point of starting to make money.. I am three years in.. it's grown tremendously.. but if in 3-4 more years I'm not doing good I may throw in the towel and get a day job somewhere.. if it wasn't fun.. I'd have done that my first year.. Sorry, didn't mean to write a book, LOL Kevin
