  2. My version of the Santa truck by Steve Good. I didn't care for the reindeer on the side but didn't want to leave it blank. The wife printed out the words on her Cricut. I have a couple more in the works. One made from BB ply that the wife wants to paint and another made from old grey pallet wood. Man this Maple was hard to cut! I have cut Maple before but it was't this hard to cut. I tried several different kinds of blades. Maybe it is Hard Maple? Is Hard Maple actually harder to cut than Soft Maple?

    Typical Monday’s

My typical Monday morning chores this time of year. Little slower this week with only 60 ornaments and 7 clocks to package up. Rarely work in the shop on Monday and this is why, I’m packing orders. Hate weekends because I get backed up on mailing stuff out since the post office is closed. Thought I’d pop in and wish everyone else that’s selling a good December of many sales.

  7. Back in the day, when I worked on GA aircraft, it was common to see a lot of B-18 aircraft. There was something special hearing those round engines cough on start and runup to power and then do their magneto checks. They eventually started to disappear because of an expensive spar mod. This aircraft had a long history with over 9,000 being built between 1937 and 1970. It was used by the military of 40 countries for training and utility work and there are still a few around with private owners and for freight. They could seat from 6 to 10 passengers. As usual, the design took longer that the actual cutting but it was a fun cut. Added the "prop sweep" on my wife's suggestion. It wasn't obvious in the picture but there were some minor reference marks on the fuselage to get the prop length. I used a compass to trace along the edge of the engine cowlings to get the proper ellipse angle for the prop sweep. Dim 17 x 12 on 1/8" BBPW 1/4" PW backer. Shellac and Lacquer finish. 11. Here are the 2 ornaments I finished this year, both by Steve Good. The 1st one is for my son and daughter-in-law for last year. They bought a house last November but were in the middle of fixing it up and didn’t have a tree so I didn’t finish it. It’s 1/4” BB sealed with a couple coats of Danish Oil then 3 coats of semi-gloss poly. I’m OK with it but think It would’ve been better if I stained it first. The second one for their daughter is 1/2 inch oak, again sealed with Danish Oil then a few coats of semi-gloss poly. Luckily she has an easy name because the pattern is Baby’s First Christmas and I was easily able to cut and paste the A’s in the pattern for her name. My wife wanted me to paint it, I liked the oak grain but compromised with painting the bow and cap. I really like how that contrast turned out.

    Christmas Candles

This a Steve Good pattern, search for "Happy Holidays" in his pattern catalog. Very simple to cut and I think a great pattern. 1/2" Oak, using Pegas #3 SPR blades. A gift for my neighbors. Sorry it is slanted a little, I have one leg shorter than the other..... Keeps me walking in circles.

    Best of the Best sellers

I do two shows a year, one in October and a two day show in November. And I just started selling on Etsy. I sell all kinds of scroll saw work. I guess my best all time sellers are the compound cut mini bird houses, Christmas ornaments, the Sea life puzzle. The Angel Puzzle and the Nativity puzzle.

  16. Holiday Market 1 - Very Good Holiday Market 2 - Even better Holiday Market 3 - Yesterday and was mediocre... A decent start, but final 2 hours totally dead. Holiday Market 4 - Looks like it'll be a rain-out if the weather forecast holds true The good news about market #3 was that a local oceanfront motel owner who I know stopped by my booth and she hadn't seen my new specialized Carolina Beach hooks yet and she loved them and asked me to make 22 of them for the rooms. Now I have a project for January. LOL I'll do 6 of each all as wall mounted hooks, giving her 2 extras for the entrance/office/check-in area. I have to convert the dolphin and pelican since I hadn't done any of them yet.

