A bunch of projects coming together
frankorona and 5 others reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
There's three more on another workbench. Been cutting for a while now, probably mid-Octoberish, and was tired of having a stack of projects that needed finishing. So I cut the final Christmas gift yesterday, got it painted (first coat) last night, and stained these today. I ordered some LED's for the dragon project and was expecting them tomorrow, but they were delivered today (go, Amazon!!!). Several different stains used here, mostly Minwax Espresso, but I also picked up Minwax "Honey" and am REALLY liking the colors.6 points -
Thanks Scott. This something I am acutely aware off. I completely stopped cutting about 6 years ago as I was making wooden toys along with the normal scrolled items and the demand just got to much. I was down the shed all hours and I got sick of it. So threw in the towel. Only doing what I want now, no special orders, and if it sells good, if not so what6 points

I had a decent show on Saturday pulled in $270 which wasn't bad for a small show of 50 vendors sold mostly Ornaments and a few cell phone holders and some bigger items, not much Christmas items left Nativity items been good sellers for me especially lighted boxes. Need to make more Ornaments. Hopefully I can survive the last show which is bigger.5 points

Well, looks like it's going to be busy time in the ol' shed for a couple of weeks. I think I'll just ask the War Office to bring my tea down there each night. Did very well at the markets this morning. They ran from 9am - 1pm and I left about $600 better of then when I came. Now to re-stock for last one of the year, in a fortnight's time.5 points

I made a couple of these. Pattern posted a day ago or so. Have no idea what to with them. My wife no longer cooks and I eat out a lot. But it was something I could quickly make. I learned something. One never has enough tools. I cut them from 1/2" Oak. Cutting is easy but finishing, like sanding is a pain. I should be able to lock them together with a couple of 1" dowels and sand them to be perfectly alike. Sanding by hand? Not a chance. Now I need a spindle sander. Will it ever end?4 points

Two Part Trivet

At 81 I feel guilty about buying it. Don't know how long I can use it. My wife is not a spender and doesn't care what I buy. She is frugal but just says, "What ever makes you happy. " Then the guilt comes in. New year's eve we will complete 56 years of marriage. I've had it too good for too long.3 points -

With the amount of sap in Christmas trees, it is not something I would do.3 points -
You have to seal both ends with latex paint and let them dry before you cut them to desired thickness. If you don’t seal the ends, they will crack and split as they dry. If you live near a wood working store you can buy a product that is designed for that purpose. Turners use it for drying green wood. If you don’t seal the ends, the wood WILL crack! It might be less work if you buy them all ready prepared from Amazon.3 points

This Charles Dearing Gandalf pattern took a while. I cut it out of 1/2” African Rosewood, backed in cherry. The Rosewood is all natural color wise, but I did darken the cherry behind the wizard. I also didn’t like all of the space over his staff so I did an Eagle inlay to break it up a little. This will probably be my last major scrolling on my Dewalt 788 as I got my new Pegas in a couple of days ago.2 points

Not for beginners
Jronn65 and one other reacted to scrollerpete for a topic
I got this commission order for this Kleenex box from a very good friend, after she saw a different pattern that I had cut before (tulips) it is from Sue Mey. She wanted roses pattern, well over 320 holes later, here is the finished project. I even double the sides so I cut 2 at once. Will not make money on this, cost of pattern, wood and other material over $25 spent at least 4 hours cutting and I might get $40 for the Kleenex box. We never get rich in this hobby, we make families and friends very happy.2 points -

If it is a knock off of the excaliber then look under the chord where it plugs into the saw. The fuse on those is under there. Wonder who this guy is?? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvoTHxs3IrU2 points -

