  1. Well, this was a learning experience. I was getting used to the new saw and using almost all spiral blades. I only used flat blades on the handful of larger cuts. I also messed around with the setup a bit as I went along. Worked on the front to back movement, had to reduce it a pinch. Got everything perfect by the end. Anyway, this is a Charles Dearing pattern of Tom Petty, cut in 1/4” BB, backed by a piece of Poplar. 306 cuts, I think.

    Finished ornaments

Finished these ornaments this week. The 1st one I actually started last year for my son and daughter-in-law. They had bought a house last November but were so busy fixing it up they didn’t get a tree so I put it on the backburner. I’m ok with it. Could have been a lot better. 1/4 inch Birch that I feel I should’ve stained first. I also just got the mini-drill bits a few weeks ago that helped finishing it but would’ve come in handy last year. The second is for my granddaughter. 1/2 inch oak that I really liked how it turned out. They’re Steve Good patterns.

  7. Back in the day, when I worked on GA aircraft, it was common to see a lot of B-18 aircraft. There was something special hearing those round engines cough on start and runup to power and then do their magneto checks. They eventually started to disappear because of an expensive spar mod. This aircraft had a long history with over 9,000 being built between 1937 and 1970. It was used by the military of 40 countries for training and utility work and there are still a few around with private owners and for freight. They could seat from 6 to 10 passengers. As usual, the design took longer that the actual cutting but it was a fun cut. Added the "prop sweep" on my wife's suggestion. It wasn't obvious in the picture but there were some minor reference marks on the fuselage to get the prop length. I used a compass to trace along the edge of the engine cowlings to get the proper ellipse angle for the prop sweep. Dim 17 x 12 on 1/8" BBPW 1/4" PW backer. Shellac and Lacquer finish. Some additional info. https://www.skytamer.com/Beechcraft_18GS.html

  9. Made my first - seven piece Nativity box some 6 months ago and entered it in the Northeast Arkansas Fair in September and it won the big Blue - and shortly afterwards received a order for 8 more . It's a Steve Good Pattern , remember when making this that the cuts need to be as precise as possible - if not will cause you a lot more sanding . It's still take some tweeting on the top lid to make it shut perfect , this project is made from 1/8" BB Plywood and the top and bottom pieces are 1/4" Walnut material and several light coats of high gloss spray lacquer with sanding in between coats . Any comments welcomed ....

    Christmas Candles

This a Steve Good pattern, search for "Happy Holidays" in his pattern catalog. Very simple to cut and I think a great pattern. 1/2" Oak, using Pegas #3 SPR blades. A gift for my neighbors. Sorry it is slanted a little, I have one leg shorter than the other..... Keeps me walking in circles.

  13. Here are the 2 ornaments I finished this year, both by Steve Good. The 1st one is for my son and daughter-in-law for last year. They bought a house last November but were in the middle of fixing it up and didn’t have a tree so I didn’t finish it. It’s 1/4” BB sealed with a couple coats of Danish Oil then 3 coats of semi-gloss poly. I’m OK with it but think It would’ve been better if I stained it first. The second one for their daughter is 1/2 inch oak, again sealed with Danish Oil then a few coats of semi-gloss poly. Luckily she has an easy name because the pattern is Baby’s First Christmas and I was easily able to cut and paste the A’s in the pattern for her name. My wife wanted me to paint it, I liked the oak grain but compromised with painting the bow and cap. I really like how that contrast turned out.

  15. Well these have been talked about here and I decided to add them to my show items and hope they sell well and make great gifts for many this season as my shows start this weekend. The cocktail napkin holders. I will give people choice of color of napkins at show. If these take off I hope to add more to the lineup next year. I still think this is a cool idea. Hope others do to.