  18. Those that sell your finished products and projects, what has been the best of the best projects?? I know many times through the years things change and they can change from show to show and I get that, but what the question is, over the long haul what has been your top of the line can not miss seller?? If you choose to show off a little please do so we always like to see photos and bragging is a good thing. We all probably go to shows with various projects which is always a good thing to try to help in sales. I get that. I also get some people here specialize in one particular area such as puzzles. That is cool too and if you want to show them go for it. It would be nice to include where and what type shows you do. Any other facts or tidbits you want to brag about go for it. Such as what price range have you found to work best. What woods or materials you use work best and help in the selling. What type shows seem to work best for you and your area. Did it take awhile for that project to take off and did you have to tweak it over the years and are you still tweaking it?? I post this here to maybe in some small way help those that are just starting out and wanting some examples and helpful hints. I will start it off since I am posting the thread. I make a large variety of projects and have made over 900 different ones. I have narrowed my inventory down to ones that do well and are easier for me to carry to shows these days as I get older and not as nimble any more. Clocks of all kinds have been a great line to sell and will always continue to be. Thought that is a broad field I will bypass that. But surprisingly enough I would say I added a line of baskets that are great for table center pieces and other things that from the very first show till even today these are good sellers and have to say my best sellers of all time. I say that because of the numbers which I have no idea but do know it is many. I tried thinking when I introduced them but have a hard time pinpointing it but will say early 1990's. Seen the pattern in Wood magazine and decided I want to try these. In the magazine there is one size and two different versions, one wall mount which was half a basket and the large version. I made both but found the wall version a bust and stuck with the center piece. I then after a couple years scaled it down and made my own version of a smaller size and those are the ones that have taken off and even today still outsell the large ones. The large version uses 125 pieces as the small ones use 85. Have no reasoning as to why one sells more than an other. I sell them $50 small and $65 large and have kept this price through out with raising $5 half way through the years I have carried them. Could I get more probably but have found this price range to be the best and it works for me. I do these in batches and have a system to make and works well. I make them in all varieties of domestic woods and a few exotic woods. I have started introducing spectraply woods and for those I make only small but have to charge $65 for because the wood is very expensive. I hope to add more colors this year. But I have included a photo of them as well as photo of the baskets I am talking about. They are fun to make because I know they sell. Sold 3 at a show this Sat. Have order on another. So what say you and lets brag a little. The best of the best.

  19. One more project, which I made according to pattern of George William Hart - an American research professor and mathematician. I got his permission to make it and share the pattern. 60 pieces, I used 1/8 inch laminated mdf Pattern does not includes any instructions of assembling, so if you will try to make this project I hope my video will help you - I tried to show all stages of project

  21. Two of the Christmas presents framed and ready to go (Superman and WonderWoman), as well as a first-attempt at intersecting wordart. Of course, me being me, I couldn't opt to start with something like "Cat" or "Dog"....lots of tiny details and thin lines, had to re-glue the hole in the "6" where the bridge broke. But, the wife likes it, so that's all that matters, yes? Friday was our 16th anniversary. I was hoping to get this done before Friday, since I had last week off (two and a half days off due to Thanksgiving, plus 5 days of vacation time, makes for a GREAT time off! Lotsa sawdust generated.) but I was busy finishing up the rest of the Christmas gift cuts, and spending time with the wife (poking holes in targets from a distance is always good!).

  22. .....I come across another piece by scrollsaw goddess Fiona Kingdon on her Facebook page. All done in thick wood, layered, no pattern, she just starts cutting and waits to see what will come about with her single speed Hegner. This one is just stunning. And humbling.

  26. No this is not my idea. This topic came up a few times during the summer . I believe it was this thread that started things but I can not remember. https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/32348-napkin-holder/?tab=comments#comment-361434 These were popular on some Russian sites and brought over here. I have been working with a couple people to get me some of the designs. Don in Brooklin, and Ivan Nikolaev, members here. If you do a search here you will see these threads about this type napkin holders. Others have created designs and joined in also. I have other ideas if these do take off and will work on them this winter. I have shown the back of these 2 to show you the simple way the napkins mount. These are 5 X 5 cocktail napkins folded in a triangle and slid in the wheel. These are patterns basically taken from some laser cut patterns found on etsy.

  27. Well these have been talked about here and I decided to add them to my show items and hope they sell well and make great gifts for many this season as my shows start this weekend. The cocktail napkin holders. I will give people choice of color of napkins at show. If these take off I hope to add more to the lineup next year. I still think this is a cool idea. Hope others do to.

