    Custom Ornaments

I thought Travis had a cool program... so I got it and set to work! I’ll see these 5 grandkids this weekend in KC. Fun to customize and cut.

    Moto Puzzle

It was the most difficult and most interesting project. It all started with my friend’s request to make his motorcycle out of wood. When I did not find examples of the Internet, I decided to make a toy in the form of a puzzle. The material took a glued pine shield 37 mm thick. It turned out that such a blank does not fit into my scroll saw. After a little alteration of the mounts, everything worked out. At first I just wanted to cut out the fragments and round out the sharp edges a little. I spent one day, but I did not like the result, so I decided to give the puzzle more realistic shapes. I have little experience with woodcarving, so I was very afraid to spoil the model with one careless movement. All the work took about three weeks. Sometimes the work was done quickly, and on some days I just sat and looked at the individual parts and tried to imagine its future form. Of course I didn’t show my friend the whole process of work, but when he saw a photograph of the finished puzzle, he said only one phrase: “Shut up and take my money.”

    Layered Ornament

I made several of the Steve Good layered manger ornaments as presents. His pattern was for a 4" diameter but I found this too large and made some 3", 2-1/2" and 2" The small one was getting difficult for me to cut but made it through. I stack cut these 4 at a time from 1/8" Baltic Birch ply. The finish was Watco Danish Oil and then either shellac or lacquer.

    Nothing But Islands

Customer requested a Boba Fett picture. I had to Google to find out who it was. Found a pattern that would work on Etsey. I don't know if you can tell by my picture but it is nothing but islands.......a real pain in the butt to glue and mount.

  11. I used that piece to line up my pieces when I glued them in. I cut it apart and did a section at a time so I could get it out.

    Nothing But Islands

It looks great. Next time, save the black part like it is a big outline and just put the wood colored pieces back in. of course it all will line up and go right together. The only trick to this techniques is to make sure your drill holes are in corners of in the black parts so you cannot see them. Looks great!!

  25. @octoolguy, messing around in the basement yesterday and I came across the trivet I made out of Corian. Then later when in bed looking at old magazines I came across the article I read that was about cutting Corian. The magazine is the SSW "Holiday Ornaments Toy and Gifts Volume 2" Finding the two related item on the same day must be an omen or something, though I'd better post or or I might turn to dust or something...

  27. OK I have made a decision. and am going to close the poll early. Counting the folks who only expressed their vote in words rather than using the poll, the results here are: painted: 20 unpainted: 3 Adding in people who I asked in person, the results are: painted: 27 unpainted: 5 By the way, I did vote and I voted on the loosing side. I did listen to folks who suggested something other than 'all black' colour. In keeping with the dragon flies that I know well, I left the body black, but changed the wings to silver: This is what I will do for the 5 of these that I will give to others. But I, personally, still like the subtle look of all wood, so will make one unpainted and with a wood backing for myself:

  36. I have neuropathy and arthritis in my hand so when I am using the mouse on the computer I have difficulty controlling the pointer I have the pointer turned sown as slow as can be but still my mouse slides around my desk so easily that I still have trouble. I have found a solution that works for me. Rubber shelf liner. It slows the mouse and therefore slows the pointer giving me better control.

Very nice barb, Hope you bring none home from your show. Now, I must admit, you had me buggered with the "Unicorn Spit". My 1st thought was "She's having a lend" . and I must admit I looked up Unicorn Spit and it is not in the same shop as Rocking horse Sh*t.