    Lubrication

One of my personal failures is remembering to lubricate the arm bearings on my Hegner either every session or every other session. I simply forget and literally a week or more later lube them. Its amazing the difference it makes in the smoothness of operation. So I began thinking of a better lubricant than light machine oil. After much thinking on it I decided to get some high percentage moly grease - minimum of 60-70% moly as I have other uses for it as well. This sort of grease is actually rather expensive when you buy it, but the amount you use to lube anything is so small it will last years and years especially if only used on the scroll saw. I know that grease on a saw may seem a bad idea, but if you choose to use this stuff you will see that it isn't enough to cause dust build up issues. The grease I settled on is Honda M77 assembly lube. You should be able to find it at any bigger Honda motorcycle dealer. It is THE recommended grease for the final drive splines on Goldwings. That final drive takes a beating and is exceedingly expensive to replace so a $25 tube of grease is nothing substantial. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is an amazing compound. It is inert, and super slick. When the carrier oil burns off or wears away, the dried leftovers are still lubricating to temps far in excess of what our saws will likely ever generate. I put some on my saw several weeks ago and have not yet noticed the usual signs of lack of lubrication. When putting it on I cleared out the old lube/oil muck and smeared a couple tiny dots around the shoulder of the support bolt and spun it while sliding it in and out of the arm. I did this 2-3 times to be sure it was in and spread around. You will barely see it but it works super! I'm not sure the requirements of other saws, but the Hegner is recommended to be lubed daily. This grease will lessen that need significantly. Honda M77 is re-branded Dow-Corning M77. There are other greases too (such as Molykote G-N paste), just be sure that it is minimum 60% moly. The stuff at the local auto parts shop likely is not that high a percentage. Molykote M77 paste specs I am not telling you all to disregard manufacturer requirements and invalidate warranties and such. My Hegner is a 96 and my Craftsman is no longer in warranty. I do any maintenance on anything I can figure out how to maintain as thats just how I am. If you are forgetful or don't like to mess with maintenance often, this may be the lube for you.

  17. Two of the Christmas presents framed and ready to go (Superman and WonderWoman), as well as a first-attempt at intersecting wordart. Of course, me being me, I couldn't opt to start with something like "Cat" or "Dog"....lots of tiny details and thin lines, had to re-glue the hole in the "6" where the bridge broke. But, the wife likes it, so that's all that matters, yes? Friday was our 16th anniversary. I was hoping to get this done before Friday, since I had last week off (two and a half days off due to Thanksgiving, plus 5 days of vacation time, makes for a GREAT time off! Lotsa sawdust generated.) but I was busy finishing up the rest of the Christmas gift cuts, and spending time with the wife (poking holes in targets from a distance is always good!).

    Puzzle Zombie

Scott is turning me into a "Puzzle Zombie". I'm having a blast cutting these. Went to pick my cat up Mon. when we got back from KC. Showed the girl at the front desk the "Rescue" dog I cut...she went nuts and started showing it to all the girls. I cut a Scottie for her...and she loves it! She was going to put it up on a Scotty forum she's on. I may see orders from that. I also took up a Tabby cat She showed it to the DR. and she thought it was really cool. I told her if they sell one I'll donate $5 to the cat shelter they support. The Dr. liked the idea...so they are displaying the Tabby and have a pile of my business cards at the front desk by the register!! One of the other girls wanted a Jack Russell so I got it cut and wrapped before I packed up my saw...will deliver it in the morning! Love the shrink wrap idea Scott! The owner at The Rustic Barn wanted one to display also...so I wrapped the Rescue dog and put it up there! Not bad for a little word of mouth and just 4 or 5 days.

    Lubrication

OK, now I am curious too. The Hegner manual reads: "Before operation and afterevery ten hours of use, oil each main bearing supporting the upper and lower reciprocating arms. Use heavy machine oil in the oil ports (#34 on parts diagram) for Polymax. On Multimax 14, 18, and 22 use light machine oil on both ends of the bearings (#8 on parts diagram). If you cannot reach the inside ends of the bearings, drop oil near the edge of the arm above the bearing – it will run to the proper spot. Wipe off any excess oil." I have been doing in every couple of months too.

  24. This scroll saw challenge should be an easy one. Share a pic of your scroll sawn gifts this Holiday season! There's nothing more special than a handmade gift. It could be a gift for family, friends, coworkers, or stuff you sell at Holiday craft shows! While we love to see your projects, it's the stories behind the project that makes it special. So tell us a little bit about it. From your saw, to under the tree, I can't wait to see what you made this Holiday season.

    My First Sale!!!

Hi all... not to brag but... I sold two of my creations today!!! I'm feeling pretty proud considering that I'm technically a three week newb. I know that I didn't even make near enough to cover my time and material costs, but hey... it's worth the feeling I got from the fact that someone actually thinks it's good enough to pay me for it. These are the two pieces I sold... they are both Steve's patterns.

  26. One more project, which I made according to pattern of George William Hart - an American research professor and mathematician. I got his permission to make it and share the pattern. 60 pieces, I used 1/8 inch laminated mdf Pattern does not includes any instructions of assembling, so if you will try to make this project I hope my video will help you - I tried to show all stages of project