    Hegner speed issue

Lately I have been noticing my Hegner 22VS speed slowing and acting erratically at times. Whenever it would act up, just the tiniest adjustment to the speed control or releasing the foot switch and restarting and the problem would clear up for a while. I have had the foot switch apart and noted no carbon fouling or anything to indicate a switch failure, I blew it out and reassembled. The power switch functions as it should so not there. The next most likely was the control board. $200+ for that!! Yikes!! Amongst all the components on the control board is the potentiometer used for adjusting the speed control. The pot is a wear item. Inside of it is either a wound wire + a moving contact or a film + a moving contact. The resistance between either of the outside terminals and the center terminal should adjust smoothly from ~ 0 ohms to 100K ohms that this pot is rated for. Mine was jumping all over the place when adjusting it and didn't really hold steady either. Pot is bad. Here is the part list I came up with to replace the pot and three associated resistors I figure I will likely destroy during unsoldering. Shipped from Digikey to the door for under $15. 1 ‎1993-1229-ND‎ ‎PC16SH-07CP04-104A2020-TA‎ POT 100K OHM LINEAR Shipped By Digi-Key Electronics 2 Immediate 2.75000 $5.50 2 ‎S39KCACT-ND‎ ‎RNMF14FTC39K0‎ RES 39K OHM 1/4W 1% AXIAL Shipped By Digi-Key Electronics 2 Immediate 0.10000 $0.20 3 ‎294KXBK-ND‎ ‎MFR-25FBF52-294K‎ RES 294K OHM 1/4W 1% AXIAL Shipped By Digi-Key Electronics 2 Immediate 0.10000 $0.20 4 ‎280KXBK-ND‎ ‎MFR-25FBF52-280K‎ RES 280K OHM 1/4W 1% AXIAL Shipped By Digi-Key Electronics 2 Immediate 0.10000 $0.20 My saw is a 1996 and I got it at a pawn shop. I have no idea of its life prior to me getting it other than it looked like it was stored in a shed and had some water spilled/dripped on the table. Other owners of this vintage may be seeing this or a similar problem. If you can solder and run a voltmeter, wire cutter, and dremel you can do this repair. If soldering is out of your ability but you know someone, beg. Its way cheaper than a new board. Hope this can be of help to someone some day.

  34. Makes quite a difference, doesn't it? I got my EX-21 from Seyco and it was already set up for a less aggressive cutting motion. I fiddled with it once when I was doing some compound cutting in hardwood and forgot to change it back. I didn't do much scrolling for a period of time. When I got back to it, I couldn't figure out why I was having so much trouble controlling the cut, in some thin stock. I thought I had lost my touch, then it occurred to me that I had adjusted it for max aggressiveness and I set it back and all is well.

  36. Thanks for the tip on adjusting the front/back motion. I didn’t realize that was the issue, and probably wouldn’t have known if Rolf hadn’t mentioned it. I dialed it back a pinch and now I just feel like everything is perfect. My Dewalt is now temporarily serving as an expensive coat rack for my shop apron!

  39. Amazing work. People who can "see" the art without a pattern amaze me, one (now ex) son in law drew cowboy cartoons, when I asked him how he did it, he said wasn't really an artist, he just traced what he saw in his mind.

    Wedding Rings

I completed this project yesterday on the new Pegas Scroll Saw. It is a gift for a couple celebrating their 50th. The designer is unknown. I used 1/2" Hard Maple. Cut with Pegas MGT #1 and #7 blades. The finish is two coats spray Shellac. Comments welcome.

    Finished ornaments

Finished these ornaments this week. The 1st one I actually started last year for my son and daughter-in-law. They had bought a house last November but were so busy fixing it up they didn’t get a tree so I put it on the backburner. I’m ok with it. Could have been a lot better. 1/4 inch Birch that I feel I should’ve stained first. I also just got the mini-drill bits a few weeks ago that helped finishing it but would’ve come in handy last year. The second is for my granddaughter. 1/2 inch oak that I really liked how it turned out. They’re Steve Good patterns.

  43. This is only my second holiday season here in Texas so I don't have a good feel yet. Three years prior I did the Farmers Market in Bloomington, IL. Sports items were a big thing there. Not so much for me here. Inlayed boxes and puzzles have sold in both places well. I will say that when I started renting two spaces and widened my selection my sales almost doubled. The cost for two 6 x 10 booths at this show is $300 for Saturday and Sunday. A lot of money to spend up front but it was well worth it.

    Lubrication

I wish that the Pegas, Dewalt, Excalibur’s etc. all had a grease fitting on them. I took my DW788 apart last year and greased it with synthetic grease and the difference made was nothing short of incredible. It was never that smooth and quiet even when it was brand new. If I had known how much it would have improved it, I would’ve done it when it was brand new. Why manufacturers don’t use synthetic lube is beyond me.

  48. The last couple of weeks have been crazy. With being in KC over Turkey Day and getting ready to head south I don't remember if I posted these. Travis did a super program and I used it to modify and cut a bunch for the grandkids. I actually did 3 more this week and sent them to the grands in FL. Will probably do more when I get to the border.
