I finally finished the Renaissance Keepsake Box from the Creating Wooden Boxes book. I had actually done this box a few years ago when I still had my old Craftsman Scroll saw. That had taken me a month and I used Padauk wood. Bottom feeding with this fine pattern and using hex nuts to tighten the blades was a pain. Love my EX. I found some nice 1/4" board Bubinga at the Klingspor expo last month and wanted to use a wood that didn't darken like the Padauk. I really like the deep color and luster of the Bubinga. It was a lot easier top feeding with my EX-16 but it still took a while to cut over 600 holes and broke a whole lot of .02 blades. One of the included pictures is the darker Padauk box.7 points

Lots of Christmas requests...
Dave Monk and 5 others reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
Been busy cutting stuff destined to be Christmas gifts (four for my daughter's teachers, various friends and family, etc). Haven't posted much because I didn't want any of them stumbling across one of my posts, remote as that possibility might be, but this weekend I finished up two little projects that were less Christmasy. The first is a stand for my daughter's iPad, her protective case had a stand built in but that snapped off at some point. I used the scroll saw to round off the corners since I got rid of the old works-half-the-time-and-couldnt-cut-a-straight-line-to-save-its-life bandsaw. Second is in 1/2" scrap ply I had laying around, my boss wanted the sign for his office, seems that its fitting for our little IT department. **looks innocent** No idea where he gets that idea from.... Font is "stencil", I think. Nothing fancy, just official and governmenty-looking.6 points -

I took my Christmas trees to the craft show and my pictures. I sold out of the trees the first half hour. I took 10 thinking if they don’t sell they make great gifts haha. I sold 15 pictures. I was surprised. I wasn’t going to take anything, my hubby sells pens so I go along to help him but he encouraged me to take my stuff. He says I’m better then I think. I made $400. .5 points -

2.5 weeks, 600+ holes
amazingkevin and 2 others reacted to munzieb for a topic
Jim, I get my hinges from Woodcraft. They are 1/8th thick at the hinge barrel. I can cut out the recess on the scroll saw if I assemble the box frame after setting the hinges but since I wanted the lower base flush and it has the 4 tongues, I wanted to make sure the 4 sides would sit flush to the base. I used the super fine saw that comes with my Ex-acto to set the sides of the hinge and cut down to the approx. depth I needed and then roughly trimmed out the recess with the scroll saw. Then I assembled the box frame flush to the base and CA/Pinnailed just the sides. ( not gluing to the base) Since the 4 sides of the top of the box were not flush, I got close on the belt sander. I have a 1/4" piece of tempered glass with sand paper that is taped down and lapped the top flush. (marking all edges with a white pencil until all lines disappeared) I have a fine rasp about the width of the hinge and got it down to the correct height. Here is where the 2 sided tape comes in handy. I position the hinge over the tape in the recess and use a my smallest hinge centering drill bit to just start/mark the the holes and then predrill all the screw holes with a finer drill bit. I wax all the screws and tap into holes. I remove the screw from the box frame and keep the tape in place. I lay out the position of the hinges on the top and apply a piece of 2 sided tape to the top of the hinges. I put the top down on the bench and position the box frame on my reference marks and press down on the frame. I use a small scraper to hold down the hinge barrel to the inside of the top and lift it off of the box frame and the hinges stay on the top. I use the same procedure to mark and drill the holes but since the top is only 1/4" thick and don't want them to pop through, I only drill 3/16 deep and tape mark the drill bit. I pre tap the holes with wax again until they stop. The screws that come with the hinge are 1/4". I use a vice grip and grind them down on the grinder to the right length. This all sounds a little tedious but once the technique is established, it all goes pretty quick. MSG me if you have any questions. I may need to eventually video this procedure.3 points -
This is my first video of me scroll sawing. This is cut out on my Hegner with a FDUR5 blade. The next one I will try a size 7 blade and zoom out a little bit also. I will be displaying these on my tablet at my craft shows I go to, to show the puzzles are cut out on scroll saw. https://youtu.be/xLwIWMuGhSo I am open to suggestions on how to make the videos better. Also I did not record the audio because I had my shop vac and Wren Air Cleaner going. Thanks Jim2 points

