  1. I haven't made much of a contribution to this forum in a while - but it doesn't mean I haven't been working - (although very slowly) .... these are part of our "Gift Boxes" for family and friends this Christmas. the sleigh patterns are Sheila Landry designs. Sleigh bodies are all Cherry. Sleigh runners are either Padauk, Bloodwood or Wenge. the reindeer pattern is from a pattern that has been on the internet for many years - unfortunately I don't know the designer. the gift box's and the tree's are from the Dollar Store. Had lots of fun making these - they aren't quite done yet - have a few more reindeer to make - and a bit of final finishing with steel wool and wax all - but was getting VERY strong indications from my wife that - (finished or not) - they were going to start disappearing soon - so thought it best to take pictures now ..... Wedding Rings

I completed this project yesterday on the new Pegas Scroll Saw. It is a gift for a couple celebrating their 50th. The designer is unknown. I used 1/2" Hard Maple. Cut with Pegas MGT #1 and #7 blades. The finish is two coats spray Shellac. Comments welcome.

  7. A couple of weeks ago there was a post regarding making Sue Mey's angels for charity. I had the pattern but never thought about reducing the size. That got me thinking. I reduced and cut one and the delicate wing broke so I revised the pattern to take the veins in the wing out. I cut the 2 patterns below and my wife actually preferred the solid wing. I did some at 3 inches and some at 3 1/2 with solid wings. Done in 1/8 Baltic birch and glitter spray paint. I am going to the annual volunteers luncheon at our local support centre (Hearth Place) and should be one for everyone there (I hope as I have done 40). I will also give out the one with the open wing and the recipient will get a special gift of a wood pen. Don Love the inspiration I get here in the Village.

  9. Thanks for the chuckle this morning JT, when I read lightning strike used synonymous with power company surge that made me chuckle.

  10. I can get 20 or 21 patterns on a 6' board, yes, always standard 1x12 poplar. If I'm in a crunch and need to produce a lot, I can cut all of them in 1 day. But generally I spread it out over 3 days... 1 day to cut the outlines. 1 day to do all of the internal and detail cuts. 1 day to cut them into puzzle pieces. Because I have a day job I spend only 1-2 hours a day cutting spread out throughout the day.

  11. I buy 12" wide boards, 6' length and I apply it to the entire board then spray glue the surface, then stick my patterns to it. Sample photo.

    Scroll Saw Inlay

I had several of you guys ask me about doing an inlay video. Our grandsons have been staying with us for the past week. My oldest one is twelve and is great on computer stuff so he helped me do this.

    EX 16 Problem?

Marg, do the blade chucks, clamps move up and down, eg closer together and wider apart, or another way, do you have to hold them closed when putting in a blade. If this is the case, in the top arm is a mechanism that moves the top blade chuck up and down, on my Ex21 this is joined in the middle for some amazing reason. Quite a while ago, the nut that joins these came loose and I had a knocking noise. The nut that uses the saw is always loose

    EX 16 Problem?

Well we had a look at the saw and it wasn't the air hose. But it was (excuse me for not knowing the technical term) the silver metal bit that connects to the arm, the blade goes in the end. Terry pushed it to see if it was loose and when he started the saw the knocking had stopped. Not sure if the problem is fixed permanently but it is for now. Thanks for trying to help. Marg

  28. With the power of lighting I will agree a surge protector isn't going to stop it. One guy does a sample calculation of how powerful lighting and figure is powering houses. With that kind of power, I doubt any little box has a chance. I'll leave the actual figure a mystery and let everyone scroll through the webpage. 30. Wow Scott...that's a lot of puzzles! How long does it take you to cut a board full of puzzles? Always 1x Poplar?
    1 point
  31. Correct. Blue painters tape is great for smaller pieces, but since I start with 6' long boards this peel & stick works great.

  44. Pine is just not worth the effort. Too much sap.

  45. I am not sure about rounds but the rule for air dying lumber is 1" per year. Pine normally dries and cracks quickly. I would cut them to thickness and as you cut them seal them as dgman suggested. Store on a something like a wire shelf so air will circulate all around them and out of direct sun light. GOOD LUCK.
    1 point
  46. You have to seal both ends with latex paint and let them dry before you cut them to desired thickness. If you don’t seal the ends, they will crack and split as they dry. If you live near a wood working store you can buy a product that is designed for that purpose. Turners use it for drying green wood. If you don’t seal the ends, the wood WILL crack! It might be less work if you buy them all ready prepared from Amazon.

  47. When I was in third grade I started helping my Uncle farm. This was about 1957. Had me on a 8N Ford tractor with two bottom plow. Uncle had a bigger tractor pulling a three bottom plow. Farmed 300 acres this away. Sun up till sometimes 10 at night. Loved every minute of it. Now around here farmers have 4,000 acres and are done before dinner lol. This project I did for our country fair 3 years ago.