I am quite positive it would not be the brushes. That saw has between 20 and 25 hours of use since brand new out of the box. When I mentioned I was a certified TV technician way back , I meant way back in the 50 and 60s when it was all vacuum tubes .All the techs subscribed to schematic diagrams that came out on every month by mail on the various make and models .Now that it is all solid state it is usually just a case of replacing boards rather than hand wiring in the defective components that used to be mostly resistors , capacitors and diodes if the tubes still tested good on tube teters . Circuit tracing my saw without a schematic diagram and with just my volt/ohm meter would be difficult to do without knowing exactly what voltage should be at various locations and where it switched from AC input to DC on that DC motor . and no oscilloscope now to check waveforms like back then . Whenever I do get around to pulling the back end apart to take the circuit board out . . if I can not find an open fuse to replace then it is pretty well a case of ordering a new board because it would be too hard to find the defective part on it unless a case of visibly burnt . Then , getting a new board is no guarantee of a fix and of course electronic boards are not returnable . Pardon me if there are some typos in my message. I just got back from the hospital in the closest city (250 km round trip) getting my monthly injections in both eyes .It's no picnic but it sure beats the alternative . . .lol . . . I am typing with dark sunglasses on because the monitor is too bright for dilated eyes even though the freezing is almost all out by now. BTW . . . if anyone here can find the price of both the board and the motor for that saw could you please post it here .They will be the same for the three different models with the only difference being the size of the table and the length of the top and bottom arms. . . . .I have not found anything on line yet and someone from the states checking it out would save me the price of long distance calls from Canada .2 points -
@John B I am with you on this. I know a lot of people do these shows & I'm not knocking anyone that does, but for me there seems to be just too much stress. My wife does six shows a year and she pretty much has her head in the game when it comes to making, planning & setting up and goes merrily along her way. I'm doing a big show with her this coming weekend, just my second show, and after that shop time is going to be my time. To everyone of you that do these shows on a regular basis, I salute you.2 points

Those look nice. So, curious, do you stack cut them, at least more common names, so you have extras already when you get more orders for the same name or are you cutting one at a time?2 points

They look nice Les! A spindle sander is nice, I do have one but you can get by with an inexpensive set of spindle sanders from Harbor freight. Of course you need a drill press!2 points

You did very well. Congratulations! Hopefully it will continue for you.2 points

Hey Bill - welcome back! The expert of the world on Excalibur saws of that vintage is Ray Seymore. Don't bother with the SeyCo website. -call them and ask to talk with Ray. He will probably be able to tell you exactly what you need in a very short time. He doesn't sell them any more, but they do support them. Give Ray a call - he's good folks.2 points

I am not sure about rounds but the rule for air dying lumber is 1" per year. Pine normally dries and cracks quickly. I would cut them to thickness and as you cut them seal them as dgman suggested. Store on a something like a wire shelf so air will circulate all around them and out of direct sun light. GOOD LUCK.2 points -

And so have I seen many people change the circuit boards on DeWalts .I was one of them along with all the knocking noise adjustments and bad switch's and other issues to keep my Dewalt working before I sold it for 100 bucks. It would not surprise me one bit if the Excellsior has the very same circuit board as the DeWalt .2 points -

Thanks all for the encouragement...much appreciated!!! The reason I say that I'm "technically" a newb is because I got my saw 7 years ago. However, about a month after getting it all the problems in my life began. Lost my mom, mom-in-law, brother in-law and dad within a 5 year span. And then there were the 5 surgeries I had on my foot. So even though I have had the saw it was virtually not used over all that time. I have discovered just how much fun it is to scroll. There has been a few chunks of firewood along with some better stuff over the past 3 weeks. I've been watching a lot of videos which have helped tremendously. /Oscar2 points -

I honestly can't see the motor failing. The brushes may have worn too much, but they still run with the left over nubs; it just wrecks the commutator. Unless you have an A/C motor, then check the start/run cap or centrifugal switch. I would look to the control board myself, or that fuse if you can find it. My job is a telecom/electronics tech. In the few years that I have been doing that, I have seen a lot of equipment that was running die on a power cycle. Being a motor is essentially just a coil of wire it would be the least likely to fail.1 point -

Great work, Kevin, I think you see the general feeling here that you just have to set a price and tell her you will take no less or you can't cut any more for her. Good work! Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Spirithorse1 point -
I agree.. probably are the same one.. I've rebuilt a my DeWalt and my Excalibur.. I've had a lot of people over the years trying to tell me the EX type saws have sealed bearings.. The one I have doesn't.. exact same bearing as the DeWalt.. Sleeves are different but the bearings are the same thing.. same numbers on the bearings.. same manufacture.. Not sure how they last any longer than a DW does.. but many claim they do.. Maybe the older EX saws did have.. Mine is the newer China made one.. I've had a lot of problems with that saw.. I'll always be keeping my RBI Hawks around.. There are a lot of those old P-20's out there still running good.. You should have hung on to the one you had.. Back when those were the hot saw to have is back when I first started sawing.. Was saving money selling my crafts trying to get one of those P-20's.. The last one on the showroom floor of my local tool shop sold before I could get my hands on it.. They was sure one heck of a solid machine..1 point

Take the screws out of the back and the part with the circuit board and electronics can be pulled down and out. At, least it can if is it the same as an Excalibur. I took one out once, if I can figure it out......well....1 point