I do a google search, for say oil rig silhouette, the word silhouette is important or you get all kinds of drawings and pics have inkscape open, right click on the silhouette you want and select copy, in inkscape right click select paste and say yes to the prompt then use path menu, trace bitmap, set the stroke and fill to the color of you choice, resize and position1 point -

I work on my inventory thru out the year and I only participate in the Fall/Winter crafts fairs (about 5 of them). I make multiples of my biggest sellers, John Wayne, Word trees, Nativity related items (crosses, ornaments etc.) and some of the Elk Portraits. I try to have a wide variety of items. Things you think would sell well don't and things that you think would be slow sellers fly off the table. Last year I think I sold 1 butterfly cross and this year I sold 5 in the first show.1 point -
Congratulations on your new saw. Looking forward in getting one before Christmas, Secret Santa gift to myself.1 point

1. Pull 5-6 screen shots of various sections of the process, making sure that at least one of them shows assembling the puzzle, then print, insert into a simple frame, and post in various but prominent places around your booth. Another option may be to align them side to side, from start to finish, in your highest visibility yet out of the way area. 2. Edit the video to no more than 3 minutes, showing aspects of the cut, with the last 10-20 seconds of final assembly. Someone interested in seeing the process likely won't stand around for 24 minutes to see the end result, but they will stick around for a few minutes. Loop this video so that you can stay focused on visitors. 3. Whether you reshoot the video or edit this one, use sections without your hands in the way. Ensure that the video is focused on the puzzle cutting process. 4. Consider adding music to the video. Don't try speaking and describing the process, as this would be lost in the noise of the fair/event/show. Music will gain attention without needing to be clearly heard. These are the things that I would do to gain the most marketing mileage from your efforts.1 point

I agree, great job. I have to make a rack for my Grandson's Tae Kwon Do belts. I promised to make one, but I stall, because so many start it but drop out after a while. But than again maybe if I made it it would encourage him to keep at it. I've been to several of his classes when I visit and he is really good at it. Better than most in his class in his level, not just saying that as proud grandpa, he is.....1 point

Jeremy Fielding knows more about electric motors than anyone likely should. His YouTube channel is Jeremy Fielding. He explains things in pretty basic terms which is great. For a low-budget motor controller, search YouTube for treadmill motor controller. The below vid is pretty good. If you aren't up to doing all this work the Seyco vac system was some of my inspiration. The vac they use looks an AWFUL lot like a Metrovac. They are wicked pricey new, but can be gotten on ebay for about $50. I'm not sure about speed control with them, but one of these takes care of a vac motor and post cyclone filter. Regarding my motor, yes, I did get an awesome deal on it. The downside was the vac port was a little loose so it would shreak at high speeds unless something was touching it and the power wires were cut VERY short. ANY of their vac motors should work, as long as it is a universal type motor. I found an old metal Milwaukee shop vac at the dump and harvested the vac motor from that. Its not a 3 stage unit, only a single, but it will work. It just can't suck as hard as a 3 stage. You could also do something similar to Mathias Wandell did and build everything and it runs at a single speed. His units seem effective, somewhere in his channel are flow tests and such. Google and YouTube DIY dust collector, DIY dust collection, DIY mini dust collector. Spend a lot of time reading and learning. For me, everything of this sort is on an open timeline so I can take my time 'curb shopping' for parts. My Dad helps too! Keep an eye open at Thriftstores, garage sales, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, any place junk shows up. There is an extraordinary amount of good stuff to be had if you know what to look for. Hopefully this gets the ball rolling for you. Let me know if you or anyone else should need help. I will do what I can to assist.1 point -

Well.. if you mean George got the stand and you got the saw.. I have a great idea.. that would work out well for all of us.. Since you're in Mid Michigan.. I'm in Southern Michigan.. and George is in Northern Indiana.. You'all could just meet in the middle at my house and set up that saw for me..1 point
